A thin line between love and hate.....

This is the first book by Lavyrle Spencer that I've ever read. I'm a long time romance reader, but I incorrectly got the impression that Spencer's work was "old". I remember seeing a book of hers that my grandma was reading when I was in Jr High. The image stuck with me, so I haven't until now, given her the "respect" that she so obviously deserves.

Hummingbird was so many things.....It was very funny yet it dealt with serious emotions. It was very fictional yet it also felt very real. I really can't say enough about it.

I'm not going to rehash the plot but I'll give you my two cents on what I loved about this book.
1. The witty bantering and fighting that exists between Abigail and Jesse is some of the funniest and best that I've ever read. They truly dislike each other at times....or at least it seemed that way.....
2. Jesse is a hero I love because he brings out the very best, and worst, of Abigail. He encourages her to be herself and not what her parents and the town expects her to be. Her gradual liberation is so good to see.
3. The love triangle between Jesse, Abigail, and Mark was the low point of the book. It really wasn't a triangle at all...there was no contest...Abigail and Jesse were destined to be.

Read this book....despite the fact that your grandma may have read it!
IT IS TIMELESS!

My favorite historical romance author! She'll be yours, too!

Hummingbird is one of those rare books that can be read again and again and still enjoy it as much as the first time. Lavyrle Spencer has the unique talent of drawing the reader into the story with characters that you laugh at, cry for, and fall in love with. This is my personal favorite, but every one of her books are wonderful! Trail To Destiny: A Novel

I just can't leave this book alone! I read it long ago, saw it once in a used book sale at the library and didn't buy it. Then I came across it again this week at a thrift store. I grabbed it this time. I rarely knowingly re-read a book, this is an exception. Like one of the other reviewers said I am ready to start reading it again as soon as I finish. It was so perfect, I guess we would all alike to think that's the way true love can work out.
This one is a keeper for sure.

There's some truly great writing in this book. I love how Spencer weaves words. Abigail and Jesse are hilarious together, as are David and Abigail after David returns to find her more straight-forward with surprising manners! Since there are so many positive reviews on here, I'll discuss some things I didn't like (though don't get me wrong, I love this book!). Spoiler alert!:

1. The situation with David seeing Abigail sleeping with Jesse was never resolved. What was David's reason to forgive her? Did he really accept that they had just slept together, or bought her weak, unexplained excuses of, "It's not how it looked!" The former couldn't possibly be true, because later in the book he demands to know if there was something between she and Jesse. That part was confusing!

2. As other readers have said, the kiss-at-gunpoint (more than just kissing, though) felt a little off to me. Jesse is so wonderful in so many ways, but it felt a little too close to rape for my taste.

3. Spencer tends to over dramatize at times -- it seems that Abigail is constantly whirling around, clenching her fists, blushing severely, etc, whereas Jesse is always cool and calm as can be, usually giving a "lazy" or "crooked" grin. It gets old.

I suppose this isn't really a review after all, but it's the closest I can get to a book forum where I would love to discuss Spencer's books with others.

In the Hummingbird, Abbie volunteers to take in and care for two men who have been shot on board the train and were brought into her small town to be tended to by the town doctor. David Melcher is the gentleman she always dreamed of marrying, sweet, proper, complimentary however, Jesse is the man she can't stop thinking about. How will she handle having the two of them under her roof and care?

This was my first foray into the romance genre and while in the beginning I was rolling my eyes at the obvious flirting going on, by the end I was certainly rooting for Abbie to end up with one man in particular and I couldn't stop turning the pages until I found out what happened. Everyone needs a good romance novel now and again and I will be sure read more of Ms. Spencer!

I used this book for my therapy group (recovery) - It's great to use with anyone who has trouble living in the moment and may be suffering from regrets and fear. It is simple to read and face it NOT everyone is a great reader, especially in early recovery. I will continue to use it and enjoy it for myself as well, it gave me goosebumps the first time I read it.

This is an amazingly short little book, probably takes 10 - 15 minutes to read. I had checked it out of the library, read it through twice, but decided the truth was so important that I wanted a copy in my collection to remind me occasionally of how important this is. So, yes, I am very appreciative of the message, and feel that it is very important. It calms me greatly when I am stressed or worried about the future or the past.

I can't exactly pinpoint why I didn't LOVE this book. I guess it took a long time for me to start to like Roberta. I thought she was too abrasive at first to Gabe, who was sweet, strong and understanding (a trademark of Spencer's men it seems), but it was still a good story.

Description from the back of book:

The year is 1916. The place is a tiny New England village called Camden - where a newly divorced woman learns that love can be more special the second time around...

When free thinking divorcee Roberta Jewett returns to her hometown of Camden, Maine, she discovers that small-town folk consider a divorced woman little more that a prostitute. Condemned by her mother and scorned by neighbors, she nonetheless perseveres in her struggle to forge a good life for her little girls and herself. Behaving like no "respectable" woman would, she gets a job as a county nurse, learns to drive, and buys her very own Model T. Embittered by her painful marriage to an unfaithful husband, she has no intention of being any man's victim again. So when widowed carpenter Gabriel Farley begins work renovating her house, Roberta's first response to him is blatant resentment. But Gabriel's quiet, vibrant masculinity soon finds a way to soothe Roberta's heart.

And in the ultimate test of will and devotion, she must depend on the man she has grown to love and summon the courage to stand up to the entire town.

* This book was so great. I can't tell you how many times it brought tears to my eyes. I couldn't put it down & it's a definite keeper. The story is wonderful & sad at times but Roberta doesn't let the bad things overrule the life she's worked so hard to keep exciting for her girls. I don't see how anybody wouldn't love this book. I HIGHLY recommend.

This was one of the "newer" novels from Ms. Spencer I read and I was a little hesitant because it was newer..But so far I have read this book TWICE and would read it again in a heartbeat. I always like writers who can pull a reader into the book or novel to the point you see yourself there. That is what happens with this one. I traveled back in time and lived with Roberta and the kids and laughed and cried with them. I would have to say the most enjoyable parts of the book were when Roberta wanted to buy a car (how scandalous!!) and her first driving lesson. This is a love story, but it is also an adventure. Buy this, you will enjoy it.

What a week! First the election and then Endless Love. I read the last page of this beautiful, brilliant novel at 3:30AM. I couldn't give this book 5 stars, not because it wasn't a great story but, there were weak points in the beginning of the book where it was too slow. Its the story of two teenagers in young love who are forced apart when the main character sets his lovers house on fire trying to get her attention after her father tells them that they need to take a break from each other. The boy has to go in a rehabilitation facility and the only thing he can do is think about his love. He becomes obsessed with finding her after he gets out. Against everyone's wishes he goes on a journey to find her and things go terribly wrong. I don't wanna give too much away but, if you have ever been in love or couldn't have something you wanted you might relate to this book about first love.

This book absolutely SLAYS me. I've read it numerous times and it is, in my opinion, a masterpiece of modern fiction. The first sentence reels you in, the last page knocks you dead, and everything in between is so amazing and original, I can't even describe it. Just buy it. By the way, when I first saw a picture of author Scott Spencer, I was astonished that he didn't look a thing like David. But that's how true this book seems.

This is NOT light romantic reading for sissies--and I despise that silly new cover--but if you are a bright person with a good vocabulary, do not miss this book.

I just finished this book a few minutes ago and cannot stop crying. It's not a sappy love story as the title might suggest; it's about obsession, about that one person you could never, ever quite get over, about never losing hope that one day they'll remember how it was to be with you and that maybe they'll come back.
You can't help but root for David throughout the book, even as he (as one reviewer put it) starts making some really bad decisions.
I was tearing up throughout the book, both for David's loss and for his happiness, but the end left me devastated. If you've ever been through this kind of thing, you'll idenitify with this book a lot.
Spencer is a master of words. Amazing.

A fascinating study of first love, young love, and mental disorder. The writing is superb. Author is one of the few who can write long reveries and not bore the reader. The family dynamics were described and studied so well, I was captured by these two tortured, interesting families. David's guilt and sense of responsibility to his mother, Jade's mother, his father, and Jade were overwhelming. Ultimately, love is not enough to overcome serious mental disease. Jade is a charismatic, manipulative person without even fully realizing it. And David lives on a terrible vanity/insecurity seesaw that has no happy medium.

I really love the way Lavyrle Spencer wrote most of her novels--too bad she is retired. Although the subject matter and some content is a bit out-dated in "Separate Beds," I still thoroughly enjoyed this book. I have read it twice and both times I was completely entertained. If you enjoy well-written romance than this is well worth the read.

The story is about a lower middle class college student that gets set up on a blind date with a wealthy (hero) college student. He gets her pregnant during the date and they wind up marrying, with the intention of divorcing after the child is born. The plot is nothing out of the ordinary but Ms. Spencer really knows how to draw the reader in. This is the kind of book that you hate to put down.

After suffering from one horrible paranormal/vampire series to another, I decided to go back to the good ole best selling authors. I'm more of a historical or paranormal romance readers but there are few contemporary novels that I like. A friend of mind suggested this book to me and I gave it a try. I mean why not? What can be worst then the genre I was currently reading?

I have to say it was heaven sent, a breath of fresh air! What a wonderful story and I'm not at all surprise with all the ratings it recieved. I laughed, I cried (I really did!), and at one time my tempers even flared. Seperate Beds is seriously a wonderful story. It's one of those story that can actually happen and when it does, you really do pray for happy ending. This is one of those stories where you can read anytime of the year. Whether it's during the winter, bundled up in your favorite throw tucked in your most comfortable chair or on a hot summer day out in your backyard with a glass of fresh ice tea or strawberry lemonade.

This book will seriously be among my top 10 most favorite romance novels.

This is the first book I have read by this author and I know it is a favorite of many. I read it a couple decades too late and some circumstances and the reactions to those circumstances are a bit out of date now. This book started out with a good plot and realistic reactions to the unexpectant pregnancy. Due to my age, I could actually relate to the time-frame. Initially, I liked both the hero and the heroine and was looking forward to learning how they fell in love.

As the story progressed I became weary of the mind games that Catherine kept playing with Clay. I understand that she was emotionally damaged because of her abusive and alcoholic father and her spineless mother. I think Clay deserved a gold star for sticking with her as long as he did and trying to help her with her problems. She really needed some professional therapy or intervention! Then, toward the end of the book; Catherine suddenly becomes the mature and rational one and Clay becomes the flake. This story had a little too much drama and emotional baggage for me to enjoy.

Emotional Rollercoaster!!!

Spencer is swiftly and surely becoming one of my favorite romance authors! Her ability to craft real and likeable characters surpasses your usual blonde, statuesque, defenseless heroine rescued by savage, rogue-like, insolent-yet debonair-man of the hour types.

This story is one that you won't be able to let go of--not even for a second. You'll want to keep reading each word until the very last page until you can no longer see straight!

There are so many things that go unsaid between Cat and Clay because of their insecurities and Cat's inability to show affection. Clay is so amazing for coaxing Cat's initial responses. He shows her how easy it is to love--how good it feels to give your heart to another without fear, distrust, or doubt. Cat, however, doesn't make this an easy feat for Clay; he practically fights her tooth and nail for a simple sign of affection.

He is the quintessential example of what love should look like. His love for Cat eventually breaks all boundaries between them, even when he has to let her go. And-although it's extremely cliche-their love is "proof" that if you love enough to let it go, it's probable that love will always find its way back to you.

Kudos, Spencer; yet another amazing, can't put it down, my-heart-is-going-to-surely-break kind of read.

I just read an excerpt of from the first page of "I Shall Not Want", by
Julia Spencer Fleming.

All of her books are spell binders, however, this new one takes the suspense up a notch. You can feel the hairs raise on the back of your neck from the deputy sheriff's fear as she faces off against her attacker.
Our favorite characters are back with some new ones added that have the depth we expect from her. Clear your calendars for June 10th when this book becomes available because once you pick it up, you won't be able to put it down until the last page.

When I read the first mystery in the series several years ago, I commented that although it was flawed in several ways, the author had great potential as a writer. She seems to have finally come into her own with this addition to the series.

One of my problems was that the author did not seem to be taking sufficiently seriously how compromising the situation was for the main character, Episcopal priest Clare Ferguson. Clare is way too interested in a married man and not very discreet about it. This would quickly cause repercussions for most clergy, particularly when they are young and new (both to ordained ministry and to this particular church).

In this book, that problem is front and center and fully acknowledged. Much of the book involves the relationship between Clare and Russ, who is Chief of Police in the snowy upstate New York town of Millers Kill. The emotions and reactions are well described (perhaps a bit too much, given how much I was interested in what happened next in the mystery).

Russ and his wife Linda have separated as a result of his admitting his love for Clare (still not taken to a physical plane). A friend of Linda's drops by to see her and finds her murdered, face mutilated. Russ is the obvious suspect (look to the husband first), and if not him, then Clare (she wanted him free to marry her, right?) The internal affairs department for some state police agency sends a detective to take over the investigation, and the investigator makes no effort to conceal that she strongly suspects Russ.

Clare is trying to deal with her own situation, made more complicated by the arrival of unwanted help, but she ends up getting drawn into the murder investigation.

This book was very well written and quite engaging. I have to admit that I strongly suspected the killer early on, but then I read a lot of mysteries and ought to be pretty good at it by now. I highly recommend this book.

But -- again, I have some concerns about how careful the author is in getting the facts right. She seems to now understand the Episcopal church and all it's special language (although I would not say that Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence, lovely as it is, is consistently low in pitch and easy to sing), but I did find myself thinking that a lawyer-author ought to know that evidence taken as a the result of an illegal search is not admissable in court.

Although Spencer's novels are usually between a soap opera and Hallmark movie, but with more substance, this one was so cliche that the outcome was predictable. I listened to an audio-tape from the library and found myself fast forwarding a good bit of it. The leading characters were more perfect that real life: Lee, widowed mother of three teen age and adult children, was perfection herself, beautiful, brave, loving, and caring. Christopher, best friend of Lee's recently accidentally killed oldest son was also understanding, gentle, lonely, admiring, and caring, in spite of an abusive childhood. The story progressed slowly about the Lee-Christopher relationship and essentially eliminated Lee's surviving two children.

When the two go off swimming together, to the disapproval of Lee's adult daughter, I thought: "Oh no! Not another one of those older woman, younger man love stories." It was, explicit sex scenes and all. Fifteen hours of this was too much. An experienced, excellent author like LaVyrle Spencer is capable of and has produced much better.

This is the 2nd book I've read by this author and have enjoyed them both. Though she is billed as a 'romance' author, she is really a 'relationship' author, because her character definitely develop relationships. This author does a great job with character development, and with descriptions of people and places.

I did feel the book dragged at one point, shortly after the relationship became physical. I guess the point was to let us know how passionate they were for each other, but truly, I got the message early on, and all the extra did nothing to further the story. The book probably could have been shortened by about 50 pages.

I know some had a problem with the 'mother of best friend' thing, but really, I think they had a problem with the 'age' thing. Once you are a mature adult, friends come in all ages, so those people need to ask themselves...if Chris had been 45 and Greg's best friend, woud the 'mother of best friend' thing still come into play.

Anyway, I really DID enjoy this book and will read more by this author. I recommend her to anyone who wants to take there time 'savoring' the descriptive writing.

I picked this book up at the local Salvation Army for ten cents, which is about what it's worth. You get the feeling early on there's going to be some kind of sexual encounter, which sure enough is off-putting, pretty close to incest in this situation (best friend's mom, for pity's sake). I'm no prude, of course I know this stuff goes on every day. And I've never read any other Spencer books, maybe they're all not so touchy-feely ad nauseum. In the back of the book is a bit of the author's successful professional and personal life, picture of the hubby and she on vacation, daughter's wedding. But this book is a downer. There's enough glorifying of the wrong thing to do in the general media as it is. Guess I had the wrong impression of this author in my ignorance - thought she might be a saved Christian, ha-ha. If you have to read this stuff, save yourself some bucks and hit the local thrift stores and garage sales.

Spencer is a master storyteller, it's true. This book is heartfelt and so moving, but why does everything in it have to be so painfully normal? Throughout the book, sexist cliches abound -- mothers clap for their sons playing football even though they don't know what's going on without a man to tell them, Lee can't fix stuff around her house, and everything Lee owns is flowery and what Chris owns is simple and plain. The characters always seem to be eating beef and ice cream. Lee's daughter Janice is just a normal, pretty girl with nothing interesting to her. Lee's son Joey is portrayed as the generic slightly slobby but lovable awkward young man. It's just so...Average America or something. I connect with the story but not with the uninteresting characters, I guess because their lifestyles are different than mine.

I purchased this book as my daughter was diagnosed with possible vulvodynia, which I had never heard of. My City's library does not even have one book on this subject! The book was recommended to me by a vulvar specialist at the University of Michigan. In the chapter on pain, Dr. Stewart provides all the latest information on this little known and understood syndrome of vulvodynia, including recommended treatment. I have not yet had an opportunity to read the remainder of the book, but look forward to doing so.

I cannot praise this book enough. I have owned it for a couple months now and it is such a great reference tool. I wish I had known about this book years ago. I highly recommend buying this book if you can only buy one as I have read/owned/seen a handful of others and they do not compare.

This book was suggested by my healthcare specialist who correctly diagnosed my condition, but which had been overlooked by other specialists for decades. The information is important, essential, and presented without nonsense, about health issues which have caused misery for women for many years, but have never been acknowledged rightly. The author is conservative, and intelligent, personable and a pioneer in this field. I highly recommend this book for every woman.

This book was a fascinating look into what transpired in the air during the 9-11 nightmare. The authors access to the facts and the real participants made this book one I could not put down. Being a pilot myself it amazed me to read about what it was like to be in the air on that day, sitting in the cockpit not knowing if your plane was the next one to become part of history, and from the military who was tasked to protect us from a unknown enemy. The authors writing flows from the first page till the last plane lands, She really knows aviation and it shows. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is into aviation and even those who are not, just the reading of the facts makes this book a must read.

I found this book to be extremely interesting, fascinating. Fills us in on unpublished information that I did not know. It is a must read for people who study 9/11. It gives one hope that there are actually perople who operate outside of the box in an emergency situation.

With her extensive research, Lynn Spencer has opened the doors to the numerous events that occurred behind the scenes during the Sept 11 attacks on the United States. Ms. Spencer's investigation of the inner workings of the the U.S. air traffic control system, as well as the military's, takes us inside the intricate network of people who control the skies over the United States; the controllers, pilots, and the support staff that all work in tandem to keep our skies safe when we board a plane.
Ms. Spencer begins by reminding us of the early eronious reports of a small plane striking the north tower, and carries us through the buildup to the uncertainty and hysteria that most of us felt as the events unfolded throughout the day. She takes us inside the cockpits of the military fighters, as well as the commercial airliners that were affected by the events of that tragic day. She taught us that the military and civilian ATC do not speak a common language, yet they managed to find a common ground in order to take control of our skies in a few short hours.
It was an amazing story, one that I would have found hard to believe if I had not lived through the events of that day.

Solves a lot of mysteries from 9/11

This book for me started out a bit slow but I ended up unable to put it down. For me several mysteries were solved - such as the mysterious plane some eyewitness claimed to see by the Flight 93 wreckage - the rumors that there was a 5th airliner that was close to being hijacked (there was - and learn how a quick decision by the pilot probably saved the White House or Congress) -

Learn how the fighter pilots of Otis in MA and Langley in DC had to make some quick decisions and bypass the normally rigid chain of command on getting shoot down authority - how the VP and Secret Service was involved in that decision -

This book was written by an airline pilot who has done a lot of interviews - From the Head ATC guy overseeing ALL US Airspace (and first day on the job no less!) - to the ATC personnel - fighter pilots, airline pilots, Secret Service, and even the pilot of Air Force One.

It is a riveting book that will solve some lingering questions

I highly recommend this book!

I couldn't put this book down. I read it in 24 hours and promptly gave it to friends, who also loved it. It's not as though we don't know what happened here, but it's interesting to see what was going on behind the scenes.

A Must Read for Anyone Considering Staying Home

After agonizing with the impossible balance of work and family (for me at least)for several months after the birth of my child, I sought a resource or two that would help me evaluate my feelings, options and ultimately make a decision. I was surprised that there were so few and took a stab at a couple that seemed better than others. This was by far the best. The authors hit just about every issue that could possibly affect an individual's decision to stay home, stay at work or try to combine both. I say "individual" because I thought this book would be just as helpful to Dads deciding to stay home as for Moms. Obviously there are some women specific issues addressed in the book but otherwise there are a lot of issues that affect any parent deciding to stay home. Excellent read, very practical. If you want another recommendation and you are a professional woman, check out "Reinventing Ourselves after Motherhood" - also excellent for this particular type of woman.

This book was incredible. I am an attorney, with a two year old daughter and I am due with our second child in a few months. I have been working full-time since my daughter was born and have found it difficult to juggle my career and family life. When I found out I was pregnant with our second child, I was happy, but terrified as to how this would further impact my ability to continue with my career. I have been an attorney for five years, but I worked full-time and went to law school at night before I became an attorney. I have worked very hard to attain my professional goals and would not have thought of giving up my career when I had kids, until recently. I thought that women could have it all, kids and career, but I have found that, at least for me personally, I didn't feel like I was able to give 100% to either.

This book really helped me to do some soul searching. It is based on a study of professional women who have chosen to stay home for a few years or indefinitely. It helped me to realize that while I love my job (and the income), it is okay (and, yes even normal) that my priorities have changed since becoming a mother. It was reassuring to know that I am not alone, and that other professional women have faced the same issues.

Since reading this book, which I have now read twice in the last few weeks - the second time highlighting insightful sections/ideas - I have resigned from my firm and my last day will be shortly before my second child is born. This was one of the hardest decisions I have ever made. This book was invaluable in helping me to work though the psychological issues about staying home - such as loss of identity, loss of self worth and independence - which scared me even more than the financial implications. The book inspired me to make the decision to stay home, offered helpful suggestions on how to validate myself once I am home and emphasized the importance of discussing key issues with my husband BEFOREHAND to ensure that he and I are on the same page and that I have his full support. This book helped me to cope with the feeling that I was "giving up" my career and all that I have worked for. I know that it will be a difficult adjustment to be a stay at home mom, but I feel quite sure that I have made the best choice for myself and for my family. This book also helped me to realize that, as a professional, I can always go back to my career later, but that I can never get these years back with my daughter or my future child(ren). The book offers an unbiased approach to helping women focus on whether or not staying home is the right thing for them and their families. I liked the fact that this book provides the pros and cons to making the decision to stay home instead of preaching one way or another. I would recommend this book to anyone who values her career, income, etc. but who, since having kids, has had a shift in priorities and may need some support in making the decision to stay home.

This book is great if you are looking for a guide to the emotional changes you will have once deciding to become a SAHM. I was disappointed, because there isn't really anything that tells you just HOW to become a successful SAHM. I needed a guide for the day-to-day life I would be experiencing, how to be prepared, how to get started, how to organize my day, how to keep my home in order with the kiddos running around, etc. This book has none of that. It does, however, make you feel good about your decision to stay home. It also helps you with changing relationships between you and others including your spouse. It has an entire 2 chapters on public networking, changing public policies and state and federal legislature, and doing community work that I felt were a waste of paper.

Encouraging and inspiring -- a must read!, October 26, 2004
This is a must read for any woman looking to leave the work force and begin a career as a full-time mother at home. The authors do a great job of answering commonly asked questions.

Staying Home really encouraged and inspired me with facts and figures, suggestions and feedback from other moms surveyed. This book is perfect for moms who are already home, and would make a great gift for those on the fence. It may be just what they need to take on the role of full-time parent.
