As an Information Technology consultant working w/health care professionals, I needed a standard reference to better understand my clients' needs.
I was working on my Masters of Accountancy after finishing my MBA, and I was lucky enough to find a Health Care Accounting course which used this text book.
I cannot recommend the book highly enough. If you take the time to read the different sections of the book, and read the (copious) scenario problems at the end of the section where the lessons are applied, you will acquire a much richer understanding of the accounting dynamics in health care.

I work in a health care administration postion and found the book to be very useful for refreshing me on basic accounting concepts as well as covering more complex topics of health care finance and cost accounting. I would highly recommend this book as a reference for health care institutions (especially hospitals) for orientation and as a way to educate their managers. The real-life examples and problems are invaluable for explaining the topics covered in each chapter.

These guys obviously know what they're talking about. Some of the theory was a bit heavy but I liked the idea of their recommendations on how to coordinate counter-terrorism capabilities at political, strategic and tactical levels, because in practice the various agencies are not coordinated and disagree on how to do things at any level - let alone all three!

An impressive amount of things covered. They discuss definitions of terrorism as well as the different types. They also talk about what causes terrorism and people to become a terrorist. The bits on recruitment and how they finance themselves were not only interesting but alarming as it shows you how organised these groups are. Scary! I think the point they make is that terrorist groups are so organised so anyone working against them really needs to be very organised - A bit of a reality-check!

Most people only seem to think of Special Forces when discussing counter-terrorism and don't realise how much there is to it. This is one of the few books i've read that gives a comprehensive overview of counter-terrorism in all aspects, and i've advised on security issues for many years. It covers every angle of counter-terrorism and even goes into political ethics. There's something for everyone and is refreshing in the sense that it's not written in academic terms, but more for the layman and interested person. I think everyone can get something from this book whether they are policy-makers, academics, or even those working in counter-terrorism, and those just interested in something that is such a topical point in this day and age!

I just had my first term exams and they went much smoother with the help of the crunchtime series. I will be using them for every class that I have that they are offered. The flow charts was the only section that did not work for me as that is not the thinking pattern that assists me. But some of the other students who I studied with used them and liked them it depends on how you organize, the capsule was what I used. Great product and helpful in the first year of confusion called law school.

Although there are a lot of books out there about D-Day and the German Atlantic Wall defenses, Stephen J. Zaloga's D-Day Fortifications in Normandy is a welcome addition. As usual, Zaloga is able to synthesize a great deal of useful information about a well-known subject and still produce a book that has insightful and original material. Zaloga has mined the best available English, German and French sources and these are listed in an excellent 2-page bibliography. Overall, this volume is one of the best of Osprey's Fortress series. I have been to Normandy and seen many of the fortifications that Zaloga writes about, yet I still managed to learn new facts about them in this volume.
Zaloga begins the volume with a well-written summary of the design and development of the German army and navy coastal defenses in Normandy. He manages to include a number of interesting facts, including nice-to-know items like the cost of construction. The next section deals with the actual defenses in detail, including a table that lists all strongpoints on the five D-Day beaches and another table that lists all artillery units in range of the beaches. Zaloga also provides great detail on the garrison, including mentioning individual German commanders in various bunkers. The final section on the defenses on D-Day, which covers beach-by-beach, is superb. Throughout, the volume is enhanced with an excellent mix of B/W photos from 1944 and modern color photos. Zaloga also provides excellent detailed color maps for each beach sector, which depict all the key German defenses. The color plates are also very good, depicting various types of German coastal bunkers. Overall, this volume delivers a great deal of well-packaged information for its small size.
The only item that I would disagree with is his assessment that, "the German defenses quickly failed when assaulted by Allied forces on D-Day." It is currently in vogue among many military historians to deride fixed fortifications like the Atlantic Wall as a `white elephant,' but this ignores their intended purpose. Although Rommel hoped to defeat the invasion on the beaches, it was the reserve troops who were supposed to deliver the decisive blow; the coastal defenses were merely intended to delay and disrupt the invaders long enough for the German reserves to deploy. As Zaloga notes, thirty Germans in WN 62 on Omaha Beach were able to inflict hundreds of casualties on the US 1st Infantry Division and to hold out for over six hours. In the British sector, the Hillman bunker complex prevented the British from getting into Caen on D-Day. By and large, the German beach defenses did their job admirably, inflicting several thousand casualties on the Allies and preventing the Allies from reaching many of their D-Day objectives. It was the German C2 errors that prevented a rapid and decisive commitment of mobile reserves that led to failure, not the concept of fixed fortifications. Furthermore, critics of the German Atlantic Wall rarely make any effort to suggest plausible alternatives for a resource-strapped Germany in 1944. The German defenses in Normandy were a good example of `economy of force' and not only were they useful on D-Day, but they helped to slow the Allied drive to capture ports like Cherbourg weeks after the invasion.

Steven Z. Freiberger is one of those writers that comes along once in a generation. Dawn over Suez is the epitome of good history writing, in which Freiberger argues that the United States actually took over the British government for a period of time. A wonderful, compelling, fascinating read. How this got passed over for the Pulitzer is beyond me.

It's been my experience that "Pro Fic" isn't exceptionally well written. However, Day of Descent proves the stereotype wrong. Set in the minutes/hours just following the show cliffhanger "Green Eyes" this book details how the Teconese actually crash landed in the Mojave. It gives a lot of detail about George and his family while exploring slavery. We get to meet rookie detective Matt Sikes and see how he's initially drawn into the plight of the Newcomers.
The continuity was spot on. The writing was crisp and entertaining. This is an absolutely fabulous additon to the Alien Nation universe.

Each chapter brought a smile to my face as I recognized the elements of ancient Heathen tales. An experience as enthralling as fireside storytelling, Days in Midgard shares ancestral wisdom in the finest oral history traditions of pre-literate times of old.

These well written and captivating stories would make good reading even for those without a Heathen background. But for Heathens, they will have a special resonance. Most importantly, they will reconnect you with your own roots. Our heritage is not something to yearn for in a distant past, but something to savour in the living present, in our ordinary lives here in Midgard.

Desmodus starts off with a vivid description of Bogg's world as it has become narrowly focused on sound. In the first pages the author creates a sense of impending terror. This is horror at its best, delightfully gruesome, definitely not for the faint of heart. As the book advances, the reader is caught up in the mysteryof what is really going on. Who is this man Bogg and what is his connection to Desmodus? The reader almost aches with Bogg as he metamorphises into something other than human, yet there is fear too for what he is becoming.
Walker creates a world for the reader, oneof a species unlike any that has ever been imagined. He manages to weave history into the story so skillfully, the reader believes in these fantastical, vampire-like creatures but is not quite certain why.
Walker manages to draw you into this story until you are rooting for the people fighting against these evil forces and sitting on the edge of your seat to see what will happen next. The conclusion is satisfactory but realistic and makes you wonder what this rising new author has in store for us next.

Desmodus is a classic. Walker is going to be the king of the horror genre.
The first chapter was a little slow, unless you enjoy reading old classic styles of greats like Poe or Shakespeare.
After that, I couldn't put it down. The characters come alive and Walker's descriptive style makes the setting easy to visualize.
The only noticeable drawback was the evidence of several gramatical errors but the action is so intense that it is hardly noticeable.
At times, Desmodus can be brutally graphic and at other spots, as erotic as a romance novel. I never heard of the author before,
but I'll definitely be looking for more of his work. This is horror that can actually scare the reader
