The Old Man and The Sea is a wonderful novel that opens our eyes to nature. The underlying theme of this book is that man and nature are equal, and should be treated as an equal. This novel is about an old fisherman who struggles with a gigantic fish; not to be sucessful, but for pride. He clearly represents a Hemingway Hero in all senses of the word, including that he is flawed. Ernest Hemingway has once again made his point through wonderful literature and I would congratulate him on this work of art should he be living

COMPILATION OF BECKER'S BEST WORKS
Helpful Votes: 15 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 2004-08-13
This is a compilation of Becker's most significant articles. Becker is one fo the most brilliant economists in the 20th century, taking the tools of economic analysis to other social sciences, especially sociology.

The articles have varied topics, including:
- Economic analysis of marriage
- Economic analysis of family size
- Economic justification for altruism
- Economic analysis of restaurant pricing patterns
- Economic analysis of discrimination
- Economic analysis of crime

It is a bit academic, since these are the original article he wrote for academic journals, but they are understandable since it is mostly concepts and not too many equations (though there are some). For the absolute beginner, this may be too advanced, so I would recommend The Economics of Life by Becker as well. If you have some knowledge of economics, I believe this would be a great choice. It shows how the rationality acquired in economics is applicable elsewhere, almost everywhere.

As an earth and space science student teacher, I look for material that I can pass off to my class of middle school students. I use this text to augment THEIR text and my lesson plans. This book is a must for any type of earth science enthusiast. The articles and chapters are easily read and understood, and the diagrams are works of art. BRAVO!

I bought the book for Kirk Schneider's article but found that this was a good book to provide a basis as well as references for other therapies. Kirk's new book is out and you can buy it on Amazon as well if you want to know more about existential humanistic psychology

Delves way beyond the usual 'protect your assets' focus
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-13
There are plenty of books on financial planning and savvy: what makes Stanley D. Neeleman, et.al.'s Estate Planning For The Healthy Wealthy Family special is its focus on values-based estate planning which goes beyond the usual focus on how to pass wealth tax-free to future generations. The concern here is that money passed on be used wisely: a new form of values-based planning which encourages wisdom, character growth, and even non-material values. Professor Neeleman has studied law at Brigham Young University and has extensive practical experience in tax planning, while associate co-author Carla B. Garrity Ph.D is a child psychologist and Mitchell A. Baris, Ph.D. is a family psychologist. The unusual blend of disciplines means Estate Planning For The Healthy Wealthy Family delves way beyond the usual 'protect your assets' focus.

A Work of Diverse and Exceptional Scholarship
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-06-13
This is a work that focuses on ethical issues in a narrow but important area of behavioral and clinical science: substance misuse. It draws on a wide range of talented scholars from areas as diverse as law, medicine, psychology, and social work to address ethical issues in substance misuser treatment, research, and public policy. The topics are not obtuse but rather critical to how individuals with substance use disorders are treated or mistreated in the clinical, legal, and research setting. This is not a work for those whose interest in the ethics of this subject is only casual or whose wiliness to devote study and effort to the subject is minimal. However, for those who work in this area as clinicians, researchers, teachers, public safety personnel, or public policy makers the work is central and indispensable.

Ethnicities and Nations
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-18
Excerpt from book's flyleaf:

"Ethnicities and Nations examines the factors behind ethnic strife that is prevalent in the social and political life of so many countries of the Third World today. Among industrial nations such conflicts are of course not unknown: one need only mention, in Europe, the Corsicans and the Bretons, the Irish, the Basque and the Catalan, the South Tyrolese, the Armenians etc., and in North America the Indians, the Blacks, the Puerto Ricans and the Mexicans, to appreciate the equally enduring relevance of the ethnic theme in the "developed" modern world.

The essays in this volume bring together and compare similar ethnic struggles in areas where, over the last one hundred and fifty years, a great number of postcolonial nation-states have been created or revived, based on old European - colonialist - models. Using historical and anthropological material, they explore the specifics of ethnic unrest in political bodies which after embracing Western post-Enlightenment ideologies continued to rely heavily on their own non-European traditions, modes of thought and environments as the source of their national identity"

A Scientific Look at Ageing
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-26
A fascinating book on how our bodies are evolving towards a longer life. This book ignores the problems that might kill us before our time. This includes war, accidents, infectious disease, famine, etc. Instead it looks at what happens to our bodies as we age. Is there a 'death gene' that starts shutting our bodily systems down at some age? How does heredity play a part?

This book is a popular summary of recent research into the end of life. It looks at the statistics showing that we are living longer and then begins to look at ways to account for our longer lives.

For some evidence of how this is affecting our world, consider that when social security was passed in 1935, at that time the median life expectancy in the US was 54 for women and 46 for men. Now it is in the seventies. What happens medically, socially, institutionality if life expectancy extends to 150 years or perhaps 300?
