Perhaps the greatest intellect of all timeReview Date: 2008-03-31
When Hayek said "We understand now that all enduring structures above the level of simplest atoms, and up to the brain and society, are the results of, and can be explained only in terms of, processes of selective evolution..." He was reiterating the insights that Spencer was already expounding over a century earlier. Given my current state of ignorance I believe that Herbert Spencer is the greatest intellectual of all time, with F.A. Hayek coming in a close second. It seems like the world is just beginning to catch up to Hayek. Who knows how much longer till we rediscover Spencer.
This book is a masterpiece. It has been a long time since I read it and the essay I remember most is "Over-legislation" where he does a great job criticizing government interventions into what he referred to as the social organism. He was right! We really are a social organism... or has Hayek would mention "extended order". I quote this wonderful essay often in my book.
No wonder Darwin himself said to him "Every one with eyes to see and ears to hear (the number, I fear, are not many) ought to bow their knee to you, and I for one do." and in another occasion referred to Spencer as "twenty times my superior."

Great Book Format, Knowledgable AuthorReview Date: 2005-02-27
I find this an easy way to learn what's going on. It's an interesting combination of a tutorial type book combined with a reference type book. You're not just given an endless list of do this, do that, now do .... Instead you can go through the book from start to finish picking out what's important to you. Or you can go to the index and quickly get sent to exactly the page that's talking about what you want.
As for the specific content of this book, it's written by a professional user of Motion that is also Apple-certified as a Motion and FinalCut Pro instructor. He knows what he's talking about and has the ability to conven his thoughts well. His experience in training others on using Motion has given him an understanding where problem areas lie and he can cover these to prevent later problems.

Reviews of Mystic SeafoodReview Date: 2006-11-15
-Linda Greenlaw, author of The Hungry Ocean, The Lobster Chronicles, All Fishermen are Liars, and along with her mother, Martha Greenlaw, Recipes from a Very Small Island.
"Jean Kerr's love of writing about the sea, maritime history and folklore, and food come sailing through in this wonderful book about fish and shellfish cookery. And the best part is that the recipes are timely, doable and simply prepared; now that is my kind of cooking!"
-Mary Ann Esposito, host and creator of the PBS series Ciao Italia and the author of nine cookbooks including Ciao Italia Pronto!
"Get out your lobster pot, your clam and oyster knives and a big appetite. Mystic Seafood is as delicious to read as it is to cook from. Jean Kerr's description of a traditional New England clam bake, odd tidbits about oysters, lobsters and scallops will have you shaking your head: "Hey, I didn't know that!" This is a terrific addition to the legends of great cookbooks devoted to the subject of New England seafood!"
-Kathy Gunst, Cordon Bleu trained chef, and author of nine cookbooks, including Stonewall Kitchens Favorites and former culinary editor of Food and Wine magazine.
"Jean Kerr has a wonderful sense of food, particularly from a historic viewpoint with her knowledge of the old and tried combinations that have made New England and Mystic Seaport great places to sit down and have a simply made, but delicious soup, casserole, baked, fried steamed or grilled piece of fish."
-Master Chef James Haller, author of five cookbooks including The Blue Strawbery Cookbook and Cooking in the Shaker Spirit.

Great Role Modeling of Communications and MotivationReview Date: 2004-09-13
The One Minute Manager provides a positive role model for those who have not yet seen one, and good reinforcement for those who have not seen one lately.
If organizations try to operate on the assumption that only the manager has ideas worth acting on, then very little will be accomplished. The One Minute Manager provides a useful model for opening up and stimulating the minds of everyone in the organization to accomplish more.
Not only is this advice worth following from an effectiveness point of view, it will also make you feel better about yourself as a manager and as a person when you follow it. And you will certainly make those who report to you feel a lot better, as well.
I like the use of a parable to help each of us reexamine ourselves, because it makes the reader feel less defensive. But be sure to remember what you gut instincts would have been in the same situations the One Minute Manager describes. Otherwise, you may miss the point of how much your behavior needs to change.
This is one of a handful of books well worth rereading annually.
Unlike most business books, this one is short and easy to read. The academic language has been banished, and it is well written.
If you want to go beyond The One Minute Manager to get even better results, you will have to learn and use other beneficial habits as well. But you can have all the great ideas in the world, and if you annoy and stifle everyone around you, not much will happen. So think of this book as necessary for more success, but not sufficient in and of itself for getting the utmost benefits in working with others.
The best management series ever!Review Date: 1998-10-16

Fight the Leeches on Their Own Turf!Review Date: 2004-01-08
In the subsequent chapter we get a look at major elements in Egypt's culture, politics, geography and environment including a look at Islam, political parties, indigenous wildlife, minorities like the Copts, ancient ruins, cities like Cairo and Alexandria and places such as Lake Nasser or the Sinai. More importantly, there is an examination of the supernatural side of Egypt, including a look at the Tuat, Egypt's unique cultural spin on the Umbra, which includes four Umbral Towers (one for each element and direction, spiritually marking the boundaries of Egypt's borders) and the Twelve Hours of the Night (twelve Umbral Domains from Egypt's mythology). There is also a look at major Garou and Wyrm Caerns in Egypt. The next chaper goes onto to cover major NPCs for each Tribe, including Cairene Glass Walkers and Bone Gnawers, the Silver Fangs of House Wise Heart, Bedouin Uktena, Red Talons in the Western Desert, Sufic Stargazers, British Fianna and, of course, the Silent Striders.
The fourth chapter looks at major storyteller devices in Egypt, such as Jackal Fever, the Eaters of the Dead, the Egyptian Umbra, Sutekh's Curse and a secret Rite developed by the Children of Gaia that allows the Silent Striders to briefly return to Egypt. Theres also an examination of the Ahadi, an alliance of African Fera which includes Egypt in it's territory, and a look at the native Shifters of Egypt (Mokole, Bastet, etc), as well as some information for games set in ancient Egypt. Following this is a chapter on various antagonists in Egypt, such as the vampiric Followers of Set, Endron Oil (a subsidiary of Pentex), the Black Spiral Dancers, the Ratkin of Suez and even a few horrors unique to Egypt. This book does a wonderful job covering Egypt (and the Middle East in general), especially with the metaplot of the Striders trying to retake their homeland from the Leeches. Not only that, but your players can get in on everything from Jackal Fever and the fall of House Wise Heart to the sealing of the Ahadi. A great resource, and it fits in well with other Mummy and "Year of the Scarab" products in representing Egypt and the Middle East.
Must have for the Silent Strider fan!Review Date: 2001-11-27
From the moment you take this book in your hands, it's amazing. It has one of the best cover arts in any Werewolf product I have ever seen (except, perhaps Werewolf: the Dark Ages). The book details the role of the denizens of the World of Darkness in Egypt, from the point of view of the Garou; it tells us more about the Curse that was laid upon the tribe; their connection to the origin of the Setite vampires; a very special kind of Bane that haunts the Egyptian deserts and their relationship towards other supernaturals (other Fera ans the Mummies, for instance).
If you are a fan of this tribe, or if you want to take your Werewolf chronicles into the lands of sand, buy this book!

The EPA Weeds Out The Truest PestsReview Date: 2005-10-23
The main character of "Pest", Derk Bryan, is an independent contractor specializing in investigations for the Environmental Protection Agency involving crimes, who finds plenty of work befitting his expertise when he is sent to investigate a chemical spill and an ominous murder at a pesticide development and manufacturing plant. Attempting to unravel the threads of clues, Derk discovers sinister far-reaching tentacles, leading to the influential plant owner, Jack Von Lleuwan, a ruthless and corrupt leader of pesticide patents whose greed leads to the destruction of the environment and people's lives.
The engaging narrative of "Pest" contains much to think about regarding toxicology, environmental awareness and the balance of nature. For instance: Cows don't naturally eat corn, but when corn becomes their diet, the cows are given a drug to induce tolerance which becomes another drug in the milk products that we ingest. The character, Bear, says, "The natural world is the source of all our power, creativity, and love, and its energy flows into each of us. We're destroying it, and if we keep it up, the human spirit will wither away."
The fictitious "Pest" also leads one to wonder how closely the story can resemble a true one - issues we should all think about.
"Pest", an outstanding Ecological Thriller.Review Date: 2005-10-18
This book takes place in the 1990's and is a story about a case that begins when an Enviromental Protection Agency (EPA) investigator is summoned frrom a fishing trip in the Florida Keys to investigate a mishap at a West Michigan chemical plant in a case that evolves into murder. When the investigator starts his investigation at the West Michigan chemical plant he finds leads that also take him to the Tampa Bay Florida area and Ohio.
This story brings out how ruthless manufacturers of toxic chemicals will stop at nothing, including murder, to get their pesticides approved, and the corruption of politicians that are involved, regardless of the fact that many of the toxic chemicals on the market, are legally or illegally, are contaminating the food and water supplies worldwide and destroying the environment, plus continue to cause many illnesses and deaths each day.
This book has some raw language in it that I feel is necessary to capture the real understanding of the story. There is many unique characters in this book that the readers will relate to. I found this to be an excellent book and one that I will highly recommend.
