Great for a professional

This book was purchased in error and after reading about 1/2 of it the first weekend I found that it was a keeper. Being both a student and a professional I found this book to be geared towards the professional manager who needs a general overview of fraud and the effects of fraud. I found that it was an easy to understand book that did not dive too much into the technical issues, only the practical issues at hand. I'd say it was a must-read for any manager who does not have much background in auditing.

Applicable to more than auditors & compliance professionals

This is one of the few books about auditing and compliance that is written for general business managers instead of auditors. To be sure, the material represents an excellent training tool for auditors and compliance specialists who need to develop a company-wide awareness program as one tier in a comprehensive initiative. However, the main message in the book, and the approach it presents, is based on the fact that the responsibility for deterring fraud extends well beyond auditing and compliance. Indeed, the most effective deterrent is an aware management and workforce that is vigilant at all levels.

Three objectives of this book are: (1) serve as a primer on financial fraud, its impact on organizations and common exposures, and (2), give mangers who may not be trained in auditing guidance and techniques to investigate fraud if they find themselves tasked with doing so (a particularly common occurrence in small-to-medium businesses), (3) provide a comprehensive framework for detecting, investigating and dealing with fraud.

The full range of topics are covered and are presented without the professional auditing and compliance jargon, which makes it easy for general business professionals to understand. I like the way the authors addressed ethics, and especially like the chapter on whistleblowing (see "Merrill Lynch: The Cost Could Be Fatal" by Keith A. Schooley for a realistic view of how tricky this can be for all parties). In addition, I thought that the integrated approach that defines clearly articulated policies and procedures, and roles and responsibilities for all stakeholders is a critical success factor to making it all work. The reason is, like security, fraud control requires a defense in depth that depends on no single element of that defense. I also found the two appendices (A-Forensic Statement Analysis and B-An Introduction to Data Mining as a Fraud Risk Management Tool) invaluable.

For whom will this book be most useful? Managers, regardless of functional area or specialty, will gain insights into causes and steps to prevent fraud. It will also provide basic tools for investigating suspected fraud.

Professional auditors or compliance specialists will find a viable approach to developing and implementing a company-wide initiative that will significantly reduce fraud.

Corporate and IT security specialists will find a wealth of material that will support their own detection, investigation and action procedures, especially for the IT security specialist who is trained in forensics.

My six year old son loves this book. He nearly wore out a copy from the local library before we purchased this for him. It's not a complete guide (he wouldn't be able to carry it around in his school bag if it were!) but it more than satisfies his curiosity in fish and different species. He enjoys the pictures, but the descriptions also answer his major questions (how big is it, what does it eat, where does it live, etc). If you're looking for in-depth, textbook descriptions, you'll want something else, but if you would like a basic, "what kind of fish is that" book for North American fish, this is great.

I was in the CBI for over 2 years and this is the most accrate account of any books I have read on the subject. If they had 6 stars I would vote for that.

Excellent overview of the Hump pilot's challenges

This book gets a 10 for two reasons: the author scoured hundreds of books and articles and created a perfectly sized introduction to the Hump CBI history that should whet appetites of all military aviation buffs. Second, and most important, this is the ONLY WWII book I've seen that was honest about the women in these mens' lives. No beating around the bush in this book, although there was plenty of that in the CBI! An excellent book that touches on all the challenges of flying the highest mountains on the planet.

This book is a gorgeous coffee-table volume. It is divided into sections by time periods beginning in the 1840s and continues to the present. Each chapter is introduced with an in-depth discussion of what was happening at that time, then moves to captioned photos. The book is large, 10"x12", and is presented on heavy, high quality paper; a pleasure to hold and look at! My only criticism is that readability was sacrificed for design. The type is very small and, therefore, difficult to read, and the caption reference number below each photo is mircoscopic. Also, even though I'm sure the photos were reproduced perfectly, some are hard to make out (what do I expect for 100+ year old photos!) I recommend this book whether you are interested in this subject, interested in photography or just love beautiful books.

This book was very interesting and opened my eyes to a point of view I never considered. Here I learned that Satan is the enemy and the Mormons are a victim. I sped through this book because it was so interesting.

Agreeing as I do with Jim Spencer (that the focus of contension should be on Mormon theology and not the 'victims' caught like a trapped insect in a spider's web), I found this book to be refreshing and a very correct method to gently share the Gospel of Grace with love and compassion to Mormons (who may not have heard that the Bible teaches salvation by grace through faith in Jesus, born of a virgin by the Holy Spirit - NOT NATURALLY BY AN EXALTED MAN WHO BECAME A GOD). Too many Christians try to ridicule Mormons and openly attack their testimonies. Jim Spencer loves the people of the LDS Church. He, as I do, just wants them to focus on what the Bible says, and look objectively at the claims of Joseph Smith and Church teaching. I would obviously recommend that all Christians who want to share and relate with members of the LDS Church read this ( as should all members of the Church).

Tad...what can I say man you've done a great job.

I read the book in just under 3 days and I was laughing the entire time. You've managed to hit the "nice guy" on the nose. Maybe you can lobby to be an ambassador of sorts! It definitely gave me hope overall as, like you, I've been burned by those women who think they want a nice guy but end up with jerks.

To anyone reading this...buy the damned book! If you're a "nice guy" it will help put things into perspective, and if you're a sexy lady looking for a "nice guy" but don't know where to look than this book might give you some insight in what to look for.

Tad's a great guy. I wish you and Katie all the best man!

Few have approached taboo subjects such as pornography, illegal drug use, professional wrestling and sleazy rock and roll with such unbridled glee and enthusiasm, let alone filed it under nonfiction. Mike Edison is one of the few, the proud, the unabashed. His memoir reads like a rocket to all the places your parents (rightly) warned you against. It'd be foolish to follow Edison's example, but only a fool wouldn't want to tag along for the ride.

Porn, Pot, Punk Rock...How Can It Get Any Better?

This isn't a memoir; it's a crime scene! The author's raunchy and ridiculous romp through the underbelly of the New York publishing scene is not to be missed. The writing is sharp and powerful, like a burlesque rim shot, and the stories unfold effortlessly through fast-paced action and drug-induced narrative. This author writes as if Toby Young downed a bunch of uppers and got smacked in the face by a flying bar stool. With this raving party of a book, Mike Edison may prove a worthy heir to the pill-poppin', line-snorting, gun-toting and anti-establishment legacy of the good Dr. Hunter S. Thompson. It's that good.
