Great Insight into Diana's Complex Brother

I bought this book in London; it is the same one that you feature, although it has a different ISBN number. Amazing details about a man that the world met when we lost his beloved sister. Beautiful pictures, including one with Diana, their mother, Earl Spencer, his wife, and their children -- talking casually on a street in London. Also features an amazing picture of Charles Spencer and Prince Charles (with Nelson Mandela) in Cape Town in November of 1997. Very historical photo!!

This is the diary of Josephine Clay Habersham, a Southern aristocratic woman from Savannah Georgia, written in the middle of the Civil War. It is augmented with additional information from Josephine's Letter Book and the diary of Josephie's daughter Anna. Footnoted for clarification, the text is also illustrated with pen and ink drawings by Willian Etsel Snowden Jr. The tile, Ebb Tide, is a metaphor for the waining of the Southern colonial culture.

Well worth your time. Extremely illuminating. This is "Big History" at it's finest. Spencer traces the origins of religion institutions and religious belief from the most primitive societies to modern day in a completely objective and scientific manner. He uses examples from the most diverse of sources, from works of travel and description of primitive tribes on every continent on earth, to the religious literature of the ancient Egyptians, Hindus, Greeks and Jews. It is an incredible tour de force performance. I can't even imagine the reaction of his Victorian audience, (it was first published in 1885) as he makes no attempt to conceal his disbelief in the myths of Christianity, and pointedly draws parallels to them from every age and every continent.

The only other book I am aware of that covers this same material is Religion Explained: The Evolutionary Origins of Religious Thought. Which is also well worth your time.

Classics!

I remember finding this book in my mom's collection back when I was about 7 or 8 yrs old, and it's probably the reason I became a horror reader. The stories are all well-known classics (The Monkey's Paw being my favorite of the bunch), but it's the artwork that makes this a must-have. Each story is beautifully/grossly illustrated, and if they wouldnt scare guests, I'd frame the pages themselves! (Ya I'm sick!) If you can find it, get it!

Who says environmentalists need to lighten up? I do. Jeff McNeely and Paul Spencer Wachtel demonstrate how you can, and should, have fun with a serious and often inaccessible subject. The book makes a great primer for the eco-naive, and a wake up call for the enviro-grinches that take themselves too seriously. Full of great cartoons by John Caldwell and facts you can actually remember. Great for that next one-hour flight with a window seat. Take a good look.

Detailed, Accurate, Helpful Historical Context
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-27
This volume is the first half of the most comprehensive history of Edisto Island, the least known of the East Coast's Sea Islands. The book presents previously unpublished documentation of each plantation's history, woven with a candid description of where slaves were imported from in Africa, how slavery was part of each economic system in the island's history, and glimpses of the relationships among individuals who were slaves and owners on many plantations. Because the author brings years of scholarly research to a lifetime of familiarity with the island, the book includes historically accurate detail unavailable to previous authors.

Written in a clear, interesting style, this second volume includes historical information never before published on Edisto Island. The author has the benefit of being an "insider-outsider" since his family is originally from the island, but he brings meticulous research and the perspective of a lifetime lived in other parts of the U.S. and the world. While his love of the island is evident in his descriptions of the places and people of Edisto, the author also strives to present an unvarnished picture of how different populations on the island experienced the Civil War, the race relations and economic inequities of the war's aftermath, and the challenges that the island's people face today trying to live together and adjust to the 21st Century.

A Trip Through the Life's Work of a Grown-up Kid, Eduardo Paolozzi
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-20
A lad from Scotland is sent by his Italian butcher Parents for summers to an idyllic nautical-theme children's camp run by Mussolini's Blackshirts. That artist was to become U.K.'s Sir Eduardo Paolozzi. Somehow, he just had to turn out different. One of Britain's finest working sculptors, there is nothing tepid about his multimedia work. A key participant in Britain's pivotal collective art enterprise, the Independent Group, Paolozzi continues to amaze. "Eduado Paolozzi: Writings and Interviews" allows the artist to speak directly to us. We are almost unaware of the deft work by editor, Robin Spencer---just as it should be.

When a workman's skill and intellect is fused with a talented child. we get Paolozzi. Attractively designed and fresh enough to offer an unblemished look into this very unstuffy work by Britain's leading artistic maverick (deceased 2005). "Eduardo Paolozzi; Writings and Interviews" shows us just how that came to pass. The illustrations and documents chosen offer a wide. often intimate view, into a brilliant creative artist's daily practice, and wide range of art production.

INDISPENSABLE FOR UNDERSTANDING OF THE EGYPTIAN SACRED SPACE
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-01
The authoress has divided this fundamental study of the vocabulary for denoting the different parts and places of the ancient Egyptian temple, in eight, clear and thorough chapters, each one devoted to a specific area of such sacred building. The lexicon is mainly architectural and each term is arranged in the order of the "Egyptian alphabet", being discussed in ordered way just to compare each other in a summing up conclusion to each section. Each term discussed is accompanied by a selection of examples from original sources, as well as comments upon the history and development of its senses and spellings. There are a lot of new proposals as how to understand such-and-such a word. This is an in-depth and fundamental study for anyone interested in understanding the art and the symbolism of the Egyptian temples.
