SpongeBob finds a perfect way to celebrate Halloween. As usual, SpongeBob finds a way to amaze everyone, including the reader, and offer a funny, scary Halloween tale for us all to enjoy. My 6 yr old is a big SpongeBob fan, as is my 10 year old. They both have enjoyed this book over and over, even past the holiday.

I loved the book Bigfoot Doesn't Square Dance. It was a real adventure. If you do a bookreport in 3rd grade I`d consider this book. Bigfoot pretends to be a camp counselor, but when a real camp counselor comes he hightails it out of there.

It is a shame that this novel is not better known, but I have to wonder how many authors were inspired by it. Back when vampire novels came in mainly two varieties, "Salem's Lot" clones and "Interview With the Vampire" clones, Reeves-Stevens dared to do something different: write an action-thriller with vampires. Secret vampire societies, a strong female protaganist, wall-to-wall action, a pseudo-scientific "viral" rationale for vampirism...Reeves-Stevens didn't come up with any of these ideas, but he combined them long before most other writers did. If you like vampires, you really owe it to yourself to read this book.

This was the first book by Garfield Reeves-Stevens I read, and I was absolutely hooked from the first chapter. Reeves-Stevens' writing style is one of my favorites, especially the action/combat scenes, as this book demonstrates very well. His version of the vampire legend and where he takes it is both fascinating and unique, and characterization is handled well. If you're into vampire thrillers, I highly recommend this one.

The publisher of this book has a great thing going here...have young and talented writers submit stories and articles and compile them into a self-help book about kids...for kids. The result is a really fun book with interesting insights and stories concerning the youth of America. This is a must have for the teenager in your family and parents who want to crawl inside the minds of young boys just like their own. Some articles are all for fun while others tackle more serious subjects. The clip art in the book is interesting and photos of the authors make reading the chapters more fun. This is the best $9-dollar book you'll ever buy.

As a 34 year old adult woman with epielpsy, I found this book to be a godsend. I was given this book by Dr. Schachter this year. In reading this book, I found that other women share my trials and triumphs with epilepsy. I recommend this book as well as the other "Brainstorms" books. This book should be read by all women with epilespy.

This is a wonderful book. It is a series of different women's narrations of experiences with their epilepsy. The women range in age and interest, as well as to the severety with which their epilepsy has affected their lives. It felt great to put my own difficulties with this illness into context through hearing of other epileptic women.
This is a great book to read if you are an epileptic woman, or the husband/ partner/ boyfriend/ girlfriend friend or relative of one.
So far my father has read it, and I think it has given him a better starting off point with which to talk about my epilepsy with me. (I already have a line of friends and family waiting to read this book.)
The book's author Dr. Krishnamurthy, also heads a comprehensive epilepsy center through Boston's Beth Isreal Hospital. More information about the center is in the book and it is definatly worth investigating.

Excellent book.

I will now pass this book on to my children and family to read along with my friends so they will also understand just what I am going through. Buck, Frank. Bring 'Em Back Alive: The Best of Frank Buck, ed. by Steven Lehrer. Texas Tech, 2000. 248p bibl index afp ISBN 0-89672-430-1, $28.95

In many ways, this is a delightful book. Buck was a familiar and heroic figure to many growing up in the 1930s and 1940s; the numerous illustrations recapture those days. The great zoos of the day owed much to him, partly for the specimens he obtained for them but even more for the publicity he generated and shared. His exploits could not and should not be repeated today, but that should not detract from the sense of adventure his stories evoke. His persona was mirrored in the white hunter in King Kong (the Fay Wray version), but his real life adventures were even more thrilling. The comments by Lehrer (Mount Sinai School of Medicine) are interesting and useful, and his choices of episodes from various of Buck's books are well done. All in all, this is an extremely entertaining book, illustrating a different time and written in a way that brings that time to life. General readers. -F W. Yow, emeritus, Kenyon College

A timeless classic of adventure and daring

A timeless classic of adventure and daring for anyone who 'likes to sit on the edge of his chair and gasp for breath.'-New York Times, 1930 In 1930, the publication of Bring 'Em Back Alive, an instant best seller, made its author, Frank Buck, an international celebrity. These animal stories told by the intrepid Texas animal collector and jungle adventurer enraptured generations of boys. Buck spent his life capturing alive every kind of animal, from birds to snakes to elephants. Because there were no tranquilizer darts in those days, he learned to build traps and snares in ways that prevented injury to the animals he caught. Buck always accompanied his animals on shipboard to America to be sure they were well treated, and refused to sell to anyone who did not have an impeccable reputation for animal care. The creator of the Dallas zoo in the 1920s, Buck was a hero ranking with Lindbergh, Ruth, and Dempsey. The dashing and powerful Buck leapt easily from Simon and Schuster's published pages to the silver screen, portraying himself in Wild Cargo and Fang and Claw. This edition, expanded and edited by Steven Lehrer, captures not only the best of Frank Buck, but also the excitement and glamour of an era and lifestyle that still hold readers spellbound.

...

Between 1910 and 1940, when Frank Buck, the big jungle man, did most of his work, cruelty toward wild animals was generally condoned in the name of "hunting" or "sport."

That his trademark motto, "Bring 'em back alive," made him famous, however, indicates that even in his day human consciousness was high enough to appreciate his respect for animals. Today this consciousness is so widespread that no one could become a hero of his stature by trapping jungle animals for profit.

But he understood animals and respected them, even displayed toward them the care of a mother for her child. When they were injured or sick, he personally tended them, a risky business. A 600-pound tapir he was treating almost killed him. A python saw him as a meal, and a cobra spewed deadly venom in his eyes. Attacked by another cobra, he threw his coat over the snake and pounced on it. He held it beneath him as it wriggled to get free until aides could get a grip on its head and pull it out, like a bird extracting a worm from the ground. The python that had him in its grip was one of the very few he had to kill. He managed to get one arm free enough to reach his sidearm; then he put three rounds in the giant reptile's brain.

From his headquarters at the Raffles Hotel in Singapore, he operated a collecting network that spanned the lush jungles of Malaya, Borneo, Sumatra and India. Over the years, he brought back hundreds of thousands of birds and animals of all kinds for sale to zoos, circuses and private collectors. In 1922, he provided Dallas with an entire zoo of more than 500 specimens. In 1948, he returned to his hometown of Gainesville, Texas, to dedicate the Frank Buck Zoo and the Frank Buck Zoological Society.

From Mr. Buck's eight books, Steven Lehrer has selected the "best" of the material. He has fine sensibilities as an editor. However, the books are so full of good, old-fashioned, movie-serial-type adventures in wild, exotic settings, that Mr. Lehrer could have closed his eyes and picked 19 chapters that would make a good collection. The surprising thing is that, until now, no one else has.

What few could have done better, however, is write the illuminating introduction summarizing Mr. Buck's early interest in animals and birds as a boy in Plano and along Turtle Creek, and his brief dalliance with crime, marriage and other enterprises before setting out on his lifelong search for "the source of the wind, the mouth of the river, the oceans to which the fish swam, and the far lands to which the birds flew."

The introduction to Buddhist thought and philosophy is worth the price of this book. The astrological interpretations, given from this Buddhist perspective, offer peace and tranquility in the face of stormy life-situations and inner turmoil. The message which permeates these pages is: you are not mortal; your true being is one with life, not at odds with life. Buddhist Astrology--the book and the approach--pierces through the veil of an illusional mortality. Astrological consultations, whether through a personal astrologer or through a well-written book, ought to bring hope, peace, comfort to the seeker. These things are to be found here.

I have so enjoyed this book! The author gives a clear description of basic Buddhist philosophy in the first 5 chapters, including an inspired interpretation of a natal chart for the Buddha. Then he describes each of the 12 Houses and gives lively descriptions of the meaning associated with the moon, sun and planets. I took out my own chart to learn more about my own natal chart. The only negative criticism I have is that the book nowhere gives the symbols for the planets so I had difficulty reading my chart.
The book ends with a delightful biography of the author who, though born a Canadian, became a Buddhist monk , lived in Dharmsala, was taught by the Dalai Lama, did a 3 year retreat in a mountian cave and after 13 years was given permission by the Dalai Lama to give up his ordination and teach Buddhism in the West. His description of this life is fascinating.
There is a glossary of Buddhist terms,a bibliography.and an index - all things a good book needs!

real Buddhist Psychology integrated with Western Astrology

Review Date: 2003-03-12
The main author, Jhampa Shaneman has extraordinary Buddhist background including the traditional 3 years retreat of Tibetan Tantric Buddhism. From his biographical sketch at the end of this book (and his website) you know how devoted he is about his practice. Actually this what I was impressed the most.

Due to such kind of practices, as well as his knowledge, experiment and practices of Western Astrology, we can see in-depth perspectives applying Western Astrology to our mind, which is the core and source of our daily-life, past, present and future... Thus Astrology is useful to us in a very practical way. Western Astrology has been very close to western Psychology after Jung. However, this book presents Astrological Psychology with the deepest school of eastern Psychology... which is worth reading and thinking about.

One of the most special points in this book is that he tried to trace Buddha's birthchart out of records and we can find very reasonable and helpful information out of his interpretation of the chart, including tracing the time and inner-experience when Siddhartha (Buddha's name before he became enlightened) escaped from his palace and attained Buddhahood.

Jhampa's Buddhist teachers including Lama Yeshe and many greatest gurus of the century. The most famous western Tibetan scholars nowadays like Robert Thurman, Jeffery Hopkins, are about the same time or later as his beginning of studying. And he is also one of the few westerners permited by His Holiness Dalai Lama to teach all levels of Buddhism.

From his website, you will find more of his information:
http://www....-astrology.com/

Sorry that I cannot express well with all the good points of this book. I will try to tell more later.

Buddhist philosophy and application to daily living and understanding how the underlying influences of astrology affect us was most thought provoking. Business Ratios and Formulas, A Comprehensive Guide, is the most thorough reference book of its type. Steven Bragg provides a complete explanation of each business ratio and formula and follows each with a scenario example of their applications. Also provided is a discussion of how the resultant calculation can be misleading or should be used in conjunction with other ratios. I have not seen this feature in any other book of its kind.

Another excellent feature of the book is the chapter on "Measurement Analysis with an Electronic Spreadsheet", which describes the use of Microsoft Excel to assist the business professional in automating the analysis. Five types of analyses are included in this chapter: financial statements, project analysis, investment analysis, risk analysis and trend analysis.

In the introduction to the text Mr. Bragg states, "Even if a company has developed a reasonable set of measurements, this does not mean that they should never be changed." As a controller I am in the process of re-examining my company's measurement process. This book is an invaluable resource. Excellent for both the professional and student. A book I wish I had during my MBA studies.

This is not an easy-read book. It is much like a cookbook - there are all kinds of recipes (formulas) identified and explained. A must-read for anyone who wants to start, run, and grow a business.

After reading this book you should be impressed with the fact that every business can be viewed as a database of numbers (statistics). The quality of the databases will vary, often significantly, but all businesses can build quality databases if they so desire. If they do, then they can take advantage of the priceless information included in this book.

I used to work for a small company that refused to keep accurate accounting records. All they worried about it seemed was the cash flow schedule so they could pay their bills. I tried to impress upon them the importance of well-kept books so the health status of the business could always be identified quickly, and strategic planning could be performed to increase profitability or to pursue growth pursuant to a plan. If they had kept books as I suggested, then they wold have been able to take advantage of the book I'm reviewing here.

By reading this book and taking note of the financial data necessary to plug and chug the formulas, you will be knowledgeable about how to set up your accounting records on Quickbooks Pro or whatever other accounting software your company uses. And the better those accounts are set up, the better you will be able to use the information provided in this book.

What do farm animals do all day? Well, they certainly stay busy, busy, busy! Kind of like the kiddos that will read all about them in Busy Barnyard.

Sixth in Tricycle Press' Busy board book series, Busy Barnyard takes an up close and personal look at farm animals on-location doing what they do best. In lyrical fashion, the author/photographer team perfectly complement one another to catch the essence of barnyard life. This isn't your typical "cows moo" book either. No, instead the animals romp, kiss, scrub and boss--and there is a little humor also with crossing chickens.

I've never met a child that wasn't fascinated with farm animals. This sturdy board book will be a welcome addition to any toddler's library.

Armchair Interviews says: Busy Barnyard is a lively look at farm life for the toddling crowd.
