Sorry about the five star "tooting my own horn" but if I don't think it's good why should you. I just wanted the chance for everyone to read the back of the book for more information. Born in Galesburg, Illinois, Nancy Lynn Spencer currently lives in the small incorporated village of East Galesburg, Illinois, with her husband, Monte, and their daughters, Nicole and Sarah. As a secretary-turned-teacher, her love for words began in the first grade with the discovery of the word "idiosyncrasy," while writing an acrostic as a tribute for her retiring first grade teacher. At that same time, she discovered Bible School at the small community chapel in East Galesburg, where she continues to attend today. Nancy continued writing poetry for special occasions. As attendance in her small church grew, members of the congregation were asked to share their talents and their names were scheduled on a bulletin board known as "Specials". Each time her name appeared on the board, Nancy prayed for inspiration. Each time it came with a look into humanity and hope, witnessing, prayer, truth, life, death and more. This is a collection of her "Specials."

Good Research, valuable information. This book combines fascinating folk stories with impressive facts. Genealogists say it doesn't matter how well the stories are told, the important thing is to tell them. Lois barton not only told them, but told them well. Dan Sellard, The Eugene Register-Guard

A new spin on an old genre

The story of Spencer Prague is a classic spy story with twists and turns at every page. The story follows some of the more traditional story lines but the descriptive and vivid language places the reader right in the middle of the action. The writer uses unique and exiting new predicaments to entice the reader. A story within a story of a character that is both well developed and a mystery, displaying his most vulnerable flaws and making him truly beautful and complex.
This book leaves the reader yearning for more. It's got all the must haves, sex, guns, and crazy fights!!
If you like the genre it's a must have. Even if you aren't that into this style of writing this writer can change your mind.

Before Kalashnikov

Michael Kalashnikov wasn't the only tinkerer to invent an advanced firearm which had an impact on Military History. As Roy M. Marcot demonstrates in his excellent book, there was Christopher Miner Spencer (1833-1922) and his revolutionary repeating rifle.

All that is well documented and illustrated in SPENCER REPEATING FIREARMS. If you're interested in the Civil War or the expansion of the American frontier west of Mississippi River, you need this book.

Marcot, for example, explains the various models and how they eventually overcame military doubts about another new, untried system. One of the innovative, young officers who saw its virtues and figured out how to use it was George Armstrong Custer.

He commanded the Michigan Volunteers during the momentous battle at Gettysburg. The cannon fire from that battlefield shook the ground where Custer carefully deployed his raw recruits armed with their new Spencers against none other than Wade Hampden's "Invincibles", part of J.E.B. Stuart's Confederate Cavalry.

The seven shot repeaters broke up several Confederate charges and delayed their offensive long enough to keep them out of the Union rear, which could have been catastrophic for Meade and his blue-clad Union soldiers.

Custer's subsequent career seemed to coincide with the adoption of the Spencer by such Regular Army formations as the Seventh Cavalry, which used it until 1873 when it was replaced by the single shot Springfield carbine, which Custer's men carried with them to the Little Big Horn in 1876.

There, he was confronted by Sioux, Cheyenne and other warriors many of whom had Spencers issued to them as surplus by the Department of the Interior (for hunting.) There, he fell to the very firearms which had been such an important building block in his military career.

This is a great book. I gave it a five star rating.

SPENCER ROAD IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE BOOKS. THE PROOF OF A TRULY FINE BOOK IS IN THE RE-READING--DOES IT HOLD UP? SPENCER ROAD DOES. THE LANGUAGE IS SHARP AND THE DICTION IS WORD-PERFECT. WITH EACH READING THE IMAGES GROW CLEARER. MORRIS SMITH HAS A DISTINCT VOICE WITHOUT AIMING FOR DISTINCTION. NONE OF THAT TRYING TO WRITE "SOUTHERN." JANICE DAUGHARTY, AUTHOR OF LIKE A SISTER

excellent biography of Pres Kimball's life before 1974

An excellent overview of the life of Spencer W Kimball. Offers many of his insights and personal comments about a number of issues he dealt with during his life and his service as an Apostle. Stories about his childhood, success in business, and the horrible battles he fought with his health are enlightening. I had always thought of Pres. Kimball as somewhat of a stern man, but I now know that he was much more compassionate than I realized. Well worth taking the time to read. The period of time he served as LDS Church President is covered in "Lengthen Your Stride," written by the same authors.

This book is offbeat and thought provoking. The author is obviously British, and some of the word choices reflect this. I picked up the book while on vacation and really enjoyed it.
