I wish Kellogg and Steele had produced a complete edition of "The Faerie Queene," as this partial edition is, in my opinion, the best presentation the poem has ever had for undergraduates or other beginning adult readers. No introduction or even encyclopedia can cover every angle of a work, but the introductions here give extensive and thorough coverage to what (I think) Spenser himself regarded as most important about his own work. The marginal glosses are sufficient without being overwhelming, as are the explanatory notes, handily provided at the bottom of the page. The spelling is modernized (a great convenience for the beginner), but the language is NOT modernized--the vocabulary is exactly as Spenser left it. This is really a model edition for undergraduates or anyone else who wants to come at the poem at that level.

Very useful, interesting, and detailed introduction and useful notes on the same page as the text. Be warned, however, that the language has been modernized. Although this rewriting adds to the readability of the text, it subtracts from the beauty of the Elizabethan language in which Spenser composed his poem.

In 240 densely informative, generously illustrated pages we get thorough overviews of ancient Egypt's religion, funerary customs, language and writing, art and architecture, and technology, along with chapters on the country's geography, history and relations with other powers. The information is authoritative--the editors and writers are members of the Museum's curatorial staff--and written in a plain, understandable style. Appendices include "Suggestions for Further Reading" (unfortunately not updated since the first printing in 1992), dynasty and king lists, and kings' names in hieroglyphics. (Aramco World

margeret joe would pee her pants after reading this! Her book was a minute contradiction of what is expressed throughout every scene and pictoral document enclosed. As they say a cat always shall land on its feet, perhaps because they are always frowned upon, the cat is more or less another symbol of hate, which you can see after critiqueing a subject several times. As my best friend Paul always says: cats are symbols in themselves, watch for them and pay very close attention to how cats relate to every aspect in which we live, an abundancy of cats will mean less configuration throughout lifes mysteries. The Holocaust relates to these cats in a way ive never seen.I read this book 4 days after my first cat attack<,which was with a boy named Pete who said to me: Myteries are signs, follow them. I could easly go on for another page or two, but i'll be frank if you read this book you'll never forget how hitlers infamous ways corrupted society and the world where children must play, learn, watch, and ultimitely teach.

I am a student of Bill Fields, one of the social studies teachers that did research for Mr. Spencer's book. It is a reading assignment and it is one that I have gotten quite involved in. The choices of text covers many features of the Holocaust. I found it was easy enough to read and interesting enough to keep my attention. I find it quite interesting and fun to know that the 9th period social studies senior class next to mine is taught by Mr. Spencer, the man who co-edited this book with Roselle Chartock, who, if you listen in to NPR, is Alan Chartock's wife. Tank you for doing this book Mr. Spencer, Fields and Beacco. It has been a good read.

For those who have money and live in a castle, they will love it. For people who love a relaxed atmosphere I recommend English country style by Julie Fowler. It is no a bad book, only the cover page is more promising than the rest of the pictures in the book. It is all very Victorian.

Lady Spencer-Churchill has written some very good English decorating books. The photographs are beautiful and the text is always well written. I purchased this book as a gift to give to a friend. I rated it with four stars as I found the book seems to feature mostly yellow or gold colored rooms, which I found a bit repetitive.

What a pleasure! Lady Henrietta's books are always a wonderful combination of how-to and design history. Unlike many decorating books, this is a pleasure to read, even if you're not planning on specific changes. Also, while the photographs are all of splendorous homes of the wealthy, the author consistently gives tips for those of us with a significantly tighter budget. I recommend this to anyone interested in design history (beautiful photos!), and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who lives in a "classic" home, regardless of your level of know-how.

i just got the book - havent read much of it yet. there are a lot of good photos, some of them, however, are just different angles of the same room. it seems that by reading the book a great deal of information will be learnt about georgian homes. my direct interest here was to learn about lighting and there isnt anything to direct me here. i think its a good book for the price.

Stylish, and jaw-droppingly jealous making.

Georgian Style, think of those beautiful curved terraced houses in Bath in their soft-buttery colours. It was an age of clean lines and classical influence.

It would be unfair to say that, being the daughter of the 11th Duke of Malborough, it is natural that Henrietta Spencer-Churchill should have all the advantages to publish a book like this. Not only would she have been bought up in beauty such as this at Blenheim and probably a host of other stately-home-ish settings - but no doubt she has the connections to get this published.

Spencer-Churchill's book certainly rises well above the ordinary. It is beautifully illustrated, her points are simply put and they are generally very clear. She has chosen to illustrate 130 years of interior, exterior and architectural design - from 1700 to 1830 - broadly the Georgian era . With a time frame this broad this book can certainly not qualify as a deeply academic study of the transition of the design. However she illustrates the broad designs trends and how they flowed into one another. She also picks some of the main names of the period (Robert Adam, Capability Brown and so on) and puts them into historical perspective.

The styles and their advent are explained, but also much about how design was influenced from the Chinese influence to the invention of wallpaper. Even the type, and use of colours and the range of colours available gets a mention.

As an interior designer herself, Spencer-Churchill no doubt has a feel for this sort of thing. I was a little disappointed because I felt with a few areas such as window treatments, she often failed to explain if these were original designs of hers based on previous drapes, or 'a georgian style' she had dreamt up. I would have liked to have seen more of Ackermann's period prints for instance - as they showed quite breath-taking interior detail of the latter part of Georgian age.

Occassionally too I found myself grating my teeth as she illustrated a 'Georgian' ideal, but failed to point out at what period in the 130 year time span she was talking about it would have been relevant. But I am being really picky about that.

Overall I found this an absolutely breath-taking book. It at once made me sick with jealousy that I didn't have one of these beautiful homes. I found her style easy to read, informative and if nothing else the illustrations are so beautiful I would keep it simply to look at them.

This is a great book for fans of the Regency period, Heyer or Patrick O'Brian type of books. It is also lovely if you just like beautiful things.

Gorgeous pictures inspire creative dishes when the garden veggies or farmer's market produce overwhelm. This is one of my two favorite books on what to do with garden veggies. Paired with "Greene on Greens and Grains", this is a wonderful supplement that encourages venturing into exploring some of the lesser appreciated vegetables as well as getting creative with the well known favorites. Not the absolute best recipe book, and not the best vegetable history and use book, but a good combination of decent recipes, great photos and fun to read textural descriptions. This makes a good easy chair read when the creative batteries need recharging.

This is a lovely book, which I would recommend to any home gardener or food lover. The writing style is a light and easy to read - with and informative blend of history, nutrition, cultivation and preparation. Most recipies are simple, and many are vegetarian. The photos are fantastic, and will help you finally identify that mystery item at the local farmers market.

The Rosicrucian Revival
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-19
Lovingly written by his son Ralph Lewis, Cosmic Mission Fulfilled is a biography of one of the great souls in modern mysticism, Harvey Spencer Lewis. One can say that Harvey Lewis was truly a Renaissance man. Born in New Jersey in 1883, he exhibited unusual talents at a young age. Eventually, he became an artist, a musician, an inventor, an author, an orator, an entrepreneur but most importantly, he stood out as a mystic. He was a man with a purpose driven life. His intense study of esotericism and psychic phenomena attracted the attention of certain Brothers of the Rosicrucian Brotherhood in France. He met the Elders of this Fraternity in Toulouse where he was initiated into its secret rites in 1909. He was given a commission to awaken the Order on the objective plane, especially in North America, where today it is known as the Ancient and Mystical Order Rosae Crucis (AMORC).

He felt it was necessary to establish the validity of Rosicrucian principles in concrete form. Hence, the word "demonstration" frequently appears in AMORC's monographs. In 1916, one of the most astonishing demonstrations was performed by the then Imperator Harvey Spencer Lewis himself. Before a select audience in New York, he took a piece of zinc and, through an alchemical process, turned it into gold. His greatest alchemical feat, however, was transforming a small group with humble beginnings into an enduring esoteric organization with a membership of a quarter of a million members worldwide.

AMORC's national headquarters was first in New York and then Florida. It was finally re-established in California. Rosicrucian Park in San Jose has become a major tourist attraction. Its Museum of Egyptology is considered one of the finest in the country. More significantly, it serves as an important beacon of light in a world searching for spiritual illumination.

Excellent read about the Order's revival in the New World, the challenges faced.

Against the urgings of the many to return to his highly successful businesses, H. Spencer Lewis persevered in his goal to establish the Rosicrucian Order on our Continent. His rewards were beyond the material rewards he would have obtained had he not followed his chosen path.

We are also given a glimpse of help the Cosmic, or God, provides us if we are but willing to ask.

This is a must read for anyone who is a Rosicrucian or anyone looking for knowledge concerning Rosicrucianism.

I am in my last yr at my college in a degree of education and this book is AWESOME! The only thing I do not like is that it has no glossary. But they words are italized and the chapter is basically spelled out for you.
