This is a good all-around tractor book with a lot of historical tidbits about different makes of tractors. If you are interested in one particular brand/style etc..., this may not be the book for you. If you simply like tractors, and enjoy learning reading general information about antique tractors, then this is a good addition to your book collection. It offers information on a few interesting and not so typical tractor types.

Well researched. Wished I'd had it when I got started!

Mr. Yost has done a fine job in researching, exhibiting and explaining the antique tractor hobby. So many details from "why should I be involved in the hobby?" to trailering your newly restored tractor to that favorite show are covered. He answers many of the questions most of us have learned the hard way and does it in such a way as to inspire, rather than to alarm. The book reaches out to one comtemplating the hobby of antique tractor restoration like a friendly, helping hand and performs as a lantern, guiding one through the other wise dark and mysterious avenues sometimes associated with the hobby. Mr. Yosts book is as essential a tool for the beginner, or those of us who have "been there, done that", as that old dog curled next to the shop stove and our grandfather's words of wisdom echoing in our mind as we scrape, clean, bang and paint these loveable machines which are our agricultural heritage. Three cheers for Mr. Yost!

This is a good all-round reference for restoring antique tractors. You expect a good discussion of "how-to" information on restoring old tractors. The book has that and many illustrations to help you understand particular repair techniques. Yost has included useful tips on nearly every page. These tips cut to the heart of the topic he's explaining. He also has a useful section on how to choose and operate your old machinery. A section on shows, demonstrations and pulls helps you find a way to show off your new pride and joy. Among the more useful information is a good section on further specialized references for particular tractor brands, and several pages listing parts sources for old machinery. Old-timers in the restoration business will appreciate the references, while beginners will benefit from basic explanations that more technical manuals assume you already know.

The book to buy before you buy the tractor!

Whether you're a seasoned mechanic or a neophyte who doesn't know which end of the wrench to hold, Spencer Yost's Antique Tractor Bible is a comprehensive guide to buying, using and restoring antique tractors. There is enough information here, so even if you don't intend to do your own work, you'll know how things are done and why. Additionally, the author shows how to use your antique tractor and equipment. This book is not model-specific, and the author touches on many different tractors. This is a major new resource work that will become indispensable to antique tractor owners. I wish the photographs were in color, which is a minor complaint in light of the wealth of information presented.

I think Catherine Spencer is a great writer, and I usually try to get all her books. She has always maintained a high standard in her writing.
While this story is reasonably good, I do not think it is up to her usual standard. I find that when the editors ask a number of authors to follow a theme it tends to fall flat, never mind how good an author is.

Awesome! A must read!

The main story line takes place in a romantic setting somewhere in Italy, gotta love the Italian culture! But it's a jumbled mess for this one headstrong nurse because her sister refuses to let her ex-husband see his baby, and sends her in her place when he threatens to flex his parental rights. Lots of drama happen, like them inevitably falling in love, but her sister messes up any happiness they had at one point.. and you'll have to read it to find out why! Had me laughing and crying!

Another Great Book

Catherine Spencer has produced another winner with The Brabant Baby. Vivid, likeable characters sustain reader empathy as they logically and maturely work their way through the conflicts threatening their relationship. Great writing, a keen sense of place, and wonderful story telling set this book apart from the crowd. The hero's tenderness with the baby makes both the heroine and the reader fall in love with him. This author is still able to bring a fresh voice to romance novels.

Gabriel Brabanti figures his ex-wife, Marcia is up to something when she willing sends their daughter to Malta with her cousin, Eve Caldwell.

Marcia soured Gabriel on the ideas of ever marrying again. Instead he will use any and all means to reste little Nicola away from an unloving mother.

Eve is caught in the middle. Knowing what her cousin is like [and yet not really knowing] and leary with the warning that Marcia gave her about Gabriel.

Something about little Nicola is not right. Which raises a bunch of questions.

But, ah well, Eve and Gabriel develope a deep sexual attraction to each other, unwillingly at first, and then they seduce each other.

After a bit of a rigomarole she gets pregnant and is able to offer a Brabanti heir. After the dibilitating shock of Marcia showing up to take Nicola home. [not necessarily in that order].

It is a well written story with enough interest in the baby to hold it together - strong characters - colorful scenes etc.

A first class read all around

Really good with a neat twist on the secret baby theme. Catherine Spencer pulls the reader into this emotional story from the very first line, and doesn't let go.

There's bad blood between Gabriel Brabanti and his ex-wife, Marcia, but he can't cut her out of his life completely because they have a baby daughter who was born after the couple split up. But he wants to meet his child, and rather than have him show up and cause trouble in New York where she now lives, Marcia agrees to have the baby visit him in Malta, where Gabriel lives. Instead of facing him herself though, she sends the baby with her cousin Eve. Having been warned that he's nasty piece of work, Eve doesn't expect a warm welcome from Gabriel, but she's willing to put up with him for the sake of the baby. But things don't turn out quite the way she expected. Gabriel is very charming and attentive to her, and very devoted to his baby, and before long Eve finds herself falling in love with him. When he asks her to marry him, she thinks she's the luckiest woman in the world, and figures that, as usual, her cousin had exaggerated when she'd claimed her ex was a control freak who'd go to any lengths to get his own way. But then, with a ring on her finger and her wedding coming up, Eve discovers her cousin wasn't so wrong, after all. Gabriel has a plan to permanently keep the baby away from his ex-wife and he's using Eve to do it. Determined not to let him get away with it, Eve contacts her cousin and tells her what's in the works. At that point, Marcia comes racing over to Malta to rescue her baby and play her trump card which not only sinks Gabriel's plans, but also destroys his relationship with Eve. When this happened, I really didn't think anything could save Gabriel and Eve. Finding out how they finally made their way back to each other kept me glued to this book until the very last page.

Gabriel was a fabulous alpha hero, very sexy and powerful. But Eve's a real modern woman, not one of those old-fashioned heroines you find in some books, and she was perfect for him. Also, the scenes of Malta were great. It was like I was there and could see everything the author talked about. A first class read all round.

A very entertaining read, although not personally one of my Spencer favorites. The characters of Allison and Lee will appeal to strong, independent women who have been burned by love, and yet remain optimistic about romance. While the male lead characters, in my opinion, could have been examined more in depth, the end result is a pleasant enough romance.

There are times when I am in the mood for a good romance - nothing complicated about it. This is one of those books! Two stories make up this one book - and though they are similar being from the heart, the stories are of different situations. "Forsaking All Others" is about female photographer that has been used by a previous male model turned lover and is now having difficulties trusting "anything that wears pants." But she has to work with them due to her profession. Are they all users or is there one out there that doesn't just love himself? "A Promise to Cherish" is about a business woman that is having a difficult time making a go of it in a male's world. She picks up the wrong suitcase in the airport putting herself in an ackward situation when she meets the owner of it. Both stories are on learning to trust others and opening up your heart even if there is a chance of it being heart. The risk is worth it. They are one night reads to enjoy! Of course, you can't help but enjoy with LaVryle Spencer being the author!

This is a wonderful book! If you only want one book on dried floral arranging this is the one to have. Whether you are just starting out or have been doing floral crafts for years, this book offers plenty of projects (over 90) to create or to be inspired by and in typical Leisure Arts fashion, each project is beautifully illustrated with colored photographs of both the projects and the step-by-step instructions.

Review Date: 2005-04-13
Having majors in both the natural and social sciences, I can honestly say this is a very unprofessionally written text for just a single reason. There are constant, in-text, one-sided diatribes between the "first author" and the "third author." The third author is the ever-lovable Lois Fichner-Rathus who is married to the first author. The problem is that this woman takes numerous opportunities to slam males and masculinity throughout the text (without any similar asides from the male authors).

One section I remember in a not-so-fond manner is where the "third author" rants about how men can't help but be competitive, even with animals, on page 119. On page 23, there is a footnote that reads, "The first and second authors of this text [males] point out that it is not necessarily advantageous for females to have the ability to discriminate duds from winners. The third author confesses that she wishes she had had that capacity years ago."

The book also presents rather one sided views of topics like circumcision. In the book, they describe how, in uncircumcised males, "smegma--a cheeselike, foul-smelling secretion--may accumulate below the prepuce, causing the foreskin to adhere to the glans." (110) The text neglects the fact that smegma naturally occurs in females as well around the clitoral hood with improper hygiene. If they had mentioned this, would it be grounds for supporting clitoradectomy? They then cite data from a Wiswell study concerning penile cancer, and UTI's and declare that circumcision "lessens" these risks. The problem is that the data in that study was actually correlational because the circumcision (as an I.V.) was not controlled by the experimenter, rather, the observations were made ex-post facto where factors like poverty determined who was circumcised. This introduces the possibility that significant differences (monetary, hygiene, education, etc) existed between the subjects. Don't they know that correlation doesn't imply causation?

I liked one comment the third author made in the childbirth section on page 364. She describes how the obstetrician invited her husband to cut the umbilical cord and she "seized the scissors and cut the umbilical cord herself." She asks, 'who gave the obstetrician the right to determine who would cut the umbilical cord!' Heck, I'm amazed she let her husband have the privilege of sleeping with her to conceive the child in the first place. He's lucky she even bothered to take, er, append her husband's last name onto hers.

I don't mind a book with humor, but when the humor makes certain readers feel like they are under siege with every new page, then it no longer serves the usual purpose of conveying information.

Besides that, the book is ultra-thorough. It covers sexuality on biological, moral, psychological, and sociological levels. It is almost too thorough to make for engaging reading for someone interested in a single aspect of sexuality, but this also makes it adaptable for use in many fields of study.

Excellent text book for students in Human sexuality

When they burned down the library at Alexandria, The excuse was if it is in the Koran than we already have it; if it is not, then we do not need it. What was true for them is true for us; if it is not in this book, then we do not need it. Or as Ed McMahon would say on the Johnny Carson Show "everything there is to know is in this book"

I will not give you a blow by blow description of all the features in this book, as it would weigh as much as the book. Let's say it covers everything you need to get off the ground or expand your existing knowledge. One usually overlooked feature that is well covered is [Connecting Using ODBC (with Microsoft Access)]. What I really want to do is tie this back to my Unix applications, as this is the only program I use that is not UNIX at this time. My best guess is that AutoCAD can not afford to keep their UNIX experts. That is no excuse for lack of information in this book. So five stars for coverage of almost everything and minus one for lack of UNIX information.

The writing is very well done with a good amount of "How & Why" information. New Riders has been my preferred choice for learning various software programs since the late 70's and early 80's and this book reflect the depth of their knowledge. I highly recommend this as the at the workstation book to buy. The CD that comes with the book is not ready for prime time. I found many errors with both the content and format of the disk. I even had problems installing and reading it with my computer, but the book more than make up for this flaw.

In the genre of mystery thrillers, this book reminds me of the earliest works of authors like Cussler and Trevanian, whose later books became best sellers. The nuances provided by the author, as a scientist in the field of viral gene therapies, gave this book plausabilty and reality. This is a must read for people who enjoy books that provoke and teach at the same time. Find out how close we are to decimating ourselves!

I have never actually met Henry Spencer, despite having spent years at a Taddle Creek lab probably a stone's throw from the University of Toronto zoology department; I don't even really know what he did in Zoology, but I do know that right from the very beginning of my life online, Henry Spencer was there like a kindly grandfather, always patient, always helpful and always knowledgeable beyond our wildest imaginations. When google was collecting up parts to assemble their groups.google.com, it was Henry who provided many of the earliest archives dating back to the late 1980's (and preserving forever some of my more embarrasing novice posts ;) -- that name on the cover is more than a good sign, it's a veritable holographic guarantee of authenticity.

Since I already had a Linux box that was not doing much of anything, I loaded INN (since it comes nicely packaged with Red Hat- although you need to install the security patch as well). I then needed a quick understanding of how Usenet/INN worked and did not have a lot of time to spend on it. This book gave me everything I need, I did not have to go anywhere else for information.

What I like about this book is that it truly teaches parents how to parent in a way that helps children access an internalized sense of right and wrong. It seems like children today, because of our society's lack of social limits, have a shallow sense of right and wrong. There is a difference between not doing something because you will get caught and not doing something because you know that it is wrong.

This technique helps parents communicate in a clear and effective manner what they feel about a situation and attempt to get the child to internalize it. In other words, it teaches parents to help the child become their own parent.

I have used this series of books in my private practice to help clients learn to parent, as well as how to communicate with others. It is well worth reading.

I purchased this book after reading "The One Minute Manager." I was skeptical about how any significant parenting advice could be contained in such a small volume. Still, since the read would be easy and quick, I decided to try it. I was pleasantly surprised!

Johnson does an excellent job of applying the basic principles of One Minute management to the parent/child relationship. In his typical parable style, he describes the One Minute Reprimand, the One Minute Praising, and the One Minute Goal. His depiction of the results with the Father's children is sickeningly sweet and overly dramatic, but he makes his point.

For any father who has read "The One Minute Manager," I encourage him to read this book also. It will truly give new, valuable insights into being a better dad. Buy it and see for yourself!

The ideal gift for any parent

This book and the concepts it shares with the One Minute (Manager) Series are the basis for the way I am raising my daughter. Manage behavior and unconditionally love the child. It works for parenting, management, and even marital relations. This book puts the principles of the One Minute Manager in the natural context of the parent child relationship. It is a gem of a book. I have given several copies to friends, employees, and in 1992 to my (then) future wife. Not only did I give her the book, I recorded it on cassette in my voice for her to study. She did. We have now (5/2000) been happily "Catching each other doing things right" for over 7 years as husband and wife. In the same way, we have harnessed the incredible power of One Minute style praising and reprimanding our daughter with fantastic results.

( Comment as of 2008:
I still give this and other One Minute books to friends and co-workers, often the Japanese language editions. I still stand by every word of this review. And I still believe this series provides an excellent mental framework for dealing with the stresses of parenting, managing, and being a spouse. --Walter, Japan, April 2008 -- )

Simple and easy and VERY practical.

Spencer Johnson always does a good job of breaking an idea down to some key components that can then be built upon to create a positive outcome. I was skeptical of "The One Minute Father" as most people seem to be about all of the One Minute Ideas. Don't let the title fool you. By using the common sense approach to discipling your children, you will eliminate the negative time to small points in time while giving you the opportunity to spend a great deal of time in a positive and rewarding relationship with your child(ren). This is a must read for any parent. The things that we often know but won't believe are possible are possible. I have started following the advice given in this book more regulary and I can already see one of my children turning the corner in how she sees herself and her actions and how the two are not necessarily the same.
Give this book as a gift to yourself and anyone else you know willing to learn how to be a better, happier and more successful parent.
