A Life-changing hidden pearl of a book!

When I first read this book in the seventies, it literally blew my mind and opened up new worlds for me: the unique transformative power and deeper spiritual dimensions of man-woman love; a world view by a man who deeply understands mathematics, philosophy and science and points the way out of the narrow cultural paradigm we live in to the boundless expanse of the Spirit; the way our culture, tracing back primarily to the Greek and Hebrew cultures, was misdirected from the start by orienting itself on the male principle alone, and how this basic flaw is an important contributor to our headlong rush to self-destruction; the tricks reductionist philosphy and science play to conceal how we ourselves have narrowed down our world. And, last but not least: gripping, thought-provoking poetry which leads us to an intuitive understanding of these same truths.
Now after 25 years I have re-read it and gotten even more out of it than the first time! A hidden pearl of a book which I am gong to give many people I love to help them open up their perspectives.

The Other Missouri History: Populists, Prostitutes, And Regular Folk explores Missouri history and its effects on all levels of society. A variety of essays by learned authors include "Race, Citizenship, and the Origins of Organized Labor in Antebellum St. Louis", "Survival Strategies of Farm Laborers in the Missouri Bootheel, 1900-1958", and "Prostitution and Reform in Kansas City, 1880-1930". Written with a keen knack for detail and explaining complex socio-economic fluctuations in plain terms, The Other Missouri History is a welcome contribution to state history collections especially for its revelation of the side of Missouri most traditional historical accounts overlook.

Snooker Champion - John Spencer - Autbiography

JOHN SPENCER'S NAME IS SYNONYMOUS WITH the halcyon days of snooker in this country.
Along with his friend and rival Ray Reardon, he helped to popularise the sport to such an extent that in the 1970s it became one of the UK's top televised sports, attracting millions of viewers for the major championships. Spencer was born into a poor working class family in Radcliffe, Manchester on June 18, 1935 with the country still suffering the aftermath of the economic slumps of the 1920s and 30s and plunging headlong into the Second World War.
As a youngster, he spent his formative years growing up in the shadow of the conflict. At the age of 15 he took up snooker, a game for which he had a rare gift, and was soon making century-plus breaks, but his National Service intervened and he gave up the game for over ten years. His appetite for snooker never diminished however, and in 1963 he entered the English Amateur Championships, reaching the final before being beaten by Reardon. He was runner-up again the following year before finally claiming the title in 1966 by beating Marcus Owen. He then went to Karachi to compete in the World Amateur Championships, where he lost to Marcus's brother Gary in the final.
Gary Owen, Reardon and Spencer then turned professional, the first new professionals in the sport since 1951, marking the beginning of the modern era for snooker. At the 1969 World Championships Spencer gained his revenge on Owen to win the first of his three World titles and begin a domination of the sport by himself and Reardon that was to last the best part of a decade. Reardon triumphed over Spencer in the 1970 semi-finals, but Spencer was to claim his title back by beating Warren Simpson the following November in Australia in what were the de facto 1971 championships. Beaten by Alex Higgins in the 1972 final, he did not claim his third and last World title until 1977, when he won the inaugural event at the Crucible, a place which has since become the home of the World Championship. However, during this period he won several other tournaments, including the Norwich Union Open Championship (twice), the Benson and Hedges Masters and the Benson and Hedges Irish Master. But it was his role in the legendary Friday night television programme Pot Black which catapulted him into the nation's consciousness.
He won the Pot Black title on no less than three occasions, in 1970, 1971 and 1976, and his celebrity status was assured. Double vision affected his play by the end of the 1970s and he won his final title, the Holsten Lager International, in 1979, although he did reach the quarterfinals of the British Open in 1987. He became a popular broadcaster noted for his intelligent commentary and dry wit, and, moreover, his popularity within the sport saw him spend six years as chairman of the sport's governing body, the WPBSA, from 1990. But perhaps the defining moment in Spencer's life occurred on May 9, 1985 at the Pontins tournament in Prestatyn when the double vision problems, which he had been experiencing sporadically for the best part of ten years, became much worse. He was diagnosed with the rare condition Myasthenia Gravis and it is a condition with which he has to live with for the rest of his life. Out of the Blue, Into the Black is John Spencer's own story of his struggle with Myasthenia Gravis, his early life of poverty in wartime Manchester, his magnificent snooker career and his memories of the men who he played alongside.
A rare glimpse of a golden era in British sport is accompanied by Spencer's observations on the way the game has developed since his retirement. Painfully honest, funny and, at times, sad - this is the account one man's journey from greatness through to the unknown and the brink of tragedy.

This book is AWESOME, a wonderful story about making new friends and fitting in. In the story Owen has to make some tough choices and the reader gets to choose with Owen. Each path shows the reader the consequences of their choice.
A beautifully written and illustrated book about real life situations. I can't wait for the next in the series!

True Spy Story

This book is a fictionalized story about a real spy for England during the Second World War. It begins when Chris is a child whose family is friends with Winston Churchill, not yet Prime Minister. Churchill befriends him on a visit, and later asks him to visit a school friend in Europe whose father is connected to the Nazis. His task is to discover when the Nazis are planning to invade Poland(?). His contribution impresses Churchill, who continues to use him as a spy through adulthood. The story is about his adventures. It was easy to read, and fascinating to read about a real child spy.
I recommend it for readers who like to learn about history but don't want to wade through textbook-like tomes. And for people who like spy novels. Or for people who enjoy biographies. And lots of other people, just because it is so fascinating.

Dr. Spencers book is a classic. It is the fruit of a most faithful ministry, richly blessed by the Holy Spirit. He was a very gifted man, especially in the area of personal conversation, where he combined a deep understanding of the Word of God with a profound psychological and pastoral perception. He had the habit at the end of each day to make detailed notes of his pastoral conversations. Therefore, after more than twenty years, he was able to publish two volumes of the most instructive, remarkable and wonderful stories, all 'real life'. There's no comparable book in this area.
I heartily recommend it. Very instructive for ministers and seminary students. The author firmly believed in the Bible as the Word of God. The principles laid down in reformed confessions such as the Westminster Confession, he brought to life in his ministry in a most constructive way.

What did you do with your eyes?" This significant question came from a young relative recently, to whom I was describing the days when radio provided the bulk of home entertainment. I tried to explain how words and voices could stimulate the imagination, and how excellent some writers, actors and producers were at providing these entertainments.
Notable examples in this genre were to be heard on the BBC during the years 1938 to 1969, written by crime writer Francis Durbridge. His sleuth was a writer and amateur detective Paul Temple, ably supported by his charming wife Steve. Each case, serialized in half-hour episodes, presented the Temples investigating murder cases. The formula comprised frequent changes of scene and situation, danger, fast cars, dry martinis, meetings at lonely places, and the frequent appearance of a significant clue such as a gramophone record or a cocktail stirrer.
Playing the principal parts throughout what survives of the series were the highly accomplished and versatile actors Peter Coke and Marjorie Westbury. Adding to the magic provided by the voices and the sound effects was the theme music, "Coronation Scott" by Vivian Ellis.
"The Spencer Affair" is one of the best of the series. I was happy to acquire it recently in a new CD reissue. In whatever format, this makes ideal entertainment, nowadays recommended for long car journeys, sleepless nights, or nostalgia buffs.
