Awesome Insight into Mosconi

Outstanding book that gives you a look at one of the greatest champions of pool of all time. Very well written with Stanley Cohen (written many sports books). Cohen uses an unusal writing style, letting Mosconi speak in his own words and then uses seperate interviews or other historical research to add to his story.

Very well written and an easy read.

A fun and informative look at one of pool's greatest players

Willie's Game chronicles the life of Willie Mosconi, one of the greatest pool players in the history of the game. That in itself makes it a necessary edition to a billiard enthusiast's bookcase, but those interested in sports, competition, and prodigies will enjoy it too.

From learning to play by hitting potatoes around on the pool table, to winning tournaments for big money, to setting the world record for the most balls run (526), Mosconi did it all. He talks a lot in his autobiography about what makes a good player, and about the difference between an apt technician and a champion.

As you'd expect, the personalities are colorful, especially when set against the background of early twentieth century America. Mosconi doesn't mince words about his impressions of and experiences with other pool notables. There's a lot of valuable pool history and anecdotes here.

An outstanding companion to a Peterson field guide
Helpful Votes: 15 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 1999-03-25
This book is an ideal companion to a field guide to Eastern birds. Primarily designed as a reference guide (it contains no pictures, descriptions, or field marks) it contains a wealth of information on the likelihood of finding a particular species by county and time of year in Wisconsin. Based on at least 15 years of birding reports, the book is organized in standard order of species with one bird species per page. Each page contains the probability of spotting the species somewhere in the state in a given year, a map of the frequency of reports by county, a chart of the reporting frequency by week for the year, and a trend line by year of the total relative number of reports. I would recommend the guide primarily to the intermediate or advanced birder who is knowledgable about each bird species and their likely habitats already, but needs to know what is likely to be found in a given part of the state.

IMHO, this book is a template of how every state or regional guide should be designed.

I use it regularly

Any birder is familiar with the format that even the best guides use to convey the likelihood over time of finding a given species in a particular location. Because of the scope of those guides, they are limited to conveying the timing to seasons and the locations to regions.

This book tells the reader exactly when specific bird species are generally found in specific counties of the state. A field guide will tell you that a certain bird migrates through the state in the spring, but some birds migrate in March, and some in June. This book will also tell you how populous the bird is (ie. how rare it is). You can also see the general movements of resident birds in the state over seasons.

I live in Wisconsin, so I use this book all the time. I have been frustrated trying to find similar information for states that I visit regularly. It is an invaluable resource for concentrating observation and understanding the animals being studied.

Hello, my names Serguy, I am 12 years old, I Belif vegetarianism was not simply a dietary choice, but had wider implications in view of the social/symbolic power associated with meat: ‘To change one’s diet is to throw into doubt the relationship between gods, men and beasts upon which the whole politico-religious system of the city rests... To abstain from eating meat in the city-state is a highly subversive act. I enjoyed the book alot.

One of the better 68000 programming books

Review Date: 2006-06-23
In my early teens, when looking around for a good 68000 assembly language book I found this to be the best of all the books I looked at. The style of writing makes this a very readable tome (relative to most data books you see on machine languages). The first few chapters of the book describe the processor architecture, addressing modes, and instruction set quite clearly. Unlike the dry data manuals you you often get from processor manufacturers, the authors spend the rest of the book describing coding techniques on the 68000 by using the building of a full-screen text editor as an example project. The last few chapters describe the I/O interfaces, bit-mapped graphics, data management and debugging. The appendices have a complete code listing for the text editor, math routines, instruction format summary and execution times.

At the time I had been writing 6502 code and this book made moving to the more advanced 68000 (wow, you mean we have multiply instructions!) very easy.

A landmark work of cultural anthropology, Lane's study of Egyptian society has never been out of print since it was first issued in 1836. The definitive fifth edition of 1860, the basis of this re-issue, was the result of a quarter-century of Lane's corrections, reconsid-erations and additions and includes 131 illustrations by Lane, most made with the aid of a camera lucida. Lane (1801-1876) first traveled to Egypt in 1825, inspired by the dis-coveries made by Belzoni and others in the Valley of the Kings, but it was contempo-rary life that captured his imagination. He immersed himself in the culture, learning its language and adopting its way of life. The results were extraordinary: Out of his ex-periences came not only this work, but translations of The Thousand and One Nights, Se-lections from the Qur'an, and the seminal Arabic-English Lexicon. Composed at a time of increased western interest in and contact with Egypt, but before the forces of moderni-zation transformed the country, Manners and Customs is renowned for its comprehen-sive scope, detail and perceptiveness on such topics as Islamic laws and government, festivals, death and funeral rites, marriage, music, dancing, magic and alchemy, public baths and bargaining. Lane's work retains its power to charm and amaze-much like Egypt itself.

I've read a lot of books on personal development and there were some gems in this one that I'd never even considered before! Mr. Bronstein's book is an excellent read and I'd recommend it to anyone on the path to success.

If you are new to engineering mathematics this is the book for you. Clear and strait forward introduction to linear algebra, vector calculus, differential equations, laplace transforms, numerical analysis and complex variables. The book has been out of print for 20 years so do not look for up to date references to the PC. Get a copy while they are still available.
