I half-expected a dry, preachy text. This book is wonderful -- it gives real life examples of how we can learn from the examples of the Saints.

What a wondeful book we have available to us, especially Catholics. Stories of probably overlooked heroes of the Christian Faith and Catholisism. As you look at your calendar and look at the date you would be reminded time and time again that there is a Saint in Heaven waiting to be rediscovered through The One Year Book Of Saints. This may ispire you to imitate their heroic life or become devout to them to the point you live for Christ and only Him like they did. Read for yourself.

Great Collection of Saints for All Levels of Interest

I developed an amateur interest in the lives of the saints a few years ago, and one of the first (and best) books I bought on the topic was this "One Year Book of Saints." It is what its title says---a clearly formatted (day in the top corner along with page number so you can easily flip to where you want to go) collection of saints for each day of the year; usually the day to which the feast day of the saint in question is attached is used for that day, but not always. Whether you're just learning about the incredible lives of these remarkable people or have spent years studying them, this is a great choice for reference and for enjoyment.

All the most famous saints are covered very well, along with many fairly well knowns and rarities as well. Stevens states the vital stats of the saint (life timelines, etc) at the outset, then gives a full page of information including their early life, contributions to Christianity, canonization dates, and finishes each with the significance and relevance the saint has for us, including a mini-devotion to get you thinking (the "Thought of The Day"). This book combines expert level information and accessible writing that make up a really fun way of learning (or furthering your knowledge) about some of the greatest people to ever live. A must own for any personal collection.

This is a solid and well-organized collection of stories with a page for each day of the year providing a brief biography of saints of the Roman Catholic church. Though it is primarily a resource for Roman Catholic devotional, it is also an interesting and informative study for anyone interested in church history. The organization makes it easy to read as a devotional or in brief sittings as a history or as a reference for a particular individual. Very well done.

This book really exemplifies the struggle and hardships that Yemenite Jews have had to encounter throughout their existence. Although not mentioned in the book, brining Yemenite Jewry into the Holy land proved to be great for both sides, as the Yemenites received freedom from persecution, and Israel received the vast fountains of knowledge which the Yemenite Jews are known to discharge. Yemenite Jews are the holders of the true tradition from Sinai. Aside from the countless traditions which they brought to Israel, they also brought with them information on the true phonology of the Hebrew language. Indeed, as any Israeli will attest to, Yemenite Jews today are of the few remaining Jews in Israel who can truly correctly articulate Hebrew words. Back to the original topic. Dr. Prof. Hayim Tawil, and his co-authors truly did an amazing job bringing this story to life. It was a quick and fascinating read. Prof Hayim Tawil, a graduate from Colombia, with a PHD, truly knows his material. YU is lucky to have a professor like him. I look forward to reading any more books which this genius man comes out with. PROFFESSOR TAWIL, HAZAK U'BARUKH!!!!!

The modern rescue of the remaining Jews from the Arab nation of Yemen is truly a study of what a small band of determined human rights advacates can accomplish on a global scale. The government of Israel was totally unable for 30 years to do anything about the plight of the remaining Jews in Yemen, with families separated for over 30 years with no contact at all - no letters, phone calls or visits. People would live and die totally separated from their loved ones, with not even information of the situation being available to the other family members. This rescue is an example for all right minded people that hard work can result in human dignity and freedom for the oppressed people in this world, and that they cannot be forgotten.

The Zohar relates that every generation has an incarnation of the soul of Moses. As Moses was the first redeemer of the Jewish nation, he represented the collective spiritual soul of the Jewish people. In modern timeas the Jews have finally returned to their ancient homeland, Israel, as a free and independent people.Again the Jews had various redeemers and leaders, latter day incarnations of the spirit of Moses. This volume is the story of a latter day redemption of a small group of Jews and their final return to Israel. This was accomplished by the dedicated work of a small group of Jews who were a collective representation of Moses the earliest redeemer of the Jews. Although most Jews had left the Islamic kingdom of Yemen in 1948-1950 upon hearing of the estableshment of the state of Israel, a small group remained behind ' completely forgotten by their brethern in Israel and the free world. Only some 30 years later did a small band of Yemenite Jews in the U.S. and Israel band together to lobby the free world to push for the liberation of the remaining several thousand Jews of Yemen. led by the author of the book, Dr. Hayim Tawil, They succeeded beyond their wildest dreams in placing this issue on the dockets of international diplomacy. With much hard work, this so-called track two diplomacy was indeed responsible for the liberation of Yemen'S Jews. This book relates this struggle, in all its detail. Its depicts the unusual and odd characters involved in this struggle, as well as the condition and culture of the Jews of Yemen. All this was done in a very quiet fashion, hence little has been told of this noble struggle until now. The volume reads well, and makes for very interesting reading. There are no real villians in this book, as all parties were interested in allowing the Jews to leave Yemen, it was just a matter of developing the proper mechanism , by which no party would lose face. Thus the heroes are the Yemeni government, the Jews of Yemen themselves, and the United states state Dept. and last but not least the small band of Yemenite Jews who worked with great devotion on behalf of their bretheren. In the end most of the Jews were allowed to leave and were re-united with their families. With their mission accomplished these activists returned to their private lives.Today only a handful of Jews remain in Yemen.

I am a co-author of this book. In operation Esther, we tried to present a precise and honest account of how between 1988 and 1992, private citizens such Dr. Tawil from New York, William Wolf from Phoenix, and a small number of simple US, and foreign citizens such as myself, worked hand in hand with the government of the United States, and with the government of the Yemen Arab Republic towards the "opening of the doors for the last Jews of Yemen". Our focus was not on receiving permission for the Jews to got to Israel. This was not a political issue. Rather it was a purely human-right matter. We simply demanded full implementation of existing laws of the Yemen Arab Republic, granting in theory, freedom of travel, emigration, and family reunification anywhere on the planet, to all Yemeni citizens without distinction of race, sex or religion. Understandably, our description at the beginning of the book, of the situation of the Jewish community in the Yemen Arab Republic before 1988, is very gloomy. I think, however, that as we describe the slow changes that occurred under our pressure, the human face of the Yemeni officials became apparent. Ultimately, when we reached our goal and unrestricted freedom of travel was granted to all the Jewish citizens of Yemen in 1991, the Yemeni government appeared as the true winner. This was the test-case for this government to obtain international recognition of it's new born democratic system. At my opinion, Dr. Abdel Karim Al-Yriani, who is now the Prime Minister of Yemen played the most decisive role in this important page of Middle-East's history. It illustrates how in the last decade, both Dr. Al-Yriani and president Saleh transformed Yemen from a totalitarian, militarily-ruled country into the most advanced democracy of the Arab world, with multi-party parliamentary elections, a relatively free and pluralistic press and a much improved track of human right violations. This book also reports on serious clashes we had with the Israeli Mossad. The situation was very simple. They had been in charge of the whole matter for three miserable decades during which not a single Jewish family had been reunited. Now that we were succeeding restoring contacts between separated families and we were preparing for their departure, the Mossad understandably wanted full control. But, keeping in mind our goal, we refused any Mossad involvement because its presence, even in the back stage of our operation, might have had jeopardize our efforts. Keeping whole issue apolitical and strictly at the level of the Human rights was the way to go. The book tells about our struggle and how we succeeded, despite the contradicting efforts of the Israeli Mossad, to bring to the reunification of the Jewish families in Israel, in the US and in the UK. It should be noted that the hundreds of thousands of Jews born in Yemen, but that left Yemen before October 26, 1962, are still not allowed to travel to Yemen. As in the darkest ages of the Soviet Union, departing Jews from Yemen in the years 1948-1962 became deprived, by default, of their citizenship. This act, which was perpetrated by the previous government of the Imams, was against international laws. However, by preventing Yemeni born Jews that live now in Israel, from obtaining Yemeni passports and reenter their country of origin, the present democratic state of Yemen remains in violation of international laws. This is why, I must confess that the tittle of our book is not yet completely meeting our expectations. The door will be opened only once complete freedom of travel will be granted, both ways, in and out, to all the Yemeni born citizens that still miss their country of origin.

Overcoming the Inheritance Taboo is a terrific book. It helped me in two ways. Not only did I learn about the emotional issues surrounding inheritance and the grieving process that sometimes split families apart and why it's so important to talk about these things BEFORE our loved ones die, it gave me the means to do so:

Me: I was reading a great book the other day, Mom, about why people should talk about things like inheritances and dividing up possessions before the family members they care about die - even though it might be hard to bring the subject up. People could avoid a lot of heartache and trouble if they'd only talk about these things openly.

Mom: I suppose that's true. We've never really discussed which of you girls will get what after I die, have we?

Me: No, we haven't.

And so we did. Thanks, Dr. Hendlin!

Dr. Hendlin tackles a famously volatile family situation with insight and grace. His characterizations of the roles various family members play are both witty and excruciatingly accurate. The book is well-crafted structurally and at the granular level: the information is presented in an easy-to-find format, and Hendlin's writing is elegant and lucid, all of which makes it easier to ponder this difficult subject. The effect is like having a spoonful of jam with your medicine.

I'm a female psychiatrist in private practice in the Los Angeles area. I'm seeing an increasing number of boomers coming in dealing with the emotions and family complications related to inheritance. I received an advanced copy of this excellent book and must say I'm very impressed with what Dr. Hendlin has offered.Easy to grasp, no obfuscating jargon, and interesting enough to keep you reading even when the issues are complicated and difficult.

He has nicely outlined the key concerns arising before, during, and after a family crisis. His discussion of underlying psychological dynamics is creative and enlightening. This book will greatly assist the everyday reader facing these issues. I have already recommended it to a number of friends, patients, and colleagues. Thank you, Dr. Hendlin, for your original and courageous contribution.

The author makes an easily avoided subject more than manageable to read. At times, his writing is even absorbing, taking the reader into various intriguing family scenarios. These case histories and stories help the book flow, adding to the insightful and comprehensive information he offers on the psychology of inheritance. The book has been orgaized to make it easy for those in crisis to go directly to the chapters which will be most relevant to them.

The list of the various types of giver and receiver roles was cleverly written and fun to read, in addition to offering solid information. The author gives a step by step method for dealing with the distribution of possessions which readers will find useful as a blueprint for dealing with this difficult task.

Chapters on the basics of estate planning, grieving and preserving sibling relationships after a crisis round out a thorough and enlightening examination of individual and family dynamics surrounding inheritance 'blood wars.'

Adding to the style of this book was the use of highlighted paragraphs to help the reader focus on key insights and concepts. The sharing of the author's own personal experience of grieving added to his sensitivity and credibility.

An excellent book to be welcommed by baby boomers (and their parents) facing the inheritance drama--and all those who want to be spared the pain that so often is part of families dealing with these issues. Relevant for all professionals dealing with emotional side of inheritance. As one who faces estate issues from the legal side, I have been waiting a long time for a book like this to offer my clients.

Holl, brilliantly strings together a tapestry using his own works and interests in science as examples. Taking architecture to the next realm, Holl has allowed the reader to better understand his process of design through excellent photography and thought provoking essays. More than just describing his latest projects, he uses these projects to illustrate and explain his most fundamental design philosophies.

I have three kids under the age of 12. One of my biggest fears is facing the challenge of my kids dealing with peer pressure about drugs as they grow up, and worse going down the dark path of addiction. I don't think I am alone. The challenge is to know how to address the issue with compassion, resolve, and with a sobered understanding of the issues, uncontaminated by media hype. This book helped put my mind at ease and gave me some sensible strategies that I think will be of enormous help for me as a parent and for my kids. This book is a must read for parents and caregivers. It will help you and your child face the challenges of smoking pot in a way that upholds your values as a parent and your love for your children. You will be better for it and so will they.

I have to say, when I saw the publisher (High Times) of A Parent's Guide to Marijuana by Mitch Earleywine PhD, I thought it would be pro-drugs. It isn't. It isn't anti-drugs either; it's that rare beast, a balanced and sensible book about an illegal drug. This book, a guide for parents who want to engage with their children about cannabis without lying, bluffing or lecturing, has a lot to recommend it. It is presented as a dialogue between Dr Earleywine and a group of parents he is working with; while remaining conversational and easy to read, it covers the breadth of scientific literature related to risks (and benefits) of pot. Most impressive is Dr Earleywine's knack for presenting fairly complex scientific ideas in ways that are easy for pretty much anyone to grasp. In doing so, the book invites readers to understand and make their own decisions about the science and what it means for them and their kids. By endorsing the middle ground, Dr Earleywine arms parents to talk about marijuana with their children in a more knowledgeable (and hence more credible) way. He offers general suggestions for talking to children about tricky issues, as well as specific information about pot. The book is short, and, importantly for parents, easy to read in small grabs. I would recommend this book as an excellent resource for those who wish to help their children make safe decisions about marijuana and drug use in general.

Earleywine's new book on the dangers of marijuana for adolescents is accessible in its conversational style, and informative enough to make this reader satisfied she's gotten her money's worth.

Earleywine's studies on marijuana make him one of the country's foremost authorities on the subject. There is no speculation in this work that isn't backed up with hard facts. Although he questions and dispels some popular myths, make no mistake: he is not a marijuana apologist.

Marijuana is dangerous to use during the formative years of adolescence, and Earleywine gives parents the tools to offer this information in a way kids will accept it as viable. Decades of misinformation in drug "education" has left kids suspicious and dismissive of what the experts have to say. It's high time (pardon the pun) there was solid info to impart to our children to help them make the best decision when the time comes to make it.

Not every kid is going to do the smart, reasonable thing, but if I had known this stuff when I was thirteen, I, for one, would not have used.

This book, more than any other, will carry the reader into not only the work, but also the life of legendary designer, Paul Rand. The essays, written by some of today's leading designers and critics, give you an overview of his accomplishments and contributions to the practice of design. Whereas other books largely focus on his work, this book comes to life through tributes from friends and family which outline how great of an impact Rand truly had on our world. Finally, dialogues between Rand and others [in his own words] offer the most honest glimpse into Rand. In addition to this exhaustive account of Rand himself, the book includes beautiful photographs of his work and a timeline of his career for reference.

This book should not be overlooked by anyone serious about graphic design or anyone who is intrigued by the work of Paul Rand.

After reviewing many books on and by Paul Rand, I believe the reader will be amazed of the facts about this genius designer that this book details.

After reading the contibuting materials from many other famous of his peers in the field of graphic design, a reader will be astonished of what this man has contributed to the world of design.

Design is what a reader does not readily see, but visually understands because of its simplicity at the hand of Paul Rand. Beginning with the children's books he was partners in producing, Mr. Rand has contributed more to the field of attractive and interesting graphic design than any other individual I have known.

Having had the honor of working with Mr. Rand, I can only say that his contribution to graphic design will always be missed.

An ok anthology this one. A limited resources type publisher, so it is a trade paperback sized book, but a cheapish one.

The story average here is 3.24, hampered by the fact that a couple of the entries are not up to professional writing standard. If they were, this would be close to your solid 3.5 book. As it is, I'll give it a bonus for the cover, and actually having a go at a superhero anthology, which is certainly worth something for fans of the Phantom.

The other thing is that some of the takes can see The Phantom as grim and humourless, and far more aggressively violent than the comic strip version - perhaps taking their cue from Moonstone comics work, which appears to be like that.

The best work here is at the end, barring Henderson, Murray and Oliveri.

Phantom Prose Rocks!

As a dyed in the (purple) wool Phantom fan, any collection of NEW Phantom prose is welcome. The quality of the 17 stories easily matches the comic book series published by Moonstone.

With a forward by Valerie Falk, contributions from Phantom scholars Ed Rhoades (consultant/artist/author), Will Murray (Doc Savage/Shadow) and accomplished authors David Michelinie, Mike Bullock, , C J Henderson, Ron Fortier, and Craig Shaw Gardner, the variety is outstanding. Disney artist extraordinaire Ruben Procopio's art is a good addition to the tales.

It's hard to pick out a favorite, but many capture the spirit of the Phantom very succinctly.

Can't wait for the 2nd volume.

These stories are bringing The Phantom back to life and doing it very well. There is one story I found to be a long stretch, but I'm not reviewing stories, but a volume of stories. In this volume the Deep Woods call, The Ghost Who Walks remains undying, justice prevails over the darkness of the world, and even when The Phantom seems helpless, he is just about ready to make his next move. A must for any Phantom fan! Quoth the Raven...

The only reason I was buying this book was because I'm a HUGE Phantom Phan;I used to read the series when I was a kid and thought I'd give it a try. So after I read it, I thought it was cute read for kids (duh).

There are some weird grownups in Bailey City. But could the strange man who plays in the orchestra, wears a cape and always has one side of his face shaded really be a phantom haunting the opera? THE BAILEY SCHOOL KIDS ARE GOING TO FIND OUT!

As an advanced Photoshop user, I found this book to be VERY descriptive and easy to understand. Compared to other Phothoshop books that I have seen (that are about 3 times as thick, twice as heavy, and costs twice as much at least), this book provides the same information but in a straight-forward manner. There's no long, boring explanations; instead, it gets right to the point and shows you how to achieve the desired effect. It's at such a great price too . If you are a beginner, you should definitely get this book.

It is simple ,it is easy and most of all it is friendly

This was hands-down the best Photoshop book I've ever read. It helped me build the skills that have now landed me a job at a large graphic design firm. Thanks, Steve!
