A well-documented collection and profiles of groups who sang and made acappella recordings during the 1960s. The authors did an excellent job in providing information about that time period. The author's presents a clear and truthful historical account of what took place among street corner singers. This book is a tribute to all groups who love the vocal group sound and a major contribution to the history of vocal group music. The information provided is insightful and entertaining. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in vocal groups who sang acappella.

An excellent book for record collectors, vocal group enthuasist and students of music history. The authors do an excellent job in providing information about the 1960s acappella era. This book will become the definitive guide to the development of the acappella age. This book is essential for those who want to understand how the vocal group scene of the 1950s impacted the street corner groups of the 1960s.An understanding of the acappella movement of the 60s will help the reader understand why the oldies market, the resurgence of the group sound and the reissueing of classical group recordings of the 50s is so popular today. This book can be used as an "introduction" to the history of rock n roll during the 1960s.

A really good overview and also in depth approach to a new therapy that could well be the next CBT - easy to read and with some very clear examples and analogies. I recommend it to anyone that has found that CBT has some gaps in regards to recurrance and behaviour change.

Still the core ACT book
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-03
In my opinion, this is still the core ACT book to read. This book is just packed with a wealth of information, insights, and novel approaches to clinical problems. There is no other ACT book written to date that matches this one in its scope, overview, and coherence in terms of explaining the ACT model and linking it to the basic behavioral principles with underlie the approach. Even though I've had this book for almost a decade, I still refer to it's dogeared and underlined pages almost every week. If you are a therapist interested in ACT, this book should be in your hands.

Challenging Current Thinking in Clinical Psychology
Helpful Votes: 98 out of 98 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-14
Hayes and colleagues have made an excellent contribution with their book Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) by drawing together many years of theoretical work and practice into a very readable work. The first half of the book outlines the theoretical foundations of ACT. Many recent books in clinical psychology claim to offer a new psychotherapeutic technique or a new approach within a particular conceptual framework. In contrast, Hayes and colleagues present a new and comprehensive conceptual foundation for psychotherapy. They seek to challenge some of the cherished notions in mental health (e.g., that mental disorders always arise from abnormality) and critique some of the central ideas in many popular therapies (e.g., the idea in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy that mental health will be improved by changing the content of one's thoughts). Their argument identifies language and our use of it as both one of the key reasons for humanity's success and our inability to rid ourselves of many mental health issues. For a reflective practitioner or academic, the arguments presented will give the reader much food for thought.

The second half of the book outlines the practice of ACT and as such illustrates the fist part. This sections is excellent in that even thought it uses language to describe ACT, it attempts to use the principles of ACT upon the reader and gives the reader examples to work though at the end of each chapter. Thus, the reader cannot emerge at the end of the book without having been changed by reading the book.

The ability to critique current thinking in clinical psychology is not novel, but the ability to present an alternative is much more rare. Hayes and colleages have done so and have presented it in a way that will be accessible to practitioners and researchers from many different theoretical orientations. A challenging and thought-provoking book.

It is the second book i bought for learning visual C++, and I found it VERY useful, especially for those who is familiar with C++ but know nothing about MFC programming. Comparing to "Programming Visual C++ by Kruglinski", this one is more suitable for new-bee not only cos it has a good intro on VC++(first chapter) but also it uses simple and easy-to-understand language(little jargons).

BUY THIS AS YOUR FIRST BOOK ON VC++

This is a good book for robust GUI develepment in Visual C++. This book assumes the familiarity of the user with C++ concept, so this can not be a book for new learner. This book can be used a reference materials for RAD. This book has very fairly dealt with all the complicated aspect of Visual C++ like DLL, Multithreading, ActiveX control, Memory management etc. Examples provided in this book is really of day to day use, so by customising those example one can build ones own application very fast without any difficulty. This book is very good for GUI development for Microsoft windows. Still there are a lot of scope for further improvement of this book. It would be really good if it provides a bit more information about latest technolgy like DCOM, CORBA, Socket Communication etc. Some example for inter process communication will be useful. By providing all these resources this book will turn out to be really a complete visual C++ book rather being a GUI Book. As a whole this book is good because whatever area it has covered it has tried to provide good information.

I first tried the examination of 70's advertising as nostalgia and boy did I receive it in spades. The comprehensive nature of these books truly allows readers to examine attitudes towards a variety of products (Technology, Business, Cars, Food, Liquor, Movies, etc.) and see how our sensibilities have changed and in many regards regressed. The 80's book highlights the dawn of Spuds McKenzie, the peak of Joe Camel and the advent of Absolut. The ads carry such immediacy that you'll be reminded of ad campaigns, jingles and events you hadn't considered in years. I can't even recall the last time I thought of the MG Midget automobile, but it was wonderful being reminded how much my sister wanted one as her first car. The book is even more valuable when you have other volumes to compare it to as the verbose nature of ads within the 70's seems remarkable compared to the high gloss "image first" approach of the 80's. I adore these books and the introductory chapter also helps frame the time beautifully. I cannot more heartily recommend this book and all the others for readers with even a cursory interest in advertising or popular culture.

The seventh book in the fascinating Taschen 'All-American Ads' series and as editor Jim Heimann says in his short introduction, print creativity wasn't exactly sparkling in the Eighties. Television took most of the ad budget leaving print to soak up what was left with ads that reinforced what had been seen on the small screen. Still, some ads did capture the consumer's imagination, do you remember 'The united colors of Benetton', 'Just do it' for Nike, Maxell cassettes, Swatch and Absolut vodka campaigns?

The 608 pages in this latest book follow the same style as the others, divided into nine chapters which do actually vary in each book according to which decade you are looking at, here Electronics gets a fifty-eight page section all to itself and not an mp3 or DVD player in sight (or a reel-to-reel tape-deck). The ads are either whole page or four to a page and they have all been cleaned up colorwise and corrected to avoid screen clash with the originals.

I enjoyed the section on Entertainment, loads of memory-jogging movie ads showing how Hollywood moved ever closer to the teen and twenties market. Alcohol and Tobacco contains almost the last ads for cigarettes, remember the Camel 'Smooth Character'? As with 'All-American Ads 70s' I thought the best designed stuff was in the Business and Industry chapter, agency designers and typographers could ignore the restraints that often applied to consumer ads.

I now have the seven books in the series (the set will be complete with 'All-American Ads of 1900-1919) and they all reveal a fascinating look at American life and consumer culture over the previous decades.

Review Date: 2001-05-21
This is one of those rare travel books that will inform and entertain the armchair traveler while at the same time provide invaluable information to the trekker setting out to explore one of the Congressionally sponsored National Scenic Trails. Congress established the National Trails System Act in 1968 for the purpose of creating a trail system that would provide long-distance paths through some of the most scenic country in America and preserve trails that contributed to our history. Since 1968 the trail system has designated twelve national historic trails, some eight hundred national recreation trails and eight national scenic trails. This book focuses on the eight National Scenic Trails in the system and is a great guide to the almost 16,000 miles they encompass through 30 states. The trails range in length from 694 miles (the Natchez Trace National Scenic Trail) to the 4,300 mile North Country National Scenic Trail. The trails, due to the diversity of their locations, can be traveled in all four seasons and contain some, if not all, of the best scenery and animal life, not to mention historical significance, that the United States has to offer. The National Scenic Trails are Appalachian, Continental Divide, Florida, Ice Age, Natchez Trace, North Country, Pacific Crest, and Potomac. The book is a combination travel guide and history lesson that is written in a highly readable, fact-filled manner. For each of the eight trails there is a history of the trail, a description of the trail today, a list of points of interest, detailed maps, state-by-state tourist information, a listing of the total mileage of the trail, and the states it traverses. For those of us that probably will not attempt to walk the Appalachian Trail "straight through"(it's 2,144 miles long!) the author thoughtfully gives suggestions on where one can enter the trail at numerous locations and walk for a few hours with time for a picnic lunch. This is a splendid general reference book for the National Scenic Trails. For the reader desiring more specific information on any of the trails the author has included a complete, up-to-date listing of all state and public land agencies, an exhaustive bibliography, an index, and 87 color illustrations and detailed, yet readable, maps. June 2nd is National Trails Day and what better way to learn about those national treasures that getting a copy of this book. This is a perfect example of the quality publications one can expect from the University of Oklahoma Press. Armchair travelers and wanderers of all types will be delighted.

Excellent overview of the NSTs

This book provides and excellent overview of eight National Scenic Trails, from the Appalachian to the Pacific Crest Trails, and including the Natchez Trace, Potomic Heritage, Florida, Continental Divide, North Country, and Ice Age Trails. Each trail gets a separate chapter, and within each chapter we get an historical overview, what each trail is like today, and a fairly comprehensive listing of points of interest for each NST. Maps are also included, though they are not very detailed.

Some of the trails will probably be familiar to most people (the Appalachian and Natchez Trace, for example), but others may not be. I'd never heard of the Florida NST until reading about it here; it stretches from Big Cypress Swamp in the south all the way up and over to the western end of the panhandle near Pensacola. The North Country NST, one of the newest of the trails, is still very much under development and incorporates many local trails in state parks and national forests in the seven states it crosses (NY to ND). The Potomac Heritage NST runs over much of the C&O Canal Towpath along the Potomac River, where there are many historical points of interest.

Armchair travellers might find this book more pertinent than hikers: those in the field might want more detailed information than is provided here. But for anyone planning on hiking any of these trails, or part of them, you will find much good material here to get you started and direct your attention to the more general things you can expect to encounter along the way. The book is well-illustrated, has an excellent index, and is printed on slick, sturdy paper. Highly recommended.

Great Book to Compliment Great Class

Review Date: 2007-07-07
The strength of this book is its organization. The reader is first introduced to the relation of arc length, radius, and angle. Then degrees and radians are learned. Then the unit circle is introduced. This is one of the best ways to learn trig.

The textbook presents the theory in a clear way that is easy to follow. If you were to read the chapter, you know enough to answer any of the problems. And if you were decided between texts, the layout of the problems of this text would be the reason to choose it. That is because of the science and real world applications of the problems. This is not "plug and chug." It is applying what was learned.

For me this book and the class in which it was used formed the foundation of all my latter math courses. This book has some pre-calculus problems, but that isn't its focus. Calculus has its advantages, but I always found trig to be more visual than most things in calculus. It is easier to picture what is actually going on in the math problem. But if you can relate your newly learned problem solving skills when approaching calculus problems, you will have no trouble.

One of my favorite problems in this book, which was included in the sixth edition on page 281, problem 71, is about an arched doorway. I don't know if the current versions have this problem. However it is worth researching. On my website (see my profile), I discuss this problem. And the excellent problems is what make this the best trig book I've seen.

Trickster Tales Delight

Review Date: 2008-05-31
This is a fantastic story about a lazy, messy spider whose home is the eye sore of an animal neighborhood. Anansi envies Hyena, who appears to do no work at all, and yet all his house work is completed. His yard is always beautiful; everything seems in perfect order. The mischievous spider shadows Hyena to discover his secret: a magic stick that does its owner's bidding when a special chant is uttered. Greedy Anansi schemes to obtain the magic stick and its power for himself. However, with great power comes great responsibility--as the sneaky spider soon discovers.

This beautifully illustrated book captures the fun of the Anansi tale while also teaching the importance of one's personal and social responsibilities. What is very nice in this story is the character of Anansi actually looks like a spider whereas in some children's books, he is shown in a more human-like form.

The tale is fun to read out-loud. It echoes the same universal themes as The Sorcerer's Apprentice, and some intriguing lessons might come from comparison / contrasts activities.

I remember Anansi the Spider when I was a child, now I read about the spider with my son! Sheesh!
The little spider has dealings with all the animals in his neighborhood about his messy house. While everyone else cleans and works he sleeps. Finally he decides to do something about it, but with someone else's tool, not thinking of the result.
This book made us crack up. At the same time, it taught us a lesson about not being greedy, and doing your own work.
I recommend it highly.

After reading Steven's first book, Angus and the Hidden Fort, my 10 year old daughter "just had to read" his second book in the series, Angus and the Mysterious House. She told me that she enjoyed both books, but Angus and the Mysterious House was her favorite of the two. It seems that my daughter really related with the 10 year old female character, Taylor Blake, in the story. She talks about her all the time and even did her own story about her for a school assignment. I give these books a big thumbs up! Thanks for writing such great books, Steven, and making very family freindly.

Much of Dr. Anthony Stevens' life work has been attempting to connect Jung's theory with the achievements of modern biology, psychology, and sociology and showing the relevance of Jung's ideas to modern science.
In Archetype Revisited: An Updated Natural History of the Self Dr. Stevens succeeds in doing just that. The main premise of the book is that Carl Jung was well ahead of his time, and that Jungian theory, in author's opinion, has been, for the most part, validated by scientific research in the last forty years.
The ideas presented in the book are complex, but their understanding is made easy by Dr. Stevens' impeccable style and clearly presented arguments. In the best Jungian tradition, the author is not shying away from applying theoretical considerations to contemporary mores, which makes for valuable practical lessons, as well as welcome and refreshing commentaries.
It may well happen that this and other books of Dr. Stevens (most notably Evolutionary Psychiatry written with John Price) will be viewed ultimately as what brought Jungian theory out of relative obscurity and into the mainstream of psychology and biological science.
I found this book very interesting and useful for understanding the key ideas, practical implications, and contemporary scientific proof of Jungian psychology. I highly recommend this book to anyone (especially someone with medical or biological background) interested in Carl Jung and his theory.

Insightfully written by Anthony Stevens (a Jungian analyst, and psychiatrist of 30 years' experience), Archetype Revisited: An Updated Natural History Of The Self is now in a greatly expanded and updated edition. Dr. Stevens provides Jungian students and scholars with a thorough exploration and stimulating study of the connections between archetypes of the fields of ethology and sociobiology, while addressing archetypes in practice such as the family, the mother, the father, masculine and feminine images and more. Archetype Revisited is a worthy and welcome contribution to Jungian Studies reading lists and reference collections.

The Overdue Marriage of Darwin and Jung (Updated)

Fabulous! "The findings of the two new disciplines, evolutionary psychology and evolutionary psychiatry, in no way contradict or supersede Jung's original insights into the nature and influence of the archetypes which make up the human collective unconscious. On the contrary, they corroborate and amplify them. They confirm that human experience and human behavior are complex products of environmental and hereditary forces . . . . What evolutionary psychology is studying is the psychic unity of humankind. This is not, as some critics have suggested, a reductive universalism but an attempt to establish those psychic structures and functions, those strategies and goals, which we all have in common by virtue of our humanity. Far from diminishing our uniqueness as individuals and rendering us prisoners of our genes, this perspective enables us to celebrate with deeper appreciation the ways in which people living in widely different environmental circumstances work out variations of great complexity on similar sets of archetypal themes . . . . In the presence of pervasive cultural uncertainty, it becomes a matter of urgency to understand the basic archetypal needs and resources of humankind."
