The Perfect Launching Pad for a Theory of Political Deviance in the American Political System
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-10-11

Other reviewers have complained that the book lacks theoretical coherence and substance, and while I cannot disagree with this criticism altogether, it is important to point out that the book is first and foremost, a college level textbook. Thus, although it is not theoretically tidy, I am inclined to give the author the benefit of the doubt. In my view, it must be seen as much a didactic tool as an independent attempt to advance a fresh theory of Elite Deviance.

Even without positing a fully formed theory, this book is undoubtedly filling a gap that sorely needs filling. The only other books that come close to doing so is Peter Dale Scott's "Deep Politics and the JFK assassination," and much of the writings linking the drug trade to the CIA, and through the CIA to high level U.S. politicians. And here I have in mind such works as Gary Webb's "Dark Alliance;" Terry Reed's "Compromise," and Alfred McCoy's, "The Politics of Heroin in Southeast Asia," among many others.

The next conceptual level up from this genre and Simon's book is quite a large leap. Arguably one would have to ascend to something on the order of Jürgen Habermas' et. al., theories of corruption based on a framework of communicative action. In addition to being quite a leap from undergraduate political science and sociology, it would also require a change in focus to criminal intent and the sociology and psychology of crime - not exactly the center of gravity of elite deviance.

The beauty of the present volume is that it does catalogue rather carefully the many instances of elite corruption that remain just below the waterline of American society. This collation is turned into a taxonomy of patterns and robust chunks that hint strongly towards a complete theory of elite deviance. For me that is enough.

In the same vein as Scott's Deep Politics, Simon's treatment here gravitated towards an all but pregnant "pre-theory" of elite deviance based on the overwhelming coherence of the various strains of empirical evidence that this book so carefully collates into meaningful patterns. Constructing a suitable theory from the welter of data pointing to elite deviance and corruption is an exercise that any good college professor would leave as an exercise for his industrious students.

I believe Professor Simon has done just that: He has left this book as a launching pad for industrious students to peek over the horizon to see all the many theoretical possibilities. It is a work in progress and one of the finest of this genre. A final theory of elite deviance in the American political system would make a fine dissertation topic for one of Simon's students.

If you have an ERISA problem and don't know where to start..

Ok. I already feel odd writing a review of this book. The anticipated audience is incredibly narrow and if you found this review, you probably know what you are looking for. However, I think this is one of the greatest books. As a law student who is planning on specializing in ERISA, this book has been an invaluable resource to me. It is the first place I turn when I have an ERISA question to research. It won't provide all the answers but puts a very complex statute into perspective. It would also benefit the non-lawyer who might be involved in benefits.

THE Essential Resource on Musical Theatre History
Helpful Votes: 19 out of 19 total.

This book is a must-have for people who work in, study, or love the musical theatre. When did a particular musical open? Who wrote it, and what else did he/she work on? What was the chronology of a performer or director's stage career? Were there revivals, London productions, tours? Who starred in a given production? While there are many books that can help find such information, no other book does it as efficiently. As a Broadway producer's assistant and as a life-long theatre buff, I have found this one-volume Encyclopedia a vital source of information. While all of Stanley Green's books are informative and entertaining, this is the one I turn to when I need the facts or figures fast. If musical theatre trivia is your bag, this is one of the motherlodes --I recommend it highly!

This video presents us with some very interesting information about Oil being available but we're simply not allowed to tap into it.

Aside from the low production value, the facts presented by Mr. Williams are relevant and this Video should not be missed. I know people that work at the IMF and World Bank, and these facts are correct, just wiki it yourself and see.

I am glad to have this video now in my library, I am sure it will disappear along with the Energy Non-Crisis book, which is very hard to find [at a decent price].

Unique & fascinating life story & sex manual
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-09
Quite an amazing book, about a fascinating life-story. Easy to read, a page-turner every time I pick it up.
The author decided to become a celibate yogi in his 30's, after 20 years with an travelling orchestra with lots of sex and women in every city. When he was told that Karezza was better than celibacy for a spiritual life, he decided to try Karezza instead of Brahmacharya.
Surprisingly, with Karezza, not only did he find that he could reach higher spiritual levels than ever before, he also found that women loved this kind of sex, and couldn't get enough. He calculates that he now spent a hundred times more time having sex, compared to before. And when teaching patients about Karezza, he saw that their marriages quickly improved, and couples fell in love again, it put an end to extra-marital affairs and pending divorces. Today, after 50 years of teaching an energy-enhanced version called Energy-Karezza, he says we ought to teach every young person about the higher levels of sex.
Karezza is the stage inbetween Tantra and standard sex, and can take many different forms. Most existing literature on Karezza is old and stale. This book is quite fun & instructive. Bass says that since his goal was optimal spiritual bliss, he pushed further and further, experimenting, teaching, incorporating Tao, Tantra, etc. If he had been interested in sex only, he might have been satisfied at a lower level.
With this book Bass summarizes his experiences and improvements of Energy-Karezza. He says that because of the added energy, it was possible to reach the highest levels of both sexual pleasure and spiritual bliss. With Karezza the sex-session may last for 1/2 hour to one hour. With Energy-Karezza instead for hours, every day, alternating between high and low states, with different movements, with high states of bliss.
The account of the amazing psychology that results from hours of pleasure & exercise, and from "being in the now", is interesting. The manual is detailed. Right now Amazon doesn't show any excerpts from the book, but at energykarezza.com it is possible to read the first chapters.
Highly recommended book, it has completely changed my understanding of sex.

Review Date: 2007-09-21
This vivid portrait of an exuberant era peopled by forceful and colorful personalities is a social and political history of the eighteenth century that is a happy blend of information and entertaining illustrations. It not only provides solid historical data and analyses of this very significant century but also characterizes the period by considering the individuals who left their mark on politics, religion, and the arts. It depicts, furthur, the various classes of society, the fashions, the entertainments, and the social institutions of the time. Integrated into the substance of the book are almost three hundred contemporary engravings, paintings, drawings, reproductions of letters, newspaper advertisements, and other illustrations, which give visual testimony to the flavor and the history of this vigorous period in England.

Albert Wifstrand's writings are full of trenchant observations. Thankfully the effort was undertaken to translate Wifstrand's "greatest hits" into English. He made several important contributions to the current understanding of the language of the New Testament. Wifstrand was a highly independent thinker, you will not find copious footnotes of indebtedness in his writings. There is difficulty in summarizing this work as the essays are many and varied. Arguably his most important contributions lay in the areas of the Lukan writings and the Pastorals. I noticed many of his observations recently in Lars Rydbeck's essay on the language of the New Testament in the Religion in Geschichte und Gegenwart. Wifstrand is also eulogized by a former a student in this volume. This work is part of the series entitled the Wissenschaftliche Untersuchungen zum Neuen Testament in which the volumes are beautifully made. The binding, paper and print quality are top notch, which helps to justify the cost.
