Spencer Books

I ran across this amazing book in a used bookstore yesterday in Manhattan. i stayed up most of the night, spellbound, and finished it today. Spencer's characters are real to life, not always likeable but REAL. His plot moves relentlessly. His insights are superb. What more to ask in a book? I had just finished Shirley Hazzard's The Great Fire and liked it quite a bit but found her characters too nice to believe and her plot a bit contrived. Spencer has got it all. He should be winning the awards but he's too good for most lazy readers.

Not only is this a very well-done biography of the musician Felix but the chapters on his grandfather, Moses Mendelssohn, and his father are also of much interest and carefully composed. The account of Felix Mendelssohn, who was a child prodigy and had an amazing career, is very readable and anyone who wants to know about it will be glad to read this book. I am not 'into' classical music, but yet I found this book worthwile.

When I studied drafting in school, we used a text by the same authors. I found it great, as it gave enough detail on how to draw, without being wordy, and there were ample pictures & diagrams to help. I'm no artist, by the way, but every now & then I did a couple of problems to do something different.

Time came when I wanted to get back into re-learning drafting, but due to family, and time constraints, there's no way I could again take courses. So, I bought the book.

If you're a beginner, don't be put off by the title.
This is exactly the same as the text and workbooks, by the same authors.
Start at the beginning, and pay attention to basics.

If you're a pro, it will refresh your skills.
This has a workbook with it, so practice isn't a problem.
It's all too true, that one shouldn't attempt to draw CAD until the "Board" has been mastered. Without the basics, you're building on a house of cards. My husband works in an engineering firm and sees this all the time. Some of the ideas inside, may seem outdated, but trust me, the priciples are still the same.

I highly recommend it. Personally, I found it practical, challenging and affordable.

This book is essential for general surgery board review, and helpful for the intern to study.

I was pleased with this purchase, it was delivered quickly and in great condition. It is good that the publisher allowed a look inside the book before I bought it to make sure it was the correct edition of the book. It also came with a study guide, which helped me in my class. Overall, I was happy with my purchase and I would buy from them again.

Aids, Cancer, and the Medical Establishment is written by a well known phyisician who has combined the best of orthodox medicine in the United States, and other medical solutions practiced globally. It provides a short history of the current state of medicine as its practiced in the United States. Although he doesn't state that medicine in the United States, must itself, participate in the Globalization process that is taking place in all established institution today. The act that he has incorporated into his practice global type medicine, speaks for itself.
The annecdotes are the hidden gems from his patients, who have minor to terminal type illness, speak well of the medical solutions that he uses.

I ordered this book for my son, who was born on Groundhogs Day (finding it after doing a search on Amazon for anything on the subject of Groundhogs Day). I was extremely pleased to find that not only was the book very entertaining for the younger set, but was a very good introduction to the science of weather. The author did an excellent job of illustrating weather concepts with the use of groundhog characters (e.g., Sunny, Tornado, Fog, etc.), and also included a glossary of weather terms.

I originally bought the book as a novelty for my son's birthday, but now regard it as a child's introduction to the weather. Both adults and children will enjoy Punxsutawney Phil and His Weather Wisdom.

Coincidentally, although I had purchased the book last year, I happened to meet the author at a small country fair two weeks ago, while on a trip back East (in Webatuck, NY, no less -- home of the world's largest chair. (Living in Webatuck means always having to spell your address.) Thanks for the groundhog cookie cutter -- I'll think of you every February 2nd!

I had the good fortune to buy this book several years ago at a used book store before I had any exposure to the field of art history. It was my mistake not to read it thoroughly when I first got it; as I became more familiar with the art covered in this volume as well as the secondary literature, I realized that it contains some of the best essays written by some of the best minds to have worked on the problems of art history. Among the exceptional essays collected in this volume: Otto Demus on Byzantine mosaics, Katzenellenbogen on the Romanesque tympanum at Vezelay, Panofsky on Jan van Eyck, Millard Meiss on Sienese painting, Beazley on Greek art, Rhys Carpenter on classical architecture. These are masterpieces of art history, judged by the amount of information they compress and their continued relevance in a field where so much of what's written ages poorly if at all.
