This is a good Polymer Chemistry Textbook. It is very informative. However, it isn't the most exciting read. The book is completely black and white, making it hard to read for extended periods of time. I would recommend this textbook for the quality of it's information.

Just wanted to mention two other introductory polymer books:

Polymers (Oxford Chemistry Primers) by David J. Walton & J. Phillip Lorimer. This book is just a brief intro to the field. Wouldn't use it for a full semester course.

The Chemistry of Polymers by J.W. Nicholson, 2nd edition, published by the Royal Society of Chemistry, ISBN 0854045589. This one IS suitable for a 1 semester course.

Both are very good.

Polymer Chemistry-An Excellent Introduction

"Polymer Chemistry: An Introduction" is an excellent text for an upper division undergraduate or graduate level course in polymer chemistry. The book is also enjoyable to read for scientists and engineers in the polymer and materials fields. The content is logically organized, there is fairly in-depth discussion of mechanisms of polymerization reactions and of the origins of stereoregularity in polymers, and the problems at the end of each chapter are more than adequate for reviewing the subject matter. Professor Stevens clearly introduces the reader to the subject of polymer chemistry, relating the physical properties of macromolecular materials to polymer orientation, microstructure, stereochemistry and chemical composition. He also provides an enormous amount of information on the history of polymers in a fashion that effectively reinforces the important concepts being described. I find myself referring to this text far more frequently than the other polymer texts on my bookshelves.

This textbook does an excellent job of going over the basics of polmer chemistry. There are insightful questions at the end of chapters that make students think and the book goes over the material in such a way that a background in organic chemistry is not necessary. If you need to learn about polymer chemistry on your own, this book is an excellent purchase.

I was not able to fit polymer chem into my schedule at University, so I bought this book after graduating. This book is extremely organized and provides a lot of examples. The first of three sections provides a great introduction with the focus on definitions and structure. This is accomplished with very little reference to reactions.
The next two sections, which are titled vinyl and nonvinyl polymers respectively, address reaction mechanisms and kinetics. This layout allowed for smooth transitions between sections and concepts were introduced and reinforced smoothly.
The other thing I liked about it, is the continuous reinforcement of nomenclature...every time a name was used a corresponding structure was on that same page.

This is one of the best texts on the core concepts of Economics that has ever seen the light of day. It is not easy going, so you should first master a more elementary text, like Paul Heyne's The Economic Way of Thinking Economic Way of Thinking, The (11th Edition), and maybe even an intermediate text, like the famous Exchange And Production Theory In Use by Alchian and Allen Exchange and Production Theory in Use, but whether you prepare only a little or prepare a lot, this is the frosting on the cake.

It is truly unfortunate that Professor Friedman spent most of his professional life developing the macroeconomic and monetary literature, when he was so very lucid in the more important topics of price theory and political economy. But make use of the treats that he left us, even if they are far too few.

This is the BEST book on price theory ever written.

A serious book for serious students - no glossy pages, no color, and not a single wasted word. Friedman's book is the most authoritative and definitive textbook on Price Theory around. The material may be more difficult than some textbooks but this is, after all, economics Chicago style. Price Theory offers a rigorous and demanding treatment of the subject, exactly what a serious student should want.

I was lucky enough to take Dr. Friedman's two-quarter graduate sequence in price theory (called "microeconomics" elsewhere) in the early 70s at the University of Chicago. This book was the textbook. I have never revised my original opinion that Friedman's 301 and 302 were simply outstanding, maybe the best courses I ever had in economics.

You can put that in perspective when I tell you I spent ten years at Chicago, earning both my bachelor's and PhD -- by this I mean I took a lot of economics courses. If you know anything about the Chicago School of Economics you are aware that price theory occupies a special place in their scheme of things.

The good Doctor retired from Chicago around 1973 or 1974, if I am not mistaken (he moved to the Hoover Institution. You can't take "Milton" on price theory today -- but you can read his book. And it what a fine book it is. I recommend reading George Stigler's "The Theory of Price" before attemption this book. Master them both and you will have a very solid foothold on price theory.

A great intuitive approach

When i studied microeconomics i paid too much attention on the "inner" sense of models (perfect and unperfect markets). But this way of studying keeps a student a little bit far from what really matters in any of them: its power to explain, its power to catch up essential features from social reality (in this case, essential features from flesh-and-bone markets). Well, this book helped me a lot to restore my sense of reality when i think of basic microeconomic concepts (demand and supply curves, marginal cost / productivity, etc.). Friedman has an intuitive approach to microeconomics. He shows that models are engines to think of economic reality, they are not by themselves the ultimate goals of economic science. Study models. Do it properly. If in the road you feel your mind lost, take back to this classic and make a review of your usual assumptions. Economics is mathematics, yes, but with economic sense what stands for good understanding of what it is being modelled.

I strongly recommend to read this textbook in microeconomics before starting others, with a more mathematical approach.

Using the email format of the previous book but also expanding into some essays, "Puppy's Tales" continues the journey of Puppy and her master Steven. The book covers the period of April 2004 to August 2005. During that time, Puppy and Steven have to deal with mundane issues such as her divorce, the realities of being poly, finding more partners, and deepening since of property and ownership as well as partnership they discover. I was particularly pleased that we see more of Steven in this book because it is very rare for tops, dominants, and sadists to share their motivations and feelings -- most of the time they discuss how-to do an activities or push their bottom, sub, masochist to explore an explain themselves. The result of such openness on both Puppy's and Steven's part is a good example of real life BDSM in action.

I will note that I am mentioned a few times in this book but I did not allow that to affect my review of it. I put this book through the same expectations I do every book I review.

Unique, I highly recommend Puppy's Tales

Great read, I enjoyed this book very much. It is different then the first book which I also enjoyed. The first book was puppy and Steven's written communications which leads into her telling parts of her life growing up. In this book it stays in the present, their life and thoughts together. Most books are descriptive in their writing this book is conversational with narrative thrown in every once in a while, which I liked.

Some of the things I enjoyed were puppy's thoughts on BDSM events like International Mr. Leather and other BDSM events, since I've never been to anything like these events. Their discussion of love, which I felt Steven needed to explain himself better and I then the surprise, and what a surprise it is, Puppy's husband finds and reads her book the puppy papers to discover his wife's infidelity in detail, is mind boggling. So now a divorce is part of their life.

There is plenty of S/M and erotic sex, both private and public that I found very exciting. The sex scenes were not written as I expected as erotic stories, they were different, they were described, recounted in conversation; wow, very different. I loved the oral sex lessons and the Maid and Butler correspondences. I like the fact that S/M is very sexually exciting to sadistic Steven and his masochistic puppy. Puppy herself is very kinky; the scenes in the public dungeons and at Steven's sex club are hot. Now with all that is going on in puppy's life, Steven decides to bring another woman into their relationship that becomes part of their S/M sex scenes. I liked the fact that puppy talks about the reality of being a woman, in having periods. I also liked the fact they don't preach or try to justify what they do and why they do them. Believe me, there is a lot going on in this book.

I've never read a book that opened up people's lives and relationship as completely as this one; it's kinky, offbeat, just plain different, it's truly fascinating. I really got to know puppy and Steven and I like them, she is an intelligent, highly train professional woman who needs to be a submissive/slave to Steven. I like Steven even though he is hard to relate to. So I went on the Internet and looked him up, he is who he says he is, which made me trust what they were saying, because for me truth and honesty is the point of this book.

I found this book to be well crafted and very well written, I highly recommend Puppy's Tales.

Extraordinary, on the cutting edge of life.

I just happened to stumble across this book in a search and was intrigued by the cover which is an interpretation of a Helmut Newton photo in his book White Women. I read a lot of books and most don't leave much of an impression. I am not into BDSM in fact I don't understand it, but I enjoy reading books that are not in the main stream, looking for those books that are over looked, that are in the vanguard (which there isn't many of).

Wow, Puppy's Tales is extraordinary, I feel it's better and more important a book then Jack Kerouac's On the Road. The authors mix everyday life with their SM philosophy and lifestyle and let the reader into their thought process through open and honest communication, this blew me away. The ease that the authors have conveyed the complexity of their relationship with their in depth discussion of their SM philosophy is spellbinding.

I have to say that SM scares me and I would normally never approve of what Steven and puppy do, I found the SM scenes wildly hot and the sex was the best I have ever read. I have never read sex scenes from two points of views, it was brilliantly constructed. The intertwining of job, marital problems, everyday life, working on book projects together, having other women in their life, plus, plus, plus all revolving around their Master/slave lifestyle relationship was fascinating.

I was surprised at how good the writing was, there were no lulls, Puppy is a great writer, she has the ability to put her thoughts and feeling into words and makes you see, feel, and understand where she is at every moment. As for Steven at the very end of the book there is a piece that he wrote about the death of two of his dogs that make you realize the depth of this man. You can't make a book like this up. Puppy's Tales is without a doubt extraordinary, different, in a class of its own, on the cutting edge of life.

Overall, "Puppy's Tails" is a worthwhile and enjoyable read

"Puppy's Tails", by Puppy Sharon and Steven Toushin, reviewed by Mistress Jenn

Despite its title, "Puppy's Tails" has nothing to do with puppy play and despite the cover art it also has nothing to do with pony play. Rather, it is a book about the development of a complex D/s relationship between the authors. "Puppy's Tails" is a sequel to the "Puppy Papers" which was released several years ago.

"Puppy's Tails" is a deeper, more sophisticated, and more interesting work than the earlier book. It continues to follow the format of the original book, which is a series of e-mail exchanges between a Master and his girl. Like the original work, "Puppy's Tails" has a definite feel of voyeurism and exhibitionism about it. In reading it, I felt like I was in Sharon's computer, rummaging through her personal files and finding some things of interest, some not.

In her e-mails, Sharon talks about her job, about suffering through a dinner with her brother-in law, and, of course, about BDSM and the psychology involved in a D/s relationship. Running through almost all of Sharon's messages is a strong D/s thread and an awareness of the increasing centrality in her life of her Master.

This book definitely benefits from the increased contribution of Steven Toushin, who is Sharon's Master. Toushin writes not only about what he does with Sharon, but why he does it. He explains why Sharon responds the way she does and makes clear what he is trying to develop in their D/s relationship. He gives a focus to "Puppy's Papers" that otherwise would be lacking.

Overall, "Puppy's Tails" is a worthwhile and enjoyable read. Mixed in with the rest of Sharon's life are discussions of serious D/s relationship issues and general questions of BDSM philosophy. The book has a definite sexual focus with frequent intercourse, vaginal fistings, and many hot scenes. What makes this book most rewarding is the fascinating details it provides of the interaction between a Master and his girl.

Puppy's Tales Review

This second installment of puppy's story used the same device as the first (Puppy Papers), a series of email correspondences between Steven and puppy Sharon over a period of a year. We are privy to the developing and deepening trust between these two as sharon explains how it feels to be exposed for the first time to public sex, being pierced & tattooed (see the gorgeous pictures at the end of the book), and delving further into intense sexual play. The effects of puppy's unflinching faith and willingness to submit to Steven does something unexpectedly nice, it brings Steven from out of the shadows. The more she is willing to share about her burgeoning life in BDSM the more he begins to reveal himself as well. It is through her we get to know him, a very symbiotic relationship. The reader becomes witness to a relationship maturing in a way that most of us only dream about.

Recently a co-worker was reading the personals during a break and scoffed at one in which a BDSM top (man) was looking for a submissive woman. She rolled her eyes at the idea of it. The idea of a man looking to control a woman, to inflict pain, and or use humiliation is taboo indeed. I almost suggested she read Puppy's Tales. It is the antithesis or the antidote (however you want to look at it) of the stereotype of a man using rough sex as a way to release his hate for women. It is very clear that Steven and puppy are truly enjoying themselves and each other. Hey...how can one argue against something that produces regular multiple orgasms. I mean really...what more needs to be said?!

These two are intimate with each other on many levels, have great sex, and work hard on communicating. Here it is folks...the manual to a long healthy sex life with a partner! Read and learn. As with the first installment, all the juicy details of their play are interspersed with details of daily life: dinners with family, hassles at work, and the end of sharon's marriage (which plays out in the most fascinating way).

I was surprised to find this book touching, sweet really. Steven and puppy open up their lives to us. They show us two successful mature individuals who work damn hard on their relationship and reap the rewards. The moral of the story? All relationships need the same ingredients to be healthy: communication, trust, and desire. Oh, and by the way, you'll be able to get off on this book too. There is an excellent section on the art of fellatio and sharon explains on more than one occasion how she ends up wet and throbbing.

Sequels are rarely better than the original. I think perhaps Puppy's Tales is an exception. Really though, the two books build upon each other. You will feel like these two are your friends by the end. Hell, you probably know more about them than any of your friends! A brave and juicy book.

The whole current production run of this book has a defect. A glue is bleeding through on the inside of the hard cover fold, front and back. This does not seem to affect the structural quality of the book and is not visible from the outside. If you need this book and get it with this defect, don't bother trying to exchange it.

If the two first volumes of "The Quantum Theory of Fields" were considered masterpieces in a modern and original presentation of the basics of quantum field theory and its penetration in the recent development of particle physics, with the machinery of spontaneously broken gauge theories, the new volume embraces the wide subject of supersymmetry in Weinberg's typical style, which always means a self-contained treatment of the subject, from its foundations and motivations, to its most recent application as a possible scenario for new physics beyond the Standard Model.

Finding good introductions to supersymmetry can be difficult. Most introductions concentrate on N=1 supersymmetry in four dimensions, and there the superfield forumlation can be useful. However, when you go to N=2 supersymmetry (e.g. when considering theories in five or more dimensions), component fields can be better. Many times it's a matter of taste. For those cases, you have to go to review articles. Anyway, Weinberg concentrates on N=1 4D supersymmetry and supergravity using the superfield formalism. However, he ventures into the N=2 strong-weak coupling results of Seiberg and Witten, which are now a fundamental part of (supersymmetric) field theory. The text is, as the previous volumes are, a fantastic resource for learning the subject, and as a reference (for things like gravity- and gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking, as well as the minimal supersymmetric standard model, which are open areas of reserach). As for all modern areas of research, the body of knowledge is stacked higher every year; but the topics covered here stand as solid fundamentals of supersymmetry. For more advanced topics, one is forced to go to the recent literature.

I'm a beginning graduate student in theoretical physics, who learned SUSY from the ground up from Weinberg's text. Weinberg is (in my opinion) by far the best text I could find on SUSY. It is totally self-contained* - every equation can be checked by the reader; the idea's are solidly explained, and the choice of topics is extremely relevant. However, I should say that this is probably not a book for those looking for a quick introduction, or a sketch of the subject (which are valuable in their own right).

In the very beginning (I knew very little SUSY) my impulse was to avoid this book, as the "notation" seemed kind of heavy, there were too many long equations (superfield identities), and it was clear that reading the book was going to be a serious endeavor**. Instead I was looking for a quick fix. However, having found the other sources inadequate***, I gave Weinberg another try. I learned how to read his book (from the point of view of a beginner; a veteran can easily use it as a reference)~ read it actively, checking the equations at the level of looking for typos. I poured in many hard hours, and have a binder full of derivations to show for it****. But as a result one is very well equipped to tackle the literature.

I especially appreciate how Weinberg builds SUSY from the ground up. He makes it come together so logically, and coherently, it is nice to watch, and I feel one is rewarded in deeper understanding.

His treatment is often original and improves in many ways upon the original literature. For example, his treatment of SUSY representation theory and constructions of superfields. Also his treatment of holomorphy arguments is the best I've found anywhere (literature included). His treatment of Seiberg-Witten is his own pedagogically minded retelling of that story ~ it takes a slightly different angle than the original work, and fills in many of the details. Reading the original Seiberg-Witten afterwards was much facilitated.

A word on prerequisites: A basic knowledge of QFT is needed ~ if you have Weinberg's Vol I, II, this is overkill. However, you should be comfortable with the representation theory of the Lorentz group ~ especially spinors. Weinberg provides useful appendices on spinors in Vol III, and has the rep. theory in Vol I (an understanding of angular momentum at the level of say Sakurai ch 3 helps here). To understand the interesting non-perturbative results (chapter 29) you must be comfortable with 1-loop beta functions in YM, and the chiral anomaly (covered in Vol II as well as many other texts).

A caution on typos: There are many minor typos which you probably won't notice unless you rederive the particular offending equation. I know of about fifty (over a range of about 300 pages). The nature of the subject is such that there could have been many more though (lot's of long equations with many indexes). Luckily, the errors often do not propagate ~ subsequent equations are usually typo free. There doesn't seem to be an errata website, which is unfortunate.

Finally, there are a few exercises after each chapter. Some of them seem intellectually gratifying, and some are rather messy algebra.

* With the exception of some of the MSSM stuff, but this is clearly stated, and totally reasonable.
** But alas, for a beginning student, this is the nature of the subject.
***There is one fantastic supplement to Weinberg (after you've gone through the first couple of intro chapters), these are Argyres' notes. They nicely cover Seiberg duality which Weinberg doesn't talk about (but he does a great job with Seiberg-Witten).
**** The meat of the book can in principle be covered in < 2.5 months by a super-dedicated student (skipping the SUGRA chapter) and of course depending on one's incoming background and interest!

I am a parent of a kindergarten and second grade child. Someone told me about this book a year ago and I just got around to reading it. I don't know why I waited this long. I've read lots of books about children and reading but Raising Readers is by far the best...FAR better than Jim Trelease's Read Aloud Handbook. This is not so much a book about what to do with your young child to teach them but how young children LEARN to read by reading to them. The book is informative, funny, easily read, and honest. Every parent of a young child (or even an older child) shoud read it.

I feel relatively certain you'll be surprised by this book, and very pleased with it. Like one of the other reviewers, I heard about it from a friend -- It's not the kind of literacy theory that gets promoted on TV. After I first read it 9 years ago, it was as if I finally understood something that I always should have understood, and something that I remember *wishing* I'd understood while growing up. The ideas and approaches that Bialostok clearly and engagingly lays out just make so much sense, though they are not the way most people think about reading. Since '94, I've given a copy of this book to all of my friends when they have their first kid. Enjoy!

A review by Bill W. Hillman, PhD, Professor Emeritus, University of Arizona - Retired psychologist and marriage and family therapist.

We live in a world where we have the potential for unprecedented progress, limitless opportunities for inclusion and mutual respect, and challenging possibilities for respectful dialog to solve the thorny issues that divide us. However, in reality we live in a rude world where we seek personal advantage and the domination of our particular political agenda at the expense of what is best for the whole of society. We seek to maintain our advantage in order to "win", at the expense of others who of necessity must "lose". We seem to have lost the art of cooperation in order to solve our mutual problems.

How are responsible parents to raise respectful kids in such a rude world that has become our 21st century reality. How are these kids to grow up and, as adults, make a difference in this world? How are they to learn quiet compassion for others, rather than becoming part of the domination system or spending their lives fighting the domination system. The authors of this book present practical, down to earth strategies for answering these perplexing questions that challenge parents today.

The authors present the foundational material for the time honored and effective parenting strategy that they and others have written about before. However, they do so with a fresh, creative, and easy to understand style that will encourage, motivate, and stimulate new and experienced parents alike. Parenting is hard work! Growing up in today's world is even harder! There are no easy answers or canned quick fixes. However, the authors present a proven process that can be applied to the specific concerns of individual "real time" families.

The issues and examples presented by the authors are contemporary concerns faced every day by families in our complex society that were largely unheard of only a few years ago. A particular emphasis in the book is the ever increasing problem of violence faced in families, schools, and the total culture of our "rude world" today.

I could not be more enthusiastic in my endorsement of this extremely helpful and readable book by some of the most important and experienced authors in the field of parenting today. The book is a must buy for parents that are serious about teaching their children the power of mutual respect and consideration.

I'm a Physical Therapist Assistant, I use this book to assist me in some of the tiny details of my job, some of which are too tiny to remember in the detail required. It helps keep me on target and allows me to spend more time treating my patients. That's a great thing! I'm not sure how helpful it would be to a non-therapist but it really does the trick for me.

Mark Stevens has the ability to choose titles that instantly catch your attention, and this book is no exception. The contents of the book are just as intriguing as the title. It is full of interesting stories that illustrate the philosophy that's essential to becoming rich.

Understanding a new way of thinking and living. Establishing a new paradigm and mind-set was brilliantly outlined in "Rich Is a Religion." Mark Stevens's assiduous personality and foresight captures the big picture of acquiring true wealth, if one is brutally honest and willing to rethink the word "Wealth."

This book is a Bible!

This book is a bible!

Mark Stevens has created a modern day Bible on the philosophy of money, relationships and the understanding of how money should be handled.
This book will change the way you look, spend and think about money. I truly believe that if you instill the lessons taught to you in this book you will be on the right path to success, both personally and financially.
If half of our country viewed the world of finance (and relationships) that Mark speaks about in this "Bible" we would not be facing the current financial crisis!

Worth reading!

In his usual, "turn-your-belief-upside-down" manner, Mark Stevens' "Rich Is a Religion" examines the meaning of what it is to be rich.

To be truly rich is equated with a set of beliefs, as in a conventional religion; spending money becomes only one less significant factor. The sense of confidence and inner peace associated with having, rather than spending money becomes the keystone of the religion.

Interestingly, while "Your Marketing Sucks," Stevens' sales bible, details how to cause a person to fall in love with your product, so that he/she cannot resist buying it, "Rich Is a Religion" explains the importance of resisting these marketing techniques, of living below your means.

The book is well worth reading; it aims to change a generation of consumers into a generation of "savers." During these difficult economic times, some peace can be found in the concept that what material things we "need" to be happy are actually considerably fewer than we might think.

Great Book

The book is not a "how to get rich quick" guide by any stretch of the imagination. Mark conveys far more important philosophical differences between those who have a healthy attitude toward money and wealth, and those who do not. Saying to yourself "of course I have a healthy attitude toward money - I want all I can get" doesn't cut it. And I think that's why he chose the path of describing wealth creation as a "religion" because it reflects a core belief system that treats money, spending, value, leisure and time all with respect.

"A Rose For Pinkerton," is about a relationship between a cat and a dog. This fun, loving, caring, and adventurous book goes through the feelings Pinkerton and Rose(main characters) have. It shows the consequences of their actions whether they are good or bad. This is a greta book that can teach children about the responsibilities of having a pet.

A Rose for Pinkerton is more fun than a boxful of kittens. The illustrations are lavish and reward careful scrutiny. (A display of "small and quiet pets" includes clams, snails, and fruit.) If you don't have a child, borrow one, and read A Rose for Pinkerton.

A Rose for Pinkerton was one of my very first favorite books when I was a little girl. I can remember looking at all the pictures and simply adoring every detailed scene in it, wondering how a person could be as imaginative in thought as I was. I just want to thank the author so very much for writing a book so full of creativity and life that a little girl fell in love with and is still to this day. Thank you for bringing happiness and light to my life with your book. :>

My two daughters insist on having this book read to them every night! They are young enough that it took a while for them to understand about the "thought bubbles" that show what Rose and Pinkerton are thinking, but they loved the illustrations of Rose as a Great Dane. I think they like Pinkerton because he's big, but he's cuddly and not threatening. It's fun to explore the pages and name all the pets they see. My four-year-old wanted to give this book a six-star rating, she likes it so much!

Eddie, Melody, Howie, and Liza get to go to a motorcycle race. Eddie sees a mototrcycle called the Monster. Howie thinks there is something fishy going on. He thinks that the rider on the Monster is a sea monster. Will the Sea Monster take over Bailey City and have its revenge trying to find her sister? Will she make Eddie's grandma move in with her and die? Or will Eddie's grandma go to her own house with Eddie? If the sea monster moves away then Bailey City will be fine. This book is really good and you should read it to find out what happens in the end.
