Having previously had the opportunity to sit in on one of Mr. Sorensen and Mr. Wilder's lectures on Aggression Management, I was excited to learn that their program was now available in textbook form. The book is as easy to read as their seminars are to follow. The illustrations are clear, and the techniques simple to understand. I am using this book as the basis for training our EMT's, and have recommended it to our nursing staff and security staff as well. I recently learned they will be lecturing in our area again next month, and I look forward to the opportunity to attend their program.

Essentials is the book to read if you are in a healthcare setting, involved in safety/security for any organization actually. Wilder and Sorensen cut to the chase and tell it like it is. The advice in this piece of work is sound, solid and proven. In todays workplace enviorment it is nearly a crime against employees and business invitees not to have read and implemented the information provided by two of the country's premier experts in the field. Just finished my first read through and am about to give it a go again. I know it will be of tremendous help to me and my crew.

I am the owner of a company that specializes in personal safety & defensive tactics for healthcare staff & healthcare safety & security officers.Several days ago came into possession of an outstanding new book. Essentials of Aggression Management in Health Care.I sat down and did the customary "quick read", thinking that it would be just aother of several re-hashings of "handling those people who are out of control in the healthcare setting'. After going over it, I went back and took some real time and read it in depth and highlighted all the life saving / important informaton in the book. (3/4 of my book has several colors of highlighting on it)After being in the training business for many years and traveling the U.S. to many hospitals I find this book i the cutting edge and should be made mandatory for ALL healthcare workers. You must remember that most healthcare providers look at the subjects that they meet CLINICALLY an not CRIMINALLY, they never believe or think that they can be the target of an attack ... until it's too late. ALL healthcare providers from the ones on the street to the late nght staff in a small hospital should, NO, MUST read this book.If you work in healthcare you know some of the risk you face, if your organization seems blind to your risk on the street or in the hospital, THIS is the book to help you and them understand the threat and the answers. This book covers ALL the bases, from verbalization to simple hands on safety. If you have ANY questions on this book and what it offers to the healthcare provider cantact me at DALE4175@WEBTV.NETDon't read this book just once, read it and live it.

This is the best reference book out there. The authors taught me all I ever needed to know in respiratory care and I've been a therapist and respiratory care educator for 25 years. The book is in outline form and will give you information and the facts.... It doesn't read like a novel, but you will have all of the facts you may ever need. Highly recommended. Many respiratory care instructors will hide this text from students because it doesn't give long and detailed explanations on topics. If you are a student looking for a great book you won't sell back, buy this bok. This book will be a one stop shop to study for your exams and the NBRC exams. If you are a therapist looking for one reference book---- this is it!!!!

Keep this book on hand at work

This reference work is as dry as they come; it's also as complete and inclusive as they come. You won't find any illuminating discussions of respiratory techniques or patient management concepts here. The entire book is written in outline form -- definitely "just the facts, ma'am". You won't be tempted to stay up late reading this one for entertainment. So if you are a student, especially if you have not yet begun your clinicals, you don't absolutely need this book --- YET.

But as soon as you DO make your first appearance in a clinical setting (even as a student), make sure you always have the most current edition of this book on hand -- and keep it in your locker, or your colleagues will walk off with it. This exhaustively comprehensive reference will recall for you every little detail of a procedure or concept, all the ones that are right on the tip of your braincell and you can't quite remember them exactly. If you encounter material in the book that is gibberish to you (and you will), you can consult the equally exhaustive bibliography for citations to works that will provide you with more detailed explanations.

Think of this book as the ultimate Google for all things RT.

"The Essentials of Respiratory Care" book is one heck of a book! I have used it for many years as a Registered Respiratory Therapist. Now, I am entering my 3rd year of medical school- I still use this book VERY OFTEN as a reference! The outline format is very convenient and very thorough. My only complaint is that the authors have not seen fit to publish a NEW edition! To my knowledge, the most recent edition is 1990. :-(

I like it so much that I plan on buying it for clinical year. I am hoping that the author decides to publish a newer edition soon though. This book covers everything you will EVER be tested on. Definetly, good to have!

I was looking for books to enhance my Lenten journey this year and I was blessed beyond belief to have "stumbled" across this most beautiful book. It drew me into deep worship with the Lord and such a greater appreciation for the importance of this time of year when we remember Christ's journey to the Cross to pay the debt for the sins of the world. I am very grateful to have discovered this masterpiece and will share it with many.

I have enjoyed the depth with which Steven has written about his Lenten journey. I appreciate all the people of faith that he has drawn from. He is well read, and the book shows that he not only is, but has done his own searching and finding in his relationship with Christ. I am looking forward to following the book through Lent and expect it to draw me to Who is important, Jesus Christ.

This beautifully crafted book, which deserves to be savored reverently, is much more than a perceptive Lenten journal. Purcell's hand lettered text and exquisite watercolors are complemented by sensitive selections from spiritual, literary, and artistic masters, all handsomely presented in full color and spacious layout. In the author's words, this is about "following Christ and--in that journey of faith--discovering the truth about ourselves and the largeness of God's love." It is a book to which the reader will want to return again and again in order to more deeply appreciate its treasures. Lenora Black, OSB

'How are you today, Mom?" "I'm fine, if you overlook a few things." --a conversation between author David Kundtz and his mother. What wise advice! As David Kundtz points out in his book Everyday Serenity, each of us is presented daily with challenges we can do nothing about. We can choose to obsess on these or ignore them and move on. What do you need to ignore today? (description from M.J. Ryan who wrote The Happiness Makeover)

Everyday Serenity: Meditations For People Who Do Too Much, is the latest offering from David J. Kundtz, a psychotherapist, author, and speaker. Dr. Kundtz is an advocate of Stopping, "which is doing nothing--for as briefly as a minute or for as long as a month--for the purpose of becoming more fully awake and remembering who you are." People today are starved for time to themselves. Their days are filled with so many things that have to be done that they have no time for solitude or reflection. Dr. Kundtz's meditations are intended to help people turn those little moments between activities into "stillpoints," where there is no guilt or pressure, where the focus is on just quietly and peacefully being. Those who are able to make such moments for themselves will find that they enjoy life more, and have more energy to do the other things they need to do. Dr. Kundtz divided the book into fourteen chapters, with titles like "Making Room for Life" and "Finding Your Balance." Each chapter is filled with relevant meditations. Finding Your Balance, for example, includes "A Walk Down The Street" and "It Just Is." All the meditations begin with a quote--some from philosophers like Socrates, and some from contemporary sources, like Woody Allen. Dr. Kundtz then offers a quiet "reflection" on the quote, and ends with a suggestion of how the reader might apply it to his or her own life. His reflection on "It Just Is" ends with "today quietly observe what keeps you from going with the flow." Everyday Serenity includes a meditation for each day of the year. Each is designed to serve as an opportunity to "pause for a purpose, to draw you to a moment of both rest and insight." Readers who use them will find themselves "becoming more awake and intentional" with a greater understanding of what they truly want from life and how to get it.

Great quotes offered inspiration. Great research provided the motivation. Don't be fooled that the 1-1/2 page snapshots of a variety of topics from finding peace and balance in your life to receiving permission to stop aren't deep enough. Each word, each question posed in the fourteen chapters address key issues of life and I must have tabbed ten pages for later reference.

As part of a writer's group, I introduced the others to David Kundtz's words of wisdom and encouragement. I know two went and bought his book the next day.

Thanks for reminder in the (adapted) traditional saying: 'All work and no play make Jack and Jill dull kids.' I have to go mountain bike now, and yes, it's the middle of the workday :-)

This book is a great overview of the paralegal field. It briefly covers every aspect of being a paralegal. This would be a great book to read if you are considering becoming a paralegal but aren't sure if it's the right career for you. I have completed a degree in paralegal studies and found this book to be a great review of all the areas I have studied. I'm sure it will be a handy reminder for those areas of paralegal practice that I don't use on a regular basis. I recommend it to everyone from beginning paralegals to those with years of experience. The author has done a great job of writing in a manner that keeps everything simple enough for anyone to understand but detailed enough to be of use to anyone involved in the paralegal field.

I understand that many WOLI students are using this book and I am pleased to recommend it.

I felt that the book was appropriate about Spielberg's enormous contribution to the film industry over his career. The book has wonderful pictures and stories about each film from the first film, The Sugerland Express, to Saving Private Ryan with E.T. The Extra Terrestial, the Indiana Jones trilogy, and Schindler's List among the films listed here. This book chronologizes Spielberg's film-making techniques as well the special and visual effects. I am not one of his biggest fans. I admire his work and contributions to the film industry but I prefer more than the special and visual effects. There are other film-makers and directors out there that do less with more.

This book is a great read for the major films of Spielberg. It is done with a great deal of research by the author, who puts together a very good story line of the producer/director and how he and his films progressed over time. The author also provides excellent background information on the films, from both a technical point of view and also the creative story line. The text layout, photos, and great front and back cover photos are there to flesh out the films. It is also a fun book to read. All put together, this is a very good book to understand Spielberg, his movies, his life, and his impact on very successful creative and commercial 20th century movies.

McKnight-Trontz does a masterful job of celebrating the artist through dazzling illustrations and informative, entertaining narrative. The casual reader will enjoy this book, as will the academic: it's all there between the brilliant covers (Steinweiss design - of course); it is the individual reader's choice as to how deep he or she wants to delve into this fascinating subject of a true twentieth-century art form.

Steven Lawson is the senior pastor of Christ Fellowship Baptist Church in Mobile, Ala., and is widely known for his vibrant expository preaching.

This is the first volume in a planned series of five that will chronologically survey 3,500 years of men who believed in and upheld the doctrines of grace. This volume moves through the pages of Scripture and displays more than 40 biblical authors who delighted in the doctrines of grace and God's sovereignty in salvation. Volumes two through five will take their biographical studies from the pages of church history in the following manner:
Volume 2: Pillars of Grace (2nd - 16th centuries)

Volume 3: Forces of Grace (16th - 17th centuries)

Volume 4: Progress of Grace (17th - 19th centuries)

Volume 5: Triumph of Grace (19th century - present)

An excellent 13-page foreword by John MacArthur opened the book with "Divine Immutability and the Doctrines of Grace." He answers the question of "Why did God determine to elect the redeemed?" by showing the inter-Trinitarian relationship of love and promise and glory. I am glad to see this teaching in print because my audio tapes of MacArthur's sermons on these texts (Titus 1:1-2, 2 Timothy 1:9) wore thin from listening to them so much. I think that this Trinity-in-eternity understanding of the "promise of redemption" did more to help establish the beauty of sovereign grace in my mind than any other dimension of the doctrine.

Right from the beginning, Lawson establishes his belief that true revival comes to the church when biblical theology and doxology ignite the church in a flame of passion for the glory of God. He says, "Over the centuries, seasons of reformation and revival in the church have come when the sovereign grace of God has been openly proclaimed and clearly taught. When a high view of God has been infused into the hearts and minds of God's people, the church has sat on the elevated plateaus of transcendent truth."

You have to love an author that really believes in the power of God's truth to change lives, and who writes with the passion coming out of such a conviction. Lawson says,

"Never has the need been greater for the truths of sovereign grace to be firmly established in the church. ... Let us now embark on this God-exalting, Christ-honoring pursuit. Ultimately, our view of God is at stake. It will affect everything. May we elevate Him in our hearts to the highest place, which belongs exclusively to Him. To God alone be the glory forever and ever. Amen."

An additional strength of the book is his ability to provide a succinct historical context for the life and book of each author. Job, Hosea, Moses, John, Peter, Jesus, etc. - they each are set in their historical context. This has the effect of drilling home the truth that the "doctrines of grace" are not a product of Calvin or Augustine or Spurgeon, but instead are divine truth as known and taught throughout all of God's dealings with mankind. To know God in truth is to have a high view of God's sovereignty.

Lawson writes, "This survey from cover to cover in the Bible will lay an immovable foundation for the sovereign grace of God."

Indeed, that is exactly what this book accomplishes. I look forward with great anticipation to the publication of each of the volumes in this series.

Steven J. Lawson has begun a project that only be called ambitious. Through a series of five volumes, he has set out to trace the long line of godly men who have taught the foundational truths of God's sovereign grace. He will begin with the Bible itself and the godly men found there and history these individuals throughout history to the present. Lawson begins with this book, Foundations of Grace, which spans the years 1400BC - 100 AD.

Never before to my knowledge has such work been attempted. With such am ambitious goal, my expectations for this book were high. But Lawson did not disappoint.

Lawson begins in chapter 1 - "A Long Line of Godly Men" - with something of an overview of the book. Lawson talks about the foundations of the reformed theology finding root in the Bible itself, and shows briefly how those truths were brought into sharp focus in the reformation, spread throughout Europe, crossed the Atlantic to the Americas and continue to be cherished today. He also traces what these central themes of the reformed faith are - the sovereignty of God in life and salvation, the primacy of the glory of God, man's depravity and need of God's sovereign grace, and the doctrines of grace as a lens to see God's saving work accomplished and applied.

From there in chapters 2-8, Lawson begins with Moses and takes the reader through to the very end of the Old Testament with the Minor Prophets, demonstrating the continuing teaching and belief of these same truths about God, his sovereign grace, and man's need of them.

In many ways, the apex of the book comes in the controversially titled chapter "Christ, the Calvinist" (chapter 9). Here and in the next chapter Lawson demonstrates from the gospels that teachings of reformed theology have their root in Jesus himself. Just as the foundation was laid in the Old Testament, so Jesus - the Word incarnate - picks up those same themes and makes them essential to his ministry and teaching. Like George Whitefield, whom he quotes, one can say, "I embrace the Calvinistic scheme, not because of Calvin, but Jesus taught it to me" (pg. 240).

After this, Lawson moves through the rest of the New Testament in chapters 11-18. Beginning with Peter and the book of Acts, Lawson continues to convincingly show that the emphasis and understanding of the reformed faith (i.e., Calvinism) is not something imposed on the Bible, but naturally rises out from it. He demonstrates the fundamental coherence to the Bible's teaching on these issues.

One of the greatest strengths of Foundations is Lawson's writing style. Lawson is a more than capable pastor and it shows in this book. His writing is far from dry, but exhibits a style that is passionate and engaging. This shouldn't be surprising since the original idea and study for this material came from Lawson's Men's discipleship class at his church. (I have to say when I found that out, I struggled with envy over the great blessing those men have in Lawson!)

Another great strength is the book's organization. Each chapter is subdivided into the specific theological themes that Lawson traces out. Themes include things like sovereign grace, definite atonement, choosing and election, etc. This makes the book more coherent (and readable) than if he simply moved from chapter to chapter, book to book, pointing out every verse that spoke to every emphasis in reformed theology.

A final strength is the books the vast mine of material Lawson gives. This book is not only an exceptional work of exposition and biblical theology, it is also a storehouse for quotes and insights from other historic believers. Peppered throughout is something of a preview of Lawson's other forthcoming volumes, as he quotes and references others who in more recent centuries held this faith, once for delivered to the saints.

Few things can be more encouraging than to see the consistency of men and women believing the very truths you hold dear in your life. When I read the Bible or works like Foxe's Book of Martyrs and see God's people holding so dear the truths God has revealed - even to the point of suffering and death - it only serves to make those truths more cherished in my life, and encourage me to love more deeply the God who gave them.

Today, there is a slipping away from the theological truths of Zion. Doctrine is becoming of lesser importance than relevance and excitement. Though the reality is, theology that is truly believed will always be relevant and generate excitement, many want the latter without the former. Relationships and belonging have become more important than believing in some cases. This does not bode well for Christianity. Today more than ever we need a renewing of our understanding of who God is. That understanding should come from our own thoughts or the culture's popular ideas, but from what God himself tells us in his Word.

In light of these things, Lawson's work shines like a light in the growing darkness. Here is a tracing of the some of the most important truths about who God is from God's own Word. If we heed Lawson's teaching from the Bible, we will catch a better glimpse of the glory of God, causing us to more deeply love him and give him the worshipful service of our lives.

Stephen Lawson corresponds in this sizable book with the Christian who has a thirst for the grace of God. In all its magnificence, the men of faith who grace the Bible of God, is played out before us from the theocentric view of God.

Beginning with Moses the lawgiver, Lawson delves into their lives as represented to us in the Word. Drawing out texts, Lawson reveals the 'ability of God' (grace) in their lives as sovereign, thereby resulting in what God determines. The aspect of our understanding that most lacks fruitfulness in this regard, is our limited view of time and life.

God purposes and determines all man's ways. Illustrated time and again, Lawson beautifully resonates the heavenly directive will of God, brought to bear in the lives of the men of faith, linking generations of godly leadership.

'Regeneration is open-heart surgery, a soul-reviving work of the Spirit that probes to the deepest level of a person's being.' pg 97

'Despite Israel's unfaithfulness God continued to call forth a chosen remnant from within the nation to be His elect people.' pg 95

Yes, the doctrines of grace are expounded in true Calvinistic form, for therein the glory of God is brought to bear most beautifully. Lawson makes easy and light reading of a difficult topic, and reduces our intellect to that which it rightfully is: only enlightened once grace has entered our sinful lives.

A beautiful and God-glorying, soul-gratifying work which seeks to inform today's generation of biblical Christians of old truths.

This is a totally awesome book...is what my son said after he read it. And then I read it and I agree! I love Mr. Cousins writing and I wish he would write more! The wonderful detail and use of actual science in this imaginative treasure is astounding! The issue of bullying in this book is sensitively portrayed and also dealt with humor and insight. I think this should be required reading in all schools. It brought up topics around the dinner table for discussion from bugs to treating others with respect and usually back to bugs again. Boys are like that.

Unlike the other kids in his fifth grade class, Adam Cricklestein lives in his own little world of bugs and insects from all over the world. Adam is the first to admit that he is a little bit weird, but this hobby is just innocent fun that doesn't hurt anyone else. But because Jeb McCallister, the sixth grade bully, enjoys torturing Adam and his bugs every chance he gets, Adam is forced to 'create' a bug to protect him from his nemesis. Frankenbug is not only entertaining, but also extremely educational in a conspicuous way that will spark the scientific interests in young readers. Steven Cousins definitely did his homework before writing this book in order to obtain the countless facts about many rare types of 'bugs'. For example, his description of the male and female lightening bug's photinus carolinus (flash pattern used when mating) that Adam used to bring Frankenbug to life was precisely informative. The story line is also set up well, with the reader pulling for Adam (and Frankenbug) to come out ahead of Jeb right down to the very end. This culminates with Jeb's bullying being exposed and Frankenbug being released to live out his life with Adam in his zoo-like bedroom. The only drawback to this book was the lack of depth given to many of the characters. Because Adam was portrayed as the class nerd, children will be reluctant to identify with his character. The introduction of a classmate who was a true-blue type friend to Adam, in spite of his strange hobby, may have been useful to draw in a larger audience. Overall, this is an informative, educational, and entertaining book that many children should enjoy.

Frankenbug is a great book!

I really, really enjoyed the book Frankenbug. I think Mr. Cousins's idea of telling it from the boy's point of view was great and easy to follow. And this was the kind of book where you could easily follow what was going on, and it was just really fun to read!

An Exciting and Unusual story!!

Frankenbug is a really great book that tells the story of a boy who creates a monster bug after seeing the movie Frankenstein. Also mixed into the exciting story are hilarious jokes and good facts about bugs. This is also very realistic because it is told in a real 11 year old boy's voice and is not that complicated. I think that this is a VERY good book and you shouldn't miss out on it.

Free Spirit is a wonderful book It combines history with a facinating story of a girl growing up in the 18 hundreds. Sabra travels to California at a young age and marches to her own drum. She is misunderstood by many, but becomes loved by all. She is true to herself, an adventurer who takes us on a wild ride. I loved this book and would recommend it to anyone who is interested in how the west was born.

Free Spirit is exciting, instructional, and captivating. I could not put it down. My journey through Stevens' book was exhilerating and uplifting...exhilerating from living with the characters, sharing their Gold Rush experiences, and becoming well-informed about California history and about life in the West...uplifting as the characters resolve their problems and surmount obstacles. Free Spirit is a rare treat!
