The Brabanti Baby - Catherine SpencerReview Date: 2005-10-24
While this story is reasonably good, I do not think it is up to her usual standard. I find that when the editors ask a number of authors to follow a theme it tends to fall flat, never mind how good an author is.
Awesome! A must read!Review Date: 2005-09-28

GOOD AND EASY READ -- EXPECTING!Review Date: 2005-06-21
Marcia soured Gabriel on the ideas of ever marrying again. Instead he will use any and all means to reste little Nicola away from an unloving mother.
Eve is caught in the middle. Knowing what her cousin is like [and yet not really knowing] and leary with the warning that Marcia gave her about Gabriel.
Something about little Nicola is not right. Which raises a bunch of questions.
But, ah well, Eve and Gabriel develope a deep sexual attraction to each other, unwillingly at first, and then they seduce each other.
After a bit of a rigomarole she gets pregnant and is able to offer a Brabanti heir. After the dibilitating shock of Marcia showing up to take Nicola home. [not necessarily in that order].
It is a well written story with enough interest in the baby to hold it together - strong characters - colorful scenes etc.
A first class read all aroundReview Date: 2005-02-28
There's bad blood between Gabriel Brabanti and his ex-wife, Marcia, but he can't cut her out of his life completely because they have a baby daughter who was born after the couple split up. But he wants to meet his child, and rather than have him show up and cause trouble in New York where she now lives, Marcia agrees to have the baby visit him in Malta, where Gabriel lives. Instead of facing him herself though, she sends the baby with her cousin Eve. Having been warned that he's nasty piece of work, Eve doesn't expect a warm welcome from Gabriel, but she's willing to put up with him for the sake of the baby. But things don't turn out quite the way she expected. Gabriel is very charming and attentive to her, and very devoted to his baby, and before long Eve finds herself falling in love with him. When he asks her to marry him, she thinks she's the luckiest woman in the world, and figures that, as usual, her cousin had exaggerated when she'd claimed her ex was a control freak who'd go to any lengths to get his own way. But then, with a ring on her finger and her wedding coming up, Eve discovers her cousin wasn't so wrong, after all. Gabriel has a plan to permanently keep the baby away from his ex-wife and he's using Eve to do it. Determined not to let him get away with it, Eve contacts her cousin and tells her what's in the works. At that point, Marcia comes racing over to Malta to rescue her baby and play her trump card which not only sinks Gabriel's plans, but also destroys his relationship with Eve. When this happened, I really didn't think anything could save Gabriel and Eve. Finding out how they finally made their way back to each other kept me glued to this book until the very last page.
Gabriel was a fabulous alpha hero, very sexy and powerful. But Eve's a real modern woman, not one of those old-fashioned heroines you find in some books, and she was perfect for him. Also, the scenes of Malta were great. It was like I was there and could see everything the author talked about. A first class read all round.

One section I remember in a not-so-fond manner is where the "third author" rants about how men can't help but be competitive, even with animals, on page 119. On page 23, there is a footnote that reads, "The first and second authors of this text [males] point out that it is not necessarily advantageous for females to have the ability to discriminate duds from winners. The third author confesses that she wishes she had had that capacity years ago."
The book also presents rather one sided views of topics like circumcision. In the book, they describe how, in uncircumcised males, "smegma--a cheeselike, foul-smelling secretion--may accumulate below the prepuce, causing the foreskin to adhere to the glans." (110) The text neglects the fact that smegma naturally occurs in females as well around the clitoral hood with improper hygiene. If they had mentioned this, would it be grounds for supporting clitoradectomy? They then cite data from a Wiswell study concerning penile cancer, and UTI's and declare that circumcision "lessens" these risks. The problem is that the data in that study was actually correlational because the circumcision (as an I.V.) was not controlled by the experimenter, rather, the observations were made ex-post facto where factors like poverty determined who was circumcised. This introduces the possibility that significant differences (monetary, hygiene, education, etc) existed between the subjects. Don't they know that correlation doesn't imply causation?
I liked one comment the third author made in the childbirth section on page 364. She describes how the obstetrician invited her husband to cut the umbilical cord and she "seized the scissors and cut the umbilical cord herself." She asks, 'who gave the obstetrician the right to determine who would cut the umbilical cord!' Heck, I'm amazed she let her husband have the privilege of sleeping with her to conceive the child in the first place. He's lucky she even bothered to take, er, append her husband's last name onto hers.
I don't mind a book with humor, but when the humor makes certain readers feel like they are under siege with every new page, then it no longer serves the usual purpose of conveying information.
Besides that, the book is ultra-thorough. It covers sexuality on biological, moral, psychological, and sociological levels. It is almost too thorough to make for engaging reading for someone interested in a single aspect of sexuality, but this also makes it adaptable for use in many fields of study.

The title says it all.Review Date: 2001-05-21
I will not give you a blow by blow description of all the features in this book, as it would weigh as much as the book. Let's say it covers everything you need to get off the ground or expand your existing knowledge. One usually overlooked feature that is well covered is [Connecting Using ODBC (with Microsoft Access)]. What I really want to do is tie this back to my Unix applications, as this is the only program I use that is not UNIX at this time. My best guess is that AutoCAD can not afford to keep their UNIX experts. That is no excuse for lack of information in this book. So five stars for coverage of almost everything and minus one for lack of UNIX information.

The One Minute ReviewReview Date: 2006-04-17
This technique helps parents communicate in a clear and effective manner what they feel about a situation and attempt to get the child to internalize it. In other words, it teaches parents to help the child become their own parent.
I have used this series of books in my private practice to help clients learn to parent, as well as how to communicate with others. It is well worth reading.

Pleasantly Surprised!Review Date: 2003-02-08
Johnson does an excellent job of applying the basic principles of One Minute management to the parent/child relationship. In his typical parable style, he describes the One Minute Reprimand, the One Minute Praising, and the One Minute Goal. His depiction of the results with the Father's children is sickeningly sweet and overly dramatic, but he makes his point.
For any father who has read "The One Minute Manager," I encourage him to read this book also. It will truly give new, valuable insights into being a better dad. Buy it and see for yourself!

( Comment as of 2008:
I still give this and other One Minute books to friends and co-workers, often the Japanese language editions. I still stand by every word of this review. And I still believe this series provides an excellent mental framework for dealing with the stresses of parenting, managing, and being a spouse. --Walter, Japan, April 2008 -- )
