This is the best bible study I have done so far in my christian life. Usually I start out strong and then wane, but I kept at this - all on my own even - and have really grown from it. Each chapter has great thoughts to think about - good scripture references. At the end of every chapter are thoughtful questions: 5 questions for each of the 5 days. There are 10 chapters in all:
1. The power behind self-control
2. Emotional control
3. Anger Control
4. Controlling fear and anxiety
5. Controlling our thoughts
6. Controlling the tounge
7. Controlling the body
8. Controlling habits
9. Controlling our time
10. Controlling God's treasure

Here is one of my favorite quotes from her chapter on Controlling habits:
"Each time we choose to take control of our habits instead of allowing our habits to control us, we remove a link from the chains that bind us. Remove enough chains, and we walk away free"
Or, from the Power Behind Self Control:
"If it were possible for us to control ourselves by ourselves, there would be no need for the Holy Spirit"
And from somewhere I can't remember:
"Are my desires so strong that I am willing to ignore God's commands in order to gain a percieved reward?"
I plan on ordering this book again!

Here it is Full Metal Jacket fans, the screenplay from your favorite Vietnam movie. Based on Gustav Hasford's novel, The Short-Timers, this screenplay was written by Hasford, Michael Herr (author of Dispatches and who provides the foreward), and the movie's director - Stanley Kubrick. If you've ever read The Short-Timers, you'll notice that some of the dialogue was lifted verbatim (not that that's a bad thing, mind you). The best thing about this book (besides being an oversized trade paperback) are the 140+ color pictures from the film. No tame behind the scenes shoots here, they're all from the actual movie (the whole movie, not just from a few key scenes). Having just read The Phantom Blooper (Hasford's 1990 follow-up to The Short-Timers), I just had to pull this out again. Semper Fi.

The author Stanley Roberts calls himself the Blackjack Guru of the 80's. gu·ru ( A teacher and guide in spiritual and philosophical matters. A trusted counselor and adviser; a mentor. A recognized leader in a field: the guru of high finance. An acknowledged and influential advocate, as of a movement or idea: This description is totally accurate. A contemporary and a contributor to the founding fathers of Blackjack. Stanley Roberts writes to the beginning Blackjack Player and shows them how to advance through the levels of play needed to become an expert Player. Stanley does this with a minimum of "hype" for any particular system which is so evident in many other Blackjack books. Stanley starts with the development of Blackjack theory and methodology for beating the game. He expalains about the affect of casino rules on the house advantage over the player using noted author Lance Humble as his expert. Stanley explains the use of Basic Strategy as well as any other author. He even goes on with the help of Julian Braun to give the extremely rare and vital information on Double Exposure and Home Game basic strategy. Arnold "the Bishop" Snyder contributes a chapter on the casino conditions and other topics. Jerry Patterson contributes a chapter on a topic that became the next area of attack against the casino, the order of the cards and how it is affected by the shuffle procedure. After all the mathematics of the strategy and count systems had been developed then teams came into play. Ken Uston writes two of the most interesting chapters on team play and getting Barred. All areas of play are discussed including cheating, bankroll management and a plan for progressing up the ranks to an advanced player. This is a terrific for a beginner. There is no advanced strategy for Sale. But, it is written by a true visionary in the gaming world at a time when Blackjack was a Main course on the casino platter.

Nobody is better qualified to articulate the merits of Mohandas Gandhi than E. Stanley Jones. First, Jones was a close friend of Gandhi's for many years, and second, Jones was a humble enough westernized Christian to see that the brightest shining light of his time was an eastern Hindu.

Although this book is only 160 pages, it is dynamic enough for Martin Luther King Jr. to consider it the best book on Gandhi ever written. I would only add that this book cannot be simply read and understood, it demands to be demonstrated in the life of the reader

This book gives a vivid image of the Roman gardens. It explores the much unknown archeology of agriculture. The beautiful photographs illustrate the precision and wonder of Roman gardening, or the remains of it. I highly recomend this book to anyone interested in Pompeii or just the average run of the mill gardener.

This book provides an excellent overview of world religions and how they relate to Christian thought. Fleming provides an excellent resource for responding to the need of Christians to be witnesses of Christ to all people.

This book is reminiscent of Walter Martin's 'Kingdom of the Cults' but is in an easier to read format.

This book has suitable depth and coverage, great for anyone that feels that Lewin's GENES is too lengthy. It has excellent reference lists for one who wants to know more. It has clear diagrams and was written elegantly. However it is not updated frequently.

"If you want to understand psychoanalysis this is the book you read first.

"Here is Freud's one complete presentation of the whole science which he founded. These 28 lectures to laymen set forth the fundamental theories upon which all modern psycholanalysis is based. Yet they are simple, almost conversational in tone. They sum up the results of a lifetime of devoted, painstaking research.

"Frued describes with a startling frankness the methods and results of pychoanalysis and also its difficulties and limitations-as only a master and originator of a new school of thought could do.

"Today Frued is generally recognized as one of the two or three great creative minds of the cenetury. It is not necessary to accept his theories in their entirety to recogfnize the fact that Freud's work has profoundly influenced the thinking of our time."
