This Environmental Law Handbook has proven to be an invaluable resource to me as an environmental mediator and public involvement specialist. I use it constantly so that I can be technically sharp at work. It's dry reading, but very valuable! Paired with the Consensus Building Handbook by Susskind et al, it is the core of any environmental and public policy specialist.

This handbook is an essential tool to anyone in the environmental field. There are always new additions, so having a recent copy helps but it's not necessary since the environmental laws don't change that much. I would recommend getting a newer edition when a major law has passed so that the reader can understand the impact the new law will have on their community. A copy can usually be found at either the public library or a law library but there is SO MUCH information packed into this book that I highly recommend having your own copy so you can hi-light the text and bookmark the important sections that apply to your business.

Perhaps the highest compliment I can pay to any author, or any literary work, is not being able to get enough of it. I simply didn't want the book to end -- so I am reading it again.

The post cold-war world is seeming chilly to the Russians, and the only way to save face is to beat the American's at their own game, American football. The (former?) KGB is involved as well with its "arsenal" of secret weapons and programs -- including my favorite secret-agents Bimbova and Bendova. The Americans also have their secret weapons and programs, including a reverse-engineered prototype of an inter-galactic hover craft that crash-landed near Roswell in the 1940's.

This is a hilarious work of creative genius. Kroll is great! The multi-faceted and multidimensional plot kept my interest throughout the book. And since a sequel is technically impossible, I would like see a prequel, with Bimbova and Bendova of course.

An exciting adventure of the day after tomorrow, "Fourth & Gogol" is incredibly detailed, impossible to predict, subversively funny and yet deeply emotional. The scenes, from loading a Makarov automatic to the unique agony of football camp (called a "FULAG," insanely enough) to a horrifying rape of a teenager to a hysterically funny encounter with a cross-dressing ex-president aboard Air Force One to an evil Stalinist eugenics program, one is moved to believe Kroll has been overexposed to Kubrick, Clancy, P. J. O'Rourke and maybe even Voltaire. It's hilariously sick stuff with characters you'll never forget. It's the utter unporedictability of it that makes it such a worthwhile adventure.

Mix one part "The Longest Yard" in with one part "Dr. Strangelove," a helping of "The Hunt for Red October," any Stanislaw Lem you've got at hand and then pour in some marinated (and I do mean marinated) Russian masters, hit "LIQUEFY," and you come up with "Fourth & Gogol: The True Story of Russia's Top-Secret American Football Program."

Who knew that an atom-bio confrontation, eugenics, genetic engineering, Area 51 and a wholesale invasion of the West by Russia could be humorous? I guess Alex Kroll did. And it is.

The Russians are stinging. Licking their wounds for losing the Cold War. So they set their sights on humiliating the Americans by beating them at their very own, most American game. Payback for the 1980 Olympic Hockey upset. They blackmail the NFL's best coach (he's got a betting problem) and arrest some of Russia's best athletes to form a team at football GULAG out in Russian Central Asia. They will take on the Americans at the coming Olympic Games, where football is to be the demonstration sport. The coolest part, possibly, is Russia's secret weapon: A special, central-computer controlled "Head-Up" football helmet system with visor displays showing formations, blocking assignments, pass routes etc.

Meanwhile, Russian dictator Hrapchenko decides to spring west and south -- seeking the direct route to the Persian Gulf and brie in Paris. Not that I'd blame him for it!

It's an insane, well-written read. That's all I'll say.

If you love international intrigue, and football -- the kind where a certain female entertainer has not only one, but several wardrobe mishaps, and then goes on to play stellar cornerback through the second half -- look no further than Kroll's droll stroll through 60s-style one-upmanship between US and THEM (read Rooskies).

While I, myself, am not an expert on the genre, I recognize expertise when I read it. Kroll's handle on things technological, espionage-related and how to kill a guy with your bare hands -- on and off the football field -- is firm, baby.

The larger picture is not left un-splattered upon, either. Sure, times have changed since we pointed so many ICBMs at each other, but I sense a subtle bit of finger pointing going on between the pages here. Check the latest polls and you'll find a US citizenry that doesn't necessarily feel it's at war, strangely enough. Could Iraq and Afghanistan be this century's version of the Cold War? If so, what the heck do we call it? GWOT? Pshaw! Warm War? Well, getting warmer.

Anyhow, no matter what you make of "Fourth & Gogol" by the time you get to the pseudo-apocalyptic ending, you'll likely be viewing Mr. Tom Clancy's deadwood thrillers through the space dust in the rear-view mirror of your own literal stealth spaceship -- made in the USA, I might add.

Comrade Kroll, you have written a funny, funny novel. Now, about the film rights...

George Nelson's life work goes beyond the production of a building or a product although he did both of these things . . . and well. George thought about the fundamental problems of living in a designed environment.

A must read book on the greatest American designer of the 20th Century.

George Nelson was not only a creative artistic talent, he was also a commercial genius (just like Picasso was). These two talents provided his secret for success that would reward him throughout his life. This book documents in detail how George Nelson thought and designed. The attention is clearly on his biography, this is not a coffee table book filled with an overdose of pictures. A wonderful biography about a designer that was the founding father of American Modern Design. I also suggest to visit the wonderful online archive about George Nelson at WWW.GEORGENELSON.ORG.

A terrific biography about a wonderful and creative individual. Although George Nelson created many iconic designs his legacy lives more in how he lived his life and who he chose to be.

An intelligent and humanistic piece of biographical work. I couldn't put it down and at the end of the book I felt as though I had lost a friend.

Although the book is minimal on color illustrations and its strength relies mainly on its text, contrary of what I had expected, I was very pleased with it. It is a very comprehensive study of the work of Nelson, one of the pioneers of American industrial design, giving more importance to the concepts and the process of design, rather than to the produced objects, buildings and exhibitions themselves. The preface by Ettore Sottssass is equally outstanding, as most of his written works are.

The Glorious Journey by Charles Stanley is an excellent resource for Christians. Divided into sections, the book covers a wide range of topics including Bible doctrine, daily living, personal growth, and spiritual disciplines. Each entry contains a Scripture verse, commentary by Dr. Stanley, quotes, and more. The graphics, information boxes, and index provide for quick and easy access to specific topics. This valuable resource has answered many of my questions regarding the Christian walk, helping me to better understand God's word and apply it to my life. Each of my brothers received a copy of this book as a birthday gift last year. I would recommend it to anyone desiring "insight, encouragement, and guidance" in their own walk with the Lord.

Gothic comics - An outstanding blend of words and pictures

Review Date: 2005-04-03
Edgar Allan Poe is a natural choice as the first volume of the Graphic Classics volumes, a series partially inspired by the Classic Illustrated collection of comic books, which attempted to lure young readers into reading respectable, "classic" authors through the comics medium. This new incarnation, however, takes an entirely different tact, combining fantastic literary stories with equally talented artists for something that is far more entertainment than education.

Also, while these are "comic books," the illustrators are far more "New Yorker" than "Fantastic Four." Creative, individualistic and highly stylized, each artist leaves their own distinctive mark on their story, creating a unique experience, a collaboration between author and artist.

This 3rd Edition of "Graphic Classics: Volume 1 - Edgar Allan Poe" assembles nine short stories and three poems of the master, including his most famous works as well as some less well-known. Each is given a different treatment, ranging from illustrated text pieces to full comic strips. Each is of very high quality, making this book highly recommended.

Included in this volume are:

"The Tell-Tale Heart" - My first Edgar Allan Poe story, that I was assigned to read in Jr. High School, is still a provocative and powerful piece. Artist Rick Geary gives us a straight-forward rendition, including a lovingly detailed picture of The Eye.

"King Pest" - A story of plague-ridden London, where two hapless sailors find themselves guests at the table of the King and Queen of pestilence. Anton Emdin's grotesque illustrations add a nice comic flair to the tale.

"The Premature Burial" - A claustrophobic tale of fear of premature burial, and how we often create the demon's that haunt us. Joe Ollman does a splendid job of creating atmosphere, and the panic of being buried alive.

"El Dorado" - This one I liked a lot. A semi-humorous cartoons style brings the point of the sad poem home even more fiercely.

"Spirits of the Dead" - A surrealistic adaptation of a quiet Poe poem, ruminating on death.

"The Imp of the Perverse" - Like "The Tell-tale Heart," a story of the sting of guilt, and how a perfect murder is never as perfect as we would like to think.

"The Raven" - A new adaptation of Poe's masterpiece, this is an assemble version with a different artist doing a different stanza. It comes off beautifully, allowing Poe's words to be the true star of the show.

"The Masque of the Red Death" - A text-and-pictures adaptation, full of the stunning delights of Propero's hidden Bohemia, and the plague of the Red Death that intrudes on their party.

"Never Bet the Devil Your Head" - A wild and funny adaptation of a wild and funny story. An excellent ending.

"Hop-Frog" - The text is presented in its entirety, and the artists is so completely well-suited to this story that I think I will forever see the foolish fat king and his eight fat friends as portrayed by artist Lisa K. Weber.

"The Cask of Amontillado" - My favorite Poe story is well treated, keeping the essential dialog and tension, even while being distilled down to a few pages.

"The Fall of the House of Usher" - Mostly a text-and-pictures piece with some dialog, the artist captures the haunted Roderic Usher's lonely fate. As well as his sisters'.

Edgar Allan Poe Graphic Classics

Okay, I get the point. Having read all of Tom Pompluns' classic compilations, I have often thought `Why not get mainstream artists? I'm sure John Byrne would do one for him? Hey, Steranko? What about Wiacek? Or Perez?'. But, call me slow, this collection of stories has opened the door.

The tales he has chosen to adapt, and the artists he has assigned the work to, work. Why? In a twisted way, the sheer esoteric nature of the Poe, Twain, Stevenson, Doyle, Bierce, and Lovecraft stories match the highly stylized artwork from Geary, Weber, Howarth, Knight, Shaw and others. Put a story like King Pest into the hands of Frank Brunner, and you have a masterful piece, that may miss the off mark. Brunner is fantasy. Pest is satire, at its' best. Neal Adams doing the Cask of Amontilado would be a visual feast, but the art would overshadow the terror of the story. Some of the art in this volume does not necessarily make the tale sing, but it does put the onus onto the writer and as a team, it either does, or does not work.

Most of these work. This volume includes The Premature Burial, Imp of the Perverse, King Pest, The Tell Tale Heart, Masque of the Red Death, Hop Frog, Never Bet the Devil Your Head, Cask of Amontilado, Fall of the House of Usher, and the Raven. A couple of these are reprints but 40 of the 144 pages are new. Because of the new material, the book has a `new' feel to it.

Of the stories here, I had never heard of half of them. King Pest is a hoot. Hop Frog is delightful. The Imp of the Perverse is perverse. And the Premature Burial is masterful. Material from a genius like Poe should never be forgotten.

What the heck Tom, I bet Steranko would do a cover!!

Compiled and edited by Tom Pomplun, Graphic Classics: Edgar Allan Poe is an outstanding graphic novel anthology of diverse comic-book style adaptations of classic stories and poems by the legendary Edgar Allan Poe. Included are "The Raven", "The Cask of Amontillado", "The Tell-Tale Heart", and nine others. Each black-and-white rendition is by a different artist, and the styles range from gruesomely realistic to extravagantly bizarre; all of them deftly capture Poe's brilliant and sometimes shocking dialogue, plots, and the helplessness of man. Also very highly recommended from their "Graphic Classics" series are the Eureka Productions graphic novel editions of H.P. Lovecraft (0971246440); Ambrose Bierce (0971246467); and Bram Stoker (0971246475).

This is the first that actually offered sincere and truthful advice and inspiring thoughts. What I liked best is that Women are given as much of the blame as the guys are... I read "Heart to Heart Worlds Apart" shortly after it was published in November of 1999. I loved it so much I bought copies as Christmas presents for all my family and many of my friends to read.

This book is a well written, easy to read, story about the friendship between two families from different backgrounds, different cultures, different races, different continents, and the author's trip to Africa to visit her friends.

I enjoyed how the author intertwined childhood stories of herself and her friend before they ever knew each other to show the things they have in common. I also relished the way in which the author's writing style helped me feel like I was sharing her experiences and her feelings. I especially enjoyed her account of visiting the "seeing" and "feeling" sides of Victoria Falls and her account of the dragonfly migrations at her mountainside home at dawn and dusk.

Reading this book helped me turn a corner in my own life. I feel happier and more content more of the time. I feel more appreciative for the things I have instead of focusing on the things I don't have.

The author's story touched my heart and further opened my understanding of how fortunate and blessed most Americans are compared to many people in the world. It made my heart swell wide with gratitude, appreciation, thanksgiving, and a desire to help the author in her quest to raise funds for educational scholarships in the country of Zambia. In addition to the many thousands of dollars of her own money the author has already raised and spent towards printing this book, she is donating 100% of the money raised from the sale of this book to the previously mentioned scholarship fund! She hopes to sell one million books and raise ten million dollars. I whole heartedly endorse this book's message of love and good will towards all people of the world. I encourage you to buy and read this book and recommend it to your friends and family, or even better buy copies for them. This book is WELL WORTH the modest price.

This book is easy to read and is so touching. It's a book that everyone should pick up. It taught me so much about how to love others, no matter what race, creed or color. What an awesome example this author is to everyone in the world. If everyone could feel the same way as she does, there would be peace throughout the land.

I'm still buying more books to help share her message and I hope that everyone else will too. It would be awesome to help some of these less fortunate people be able to get a college education. Don't miss this book!

I've owned this book for many years and refer to it often. As the other reviews say, it very rarely lets me down. The information on each plant is listed alphabeticaly, and together with the index you can easily find plants by common and/or more formal names. The entries are usually only a few paragrahs with just the basics on light needs, moisture, soil, etc. Often that is exactly what you need. Find your copy before it is too late!

When I have exhausted all my other resources, I know I will find what I am looking for in this little paperback book. My thanks to the author, he has never let me down.

I bought this book originally, because I thought it would make me laugh. I grew up without a father and as a believer it was hard for me to see or even relate to God as a father. This book, however changed all that. As I read about Mr. Stanley's experiences with his father I began to see God in the same light in the way he approaches us with forgiveness that is unconditional. I began to see my frailty in no way diminishes the love that the Father has for me inspite of me.

This book made me laugh and cry and gave me something I did not have before I read it, understanding of God as The Creator and yet a loving Dad. The fact that someone wrote such a book, and it was available at the time when I needed it most; to me is just one more proof of a Father who will never leave you nor forsake you.

What amazes me is that Mr. Stanley learned so much in such a short period of time. And that it carried him all these years.

I thank him for sharing his heart, it could not have been easy.

This little book is filled with ideas to live by, that will be a benefit to anyone, and can't help but change the way you think about many things. When you walk into your favorite bookstore, you won't see it among the best sellers. It will leave you with ideas that would take you a lifetime to form,if even then. It was published in 2001 exclusively for Hallmark Cards,Inc.
Gary Stanley had an amazing father who taught him the many lessons of life.Unfortunately ,his father died of the very rare Guillian-Barre Disease, when Gary was only 13 years old.How many people had a Dad who taught them so many lessons by that young age ,that they can write a book aboutit?
Gary ,by telling stories of his father and family, gets his messages across in an unbelievably simple manner;you never feel you're being preached to.
Each little "lesson" concludes with a truism that gives you someting you can carry with you through your everyday life.
A lot of people try to live their lives without any belief systems. Some seem to get by,but if you really want to know what a powerful force a belief in God and a faith system can be;you need to look no further than Gary's book.
You can pick this book up,open it at any page and in only a couple of minutes learn an invaluable lesson of life and a guidepost to follow.
It is filled with truisms,such as these;

"Seek and ye shall find." doesn't apply to everything, but it does apply
to enough.".

"The really happy man is the one who can enjoy the scenery when he has
to take a detour."

"The past is a foreign country;they do things differently there."

"The only person you should compete with is yourself. You can't hope for
a fairer match."

"Tears are an important part of life.Don't bury your heart in the grave
of someone you love."

"Better to have failed at something you love, than to succeed at
something you hate."

"The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeing new landscapes, but
in having new eyes."

"There's always enough evidence for those willing to believe;there's
never enough evidence for those who refuse to believe."

Some pretty good advice fo success, and there's lot's more in this book.

Each evening we choose from a stack of favorite books to read with our boys (one 12, two 10). This book quickly became their favorite, requested above all others. The boys connected with many of the stories and the themes were great launching points for discussion on our own family experiences. Having finished that book, I was happy to find another Gary Stanley book, "What My Dog Has Taught Me...", which we added to our book collection this last month (another favorite). This author has a knack for sharing simple life stories with spiritual parallels -- and, at the end of a long day, his stories make "family reading time" a thoughtful and interesting experience for three active, young boys.

I stumbled across this small book at a local pharmacy and I'm so glad I did. What a wonderful read! The author uses stories from his boyhood to illustrate the affect his father's life had on his own. At the core, this book is about faith in God...and faith in ourselves. I've never considered myself a religious person but this book, told with humorous and heartfelt stories, struck a cord.
