A great book to get your mind around a tough topicReview Date: 2006-08-26
If you're new to the world of non-profits (like me) . . .Review Date: 2005-09-05
What's especially inviting is that Jill Esau, the author, uses everyday language to explain how to get started in the non-profit sector. It is a practical, roll-up-your-sleeves type of book. Ms. Esau includes dozens of "best practices," worksheets and examples to get you from - "I have a passion to do X, but I don't know where to start" - to - "I helped build a successful, non-profit organization that is giving back to my community."
Of particular interest in Chapter 6, Ms. Esau explains what the the "Charitable Choice" laws are all about, i.e. what the Faith-Based and Community Initiative really means to faith-based organizations. It was interesting to learn that many public officials are still unaware what this Initiative is all about.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is ready to get started building a non-profit organization. It will also help you determine if developing a new non-profit is the most effective and efficient approach to fulfill your passion and vision for your social ministry.

Reivew of State & Local Population ProjectionsReview Date: 2008-04-27
The authors provide practical guidance to demographers, planners, and other analysts called on to construct state and local population projections. They use many examples and illustrations and present suggestions for dealing with special populations, unique circumstances, and inadequate or unreliable data; they also describe techniques for controlling one set of projections to another and for interpolating between two projections. They discuss the role of judgment and the importance of the political context in which projections are made. They emphasize the "utility" of projections, or their usefulness for decision making in a world of competing demands and limited resources.
This comprehensive book will provide readers with an understanding not only of the mechanics of commonly used population projection methods, but also of the many complex issues affecting their construction, interpretation, evaluation, and use.
"Population Projections" for those so inclinedReview Date: 2001-05-17
The book is particularly good in describing the fundamentals of population analysis - which many other articles, chapters and books on projections neglect. Additionally, important advanced elements of population projections that are not commonly touched on, such as special adjustments, are addressed nicely here.
The book further instructs the reader how to use projections objectively. Too often, forecasts that are not 100% accurate are dismissed. In fact, as the book describes, imperfect forecasts still provide considerable utility in presenting alternatives, promoting agendas, sounding warnings and providing a base for other projections. To this end, the book provides a unique service in not only describing how to make small-area projections, but what to do with them.
In addition to the conventional techniques and concepts described, the authors present the latest developments in the field of projections, including structural models, GIS applications and innovative evaluative techniques.
I would strongly recommend this book as both a textbook - particularly for demography, planning, and economics students, as well as a resource for professional planners, administrators and scientists that rely on population projections.

Nice collection of 52 stories of family lifeReview Date: 2007-12-07
I also liked that this is a non-traditional family. It is a blended family, 4 kids from one Dad (who comes over to visit), and the new baby with Joseph who lives with the family. I also like that the family is biracial, which is hard to find in children's books. But the book does not make a point of either of these unique aspects of family. Instead, it tells stories from the point of view of what kids are interested in: kittens, making watery messes at bathtime, sharing, little mice, caterpillars turning into butterflies, finding a ladybug on a leaf, helping to wash a car....
This is a cute book for any family!

A Book of DecisionsReview Date: 2001-07-30
If this book interests you, then you might also consider "The Constitution and Religion", edited by Robert S. Alley. It also consists of the actual opinions in cases involving the first amendment and religion. For analysis of cases and biographies of Supreme Court justices consider buying "The Oxford Companion to the Supreme Court."

Truly Historic Rim CountryReview Date: 2008-10-04
Aside from the historical perspective, the book is also littered with funny little sub-stories like how Gisela (which I always thought was pronounced "Jizzela") and the Baby Doll Ranch got their names, as well as uncle Frank chasing the hatchery truck.
There is a great blend of history and storytelling that kept me glued to see what adventures awaited in the next chapter. It truly gave me a new appreciation for that wonderful state of Arizona and all its rich history.
Thank you for putting pen to paper to share your collection of facts, stories and personal memories. I became so attached that I almost feel like I lived that history myself.
Frontier HistoryReview Date: 2008-03-02
We especially appreciated the Indian history woven into the narrative-- so tragic and yet fascinating. Among the many places described we'd love to visit; we are especially intrigued with the descriptions of the Mazatzal Wilderness and the pueblo ruins near Payson. Since we probably won't be able to see these places, the book is providing us with great images--ones that help us feel like we are part of innumerable scenes and the histories.

Tao for US business & governmentReview Date: 2008-08-06
Adopting the philosophical spirit of Tao, he offers this book for the modern day of American business, also applicable to US Government and bureaucracy. He rightly points out (p.53) "When power is prized too much, it stiffens into chains of command and symbols of authority. This breeds bureaucracy and rigidity, and so perish creativity and adaptation. Bureaucracy and rigidity have caused the downfall of organizations from ancient empires to modern mega corporations (superpowers) "
Another worthy advice for the hawks in U S Capitol comes from page 113 " The military strategy of Tao says, avoid preemptive strikes. Taking no precipitous action, one demonstrates the action of peace. Speaking without threat, one disarms the opposition. Earnestly asserting, without enmity, one disallows an enemy's existence".
This Tao at Work is a Tao of East and West, ancient and modern, leading and following, ado and do, natural and artificial, and life and death. It is a practical reference guide for business, management and government in the meaning of life, freedom, virtue and happiness.

The best intro to ancient Rome I've ever readReview Date: 2007-09-17
What I love about it is that it not only provides a very concise history of Rome, but explains how the Romans dressed, ate, worked, played, entertained themselves and lived day to day. It also covers the literature and religions of the time.
If you loved HBO's "Rome" series, Colleen McCullough's "Masters of Rome" books or are interested in the era for other reasons, this is a superb, well-written account of the people and the time. I couldn't recommend it more highly.
