I first stumbled across Steven's work on the internet while just messing around. The man is an incredible artist, and even better, he is sick in the head. I always loved the simple, strange child like style of Silverstein, but it never went quite far enough. Steven Vincent takes us over the edge and straight into the ground with a sickening splat. Illustrations that by themselves alone just make you laugh because you are either worried by them that much, or you are as sick as Vincent himself. His stories and rhymes will amuse anyone with a decent sense of humor, and will pleasantly offend anyone without one. All my friends I've shown his books to would gladly buy their own copies ... .

I have been a fan of Steven Vincents since he first started his website. I have everything he has published besides publishing several of his cartoons in my own magazine Hacker's Source: Gateway to Independent Horror.

This is one of his best. If you want lots of laughs and you have a great sense of humor you will also love this. When Steven told me he was selling here I had to come and share my love of his work with others who are not familiar with him. You will be 100 percent glad you ordered this and will come back looking for more.

I was intimately involved with the Locnikars for the second part of the book, and found the first part a little hard to believe, until I spoke with a friend who was at the party with Moe on the roof with the Ak47. She confirmed the mound of coke in the closet and more, this was before she read te book!. I thought it was just made up to sell books, it was reality.

Doc left out ALOT in the second half, mostly for fear of getting sued I am guessing. There were even more sad and funny stories that could have been told. I am sure he left some things out to spare certain people allot of shame. I glad he didn't include anything on me. I personally witnessed the morning after the part about the all-consuming paranoia with the ripping apart of the house, it was truly amazing on one hand and also a little scary that a man could do that much damage in one night.

There is definitely enough material here for a movie, but I think that would need to glamorize the badness and the madness too much to fit with Doc's sense of wanting to help others stay out of this dangerous territory.

All in all a very interesting read, you will most likely read it in one sitting. It isn't as funny as it could have been, but I guess that wasn't the point.

If I didn't know this was a true story I would think this is the new fictional HBO series, about rampant drug use and addiction in the "doctor world" instead of the "underworld". Dr. Locnikar had demons to conquer that to the reader appeared to be beyond hope. I couldn't stop reading and even after many months since I've read it, I think about it...especially the last paragraph!

"Doctor Hyde" provides an inside view of a drug addict's thought processes in a surreal world which exists in our own neighborhoods even though we ignore the very thought that we live among such travesty.

It is a shocking reality-check that makes one wonder why and how this can happen to the average individual and yet this is a real-life account of an invincible plastic surgeon who falls victim to an addiction that drives him to near-death and eventual resurrection.

Riveting and disheartening, you will cling to the book with hope and prayer this once-defiant character finds the strength to free himself from the clutches of narcotics. You will leave the book with the fear your children will never follow the same path to hell.

A must read for a look inside America's greatest problem...drug addiction.

Dr. Locnikar, "May God be with you" in your daily struggles.

I recieved my copy of this book very early on. about month after it was first released. (my claim to fame, Steve Voake is related to me, his dad is the son of my grandmother's brother.. confusing eh?) And found the book a brillient literary work. tho a little disturbing that one of the main characters had the same nickname as me.. I recently read the book again to find anything i had missed and was again amazed by its brilliance. I just need to get my mits on the sequal, the web of fire..

This book is about a child Sam Palmer who goes to a world of giant walking bugs, to fulfill a prophecy he has never even heard of. I think this is a great book. The characters are extremly well developed and hilarious, especially Skipper who I find is one of the best characters I have ever come across.

Sam Palmer has always been fascinated with insects, but now he's become obsessed. Suddenly insects also appear to be fascinated with Sam. Wherever he goes, a few wasps follow him. One day he finds a horsefly in his room. He gently corrals it in a glass and sets it free, informing it that it isn't very smart. But that fly knows more than Sam could ever imagine.

Meanwhile, an army in the state of Vermia in another world called Aurobon prepares for war against humans on earth. Their weapon: a virus to be spread by mosquitoes. As they refine their technique, word comes that "the Dreamwalker" has been found --- and that she has a son. Odoursin, Vermia's evil emperor, demands the boy be brought to him.

Sam takes a bike ride and notices a peculiar cloud of wasps. He can't resist following them. Pain stabs his neck, and then everything goes black.

He awakens to nighttime in a strange landscape, marshlands lit with blue-green light. Confused and frightened, he walks toward distant city lights. But his travels are disrupted by a horrendous encounter with a slavering pack of creatures like no one has seen on Earth. The crazed beasts are intent on killing him. Sam realizes he will surely die, but then a group of soldiers appears. His relief is short-lived, however, when the soldiers act like he's a criminal, violently hauling him off to prison. What is going on?

Vermia's enemy state is called Vahlzi, and the army is led by Commander Firebrand. Realizing the Dreamwalker's son has been kidnapped by Vermia, Firebrand decides to send a rescuer, Skipper, who is his best pilot despite her young age.

In prison, Sam meets Skipper who gives him hope of escape. Looking through the window of his cell, he sees three moons and realizes he's in a whole new world. When Sam learns the truth behind his plight, he's shocked. He must fight the evil that seeks to destroy Earth's humans. Meanwhile, his damaged body on Earth remains in a coma.

This original book is filled with ideas I found myself discussing repeatedly with family and friends. In the midst of an urgent plot fueled by a dangerous mission, we find humor, a gutsy female role model, friendship, family relationships, questions about the guardianship of Earth and the balance of nature --- plus a subtle, thrilling celebration of life itself. Speaking of celebration, I understand a sequel to THE DREAMWALKER'S CHILD is in the works. Hooray!

PS: Dear Hollywood: What are you waiting for? This book has "movie potential" stamped on it in huge red letters.

The Education of a Graphic Designer - an excellent addition to every designer's library
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2006-01-24
Noted graphic design author and editor, Steven Heller, has added another title to his list of over ninety books. Actually, The Education of a Graphic Designer, has been a staple for design educators since 1998. The recently published second edition seamlessly picks up where the first edition left off. Edited by Heller, this edition has forty new essays, bringing the title into the 21st Century.

The Education of a Graphic Designer, tackles tough issues about how we learn what we learn and how we teach what we teach. Contributors explore ideas and methods to enhance design education and produce better equipped graphic designers. The book is comprehensive with topics ranging from design theory to the problem with problem solving, the designer as producer to the designer as author, motion graphics to environmental responsibility.

Gone are the days of starting a graphic design career with 50 bucks, a couple of markers, a 360 pad and a t-square. Whether working for a firm, corporation or independently, today's professional graphic designer is part artist, typographer, technician, business person, marketer, anthropologist, researcher and more. Heller and his contributors provide a map through the maze of a very complex educational process.

Thought provoking, challenging and inspirational, this tome isn't just for educators. It's also an excellent resource for practitioners. The concepts discussed in the book will no doubt get novice and seasoned veterans thinking. Thought spawns ideas. Ideas spark dialogue and dialogue is good for the graphic design industry-at-large.

Whether you're a graphic design educator, student, recent grad or an experienced pro, The Education of a Graphic Designer will be a valuable addition to your library.

This informative book should appeal to kids, teenagers and adults alike, who want to learn more about the fascinating realm of ancient Egypt.

Review Date: 2005-08-25
The author based the book on very thorough research enabling the reader "feel the streets" of the countries in the Middle East rather than some superfical think tank approach . Thus, not only are the recommendations to the Muslim World quite on target but they also show the West an alternative to expensive military solutions. The developing nations of the Middle East have a lot to contribute to the global economy if they follow their far eastern counterparts.

Endangered Species is relevant, rational and readable

Endangered Species is a lively, provocative look at why Muslim economies fail-and what to do about it. Schlossstein applies his recent studies of the Muslim economies to his encyclopedic knowledge of the Asian tiger economies to urge that Muslim economies follow those models rather than attempting to ape western democratic capitalism at this stage of their development. Enroute he succinctly surveys economics, religion, culture, institutions and education in several leading Muslim societies, notably Turkey, Egypt, Iran and Morocco. He sees Egypt as perhaps the most likely to reform itself toward a success model. The bibliography is outstanding. I heartily recommend Endangered Species.

This is a must-read analysis of future prospects for global stability. It is a sobering appraisal of the dynamics of economies, religion, energy resources, education, demographics. The reader will not put the book down with a smiley face and a new spring in his step, but he will certainly have a deeper perspective to evaluate the inevitable challenges coming. Schlossstein's best yet---which is saying a lot!

An essential book about making progress in the Middle East
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2005-02-21
Is there a solution to the Middle East crisis? If you are interested in this question then you should read this book. Given the poverty and population growth rates in the Middle East, it is hard to imagine any long-term solution that is not based on economic growth and broad-based prosperity. Unfortunately the Arab world currently lacks a viable economic model. But what economic model? Should it be based exclusively on the Western model or are there others that would be more easily accepted in the Arab world? Schlossstien lucidly argues that the Arab world should look to East Asia, not the West, for their model. The economic transformation that has occurred in East Asia is based on an economic model that embraces Asian cultural values. And, as he describes, it has been remarkably effective in rapidly moving these countries out of poverty. By analogy with East Asia, Arab countries can develop models that include their values. By providing an alternative, Schlossstein dramatically raises the level of discussion in an area of critical importance where there are few new ideas - just a continual rehash of the problems. It is a fascinating read because Schlossstein makes his arguments by taking the reader on a journey through history and comparative religion, with Islam at the center. He deals with issues in a straightforward, often provocative, and occasionally witty style. Schlossstein is clearly someone who is interested in solutions, not ideology. I hope that all those working and making policy decisions in the Middle East will read and discuss this book. Schlossstein has provided the case for a much more positive and constructive discussion about how to move forward. For general readers I also strongly recommend this book. It provides a comprehensive overview of one of the most important issues of our age.

Great Essentials book

Review Date: 2008-06-16
This book is full of great writing by Moench, and great art from a couple of burgeoning artists. In MK Vol.2, we get to experience the beginning of Bill Sienkiewicz's career. After a few episodes, they really hit their stride. The storytelling gets really good both from an artwork perspective and through Moench's writing. (I will admit, though, that some of the dialog is a little stilted, but I kind of chalk that up to the teen target audience and early eighties superhero genre, because Moench's other work on Tales of the Zombie, Werewolf by Night, etc. tends to be less so.)

Here is something that I learned that I did not realize. Frank Miller has a handful of covers during this run. Yes, he was working at marvel at the time, as many of you reading this probably know. Why is this interesting? Miller would one day reinvent Batman, and Doug Moench would go on to spend a significant amount of his career as well to write stories of the caped crusader. In the early eighties, when these Moon Knight comics were running, Batman's more mature image wasn't fully developed. This is interesting, because I have read so many reviews, blogs, etc. that talk about MK as "Marvel's Batman." But, could it be that in this run of the MK series, we are actually seeing the seeds to what would later become the Dark Knight as many of us know him? Could the reincarnation of Batman be modeled off of Moon Knight? (Dark Knight/Moon Knight) I realize I may not be very popular for saying this, but it seems highly plausible and maybe even likely since Batman's "modern age" didn't really start until 1986. Pick up this MK essentials and tell me if it is possible.

Although some of the stories in this volume have not aged all that well, the series really peaked with the last several of the Doug Moench/Bill Sienkewicz issues. When they were on a roll, it was one of the best titles Marvel was publishing at that time. Although the black-and-white reprints lose some of the magic these stories originally had in color, the Essential series is a cheap way to read them all in one volume.

Moon Knight is the Best
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-13
Its been a little more than a year since volume 1 came out, and I've found that volume 2 is as good or even better than the first one. The art continues to improve, and being in black and white just adds to the mysterious feel of Moon Knight.

This volume contains issues 11-30 of the first run of Moon Knight comics, first published in the 1980's. It continues Moon Knights battles with the stranger, grittier villains that the other heroes rarely deal with. Morpheus, Stained Glass Scarlet, Werewolf-by-Night, and Jester are just a few of the odd characters that make appearances.

Yet this series is about more than just Moon Knight. Its a team book as much as Fantastic Four, Avengers, and the X-Men. What makes this team different is that none of major players have costumes (except Moon Knight). Gena, Crawley, Marlene, Frenchie, and even Detective Flint are major characters in their own right, and Moon Knight could not function without them. They help to characterize Moon Knight, and play an important role in many of the stories.

The main character is a team all by himself. Marc Spector, Jake Lockley, Steven Grant and Moon Knight are all different fawcets of one character. Some say that they represent different aspects of the moon: Moon Knight is the full moon, Marc Spector is the new moon, Seven Grant is the waxing moon, and Jake Lockley is the waning moon.
It is differently a series worth reading, and collecting. Definetly worth the five stars!!

Steve's first book (Advanced Project Portfolio Management and the PMO with Gerald Kendall) transformed the perception of a PMO from a project cost management/efficiency cop to a potential profit center, raising the bar for most organizations. He (along with Richard Lanza) has pushed the envelope again making the case for the PMO as the best qualified entity for preventing financial losses to the corporation due to project fraud.

The term project fraud may at first seem a harsh characterization of the poor project success rates that most management accepts as the status quo. However, Rollins and Lanza do an excellent job of mapping the COSO Control Framework to the execution of project objectives and the performance of project personnel. They include diagrams, descriptions and questions to assist in the performance of a Project Fraud Risk Assessment. The underlying conclusions are that poor manmagement of project fraud can seriusly hurt corporate business objectives and that the PMO is best suited to perform this function.

This is must reading for PMO Directors struggling to get the visibility and executive blessing needed to effectively fulfill their mission.

This is a necessary reference for effective project management and Section 404 compliance under Sarbanes-Oxley. The book provideds an abundance of checklists and questions that will make this an ongoing well used reference for ensuring continued corporate governance. The reality of project fraud and its widespread impact is clearly spelled out. Rollins and Lanza accomplished their objective with well stated structures for breaking down the work steps needed to prevent fraud and establish effective internal controls for managing projects. Sub-Title: Preventing Project Fraud And Ensuring Sarbanes-Oxley Compliance

Sarbanes-Oxley is one of those things that you really wish Congress had to apply to themselves rather than just imposing it on the rest of us. It has certainly made life interesting. In terms of project management, it's intent is to ensure that a project proceeds to work on its stated mission, correctly utilizing the projects resources, and eliminate improper dealings with project vendors for personal enrichment.

A key problem is to distinguish between fraud and mismanagement, conspiracy and incompetence. An interesting project discussed in the book is the California State Welfare Automation Project where the project was so confused that they still can't say if fraud ocurred. From this example the reporting procedures that may prevent the reocurrance of such situations is developed by looking as many areas where fraud can at least be expected to occur.

This situation wouldn't be so critical if the law weren't written so that people can be put in jail for not instituting proper controls where proper controls are a matter of opinion. This book gives the best analysis of current thinking, subject to change of course as the courts deal with the problem.

Working Together - Collaborating to Beat Fraud

As a project manager, I was very interested to read this book. The consequences of unchecked fraudulent activity in the public and private sectors does more than affect the "bottom line." It erodes public confidence in the ability of managers to protect the assets assigned to their care.

Within organizations, fraud robs employees of the resources they need to fulfill their obligations. This book gives project managers, auditors, and fraud investigators a "blueprint" for taking effective collaborative action to both uncover and prevent fraud during the life of projects. Since so much business activity is project-based, it's a wonder we had to wait so long for it.

The book's organization makes it easy to follow the argument that fraud can be dealt with effectively. The Preface clearly states the purpose of the book. Each chapter is divided by important topics within. This is accurately reflected in the table of contents. Each chapter is also neatly summarized at the end. It has a helpful index at the back of the book as well.

The Appendices are helpful, too. They supplement the text by providing a "List of Sarbanes-Oxley Act Sections," "Decision Tree for Software Development Projects," and "Project Fraud Management Policy Template."

The authors have the necessary professional credentials and the extensive experience needed to synthesize the subject matter. They have the all-important credibility to support their contentions.

I thought the book brought together the best of project management and financial auditing to offer concerned professionals a "roadmap" to more control. It provides checklists and guidelines that enable project managers and internal auditors to work together.

The book should, of course, appeal to the above-mentioned professionals. It should also be read and understood by top-level corporate managers who want to make use of available professional skills to effectively fight fraud.
