What a consummate achievement this book is. Written by Sheila Key in a folksy, colloquial style, it imparts great wisdom to those who would like to know how to look at their 50's and beyond as a time of fulfillment and joy. Peggy Spencer also did a great job. I like the "doc in the box" feature - it adds intellectual and thought provoking elements to each of the "ways."

I highly recommend you buy this book and enjoy!

It wasn't so very long ago, when 50 was deemed the beginning of the end. Soon you'd retire and then wait to die. Fortunately, times are changing. Better health care options mean that we are not only living longer but our so called golden years can now be spent doing what we want to do.

50 Ways to Leave Your 40s is essentially about celebrating a new phase of life and making the most of it. Perhaps, this is something we should do at every stage of life. Just take a moment to celebrate and look to the gifts that each age brings. Still, for many, 50 is the start of a whole new way of thinking and being. They've spent there entire lives focused on making money, getting ahead, succeeding in their careers, and taking care of family. Suddenly, all of those things seem to take on a different hue. It becomes more important to take care of oneself and have a little fun. Sometimes, it can be a very difficult transition. 50 Ways to Leave Your 40s provides the reader with 50 ways to celebrate, enjoy, and explore this new existence.

Entering my 50s, with this book prominently on my nightstand

Have you ever hoped to meet the author of a book you really enjoyed, thinking that you're just bound to enjoy that person? And then, you actually meet that author and think, YUCK?

Well, that's not the case with this book. If you are lucky enough to hang out with Sheila Key sometime and you're like me, you will come away thinking, "geez, not only has she actually LIVED this book, but she is a heck of a lot of fun, too."

I know, because I've known Sheila for 20 years, and even though we haven't seen each other in about 10 years, I've looked forward every New Year's to receiving her cleverly homespun newsletters. Through them, I've watched her beautiful children grow and seen how Sheila's smiling face has somehow retained that youthful look of mischief mixed with excitement--no doubt related to some new and interesting pursuit.

Sheila knows a thing or two about nurturing wonder, mental and physical health, creative stimulation, and a juicy existence. So I for one was thrilled when she told me about her book project. Having been her editor when she wrote for a newspaper, I grew accustomed to Sheila always exceeding my expectations (which are exceedingly high). And, since I was just entering my 50s and really needing such a book, I knew Sheila would not let me down.

I've just started reading, and if I wait until I finish it to write a review, that could take some time. As I figured out after the first chapter, this isn't a book you skim through. It's one you dip into on a regular basis, drink in inspiration, and, thus recharged, go try something new--or remember that long-forgotten thing that brings you joy and lightens your step.

I'll be back when I have more to report. For now, I just wanted to say I love this little book and am looking forward to knowing it better. As I slog through my long work days (finishing a book of my own), it is my reward at the end of one day--and an inspiration for the next.

Their energy is effervescent!

Sheila Key's good nature, warmth, and wonderful humor sparkle on every page, and Peggy Spencer's wise advice balances it perfectly. This book is one of the best gifts you'll ever give any 50-something friend...or yourself.

Honest and encouraging advice for mid-lifers.

Any mid-life reader will find plenty of enjoyable and worthwhile nuggets. You may not agree with all of the advice in this book but there is wide range of topics and they are all delivered with much wit and wisdom. The author plays the role of a good friend who is telling you just what you need to hear, not necessarily what you want to hear. The truth is cushioned with optimism and humor and floats to the surface in bite sized pieces. Instead of telling your best friend that they need to floss, watch less TV, get a prostate exam or unwind with a road trip-- give them this book and let it do the work of telling the truth with pizzazz. By the way, get your own copy because you need the same counsel.

Another excellent manga

Review Date: 2004-03-30
This is the second in the five-book series, Angelic Layer, and picks up immediate where the first book left off. The Angelic Layer tournament in Kanto continues, presenting Misaki Suzuhara with a series of challenges that test both her ability to control her angel, and her love for her angel. But, along with her cheering friends and strange mentor, there are others watching her back. There's more than one mystery involved here!

This is another excellent manga, every bit as good as Angelic Layer 1, which is saying a lot! I enjoyed the characters and the interesting plot-twists. I must say that you really quickly get drawn into the story, feeling all of the excitement of the tournament. The story is intense, and yet quite fun and friendly, making this a good story for kids as well. As with the book 1, this book is printed so as to be read from back-to-front, right-to-left, in the Japanese style, helping to give the reader the feeling of entering another world. I really enjoyed this book, and found the story to be absolutely enthralling. I highly recommend this book!

When I first saw this, I was thinking: Oh [shoot], not ANOTHER pokemon! But really, it's much better than that. It has decent artwork, a semi-believeable plotline, good characters, and is funny, too!! The only problems I had with this were: 1. It's a bit unbelieveable that one of the biggest Angelic Layer champions is in preschool. Second grade, I might buy. But PRESCHOOL?!
2.Darn those cliffhanger endings!

Okay, this anime by CLAMP is closer to Cardcaptor Sakura than to say, X1999. It's pretty light hearted and i would say this is one of my favorite manga series....

Angelic Layer is about an 12 year old girl named Misaki Suzuhara (AKA Misakichii by her friends! ^^) who, after watching a TV commercial of Angelic Layer, wants to play Angelic Layer! She loved seeing how the smaller angel was able to defeat the larger angel, cuz she's not exactly what people would call big for her age. Someone even thought she was 9!Angelic Layer is having to "angel" (like dolls) fight. You use a special thing to communicate with it (Sorry, i don't know what its called.).

In the beginning of Angelic Layer you'll see a newspaper like thing and if you're a CLAMP fan, you'll DEFINITELY recognize alot of the stuff they're talking about! *Grins*

My 6 year olds therapist recommended this book to me to understand anxiety and different ways to handle it. Boy the Dragon is such a wonderful and easy way to deal with it. The therapist said "This is the anxiety Bible for young children" and I can see why she says that. I have never experienced anxiety in children or adults so this is starting me off from the beginning and I am getting a hold of it and tackling it quick. Great read for parents that do not understand anxiety!

Huge help to my daughter with OCD

My daughter (now 12) was diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive disorder at age 9. Given that OCD is an anxiety-type disorder, and my daughter had always had fears and anxieties around certain things, I bought this book. We found it even more helpful than the OCD-specifc books. The etiology of anxiety and OCD are similar, and this book helps the child evoke the power of their own though process. By becoming the "boss" of their thoughts, they can reduce the power of their anxieties/obsessions. Basically, it takes the foundation of cognitive-behavior therapy and puts it into a kid-friendly context. Read the opening "Letter to Kids with Anxiety" to your kid. That's what I did, and she was hooked.

I can attest first-hand that the authors' methods of dealing with situational or specific anxiety in children works. My oldest son, now 14, had many fears, including thunderstorms and severe separation anxiety. We tried traditional "talk" therapy for many years with several different therapists, with no success. We finally found a cognitive therapist who was able to work with him with great success. My middle son has recently been in therapy with Elizabeth Spencer to handle anxiety about sleeping away from home, a problem he continued to have despite talk therapy with three different therapists. Elizabeth was able to get to the meat of my son's anxiety, help him understand why his brain was reacting the way it was, and what to do to overcome it. I'm please to report we had our last appointment today, and my son has had a summer of successful sleepovers and a week-long vacation, all without any anxiety.

I have read many books on anxiety as I have a 12 year old who has suffered with Anxiety for years. This book was by far the most useful, and well thought out. It gives you detailed information on what causes anxiety. It also gives you lots of infomation on the different solutions: When to seek professional help, what different medicines do. It includes specific tips to help your child. The use of the Dragon (Your Anxieties) and the Wizard (the smart guy that can help you overcome them) helped explain in my son's terms the feelings he as been having. Its like the light bulb went off for him. The journal keeping has been a huge help to him as he tackles his dragon. This book is a must have for parents of children suffering from Anxiety.

Chanting Down Babylon is a welcomed addition to the growing literature on Rastafari. This reader sucessfully brings together most of the scholars studying Rastafari, as well as Rastafarians themselves, providing an important insight into Rastafari. The inclusion of articles addressing biblical hermeneutics as well as Rastafari theology begins to fill an important gap in Rastafari scholarship. A real treasure for those interested in learning about Rastafari for the first time, and for those who wish to expand their knowledge of this important religious movement.

A fantastic, factual account on rastafari.

This book is certainly one of the most unusual I've ever read. Step by step an intriguing and compelling story unfolds itself until in the end the line between reality and the inexplicable vanishes. The reader has to be prepared to let go and to get involved in a story about love and insanity, murder and justice, the shadows of the past and, finally, hope. The rich and inventive language of the author makes this read a real treat and I can only highly recommend this novel to everybody who enjoys to read a book that demands something from the reader as well as offers a few hours of excitement. I truly hope that this wasn't the last novel by Matt Spencer!

This is not for the faint-hearted or those with a weak stomach. This is psychological, terrible stuff, about demons within and demons without. It is about coming to terms with your own darkness; about magic, horror and love. It is scary, original and deeply touching. Even if this book wasn't the fascinating story it is, it would be a pure joy to read something by a writer who uses the English language like Mr. Spencer does. He writes cleverly and inventive, and every description paints vivid images in my head.

This book's strongest point is the totally weird ideas the author is constantly throwing at you, and the unique language he uses to express them. You trully feel as though you've been taken to another world, even though the events take place in "real life." The images and characters from "The Drifting Soul" will stay with you long after the final page has been turned, and you'll be left waiting for the next instalment, for surely Mr. Spencer has more plans for Angela Wrecker, and the wicked new world she's just stepped into!

Review Date: 2002-03-08
I was recommended this book by a friend, who knew I liked horror novels, and that I was in the market for something different than the usual horror fare, ala King, Barker, Rice, etc. This book is written very much like a play-by-play description of a very strange dream, which starts out as very surreal and kind of romantic, then bit by bit, turns into a nightmare. Or to be more accurate, there are two stories going on, one that seems to be in the "waking world," and another that feels more like a dream, where most of the true horror plays out. The last 50 or 60 pages contain some of the most vivid, disturbing material I have ever read dealing with the supernatural. For a while, I was wondering where the parallel story was going, but by the end, the author manages to tie everything together nicely. If you are looking for a gruesome, imaginative story with memorable characters, this is for you.

I just finished reading Inmate 46857 after having met and heard Eddie Spencer in person at a reading conference this week. I cannot imagine someone even younger than me living a life like he described in his book. It was truly through the grace of God that he did not commit murder and his testimony is one that could and should shake up folks who might be headed down the wrong path. I highly recommend having him speak to troubled youth and using his book as a witness to God's power to change people.

What are the repurcussions? Will I, or any one else, get in to trouble following the authors suggestions? Where can I find more information on this subject? Where can I find a lawyer to represent me should I get in to a 'jam' with the "powers that be" by following these ideas? I read this book in l984 and I was amazed. Something which is seemingly so complex is actually quite simple. Mr. Saussy gives the reader an excellent explaination of the intent of the constitutional framers in regard to our money system and to the honesty which such a system produces. For years I wondered about Mr. Saussy and only tonight I learned that he has returned and he has written a new non-fiction book for his audience. F. Tupper Saussy has returned and freedom lovers have an important symbol back! Read this book if you can.

Ms. Spencer has done it again! She's created a fast-paced story with wonderful characters. I love how the mighty Sebastian meets his match with Lily. This is definitely another keeper!

Mistress on His Terms is an exciting and captivating romance. The characters are fully delineated and so true. The plot is developed skillfully. And what descriptions of scenery, storms, the mansion and grounds, delicious meals best of all the exquisite lovemaking. This book is a master piece of sensuality.

The main plot of Lily and Sebaastian's romance thwarted by her misunderstood history is like a mystery revealed.

This is the best of Catherine Spencer's many fine romances. I am really excited about her next novel due in December!

A surprisingly good book. Better than I thought.

The actual plot of this book is that Lily is the biological daughter of Hugo, Sebastian's stepfather. After her parents die, Lily finds out that the man she had thought to be her father was actually her adopted father and that Hugo lives on the other side of the country. She goes to visit and doesn't get off to a great start with Sebastian. He is a lawyer who feels deeply loyal to his stepfather and is suspicious of Lily's motives. Nonetheless, they feel attracted to each other and even after they consummate their attraction there are obstacles to overcome.

Sebastian seems like a jerk in the beginning but when he starts to feel helpless towards his feelings for Lily he becomes more human. Especially when he tries to persuade Lily to not take tests to see if she may be eligible for a kidney donor when Natalie, their mutual sister might need one. He says its because he loves her too much and can't handle losing her on top of losing his sister. Talk about keeping it in the family and all but he is really crazy about Lily.

Another good addition to the peach girl series. Though the books seem to be getting progressively less realistic, they're still fun.

Peach Girl #6 is one of the best books in the series. I got it before I got Book 5, and 4, and I still understood it!

It begins with Momo, waking up in a hotel room with Goro. he tells her they did the deed, and she doesn't believe him. Meaniwhile, Toji is runnning to the rescue. And MEANWHILE, Sae is there for the whole thing. I won't spoil it for you, don't worry! This volume is VERY dramatic, with a LOT of TLC from toji to Momo, and a LOT of unbelieveable things Sae has done. You will NOT BELIEVE how complex her plan was. This book may not be for everyone. It has some verbal profanity, and at the end there's something....distasteful. But the end is a super-duper cliffhanger....But it's an amazing book!

Momo wakes up in a hotel room to find herself naked and with a man...and not just any man (certainly not her own man Toji), it's Goro, beautiful boy, model, and boyfriend of Sae...and it looks like he's gone all the way with her. As if being taken advantage of is bad enough, but suddenly the door burst open and in comes Toji, Kiley, and the school nurse Misao. Toji attacks Goro for all its worth and Misao comforts Momo, who doesn't know if she has lost her virginity or not but feels ashamed nonetheless.

At Misao's home Toji admits that he and Sae were in bed together kissing, but it stopped when he realized that she wasn't Momo. Kiley brings up the fact that it all seems too convenient, Sae being in his bed and Goro trying to bed with Momo. He believes they were the victims of a set up and decides to launch the ultimate revenge on Sae...to give her a taste of her own medicine, with Toji and Momo's help.

This manga just slipped from teen rating into adult, in my personal opinion. I mean, come on, a friend tries to get revenge on her friend by convincing her boyfriend to date rape her? And what's worse, in order to get back at her they hire an actor to make her think the same has happened to her? It seems that this is not something that Momo would go through with... I mean, sure she might get her revenge, but not by making Sae think she had been raped... just as she had for a while... Overall though, it's still a very good read, but this scenario made it fall a little short of perfect, in my opinion... I still plan on reading the story, but now I feel as if I need to expect the plot to be unbelievable, whereas it seemed entirely plausible before.

In the last volume you were left off with Momo waking up in a hotel room, not knowing where she was or how she got there, and finding Goro (a super hot model that is head over heals for sae: a vicious copier of Momo that only tries to steal every happy thing in Momo's life). In this volume, Momo is scared to death at the thought that she might have been "deflowered" by Goro. With the help of Kiley, they figure out that Sae is behind it all. Kiley has thought up a clever plan to get revenge against Sae, and all works out fine until something very wrong happens. I won't give away the ending but this is a book you surely don't want to miss.

When we last saw Momo, she woke up naked in supermodel Goro's room to him asking, "Are you happy Momo? I gave you what you wanted." In volume six of Peach Girl, the big question is, Did he or didn't he?, then What to do next?
As Toji runs to Momo's rescue, he luckily runs into (or rather, is run over by) Kiley and Nurse Misao. Putting aside the immediate question of why are Kiley and Nurse Misao driving together at 1AM, they rush into the hotel room where Goro is holding Momo, and the drama begins. With help from Misao's words of wisdom and comfort and Kiley's conniving brain, Momo and Toji are able to piece together what has happend during the night. Once the stories are cleared up, Kiley is at his all time best, pointing out that when dealing with Sae, head on approaches are futile; the best way to deal with her is to take revenge.
This volume of Peach Girl is full of more drama than comedy. However, the comedy made me (literally) laugh out loud. There is some verbal profanity in this volume, so some more sensitive readers may be offended. The sexual references that are common with Peach Girl are discussed frankly, including a shocking yet funny image of Sae closing the story. All in all, this is the Peach Girl you know and have come to love, only this time Miwa Ueda is not holding back.
