I use the Dover coloring books often as I home school. The kids are busy, quiet AND they listen. It really helps to reinforce the lessons when they color the same things that they are learning about. There is a Dover book for most major subjects!

I am using this resource with homeschool Pre to 2nd grade children. This coloring book helps Greece come to life with pictures of markets, shipping, a wedding, several different tradesmen at their trade, children playing, senate, theater, school, ect...

One warning, four pages (out of roughly 45 pictures) have nudity: two of Olympic games and one gym (tastefully covering the front, but showing male backsides) and then one of a topless dancing/acrobatic girl at a party. I choose to scan them, in order to give them clothing.

Other content: there are solider scenes with weapons bristling, but only two battle scenes (one on water and one on land). For battle scenes both are tasteful, even for younger dc. It also includes about four pages of religious ceremonies/scenes, including the oracle at Delphi.

Overall an excellent resource; very well done!!

I like this coloring book for children because it will help bring lessons on Ancient Greece to life and reinforce basic facts. It is organized primarily by chronology, has fairly complex drawings with enough detail and background for interest, and most significantly contains a brief historical note at the bottom of each picture. It includes highligts like Solon introducing reforms, Hipparchus being assasinated, Socrates being found guilty and condemned to death and Aristotle tutoring young Alexander. It also includes more general topics like weddings and funerals, the market, shipping and more. There is some male nudity (not frontal) like at the Gymnasium and Olympics. There is some incorporation of Greek mythology (like sculpting of a statue of Hermes, and consulting an oracle at Delphi.) Note, however, the art is not done in Ancient Greek style, but rather more realistic, scene by scene.

This is good for any grade schooler or even a high schooler who still likes to color. The covers and inside covers have art which are the colored scenes of ones found in the book, so there is also some direction or incentive to make the art come to life.

Useful alone or with a curriculum.

Lulu's back in town!

This "Color Special" reprints some of the stories from Dark Horse's series of Little Lulu books, but in color rather than black and white. The color improves the stories, especially in cases where color is integral to the story, like the one where Lulu accidentally dyes her skin green. Little Lulu is generally considered to be the best comic book about a little girl ever. This book provides solid evidence in favor of that belief.

Finally! After 11 volumes of classic Little Lulu stories in black and white, Dark Horse has released a "Color Special" of stories reprinted from issues as early as Little Lulu #4, ending with a tale from Little Lulu #86. Except for Tubby's little cousin Chubby no longer being a mini-Tubby (in this Dark Horse release he's inexplicably blonde instead of red haired like Tub), I have no argument with this issue. "Witch Hazel" stories abound (including "The Witches Picnic" from Little Lulu #75, one of my all-time faves) and there's a sampling of "Spider" stories, wherein Tubby acts as a detective to clear an innocent Lulu of blame for some misdeed committed -- usually -- by her dad.

There is no other comic I can think of that can be read over and over for sheer pleasure than Stanley's Little Lulus. Brilliant writing, clever plotting, and funny gags abound. Except for Carl Barks, who wrote and illustrated the magnificent Donald Duck comics, John Stanley was without peer in comics for juveniles.

It's a Lulu!

John Stanley's Dell Little Lulu Comics are some of the most popular comics in history, and Dark Horse's recent decision to reprint them vies with The Complete Peanuts as the comics publishing event of the century. The Dark Horse series, currently up to twelve books, reprints the comics in black and white with color covers. Even the Another Rainbow hardback reprint volumes were black and white with included color covers. Here at last is the first all color volume, and it's a Lulu!

Little Lulu Color Special reprints twenty six stories random from Dell's Marge's Little Lulu comics numbers 4 through 86. Since they're not being released in order, this leaves plenty of room for future volumes. Remember when comics were a quarter? Neither do I, but this is almost as good, with Amazon bringing the price down under 50 cents per story. Of course then you got a whole comic for that. But there are tradeoffs. Instead of newsprint, here's a high-quality 10 X 7 inch over 200 pages bound volume with clearer printing than the comics ever had. These are the same comics, though; you can still see the mistakes common in the Dell and later Western Publishing reprints.

These comics were the inspiration for CINAR's The Little Lulu Show cartoon seen on HBO Family, with Lulu initially voiced by Tracey Uhlman (and now on DVD). Many show episodes were based on the John Stanley stories, and many of those stories are in this book, including "The Green Girl" and "Boy Canon Ball". Thanks to Dark Horse, fun comics are back, and heralding their return, the queen of them all: Little Lulu.

To read voulume of Little Lulu is to know what is going to happen in a all of them. This is not a bad thing. while certain stories are rewritten over and over again (lulu get revenge on the niaborhood boys only club, Lulu dad is in investgated for somthing Lulu is acused of by Tubby Lulu's male best friend, Little Alvin the naiborhood pest making Lulu tell him a story so he will behave they are differnt enough to still be a fun read.

I've read all of the Little Lulu books in this series with my 4-year old son, and we enjoy them all. However, I like the later books in the series more than the earlier -- the art is better and the characters are more developed. I found his particular book especially entertaining for the both of us.

One of the most valuable texts any general surgeon specially the postgrads must have. each chapter is heavily loaded with very good graphics, and the text is very easy to grasp. and it gives a large space to operative details and steps. personally i take one of the volumes with me on duties. The only thing is that it is increasing necessary for the authors to update this edition. laproscopy in many situations is still -on the pages of this edition- in the cradle!!, which is not the true case, and many indications for some investigations have changed. but after all this is medicine. if you have this text and keepon with Advances in Surgery or Surgical Clinics of North America then you would cover most of the defects.

What's in a name? Lieberson knows!

Review Date: 2001-09-04
Lieberson has written a scholarly, witty, and extremely informative book about the factors influencing parents' choices of first names for their children. Using data from 7 countries plus the states of Illinois and California, he shows that "fashion" affects children's names just as much as it does choices in clothing or music. Names became objects of fashion several centuries ago in the West, when, among other influences, state regulations and religious customs loosened their hold over what names parents could choose. With the changes concomitant upon nations entering the modern era, name choices subsequently became more matters of individual preference rather than custom and tradition. However, parents made their choices within the context of changing tastes driven by forces "internal" to the naming process itself, rather than being "determined" by external technological or mass media forces.

The sounds of names themselves display explicable trends, such as the preference for names ending in "a" or "n." Groups of names with similar endings rise and fall together, in fairly orderly, long-term movements.

Lieberson does a brilliant job in presenting evidence, using simple graphs and tables, rather than elaborate quantitative statistical analysis. His chapter on trends in name choices among ethnic and racial groups is particularly compelling, as he shows the joint affects of internal mechanisms (e.g. how names "sound") and external influences (e.g. a group's desire to assimilate quickly).

Want to know why your parents named you "Judy" rather than "Judith"? This book has the answer!

A MATTER OF TASTE is a powerful contribution to our understanding of the factors underlying the popularity of first names. Lieberson has brought together a wealth of ideas, concepts, and principles to the analysis of social change. He has used empirical data from the research on names to do this. The data come from several locales including various parts of the United States, England and Wales, Scotland, Denmark and France. Extensive attention paid to the media influence (or lack of) on the popularity of names. For anyone interested in first names this is a valuable background source to understanding their importance.

Seven years ago, my wife and I thought we were going to be clever and original if we named our daughter "Hannah". We didn't know any Hannahs in our generation. But now it seems every other family had a "Hannah" in the 1990s. After reading Lieberson's book, I understand that we got swept up in one of the many waves of name-fashions that he so ably chronicles.

This is an entertaining book, remarkably so considering the author's intention which was to write a serious work of academic deep-think. So there's a great deal of sociologist talk, which is decidedly not entertaining. But, just as the cartoons redeem even the worst issues of the _New Yorker_ , this book is worth getting just for the many statistical charts. You can follow the spectacular career of "Jennifer", the ups and downs of Biblical names, learn about names and social class, and so on.

Finally, I recommend this book to economists who are interested in fads and herd behavior.

This Congolese market story introduces children to a village where peoples' lives are intertwined and their talents and services contribute to village life. The cause and effect trading process challenges children to follow sequence in an inventive and entertaining way as they ponder the meaning of value beyond money. Luzolo and Kiese show children how they can reach beyond their immediate desires to care for someone in need. Rich illustrations and a unique printmaking process make the brightly colored African clothing pop from the warm village backgrounds.

Outstanding primer for both the new investor and the more experienced investor interested in improving her/his investing savvy.

First, this book illustrates rather convincingly, how investing just a moderate amount of money consistently over a period of time, can build personal wealth beyond most people's highest expectations. Makes it clear that there are no "guaranteed, get rich quick approaches" but that by being patient and investing in any of a broad range of solid investments...."financial serenity" is definitely within reach.

Then, this book explains the basics of personal financial management; including life insurance, real estate, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, REITs, futures, annuities, 401k plans, IRAs and tips to help determine which is right for you. This explanation of the basics, provides a framework which can be used to help individuals determine which investment vehicles fit their personal financial profile/style, and how they can take the first steps in building a personal financial plan which can secure their future.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in improving their financial position in life. It is written by one of the world's leading financial management experts in terms that anyone, from any walk of life/profession can easily understand.

This is a really good series for young boys and girls who are having a hard time with reading. Its about 2-3 grade level and appeals to kids with a liking for solving things. I think the subject matter would appeal to [...] who read well too. I start out reading it with my grandsons and when they get interested, I find something I just have to do - but let them read on their own until I get back. Seems to work!

Hands down, the best book I ever read. Totally helped me define who I was and what my life was about when I found it in my 20s and I still feel the effects of it in my late 30s. This book helps you see the meaning of your life through symbol and story. It's a sort of armchair vision quest that helps you figure out what it's all about. Brilliantly done. I also got their later revision, Mythic Path, but I'm partial to the original. It feels more organic, flows better, I think.
