Good intro to a Spirit Filled LifeReview Date: 2007-12-31
The book gives a brief overview of what it means to live a Spirit filled life. It also provides some examples from Dr. Stanley's life. Finally, it gives some details as to how to open yourself up to living the Spirit filled life.
This book was easy to read and understand. The book explains many of the scriptures that speak about Spirit filled living. It also uses stories and events from Dr. Stanley's life to demonstrate the scripture meaning. There is also a chapter about Spiritual gifts.
The key is simply to recognize that all believers have the Holy Spirit living within them. Once you realize and understand and accept this, you will know what to look for and to listen for to be in obedience to the will of God.
I would recommend this book to anyone looking to initiate or to further their study of a Spirit filled life.

Make Room in Your LibraryReview Date: 2008-10-26
For those of us who appreciate Charles Stanley for his straight talk, Biblically sound, informative teachings with a conversational practicality, he does not disappoint. And yes, he keeps to his style of inviting us to grow. He shares personal anecdotes to enhance his commentary. I'm a lifelong Lutheran and I believe that this book has so much to offer that it transcends theological differences.
On the practical side, I like that the scriptural reference is fully provided for each topic. As one with a penchant for note taking, the wide margins are generous. The paper has a strong feel and holds up to my heavier handwriting. The new graphics (compared to the HC 1995 version) offer a more eye friendly contemporary feel. There's a thorough index, thankfully with generous margins for personal additions. I can find something quick and not try the patience of the group members as I search for that perfect passage that "I know is in here somewhere." Considering the "weight" of the material presented I like that it's light enough to carry to Bible study. Your library won't be complete without this book.

Wonderfully Written Historic NovelReview Date: 2000-06-22
"The Last Hero" is a very well-written adventure story, all the more interesting because it is true. My only complaint (a very minor one) concerns the absence of notes and bibliography which could have given some historical documentation and sources.
Another good book is "The River Congo: The Discovery, Exploration and Exploitation of the World's Most Dramatic River" (nonfiction) which is also by Peter Forbath (a journalist who reported on Africa). Henry Morton Stanley was also a bestselling author, he wrote: "How I Found Livingstone" (1872); "Through the Dark Continent" (1878); and "In Darkest Africa" (1890).

Good or bad?Review Date: 2008-11-17
And then I read the epilogue. I really wonder why Richardson put this here in the manner presented. It pretty much tells just another tale of a way of life destroyed forever and forced into the modern world that it isn't made to be a part of, causing supreme detriment. This basically destroys every prior notion I held of Stan and his team having a positive effect despite the damage done in the story. However, Richardson does all this in two pages and doesn't make the connection to Stan, basically telling the reader that Stan's effect was good so that these people can face the modern world with the goodness of Christianity, etc. But I wonder, did Richardson neglect the details of someone else interfering, or is it Stan and his team who cause this destruction?
If you believe the tribes have gained eternal life, then I suppose the issue is settled. But if you're not so sure and/or you think any damage done could be justified by the "hope of eternal life", then it's not so clear. And I know Richardson's position of: someone's going into these tribes, isn't it best that good people go in first? That's a respectable position, I suppose, but there is enough controversy that I can't decide where to stand on the issue.
As a side note on the book, one thing I wonder is how exactly Richardson reads peoples minds like only God or a novel writer could do. This also really brings into question for me just how legitimate this account is, or whether he tried his best to convey what he thought they would be thinking, or if he was inspired by the holy spirit to write something otherwise unknowable to his mind, or if maybe some of this is pure fabrication serving as a piece of propaganda (surely some of it is true, no doubt) meant to inspire Christians to engage in missionary endeavors "that will make your life like a good novel".
Whatever the case, Lords of the Earth is an interesting story and a worth-while read, but is the effect of the missionaries detailed good or bad? Some of both for sure, but ultimately (and regardless of this accounts reliability), who knows?

Light into darknessReview Date: 2006-10-30
The second part of the book describes the early life of Stan Dale, his conversion, and his burden for those in darkness. He is drawn as a determined man, physically strong and fit, with firm convictions.
The book goes on to tell of Stan's coming to the Yali people. How a strange story begins over his identity, protecting his life. How the first few Yali Christians were killed, and later Stan and a fellow missionary were brutally murdered. How another missionary family died in a plane crash, except for the nine-year-old son, whose friendship with the Yali paves the way for them to turn to Christ.
The book reminded me Christ's words in John 12:24, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit." On earth, Stan Dale never saw the fruit his life and death brought forth, but he will rejoice in heaven with the Yali that are there through his witness.

A whole new perspective of sex in Christian marriage.Review Date: 2008-10-10
The author states that this book was written to address the still very common problem of unsatisfactory sexual relationships in Christian marriage - even though Christians, in general, know and believe that sex is a good and God ordained thing, and despite the deluge of information available to confront sexual dysfunction and to help enhance sexual pleasure. The author says that what he sees consistently with his clients is that "something big is still missing".
The basic premise of this book is that sex is not just a good and enjoyable aspect of the marriage relationship, but is, in fact, a holy and sacred act: an act whose purpose and goal is unity and oneness, and through which the full nature of God and his relationship to His church is revealed. Besides explaining the premise and the ideal, the author also spends a great deal of time discussing forces - both external (society, etc.) and internal (fear, etc.) - that keep us from experiencing all the God has designed for marital sexual intimacy.
I highly recommend this book. Read it with your spouse. Talk about it and go over the discussion questions. It has the potential to change everything you ever thought about sex.

A Good Dose of Belly Laughter -- with Reverence!Review Date: 2007-05-04
Gardner also cites the renowned Dr. Howard Hendricks as saying, "We should not be embarrassed to discuss what God was not embarrassed to create." This book will help Believers get over their embarrassment of s-e-x as it brings a healthy amount of humor to a very sacred subject and provides excellent tools for couples to discuss this very sacred act. Readers will greatly benefit from the author's challenge to approach every aspect of their sex lives with the question, "Will this make us more 'one,' or will this drive us apart?"
Sacred Sex is a great balance of Scriptural truth, challenge to change, practical wisdom, reverence for the "Marriage Bed," and God-honoring fun! Couples should buy it, read it together, and Celebrate Oneness in Marriage the way God intended!

Entertaining MysteryReview Date: 2007-12-31
This book is a classic mystery tale with excellent courtroom scenes. The setup is quick and interesting, and the investigation uncovers a terrific maze of clues and red herrings. Perry is obviously the star character and he is highly intelligent, driven to succeed, and quite funny at times. The author was an attorney himself, and that undoubtedly helps make the courtroom scenes so entertaining. The plot moves along briskly, at just over 200 pages there is little room for fat in the story.
Reading a Perry Mason novel is kind of like going to a Holiday Inn. They're all pretty much the same, and if you like one you'll probably like them all. That's no insult, because I happen to enjoy the series. For newcomers, this volume is as good as any for an entry point. If you're a fan, then you'll be perfectly at home with Perry, Della, Paul Drake, and even the ever-ineffectual Hamilton Burger. This book is not likely to help you think deep thoughts, but it's a highly enjoyable read that will entertain for several hours.

The Puzzle Hidden in Plain SightReview Date: 2005-11-05
Mervin Selkirk is conversing with Norda Allison when he slaps his seven-year old son Robert for interrupting. Suddenly Norda sees the sadistic streak behind the mask of smiling politeness and affability over the selfish personality. Norda dislikes this discipline but Mervin says she's a "softie". The result is the breaking of their engagement. A few days later Mervin punches Norda's boyfriend, Nate Benedict, in a restaurant. Mervin explains it as self-defense and his friends there back his story. Later Norda gets anonymous letters about suitors who killed former fiancees. The postal authorities couldn't catch the sender. Mervin's previous wife, Lorraine Selkirk Jennings, tells of a toy printing machine; this is enough for a search warrant on Mervin. The toy printing press doesn't match. His first wife tells of Mervin's ruthlessness and cleverness, and the power of his family. Then Lorraine sends a flight ticket to arrange for a meeting in person. The Jennings surprise Norda with their plans; is this some sort of trick? They have an excuse for Robert's absence. [Did you suspect anything?]
Something happens during the night, Norda packs and leaves, then visits Perry Mason to tell of the problems. The investigation does not agree with Norda's claims. Something's wrong here. The mystery deepens when a gun is found in the bed where Norda Allison slept. The police were called and took Norda in for questioning. We soon learn the reason for this activity: Mervin Selkirk was found shot dead in his car, parked at the Country Club. Perry is visited by Nate Benedict, who has a permit to carry the gun he brought on his flight from San Francisco. Nate also owns a gun like the murder weapon. Perry meets Mervin's father Horace Livermore Selkirk, as unscrupulous as he is powerful, and he is very powerful. Perry and Della use a ruse to interview Robert's baby-sitter. By following Barton Jennings they find a clue to where Robert was taken. New facts are discovered to complicate the mystery. Chapter 12 starts to uncover the mystery and the disappearance of Robert. Perry meets the young woman who was placed in charge, and talks to her about the laws and her actions.
The Preliminary Hearing starts in Chapter 14. Perry's cross-examination of Sgt. Holcomb raises questions about the prosecution's theory of the crime. Other facts are brought out in the testimonies to clarify the question of guilt. But there is a new fact that connects Norda to the dead body of Mervin! The judge calls for a conference at the noon recess and there is a new development that could free Perry's client. But a shocking surprise shakes Horace Selkirk. Hamilton Burger brings in his surprise witness who was at the Country Club parking lot (Chapter 17). Perry's cross-examination of Millicent Bailey neutralizes her testimony. Then Barton Jennings appears as a witness, and tells of what he knows. Perry's cross-examination has this witness contradicting his testimony. Then another witness is recalled so Perry can question her. Now there is another material fact that is brought out. Norda is released from custody. The last chapter resolves the outstanding questions and explains the unknown events. Erle Stanley Gardner describes the corrupt and powerful people who run society, albeit in fiction. Like other novels, the courtroom scenes are the dramatic high points.
