Great book about silent movies and other movie stuff!

To tell you the truth, I've never seen a silent movie in my life. But when someone offered me this book, I took a chance at
reading it, thinking it might be interested. Though it may be interesting, it is also very cool. It has some very cool facts,
like the Hollywood sign was originally Hollywoodland, when someone put it up to sell real estates. Today, Brad Pitt or Josh
Hartnett are, what some people call, "sexy." Back then, there was a freaky looking guy who was in the same case. Also, it
shows some signs that would appear on the screen occasionally. It features people that were famous back then, like Charlie
Chaplin and Lon Chaney. Not only is it informative about silent films, but on the bottom of every page, there is a timeline
of historical movie events. So no matter if you silent movies and not movies with sound, you like movies with sound and not
silent movies, or if you like both, this is a great book for you!

Rev. C. does it again! Although this book is a source of encouragement for pastors' wives, it also challenges us to look at
the down sides of belonging to this exclusive club. The topics cover areas that are not mentioned when the spouses meet. If
you are a preacher's wife who wants to face reality, then you need to get this book. Read it now!

Superb description of the riots in Asia with obvious applications to the rest of the world. The associated analysis (while
too heavy in sociological terminology) should be read by everyone concerned with the twin evils of ethnicity and religion.

Loten and David Pendergast have done a superb job
in applying architectural terms to ancient Maya architecture. This reference work has greatly aided Mayanists who are trying
to communicate about ancient architecture by providing them with standard, widely-accepted, and carefully considered definitions
of different elements and motifs.

This historical account of research on a viral model system is educational and fun to read. It illuminates scientific research
and lives of researchers, which should be of interest to scientists and laymen alike. Alot of emphasis is placed on personal
scientific communication and the role government played in shaping post-WWII science.
The review is comprehensively researched and well written. The account highlights the role played by model systems in biological research as well as the impact it had on unexpected areas of bacteriology, genetic basis of heredity, etc.
Great fun to read.

Make your Math-Hater LOVE Math!

My 12 yr old daughter hates math, tries to avoid math, and is discouraged by math. I tried Saxon, math computer programs,
coloring math games and much more. When she started Life of Fred: Beginning Algebra, everything changed. She comes to homeschool
and does her math first thing, by herself, no mom-help needed. Often I hear her laughing out loud at the outlandishly funny
things in this book! The author was a math professor for a couple of decades and is now retired with a mission of making
math fun and memorable for kids, knowing that if they like it and remember it, the job is done! The math is taught in a story
format, with goofy examples and amusing situations. I don't know how she is getting it, but she is learning algebra and loving
it. Highly recommended.

*Nance Dude* grabs you from the first sentence and compels you to pick it up again and again until you have read the last line.
Based on a true story, it tells of a women who killed her own grand-daughter in the mountain country of North Carolina in 1913. You know immediately who did it, the outcome and some of the people involved, but the why's and how's are more compelling than in Capote's *In Cold Blood.*
Still Nance is not a killer story. It is a story of love, compassion, redemption and ultimately the tale of a down-trodden person, who, like *Everyman,* represents all down-trodden people. Nance Dude becomes, through Stanley's skillful handling, a symbol for the black plight, battered women, abused children, those physically and emotionally impoverished.
One cannot help but think of *Cold Mountain* because of the time and the setting, but Nance goes far beyond *Cold Mountain.* In it, Stanley carries you to every human emotion in your psyche. You will laugh, smile, become enraged, cry, feel fear, but most of all you will be constantly surprised and impressed at the buttons Stanley has pushed in you that you thought were hidden.
There is action, suspense, romance, epic tales covering a hundred years, sadness and mystery. What's more Stanley is such a skilled writer that he compresses all of this emotion and time into 253 pages. Writing with the excitement of Grisham, the fine ear for dialog as Goldman, the tenderness of Wolfe and the compassion of Capote, Williams, McCullers and Welty, Stanley will not let you alone, once you have picked him up.
Put this book at the top of your list. But remember, cancel everything on your calendar for the next three days.
(The book is -- as of 12/99 -- back in print from Marblehead Publishing, Raleigh NC.)
