My granddaughter is with me during part of the summer. When the books arrived, she was almost six.
We found some interesting things to do. I monitor her tv and computer viewing. So when she got bored and it was not tv time, she would say: get the book! And we always found some fun things to do.

I tripped across this book at my local library and I am here looking for my own copy, as we are limited on how long we keep it. I brutally removed the kids from their TV addiction, and the transition has been difficult on the older ones especially. This book has been my salvation. The prereader like to pick out things by picture, my beginner read has no problem understanding the direction and my toddler and teen get involved too. We have used this to fill the huge void of television and to stave of the "mom I am bored..." routine. This is a small book it fits in my purse and we take it with us everywhere. Breaking the index down by activity type means I can have a Doctor's waiting room idea or a park idea up in running in 2 minutes. The materials list is in the margin for easy access and all the material are everyday every house items, half of which are in my purse any way... This book is a keeper!

This book was recommended in the book Living the Simple Life. I'm so glad I took the time to get it. It's a wonderful resource for busy families looking to spend some quality time together. So turn that TV off and buy this book. Encourages you and your child's imagination and they learn through playing with simple things around the house and the bonus is that by not watching that TV, you've spent memorable time with each other...what could be better?

A discerning discernment
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-08-23
As a Roman Catholic, I have been familiar with the Jesuit tradition of discernment of spirits - based upon St. Ignatius Loyola's "Spiritual Exercises". I have found to my surprise and edification that Arthur Stevens' "Abundant Living for Christians: Making Decisions in Church and Family" builds upon that tradition in a very accessible and practical way. This highly readable book (actually more of a manual) is first and foremost faith-based. Yet it offers its process also for the secular perspective with examples of decision-making in circumstances arising from business and non-religious community.

A major underpinning theme is the exploration of Christian Hope in day to day living and the decisions that may be made in that day. In fact, "Abundant Living" is a manual of hope - a hope that the way in which individuals, families, and communities make decisions can be changed - or transformed - for the better. Whenever possible, practical steps are provided in considerable detail. It is clear that this work is based on experience - both personal and communal. I would recommend this work for those who are willing to consider that they could improve on how their decisions are made.

A refreshing, positive approach to making decisions and identifying hopes that are based on our deepest values. He reminds us to rely on and thank God for supporting us in these important choices in our personal and parish lives. Everyone with a stake in a decision is involved in a respectful, non-competitive way. It can transform the way we relate in community!

A Wonderful Way to Make Decisions

Review Date: 2005-07-10
Art Stevens offers an excellent methodology for decision making which allows a rather reserved person like me to play an important role in all aspects of the process. His "Transformation through Cooperative Discernment" focuses on God's presence in every phase of decision making. The discernment of the hopes of each involved person gives every individual an opportunity to speak and be heard, and the communal cooperation in working through the process to an ending that is pleasing to all are appealing to those whose voices are not always spoken or heard.

While Stevens developed this new way of looking at an old and often difficult process primarily for families, churches and institutions, it can work beautifully for individuals and couples (very small families). He works through this approach to decision making precisely and clearly, step by step, and gives frequent examples to which the lay reader can easily identify.

This book is one that needs to be kept within easy reach, reread from time to time and referred to often. A wonderful new way to use our heartfelt hopes to make decisions, large and small, individual and corporate!

A Better Way of Making Hard Decisions

Review Date: 2005-06-29
Art Stevens' method of decision making through discernment is applicable to institutions large and small, secular as well as sacred, and also to families. It is especially useful in situations where choices are fraught with emotion and conflict. In this little book, Rev. Stevens presents what he calls Transformation through Cooperative Discernment (TCD)as a clear, step-by-step process for resolving conflict and reaching decisions that everyone can feel positive about. He also shows how the process may be used for choosing leaders. The book includes abundant case studies as well as evaluations from people who have used TCD in their church or home life. I recommend it.

A Rare Book

This is one of those books that come along rarely, with new insights and wisdom on the old subject of getting along and living together. Art Stevens' book ought to be required reading for anyone in a ministry of reconciliation-which certainly includes the clergy.

Abundant Living is solidly based on the Gospel. It challenges the familiar mindset of "good guys/bad guys, winners/losers. Stevens takes careful aim at the categorical thinking found in marketplace and Church, and suggests a more effective way to live fulfilled lives.

A guide to what business-to-business customers want from salespeople
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-24
Amazon.com lists nearly half a million books about sales. You get the impression that everyone who ever made a cold call or a sales presentation has written a book about his or her experience. Sales books are often anecdotal, with little or no relevance to the difficult challenges that salespeople actually face. Some present a grab bag of supposedly "can't-lose" sales techniques that sound great on paper but always seem to fall flat during sales calls. Others present compilations of moldy maxims, such as "work smarter, not harder," and "never take `no' for an answer," that make experienced salespeople want to jump off the nearest cliff. This thoughtful and intelligent book by Howard Stevens and Theodore Kinni is a welcome exception. Instead of irrelevant anecdotes or inane aphorisms, it features the results of in-depth surveys of 80,000 business-to-business customers concerning their attitudes about salespeople. It offers an insightful analysis of this singularly informative data, along with recommendations on what salespeople can do to improve their status with customers - and thus increase their own sales. When it comes to the business-to-business salesperson, we cannot recommend this book more highly. Read it to learn precisely what business-to-business customers expect from you, and how you can use this invaluable insider knowledge to close more sales. You'll become the consummate sales professional in both your customers' eyes and your own.

Although I read everything published regarding sales, it is rare that I can heap the kind of praise I am about to heap on Howard Stevens and the HR Chally Group's Achieve Sales Excellence: The 7 Customer Rules for Becoming the New Sales Professional.

Not since Neil Rackham wrote SPIN Selling (in 1987) and Major Account Sales Strategy (in 1988), has anyone used sophisticated research methodology to explain what makes some salespeople much more successful than others (in this case, Chally used 210,000 salespeople and 80,000 customers). Most important, Stevens and the Chally Group actually correlated what a customer said on a survey with their actual buying decisions, therefore, making the information much, much more valid and useful in determining what customer want and expect from salespeople.

The seven rules are:

1. You Must Be Personally Accountable for Our Desired Results
2. You Must Understand Our Business
3. You Must Be on Our Side
4. You Must Bring Us Applications
5. You Must be Easily Accessible
6. You Must Solve Our Problems
7. You Must Be Innovative in Responding to Our Needs

This is a book I wish I had written. It is--bar none--the most important work published in the field of sales in the last 20 years. If you choose not to buy and read this book, I promise you will quickly fall behind those of your competitors who do--it is that important! This book will reshape how you think of yourself as a salesperson, and, if Steven's advice is followed, to greatly improve how we are viewed by our customers.

This book is a must have for any family. I have shared with family and friends many of the poems such as Learning to Read by Frances E.W. Harper page 26. It is so inspiring in times that require a reminder of how important education is and how much sacrifice has been made for us to have it! I enjoy reading it to my 2 year old and 3 year old because I am learning so much at the same time. I think this book is so important to have that I am now including this with my gift for every baby shower!

This book has everything that is traditionally and newly important to the African American. Not only are some of the leaders of literature included, but there are essays from leaders in all fields, science and technology, medicine, law, religion and education. All too often when the world gets its views of who our representatives are, it is none too flattering, I give accolades to Mr. Barboza for changing and challenging that. This book is sad, funny, inspirational and eccletic. One could not ask for a better read.

The book is like a library of our people's trials and tribulations. A collection of poems and stories that will inspire you to do great things. African Americans come from royalty and we can do anything because we are doers and achievers. I wish every "American" could read this book, perhaps African Americans wouldn't be looked down upon. I learned so many things that our people had accomplished that are not taught in school, but should be known and should be printed in text book form.

This book is now being used a bedtime ritual for my children. This means that each night I read a story or poem from the book to them, "about them (African Americans)". About their creativity, their inner strength for survival, their ability to do anything they want to do, about their ancestors that were forced to travel from afar, about their people who invented items that we use today, about their people that broke the color barrier, about their people who walked for freedom, about their people who used the pen to fight their battles, about their people who were forced to feign ignorance in order to survive, about their people who prayed and had faith that God would free them from bondage, about their people who loved each other and encouraged each other, about their people who stepped out there on faith.....

This book is awesome!

This book has inspired me to go back to school which is the least I could do after seeing what my people endured just to give me an opportunity to "step out on faith" "act accordingly" "mind my manners" "represent my hood" "believe in myself" "reach for the stars" and broaden my horizons. For they paved the way through sweat, tears, backbreaking work, picking cotton, washing Missy's clothes, raising Missy's children, eating in the backroom, riding in the back of the bus, being treated as second class citizens.

Thank you, my people past and present.

Thank you Steven Barboza (Editor) for having a vision and seeing it through.

I had an idea for a TV pilot brewing for quite a while. I spent a few months working on the concept. Then I spent another few months writing and rewriting it...trying to make the script the best I could. Then, when I was done I had the realization -- How Am I Going To Sell It? That question has troubled writers since the beginning of the fountain pen. So, I began to read script writing magazines and bought some books on the subject. None were hitting the core or practical enough for me to relate to. Well, that was until I opened Created By.

I have to say that this book showed me "the light at the end of the tunnel." I started reading advice from industry professionals that seemed real. I learned that many of the top TV show creators were once just like me -- a struggling writer with a script and a dream. I got some good solid and priceless advice on how to get my script read. I have just sent my pilot out to some agents!!!!

If you have a script just sitting in your hard drive with no idea how to sell it this book is your resource. Wish there were more books like this out in the marketplace.

A must buy!

I am a television writer who has seen a lot change in this business over the years. Because of the rapid popularity of reality television, it is harder than ever to break into the TV writing game. There are a lot of books out there that claim to show you how to get a job as a sitcom or drama writer. However, in my opinion this book is the best ever written on the subject. You get to hear from the TV show creators themselves how to write a spec script, rewrite a script, get hired on a show, pitch a network, market a show, hire talent, and much more. The author did his homework and rounded up some of the top TV show creators in this business. I found the questions asked and the stories told to be very interesting as well as encouraging. I tip my hat to the author. This is a must buy!

Created By is NOT just another one of those "how to" books that show struggling writer's how to go from crashing on their friends couch in Hollywood, to magically landing into the writers room of a top-rated sitcom. This book offers a lot more than that. It has depth and substance. It is a journey into the minds of some of the greatest television writers of our time.

Don't get me wrong, it surely gives you some great insight on how to make it. But it offers much more. I felt I really connected with the showrunners interviewed. I showed me that no one is an overnight success story. It also demonstrated that everyone has their own journey and road to success. It also taught me about what happens when the business side of the entertainment industry interacts with the creative side. Some of the stories made me laugh and some made me reflect. What a positive book!

I was not sure what I would get out of this book when I originally bought it. But I was pleasantly suprised and very inspired.

To be honest I didn't think I was going to like this book in the beginning it moved kind of slow to me, but I kept reading and got sucked into the story. Sarah, whom the story revolves around, is a woman dogged by tragedy to the point that she's blocked most memories of her childhood and is medicated to the gills. Her shrink suggested that for her to find closure she'd have to make peace with her past, little did she know that dredging up the past would bring a killer back into her life. All the characters are great in this book(though Sean did get on my nerves, very whiny)and as the author starts to build up the profile of the killer any of the men in and around Sarah's life could be the killer. So you are constantly trying to figure out who did it. The book keeps you guessing almost to the end or at least it kept me guessing to the end. Great book!

Reviewed by Tyler R. Tichelaar for Reader Views (5/08)

Amanda Stevens' "The Devil's Footprints" has the reader guessing from the opening pages. While plenty of novels have supernatural events and characters, I anticipated that this story's supernatural events were going to be explained away rationally, but I had no idea how. From the opening chapter when a man finds the devil's footprints in the snow to his front door and then down from his back door, making it appear the devil had walked through his home, I was gripped with the story.

The novel centers around Sarah DeLaune, whose sister Rachel was murdered several years before. Now Sarah is a tattoo artist, trying to get over a broken relationship, when her ex-lover, Sean, a detective, shows up asking her help in solving a murder. Of course, the reader expects these lovers will get back together while tracking the killer, but Sean has married since he broke up with Sarah, and an angry Sarah isn't letting Sean push his way back into her life.

Soon Sean discovers the recent murders appear to have a resemblance to the murder of Sarah's sister. The devil's cloven footprints are again found around the murder victims. Where has the devil, or whoever is playing devil, been hiding all these years, and why has he returned now? Is he out to kill Sarah also? Or does Sarah know something about her sister's murder she is not telling? Perhaps she knows something even she is not aware she knows. Sarah returns to her father's house to seek answers. In the process, she learns family secrets that shock her, and more violence is committed.

Just when I thought I knew where Amanda Stevens was headed with her chilling ending, the plot would take another twist. Although "The Devil's Footprints" might be a bit too grizzly for some readers, and it is a little longer than it needs to be, I found it difficult to put down until I came to the startling conclusion. I would definitely be interested in reading more of Stevens' novels.

You are missing out if you have not read this one.

Having read Ms Steven's first book, I fully expected her second novel to be fully entertaining. Upon finishing this book 5 minutes ago, I can say that I was completely blown away! While her first book had one or two minor flaws to it (mostly with pacing), this book is pretty much perfectly done. The characters are compelling, the plotline is tight & flows well from one scene to the next, & I found myself truly wondering 'whodunit'. While one or two of the elements can be guessed at ahead of time, the main surprises are the ones that take you by surprise.

The story surrounds Sarah DeLaune, a young tattoo artist who is struggling to come to terms with her past as a mysterious killer is murdering young women in a manner similar to that of her dead sister. Mingled into the story is the legend of cloven footprints in the snow, footprints that make their reappearance with the new murders, forcing Sarah to try to remember her haunted past.

Would I recommend this to a friend? Yes! Yes! Yes! Not only would I get the satisfaction of recommending a blossoming author (who I guarantee will become as famous as Patterson, Higgins Clark, or Cornwell), but I'd also get the satisfaction of watching someone tear through a book at the fevered pace with which I went through Stevens's novels.

I love my sleep, and it's rare I will stay up until 2:00 a.m. because I just can't put a book down, but that happened with THE DEVIL'S FOOTPRINTS. Ms. Stevens has written a very tightly plotted, and well-paced book with lots of surprises! She kept me guessing how this story would resolve, right up until the end. I'll be getting a copy of THE DOLLMAKER next.

"A Guide to the Birds of Colombia," by Steven L. Hilty and William L. Brown is mandatory reading for serious field observers. This book treats all of the 1,695 species of resident and migrant birds known to have been reliably recorded in Colombia and on its island posessions of Gorgona and Malpelo prior to 1984.

Moreover, this massive Princeton University Press text (836 pages) includes sixty-nine color and black and white plates by Guy Tudor (one of the most talented living bird illustrators in the world) & others. And before I forget this book includes superb line drawings by Michel Kleinbaum.

I found the sections on Topography, Climate, Vegetation, Habitat Descriptions, and Conservation & National Parks excellent. In addition, the review of Colombian Ornithology and the Range Maps are valuable field observer tools. In conclusion, this is a meticulous text with an expert index that will absolutely fill all the needs of serious field obsevers. Recommended.

There are already some very thorough reviews on this book, but I just had to share how much my 7 year old daughter and I loved this book. Our cat was a rescued feral kitten, so this is an issue close to our hearts. This book does a great job of talking in language my 7 year old could understand, yet I never felt like the issues were "dumbed" down for kids. I look forward to reading more of Anderson's books.

Eleven-year-old star student, Sunita Patel, has longed to share her home with a cat for as long as she can remember. She wants nothing more than to wake up to a furry friend every morning, and bask in the sound of a feline purring. But, alas, her mother, Dr. Patel, refuses to make Sunita's dreams come true. An orthopedist, Dr. Patel is frightened of cats, and doesn't want to share a home with one. Luckily, Sunita receives her fill of feline love by volunteering at Dr. Mac's Place - a veterinary clinic that treats animals of all shapes and sizes. At Dr. Mac's Place, Sunita works alongside four other animal-obsessed friends - Brenna, Maggie, David, and Zoe. While each and every day at Dr. Mac's Place is full of laughter and tears, Sunita finds herself more attached to the case at hand, than any other previous cases she has seen in the past. When Dr. Mac's cat, Socrates, disappears after a cat fight, the vet volunteers begin a search to locate the beloved orange boy, only to stumble upon a place called Cat Land. Cat Land is located in a wooded area of a local neighborhood, where cats of all walks of life have taken up residence in an abandoned boxcar. Noted as a feral cat colony, Sunita is convinced that, with a little love and attention, these cats can live healthy, happy lives in homes with humans. But Cat Land is in danger. Local residents have become fed up with the overpopulation of wild cats, and are frightened of the oft-times aloof creatures. So, taking matters into their own hands, they contact Animal Control, and plan on having each and every one of the animals captured and destroyed. Sunita is devastated to learn this news, and is determined to find justice for these felines. Putting her head together with Dr. Mac, the two come up with a plan to use a widely-effective program called TVSR - Treat, Vaccinate, Spay, and Release. Sunita is thrilled to have the chance to help these homeless animals. But before the program is even well underway, tragedy strikes when Sunita attempts to tame one of the wild cats, and ends up in the hospital. With Sunita sick, she believes that the cats are destined for tragedy, unless she can convince her parents, as well as her neighbors, to have a little compassion, and save these cats before it's too late.

As an animal lover, I have found myself absolutely falling in love with Laure Halse Anderson's VET VOLUNTEERS series. And, after reading FIGHT FOR LIFE, I decided that Sunita was certainly my favorite character out of each of the five volunteers. So I was thrilled to learn that HOMELESS was predominately about her. Anderson has painted a more in-depth picture of Sunita within HOMELESS. While, in FIGHT FOR LIFE, we learned a bit about her character; in this installment, readers have the opportunity to get inside her head, so to speak. We have the chance to see what an intelligent, smart individual she is; and get a close up view of her compassion and determination. The fact that Anderson gives us the opportunity to learn more about Sunita's family life, and learn why she is so crazy about cats only adds to the story. As with FIGHT FOR LIFE, Anderson has targeted a very important issue surrounding animals today: pet overpopulation. However, she also provides readers with facts about feral cats, and gives us the chance to learn more about programs that are being used throughout the country to help feral cats survive and thrive in the wild, without producing more offspring. Anderson continues to shed light on serious issues regarding animals that many authors are too intimidated to touch. And, by providing this information within such an interesting, fun series of books, she gives readers the chance to want to make a difference in the world for animals today, and gives us the information we need to be pro-active in society. The article she provides at the end of the story - told in Dr. J.J. Mackenzie's voice - is interesting, and sheds some light on what cats mean when they purr, knead, and so much more. This article is a fun addition to the tale, and provides an interesting conclusion to the story. A sequel that leaves you purring.

When Sunita finds a group of cats in a neighbborhood, she becomes determined to domesticate them, despite warnings that these cats are not domestic cats but feral cats--cats that have been allowed to grow wild and of which have come into contact with very few humans. Sunita convinces Dr. Mac of the Wild at Heart Clinic to take the cats to fix them, give them shots, and check them for illnesses, since the alternative is that the Animal Control people come and take them and euthanize them. But Sunita learns, finally that you can't domesticate a feral cat after she gets bitten and has to undergo rabies shots herself. But trouble comes when her plan to send the treated cats back to the wild backfires. The nieghbors don't want the cats at all--even if they have been treated so they cannot breed or carry rabies. Was Sunita's plan in vain? Another good book in the Wild At Heart series. I thought that this one was better than the first one.

I think this was one out of the series that was one of the most exciting books. It's about Maggie's friend, Sunita Patel. Sunita loves cats. She works as a vet volunteer at Dr. Mac's clinic. One day Sunita and her friends are walking home from school and they come across an open field with a ton of cats walking around. One of the cats are feral and hurt. They take him to Dr. Mac. The only trouble is, the two kids that were feeding the cats before Sunita got here is that their mother is raving mad about the kids being around feral cats. Sunita must persuade the kids mom that not all cats are bad. Will Sunita change her mind after she is bitten by one? Find out in Homeless.

Many years ago, Jacques Cousteau produced a series of 20 volume under the overall heading "The Ocean World of Jacques Cousteau." That series were so popular they were published and re-published in various editions by different publishers around the world. Whilst my own set may be complete, it is, nevertheless, made up from two separate editions published in Canada and the USA in 1975. That series of books is so important to me that I always carry a note in my wallet about which volumes I require to make up a complete set from either edition.

This book, however, brings together all those 20 volumes into a single book with all the information and photographs completely updated. I well remember where I first saw the book and immediately snapped it up. It was in the airport concourse at Reykjavik when I was in between flights from London to Halifax, Nova Scotia. It was the last copy they had and, at the price I paid, I thought I was going to be arrested by the Icelandic Police for theft!

Over a period of time - and in between other books, I have actually read this huge tome. And it is huge. Measuring 34 x 26cm (13¼ x 10 in), it contains 435 pages of information about every aspect of the Ocean World. If you want to know what made Jacques Cousteau an international name, if you want to know what it is your parents keep going on about whenever they say "I remember when Jacques Cousteau first came on the television and we saw.....", If you want to know what made the late, great Jacques Yves Cousteau Tick - then this is the only book you will even need to buy.

Amazing photographs, incredible information and, as I say, 435 pages on just about every aspect of the Ocean World. For most people, a book of this calibre would be their life's work, but of course, Cousteau moved on to other projects.

5 Stars are not enough for this outstanding work.

This was one of the first books my parents ever bought me which I read all by myself. It is still one of my favorite books and one of the few from my childhood that I have not donated to the local library.

This book was written by Jacques Cousteau, the famous French oceanographer, inventor of numerous diving devices and technologies and maybe one of the most famous scientists of the 20th century. This book is actually a condensation of a series of 20+ books, each of which are devoted to different aspects of the oceans. The original series of books were based on various documentary TV shows produced by, starred in, or otherwise assisted by the author. The original books were very popular in libraries around the world, so the author came out with a condensed version which I am now reviewing.

This book is probably the best source to learn about the oceans, whether you are an adult or child. The text is simple enough for children to understand, but complete and mature in its style, and written like an introductory textbook. The figures and illustrations are gorgeous and in color, and still match those of more recent publications.

Each chapter in this book is short enough to complete in one day, and they cover topics like coral reefs, the N and S Poles, ocean geography, marine mammals, history of life in the ocean, etc... Each chapter begins with a beautiful color illustration on a black page, and is labeled with beautiful names. For example, the chapter on coral reefs is labeled "Pharaohs of the Sea" in reference to their incredible age. My favorite chapter is "The Art of Motion" which begins with a figure of a dolphin jumping out of the water. This chapter's emphasis is on how different life forms in the ocean move about.

Overall, this is one of my favorite books, and a must buy for any science collection.
