The battle between denial and deception and photo interpretation

To Fool A Glass Eye is an excellent study on the use of denial and deception during world war II and the photo interpreters who attempted to use photographic imagery to gain intelligence and break through the mask of camoflauge. Stanley does a great job in including dozens of wartime recon photos, and shows exactly how the camoflauge worked or did not work, and how successful the intelligence analysts were. This is not a technical treatise or a historical study per se, rather it is a compilation of fascinating photographs and of the world of imagery. Excellent book for the price.

In World War Two, camouflage became an extremely important part of the military tool kit. This book is a first-class foray into the subject with numerous photographs to illustrate the authors points. Separate chapters on aircraft, field facilities, warships, etc. cover the range of applications. Compared to the simple treatments that are available elsewhere (in this price range), this book is by far the best. Again, great photographic examples.

Dr. Stanley has written an excellent title encouraging readers to pursue and realize the deep peace that comes only from God.

The book is about 135 pages long and contains 31 devotions centering on some aspect on God's peace. Each chapter contains a relevant prayer at the end encouraging the reader to reflect more on what has been read.

Read and enjoy. Highly recommended!

Compared to other text books of this nature dealing with the same scientific discipline, Manahan captures the reader's attention by dealing with several environmental focal points from and organic, toxicological, and environmental chemistry standpoint.

Based on its uniqueness and seemingly open paths for comprehension, this textbook is a must for those desiring further knowledge in the area of toxicological chemistry with a detailed spectrum of organic and environmental chemistry with a keen mix of environmental toxicology.

In short one would soon surmise this textbook is nothing short of academically remarkable and a credit to the fields of environmental toxicology, organic chemistry, and environmental chemistry. It is a must read science text for those in the environmental and chemistry fields whether academic, industrial, or government.

The Counter Cultural 10 Commandments

Review Date: 2000-03-28
The Ten Commandments that a judge from Alabama fought to hang on the wall were not the commandments of God that Christians serve. Those same commandments are not a general call for morality that can save the pluralistic society of the United States of America. According to the authors, these commandments must be understood within the context of the Christian community. This work declares the Ten Commandments to be the way that the worshiping church relates to God and each other. Hauerwas and Willimon seek to explain the commandments from that context so that they may be known "perfectly."

Only the worshiping church is able to understand the Ten Commandments. They are not, as explained by the authors, "timeless ethical principles that are applicable to all Americans." This work reclaims another part of the church's heritage necessary for life as resident aliens. Clearly, Hauerwas and Willimon are working within and driving the trend toward understanding the church as a community. Their attack on American individualism serves to push the church to understanding itself as a holy people. These holy people are the possession of the "God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and the God of Jesus Christ."

The Truth about God is a striking look at the Ten Commandments. This work exposes the ways that our society is so sinful that the institution of the Church is the only hope for Christians to survive and obey God. Only within this context are the people of God able to truly obey his words to us. Despite the informal tone of some sections of the book, it strikes deeply in exposing our sinfulness and the churches need for grace. Hauerwas and Willimon teach at Duke University in Durham North Carolina. Hauerwas serves as the professor of Theological Ethics, and Willimon serves as the Dean of the Chapel and professor of Christian Ministry.

I bought this book back in 1997, approximately 2 1/2 years before I came out to my family/friends. I found this book to be very insightful, because it helped me to understand a lot of my own frustrations about why my life phases were in random order, rather than life "stages" in chronological order, as is prescription for a "heterosexual lifestyle".

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is having problems or issues getting to know themselves or reconciling their seemingly haphazard gay existence (for lack of a better phrase).

This is simply the best book I've ever read about the developmental stages of a gay man's life. Essential reading for anyone who is gay or cares about anyone who is gay. It helps you understand, for example, the particular developmental challenges faced by gay men today when the country's president and most political leaders defile gay men and do so knowing there's political advantage in such posturing.

Great for Collectors of Twisted Children's Literature
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-04
I think every doctor or dentist's office had this collection of books in the 70's (although they seemed to only have volume one - maybe volume one was free and you had to buy the rest). I remember being totally creeped out by that story, "Jesus Understood", about a dying kid whose arm is propped up so that Jesus will find him when he dies. The last line went something like "Tommy was dead, but Jesus had understood." [shudder] Great bedtime stuff! I have found several online references to this story, written by people who, as children, were afraid to sleep with their arms exposed after reading or hearing that story. The stories covered absolutely everything from your garden-variety sins (gluttony, being mean to your brother, laziness) to more serious stuff (anti-semitism, racism). One story in particular I will never forget is the one where the Jewish girl comes home after being taunted for being a Jew. The little rhyme the kids were saying to her has never escaped my memory - it went "Marcia is a Jew/and she is a kike/and we don't like you/and we'll steal your bike". The girl asks "What is a Jew? What is a kike?" and her mother has to explain it all. I was not a particularly religious child and remember finding some of the stories eerie. The were so foreign to my own experiences, but intriguing too, it was like peeking into Pleasantville. Or Stepford. Nevertheless, as a collector of twisted children's literature, I am picking up the set so I can read and laugh about the stories with my kids.

Wonderful memories of childhood

My mother came from a family of five siblings, and each child received one volume from this series. Over the years, she received several other volumes so that my sisters and I could read them all. I have more fond memories from reading this series than I do probably any other books as a child, and I was one voracious (still am!) reader!
Each story in these books has a particular lesson, and if one is not a Christian or was not raised in a Christian home, some of the ideas woud seem foreign. That is to be expected.
I think my all-time favorite story was the story about a little girl learning about a jewelry box full of precious jewels that she could receive. The lesson was that as a Christian, learning to be like Jesus would create more beauty on the inside than any valuable jewels could create on the outside. There were pictures of the jewels, and I remember getting so excited thinking about my character being as beautiful as those gems (I have a fondness for the beauty of jewelry even today :)
So, these stories are sweet, some of them seem a bit more harsh, but they must be considered in the time they were written. During the fifties, people had just come out of times of war, hardship, death, tragedy beyond what many of us realize today, and these stories reflect rising above that pain and finding joy in Someone who loves us all.
Of course, each story is not necessarily a Sunday School lesson, either. Another favorite of mine was the story of "Just a Minute Janet". A little girl could not seem to figure out that she should respond when her mother called her, not ignore her and call out "Just a minute, Mama." Finally, her mother began to give the child that answer each time the child called, and before too long, the child quickly realized that she didn't like getting that answer any more than her mother did. Problem solved; lesson learned. For anyone who has ever dealt with children, I think there is much humor here for the adult, as well as a lesson to be learned for the child.
All said and done, these stories are fabulous and deserve much credit.

Incredibly helpful tool

This book is a very useful tool for owners in terms of helping them understand a dog's mind. The book is incredibly detailed and extensively describes the stages in a dog's psychological development. It also has sections on handling problems as well as training. The best thing about this book is it gives concrete step by step instructions on training and commands that are easy to understand and follow. It also has an extensive section on interpreting body language and barks. I've read Cesar Milan's books and I find them useless because they're too abstract. They're more a testimonial to his skills than useful information for the average owner. This book is much more informative and helpful.

Valuable Addition to Dog Literature

Having much appreciated other dog books by Stanley Coren, PhD--and having a new dog myself now--I had hopes this book would be worthwhile when I ordered it. I just finished reading it last night, and it is very, very good.

One thing that impresses me in the book is that the reader isn't just told what to do to handle the dog, but is also told why that is what to do. Another thing I like is the authors recognized that all dog owners do not want the same details in lifestyle with their dogs, and presented various options on safe ways to handle things.

The "for Dummies" series includes some duds and some amazing books that are full of extremely valuable details. This is one of the most valuable. Whether you are a new dog owner or an experienced one, you are sure to encounter something new to you and helpful in this book.

The book also does a good job of telling owners when to get in-person, professional help with their dogs. This is vital. There are times when help simply cannot be communicated for the specific problem via the Internet or the telephone. And dogs are here and now beings. Sometimes the expert has to see the situation in person to diagnose the problem.

My young Standard Poodle named Worthy will surely benefit from this book. And so will I.

Vaccines: Expert Consult (VACCINES (PLOTKIN/ORENSTEIN))
I had the opportunity to review 3 of the chapters online before getting my own copy, and I recommend it highly for medical school/hospital libraries, and for ID/public health workers who are involved in vaccine projects or research. For example chapter 17 on J-E vaccine is thoroughly researched and current, and it is great to have details of all vaccines types and where they are used in one easy-to retrieve resource. The online/Cd is also a bonus, adding great value to the book.
