Great for Family Walks!
Helpful Votes: 17 out of 18 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-21
This is a great little book to take along on family outings. It's not comprehensive, but it was not meant to be; it does identify the most common plants that one is likely to run across and be curious about. The illustrations make the plants readily identifiable, along with regional distributions and common names. Small, easy to carry along, inexpensive enough take some rough handling by children. This small book could be the impetus for younger members of the family to find a new interest, but is also thorough enough to make walks in the woods enjoyable for the adults. I found it to be well worth the price.

"Fluctuating Life" is Truly Amazing

The poems in Fluctuating Life bounce from being overly emotionally charged to a state of neutral calm soon to repeat its upbeat intellectually, engaging emotional trance, at alternating periods of its readings.

University students and intellectuals will find the reading most engaging and stimulating more so than the average Joe or Jane.

"Fluctuating Life" offers a deep intellectual image of the author's up-and-down experiences! You can actually share the emotional grills that the author endures as well as the few triumphs. You feel, smell, experience and see the author's fears at the time of his emergency surgery, his disappointments in relationship after relationship, his loneliness, his uncertainties but importantly, his unrelenting strength to succeed. Importantly, you are provided with a vehicle that can easily aid in soothing one's own fears and elicit courage in times of gloom and frustration. "Fluctuating Life" is accordingly, a truly intellectually, engaging piece of art and a well written book of poetry by Joshua Spencer, a Canadian educator, author and poet who was born in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

As is written elsewhere, "Fluctuating Life" is Shakespearean!

A Lost Gem of A Book

This work's great demonstration in the mastery of the subject matter and the willingness to be frank about the mathematical and conceptual problems of physics by college text book authors are nearly without equal.

The only other time I've seen this kind of frankness in a textbook is in Richard Feynman's Famous Physics Lectures (for me, just Vol II).

This book really should be republished. Judging by the $70 - $80 used book price, there still appears to be a healthy market for it.

I have an interest in ohio history, aspeacialy frontiersmen. The accounts represented in this book are the most accurate Ive read anywhere. The accounts of Lewis Wetzle are the most consistant ive been able to find anywhere. it makes very good reading and I use it for references as well. If you want to learn more about actual events and not just made up story lines then this is the book for you!

I read this book to my sons and we loved it. I especially liked the part about Megamom - I could relate to it. I emailed and told all my friends about Megamom and Stinkman. I have it memorized now! If you are a mom of a boy, any age, you will get a kick out of this book.

complex, thoughtful discussion of ethical issues
Helpful Votes: 16 out of 18 total.
Review Date: 1999-11-15
Daniel Spencer's book is a thoughtful treatment of the issue ofecological justice in dialogue with several different methods ofreligious/ethical inquiry and a number of important authors who have also written on this issue. It connects (I think rightly) issues about the body, sexuality, erotic relationships, and various components of social justice in their relationship with one another and the question of solicitude for the planet and its creatures. I wouldn't have believed such a project could hold together if I hadn't seen it done with Daniel Spencer's competence and concern.

It not only articulates the urgency of the issues it addresses, but provides a step-by-step, multi-dimensional, full-bodied approach to ethical reasoning in general. A book about how to think ethically -- not a partisan book about what to think about when one thinks ethically -- but still forceful and prophetic in presenting its claims. Excellent work.

Controversial and Insightful

As the author, I should share what this book contains in a further review here. Written as one who left an organization called "The Way International", I have written a book, perhaps one of THE books debating much of their doctrine and recommend it to those who are considering joining or who have left. The book begins by trying to find the REAL reason behind the Fall of Man, take on the extreme-reaching theory of the "Seed of the Serpent" in which some believe the devil can also make people "born again" of himself, and discuss the Unforgivable Sin. It continues to debate why I believe born-again Christians cannot be possessed by the devil or demons, discusses the Foreknowledge of God, time travel, and debates the name of Lucifer being attached to the devil, and reasons why the Lucifer in the Bible is actually referring to something else. The book continues to explain what the "Lake of Fire" really is historically and debates why Hell is different from our own perceived ideas and theology. The Wise Men are discussed and explained how they came to know the "star" of Jesus Christ. The term "cherubim" is explained and ancient ways of looking at the heavens and how they pertained to scripture are revealed. So-called biblical "contradictions" are explained in the records of those crucified with Christ, where and when Peter did his denials and the time of those denials, and discusses the Woman Caught in Adultery and why it is out of context in John, yet really is a true story. Finally, the Da Vinci Code is debated and the term "Lamb of the First Year" is explained, which puts the Da Vinci Code to nothing other than fiction. With scriptural and subject indexes to aid in your search for subject and verse material, you may use the Reference Index for a quality search for excellent material.
