MAKING PEACE is an excellent presentation of a complex and difficult subject. Dr. Hawks manages to dig deep into the personal and societal issues surrounding body image and self esteem through various examples, explanations, scriptures and illustrations.

MAKING PEACE is set within an anything but 'typical' university health class. The format is easy to read and logically laid out to help the reader progress thoroughly through each topic. Whether the reader is looking for spiritual support or personal growth, this book is a real treasure!

University professors beware!!!! Dr. Hawk's humorous and tender examples of classroom instruction sets a new standard in higher education.

Anyone who reads this book can't help but glean something positive from it whether they are trying to help themself, someone else, or just gain a better understanding of self-esteem and/or body image. Hawks is right on target in terms of what self-esteem is, where it comes from, external and internal influences, and how it is developed. His writing style is simple yet thought provoking and uses humor appropriately. He incorporates analogies, paradigms, metaphors, and real life experiences masterfully. His message is couched within gospel principles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. From believer to non-believer, however, there is something for everyone in this book. It's a wonderful addition to my library.

I am not one to normally read self help-type books, but this book is a significant contribution to the literature of self esteem and body image. If you have struggled with problems over weight or other physical problems, this book is for you. Hawks writes with a warm, engaging style. He takes a detailed look at body image with an enjoyable combination of wit and insight. Hawks, a health science professor, is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and is a nationally recognized expert in the field of spiritual health. He has spent years studying, and publishing, on the effect of spiritually on health and this book offers some profound insights on the topic. I found the book easy to read, and many chapters left me thinking deeply about things that have affected me my entire life (like my weight). I highly recommend this book.

An innovative approach, -a remarkably accessible book

Dr. Frankel provides a clear and innovative approach to psychotherapy, a viewpoint to which I could immediately relate. Throughout the book, Dr. Frankel proposes, and validates through detailed case examples, a new and courageous approach to treatment. He suggests a shift in thinking in how psychotherapy works, emphasizing the degree to which collaboration between the therapist and patient contributes to its success. Indeed, through his "conjunctive model" two human beings join in the most refreshing way to achieve their common goal of helping the patient. I believe anyone interested in psychotherapy will benefit by reading remarkably accessible book.

3. I would like to recommend a new book to you and your readers, one I believe all psychotherapists should know about, Making Psychotherapy Work: Collaborating Effectively with Your Patient (2007, International Universities Press). In this thoughtful and yet astonishingly candid book, Steve Frankel seeks to answer the basic question, how does fundamental change occur? In his honest, courageous, and straightforward discussion Frankel is willing to ask the hard questions and step well outside of the theoretical and clinical box. In my opinion, this book is a landmark in psychotherapy literature. It will be thought-provoking and useful, in fact indispensable, for therapists at all levels of experience and training.

How therapy heals-a guide for all therapists

In this the third monograph by Dr. Frankel, we are given a practical and systematic guide to addressing the largely non-verbal, relational aspects of psychotherapy. A guide useful both to beginning and experienced therapists, Making Psychotherapy Works describes the conjunctive process that Dr. Frankel maintains is critical to creative change. The beauty of his method is that it is consistent with a range of theoretical orientations. It gives emphasis to the central importance of the striving for genuine intimacy in every successful therapy.
Rather than emphasize any one particular school of psychotherapy, Dr. Frankel underscores the collaborative nature of all successful therapies. Mutuality and respect are critical in his view. However, transitional failures (disjunctions) are inevitable and the therapist's real efforts to correct them (not limited to interpreting errors) are illustrated with numerous case examples. Dr. Frankel's method is applicable to dynamically-informed therapies conducted at different frequencies over varying periods of time.

It was written by Steven S. Charlap, MD who has been involved in providing medical and dental services to residents in long term care facilities since 1989.(...)

A Great Book to Really Ease the Stress

Anyone who has experienced placing a parent in a nursing home knows how stressful the experience is. The event often happens relatively suddenly as mom or dad gets sick, goes to a hospital and then needs a nursing home from that point on. Although there are many books that tell you how to find the right nursing home, there is very little written on making the best of the situation after admission. Finally, someone wrote a user-friendly book that describes the myriad issues one encounters, including what clothing is needed, what gifts are appropriate, getting along with roommates, communicating effectively with facility staff, understanding all the Medicare and Medicaid insurance rules, etc. The book also tackles the painful, but unavoidable issues of preparing for, dealing with, and discussing end of life issues. It is a pretty book with helpful tables, charts, checklists, and resources. If you are about to experience the nursing home admission process and desperately need some way to ease the stress and feel more empowered over the experience, this is the book for you. I know I found it very useful.

Don't be turned away by the pub date--this is still the best book out there on the topic of new product development. The development framework that informs the structure of the book and their prescriptions is insightful and elegant. I have used the book for many years as a main text book for my 'management of technology' classes, to both engineering and business students, and most students love the book, especially those with real life experience. It's a great book to introduce engineering students to business/project management issues for the first time, and visa versa. The cases are also very well selected.

of the book "Revolutionizing Product Development", same authors. The chapters are segmented according to the logic of the previous mentioned book. It is worth mention the chapters about the application of the "Aggregate Project Plan" and "Structuring the Development Funnel". These chapters tell us about the pitfalls and gave some useful proposition on how to solve it. The examples are OK. It could be a bit difficult to undestand how the process works without the previous reference cited before. There is also some "study questions" that suggests that this book is also for training people on Innovation. Very good idea indeed!

This is how a book should be written. The way the author breaks every chapter down into sub chapters, it's true genious. When I first saw this book I thought to myself, "how is this gonna be any different from all the rest?" I picked it up anyway and let me tell you in two words, truly phenomenal! The way he developes each character let me draw my own image of what he was trying to tell you through his writtings. The ending of this book is magnificant. If you love cliff hangers then this is for you. If you don't love cliff hangers, well piss yourself off and read the book anyway, you'll have fun doing it. This is a great story and I hope to see more from this up and coming author. God Bless.

I stumbled onto this book while browsing the Internet, and picked up a copy for my 16 year old daughter. It seemed right up her alley. She reads constantly and expressed her liking for the book upon finishing it. It is a page turner and I must admit all though Science Fiction isn't my normal cup of tea, it is a very exciting read. I couldn't find much information about the author or if he has other published works. I hope more information becomes available.

I feel this book has the making for a wonderful adventure series. It moves very quickly which I enjoyed greatly. I really enjoyed the method in which the author tells the story. He separates each chapter into different sections which represent each character and by doing this he pulls his readers into a more personal relationship with each of them. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a fast paced exciting read.

This large and heavy book is full of inspiration from our founding fathers in the design world. I had the opportunity to hear Mervyn Kurlansky speak at a design conference a few months ago, and he described how long design took before computers made things nice and easy. This book is full of work by designers who had to use "old-fashioned" ways to get their results.

I can appreciate the creative forces of those who paved the way for modern graphic design, just by turing the pages. ..., I demand quality in the content of the book itself. Master's of the 20th Century is worth every penny.

Because graphic design didn't really come of age until this past century, you will experience it's history though the full-color samples in this book.

I recommed this book to all graphic design professionals and to people who like to collect great coffee table books. Anyone who enjoys books with more pictures than words, will appreciate the beauty of this one!

I write bad in English. Then, my review is in languaje Spanish.

An essential component of all mathematical libraries

Until I read this book, I had no perspective on the number of significant constants there are in mathematics. Finch describes in complete detail a large number of constants of interest in mathematics, I didn't count how many are covered, but a list of one per line covers twenty four pages. It was also interesting to note that twelve of the pages list constants between zero and one. I couldn't help but wonder if this cluster represents a bias of the author or that mathematics is somehow naturally biased into this interval.
The coverage of each constant or group of constants follows the pattern of an explanation of how the constant arose, the formulas that are used to define it and an extensive set of references. So extensive that at times the paper devoted to the reference list rivals the amount spent in the explanation of the constant.
There are eight chapters, which group the constants into the following categories:

1) Well-known constants, which covers constants such as Ð, e and the golden mean.
2) Constants associated with number theory.
3) Constants associated with analytic inequalities.
4) Constants associated with the approximation of functions.
5) Constants associated with enumerating discrete structures.
6) Constants associated with functional iteration.
7) Constants associated with complex analysis.
8) Constants associated with geometry.

Separate subject and author indexes are in the back, a most sensible approach as many of the constants are named after the person who first described them.
I consider this book to be an essential component of all mathematical libraries. I have placed it on my "within the grasp" shelf and have strongly recommended to the college library that it be added to the reference collection.

An Instant Classic

This is an instant classic of mathematical exposition, a superb addition to the series Encyclopedia of Mathematics and Its Applications. Steven Finch's engaging style and lucid, self-contained essays on an amazing variety of topics will appeal to a wide audience. Beginners and experts alike will find a treasure trove of stories, unexpected appearances of numbers, connections between different subjects, and unsolved problems (e.g., if x is the square root of 2, is the tower of powers x^x^x irrational?).

From the Preface: "Material about well-known constants appears early and carefully, for the sake of readers without much mathematical background." The well-known constants include Pythagoras' square root of 2, the Golden Mean, Euler's e and gamma, Archimedes' pi, Apery's zeta(3), Catalan's G, Khintchine's K, Feigenbaum's delta, Madelung's M, and Chaitin's Omega.

There are chapters on constants associated with the fields of number theory, real and complex analysis, approximation of functions, enumeration of discrete structures (some from physics), functional iteration (e.g., paper folding), and geometry. A Table of Constants in decimal form directs the reader to sections of the book. Many sections have extensive lists of references, and Finch indicates exactly where in the literature one should look for rigorous proofs and further elaboration. Author and Subject Indexes complement each other. More than sixty figures illuminate the text.

This book shows the mysterious ubiquity and "unreasonable effectiveness" of certain universal constants. Anyone interested in mathematics will benefit from reading it.

An Excellent Piece of Literature

"Maurice" by E.M. Forster is one of my favourite novels. It is so simply and beautifully written and tells a story that all readers will able to relate to in one way or another. A tragic reflection of Forster's own life of closeted homosexuality - the novel itself was written in 1914 when homosexuality was still illegal in Britain and remained unpublished until 1970 - the novel tells the story of Maurice Hall, a young man trying to come to terms with his homosexuality in traditional Edwardian England where his "sort" are arrested for such "crimes". However, when he meets Clive, a fellow student at Cambridge, he realises that he is not alone in his predicament after all. As the events of the story unfold, things become deely sad as Maurice suffers more and more because of a secret that he feels he cannot tell any of his family and friends. The heartwarming ending - which Forster must have hoped for himself as well - is ultimately uplifting and allows the reader to envisage what the future will be like for Maurice themselves.

A Gay Classic Revisited

Written in 1913-1914 E. M. Forster's MAURICE, at his direction, was not published until after his death in 1970 although in the "terminal note" at the end of the novel he says that he changed little of the story over the years. Unless you were a gay man living in 1971 and had been bombarded all your life with how awful homosexuality was, a crime, a sin and a mental illness, you cannot imagine the joy that reading this novel brought since the only person who dies in this novel is Maurice's grandfather. Of course Maurice is beset with self-loathing, fears, depression and loneliness as Edwardian society expected young men who went to Cambridge to marry and repopulate the earth. For instance, when Maurice attempts to discuss his inspeakable problem "of the Oscar Wilde sort," with a family friend Dr. Barry, the physician responded: "'Rubbish, rubbish!'" He further said that the worst thing he could do for Maurice was "discuss it." Maurice is able to rise above or work his way around this non-diagnosis, as well as a trip to a hypnotist to be cured, and have a life with another man.

Some critics say that MAURICE is significant only in a historical context. Let them tell that to the gay teenager who finds this novel in his high school library and reads the beautiful ending, much more possible now than when Forster wrote it. This novel has universal appeal in that Clive, Maurice's first love, takes the easy way out by marrying and having a respectable career (we all know a couple of Clive's), and Maurice, for all his snobbery, grows to understand that love between men can cross class lines. (Forster's biographers note that he had a lover in 1919 who was an Egyptian tram conducter and fell in love with a London policeman in 1930.)

In his fine memoir MISSISSIPPI SISSY Kevin Sessums recalls a conversation with the writer Eudora Welty who made him promise to read Forster's PASSAGE TO INDIA: "'MAURICE is not first-rate Forster, even though I understand the reasons why it would be the only work of his you've read.'" Being in the same boat with Sessums, I cannot disagree or agree with Ms. Welty. I can only say that this is a fine novel indeed. Forster, himself, said in ASPECTS OF THE NOVEL: "The final test for a novel will be our affection for it, as it is the test of friends and of anything else which we cannot define."

By Forster's own definition, he has written a great novel.

A writer at the height of his powers

Like Howards End and The Longest Journey, Maurice belongs to the Novels of England, works which mourned the country's vanishing landscape and celebrated its unique people. Although undoubtedly not one of Forster's greatest novels, Maurice nonethelesss exudes a brilliance of style in every sentence whilst a biting intelligence permeates throughout, far outshining most contemporary works. Written swiftly and without a hitch during one of Forster's most intensely creative periods, the novel affords crucial insight into a writer at the height of his powers.

If ever there were a story of ultimate courage in modern-day life, this is it. Steven Sharp lost both his arms in a farming accident when he was just a teenager, and years later he sued the Case farm equipment company and won. It was an accident that should not have happened. Steven was very careful about safety while doing farm work. The machine with which he was bailing hay suddenly started up and both of his hands were pulled in. He managed to sever both of his arms in one of the most courageous acts that one can imagine, then he walked back to a farm house for help. The agony is difficult to imagine. This is a story not just about Steven, but also about a company which deserved to be sued. Steven moved on with his life without feeling sorry for himself. This is a true story of bravery written by William Mishler, who died in December, 2003 following a brief illness. It's sad that Mishler could not have lived to write more stories of real life events. I can't say enough about the pleasure I got from reading this book. The pleasure came from knowing that there are still good people in this world such as Steven Sharp.

This is an extraordinary narrative in its subject matter and in its writing. As the author, William Mishler, says, it is "a contemporary American story well worth telling, " and he relates this true drama with a sympathy and an energy that do full justice to the enduring courage and resilience of its hero. We are carried along vividly from a quiet, small town in Oregon to a contentious courtroom in Wisconsin, where a dramatic trial takes place. Steven Sharp lives in aptly named Eagle Valley in Eastern Oregon, where the rhythms of country life and hunting and fishing form his character and his destiny. He suffers a horrendous accident with a defective tractor and baler, in which he loses both arms in an attempt to clear some hay from the baler. His agony is described in stark detail as he desperately yet deliberately uses razor-sharp metal in the machine to sever both arms that are being mercilessly pulled into the baler; he then finds the courage to cauterize the stumps on one of the red-hot rollers. Steven tells his story to the author and in the courtroom with a calm and modest conviction that he did what had to be done to save his life and his sanity. He earns our immense admiration and empathy for this act of bravery and for his persistence in helping his team of lawyers bring a successful lawsuit against the Case Corporation of Wisconsin. Case brought all their wealth and power in an attempt to deny Steven his due, but owing to a committed team of Minneapolis lawyers and Steven's and his family's perseverance, Case lost in court and in subsequent appeals. A note at the end of the book indicates that three years after the final verdict, Case has done absolutely nothing to warn their customers of the life-threatening dangers of their machine. William Mishler, a fine poet and writer, becomes deeply involved in the human and legal aspects of the drama, which he describes with a superb attention to detail in an intensely absorbing narrative of great imaginative power
