"The revised edition of Land of Enchanters, edited by Bernard Lewis and Stanley Burstein, is well defined by its subtitle: "Egyptian Short Stories from the Earliest Time to the Present Day." The preface is informative, as are the brief introductions to the stories, which describe the travails and triumphs of royals, heroes, spirits and monsters. Typical are "The Story of Dalal," in which a princess wedded to an ogre plans an escape, and "The Island of the Serpent," wherein a shipwrecked sailor is aided by a giant serpent "plated with gold." Sales of this slim volume could get a boost if it is assigned to high schoolers and undergraduates." ~ From Publishers Weekly

A Great Idea

I noticed as I read scholarly works on the New Testment (especially dealing with Koine Greek), I would see the same names and essays appear. Porter has compiled the most important essays and journal articles on the language of the New Testament. Funny thing is, I have photocopies of many of these articles in my library. I hope to acquire a copy so I can have them in a handy volume. A great reference source, kudos to Porter.

The Laughing Vet, by Stanley C. Tanner DVM MRCVS, is a veritable delight of veterinary vignettes and unforgettable memoirs. Penned masterfully by an extraordinary traveling animal doctor, the reader is taken on a spellbinding, snapshot journey from surgery to house calls, through time and across continents. This is a surprisingly entertaining book, written through the eyes of an entrepreneur who established Europe's very first laundromat, and went on to successfully run one of the UK's largest laundromat groups. This is a must for anybody with an interest in social history, providing a thoughtful insight into the massive changes in society in the post-war period.

I love audio study aids
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-22
I just don't like class instruction because of class getting sidetracked by other students questions (which often have little to do with the subject) and instructors who just have no idea how to organize a difficult subject. I buy audio classes every chance I get and all have been extremely helpful. Will & Trusts is no exception. You get a 4 credit class condensed into 6 hours of uninterupted lecture whenever you are ready to listen to it. Additionally, this one has by far the longest accompanying handout I have seen - 52 pages. However, the handout is based on the cd's and the lecturer is using the same handout as his outline for the lecture! They work together perfect. I have a full version of Acrobat so I can type my notes into the PDF handout while listening, but you could just as well print off the handout and write any notes on it. Regardless, the guy did a better job of explaining the material than my instructor did! I was happy with the cd's and the grade I got because of them.

Learning Disabilities Explained is just what the doctor ordered. This volume brings a new level of understanding to a very complex problem.A clear presentation of the major problems, with sources of help and answers to some of the more common questions are provided. While the material is presented in sufficient depth to satisfy the needs of professionals in the field, it is written in a manner which addresses the needs of parents for "plain english" explanations.

Plight of a theory
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-05-15
Leaving Marxism? For what, one thinks? Market mania ideology? One problem is that capitalist ideology has become crypto-Marxist in its 'stage of history' inevibility thinking about the market order. So one should leave all of it, no? Another Fukuyama clone? One could exit 'theory' back to the dynamics of the early Marx, whose acute insights have outlasted the fiasco of the Second Internationale junk science.
This is a well-done set of case studies of three passages through and from Marxism, (Henri) de Man, Horkheimer, and Kowalkolsky of 'Main Currents' fame, and as always the critic and reverse ideologist has details not found elsewhere. One of the reasons for the failure of Marxism lay in the inability of its proponents to remember their own history, with the resulting loss of realism. It is unnerving to think that all or most of the criticisms of theory dated from very early on, almost from the 1890's.
The book also has a chapter on the insidious and perversely effective influence of Nietzsche on the beginnings of the early demise, and one discovers in some surprise the connection of this to revisionism, Lenin's tract on the Machists, to say nothing of Mussolini and Sorel. We cannot blame that aspect on Marx. It is sad to watch this sordid aspect of Nietzsche, no longer fashionably seen as the reactionary he was, by the fashionable postmode devotees who can't seem to grasp the problem here.
It is good to leave Marxism in short order, so as to be able to see the real critique of ideology with which the subject began, before its critics stole the accusation, and reversed the charges.

creating a new political formation
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-21
In a breathtaking Historical reconstruction of where the U.S. left has been and is now, Stanley Aronowitz provocatively and concretely proposes a new political formation that can confront the monolithic electoral party system and its array of special interests and takes to task the reformist tendencies of postmodern politics which usually manifest as single issue actions. The labor unions are also critiqued as becoming "sweethearts" to business, We are invited to rethink the totality of involvements from the notion of everyday praxis, historical agency, historical bloc in fresh radical terms and to consider real alternatives to market capitalism , first by rethinking our relationship to nature and to labor. Aronowitz has managed to uniquely synthesize the best of Lenin's, Luxemburg's,Pannekoek's,and Gramsci's thinking about political organization and has provided the left with a new starting point both for discussion and action. In a concluding chapter , Aronowitz critically engages three new utopian proposals and gives a harsh indictment of the Rawlsian political liberalism that dominates the landscape of contemporary political theory.

This book, in my view, is a must read for anyone interested in political theory, practical philosophy, radical praxis today, and the organizational problems facing the left today. Controversial, yet creatively provocative this work will stimulate much debate among those wanting substantive transformation in our political future.
