I'm someone who's always had ideas for books throughout my life, but I never felt like I had time, and even if I did, I had no clue where to start the process. Now that I'm semi-retired, I have the time and the same passion to put my ideas into print.

Having scoured the marketplace and found some good reads, I can honestly say that this is the most accessible and interesting book to help writers, both serious ones and ones like me...who just want to write books in their spare time. It DOES NOT read like a self-help manual or a how-to guide at all...it really is a page turner. Probably why it's been endorsed by some of the top people in the publishing industry.

I think that this book would be perfect for any Baby Boomer who has ideas, stories, knowledge, or creativity to share with their peers or the younger generations...like Shulman and Spencer say, it's a way to "leave your legacy." This book is your "helping hand" to get there!

As a person with several ideas for books, I've been scouring the marketplace trying to find the best books that will help me to get my ideas onto paper and then show me the full range of my publication options once my manuscript is completed. Get Between the Covers is an amazing book. There are many useful resources that are specific to different areas of writing or marketing that are out there, some of which I found helpful, but this book encapsulates the whole process for me in a way that is manageable and has me excited about the prospect.

The organization of the book makes this easy for anyone to with a desire to a write a book, even just as a hobby or a way to pass time, to sit down from Day 1 and see the process through to completion. The anecdotes and success stories of different types of authors facing the different challenges in writing and publishing were very insightful. I highly recommend this book to anyone, and you can see from the endorsements from some of the top individuals in the publishing industry that they also feel that this is a valuable book for anyone.

A "must own" book for anyone looking for a creative outlet!

Simply an amazing read! I originally heard about this book from a family member and bought Get Between the Covers as a gift for a few friends who have ideas for books, but needed that "final push" and also help with knowing how everything works.

Even though I wasn't planning on writing a book, I read this book cover to cover just to learn more about what goes into the industry. Now I'm sold on writing a book myself! Dr. Shulman and Eric Spencer have created a masterpiece here for the creative spirit. I feel like a whole new realm of creativity has opened for me!

In a world of information and dis-information comes a breath of fresh air for anyone who is considering just writing or even publishing a book. Eric and Neil have cut to the chase in simple, easy to understand language to help guide the would be author. In this day and age of high tech information, we often forget there is a wealth of information being lost each year as we lose the knowledge and experience of a generation. I applaud Eric and Neil for not forgetting "The Greatest Generation" and creating a map to follow so their stories and knowledge are not lost forever.

Easy to read and unbiased in their approach, this book is sure to impact future generations for years to come. Well done!

The author grabs your attention by setting you right in the excitement of New Mexico becoming a state, as seen through the eyes of a young woman and her family. Mardee has a captivating personality that draws you into her adventures and her loves, with an ambition beyond her era. The history of NM and descriptions of her beautiful mountains are wonderfully woven throughout the book. You won't want to put the book down. I am waiting for a sequel.

"Girl of the Manzanos" is an amazing story. Even though I am not finished reading it yet, this story grabbed my attention the first time I picked it up to read it. This story is insightful, and I think young boys, and especially young girls, can relate to the main character, Mardee. Barbara Spencer Foster did an amazing job writing "Girl of the Manzanos." It was obviously hard work writing such a good story, but she managed to do it successfully. I think everyone should read "Girl of the Manzanos."

Girl of the Manzanos is an easy flowing novel portraying the history of the early statehood era of New Mexico and entertwining romance with the culture of the time. The main character, Mardee, is appealing and believeable, and somebody with whom we can admire and identify. She's ambitious, beautiful, and bright - a girl ahead of her time. I couldn't put the book down and believe it will appeal to readers of all ages.

Glimmer Train has fascinating short stories which hold my attention from beginning to the end. The publication itself is quite classy with personal touches, such as photos of each author as a child and personal comments by the authors. When I saw this little cookbook for only $6.95 I thought I'd give it a try. Boy was I surpised. It was well organized with over 150 pages of recipes that are easy to read and follow. After living in Germany for three years I was looking for some authentic recipes that I could use to bring back some old memories, and they were there along with quite a few phases in German which really touched home. Many of the recipes are some of my favorites but I was disapointed that there a few classics left out like Jagersnitzel. Other then that the book was great! It's a real steal for only $6.95...

Great German Recipes, in the popular recipe-card file size Stocking Stuffer format, is chock-full of the best recipes and notes about Germany. This book was compiled by Lynn Hattery-Beyer who married a German editor and has strong interest in the foods and traditions of the various regions of Germany. Originally from Iowa, Lynn went to West German to study, and stayed! The cover was done by artist Helen Blanck of Minnesota, who created the border art. She utilizes the traditional motif of flowers in this design.

Great German Recipes contains an array of information on German-American culture. language and sites. Notes on German Table Blessings and Traditions demonstrate how German eating habits differ from ours in many respects. Also included are Menu Suggestions for a complete, delicious meal!

The German specialties included in this book are wonderful! Beverages of Fruit Punch and May Wine are sure to please any visitor. Start your meal with a Dandelion Salad and Bremen Herring served with Old Order Amish Bread! For a main course try Stuffed Cabbage Rolls or Venison Terrine with Black Forest Asparagus and Caraway Potatoes. For dessert, try the Bavarian Sweet Rolls or Oma`s Apple Dumplings! These are just a few of the options offered in this book!

Great German Recipes is excellent for personal collections and as a memento of German-American traditions!

For the price, you can't beat this little spiral-bound book! It is surprisingly loaded with over a hundred authentic German recipes and many little tidbits and facts about German cuisine. Even better, this little item won't take up a lot of space on your hutch or cookbook shelf either! It can fit easily in a drawer or nook somewhere out of the way. Of course, you'll want to keep this one close at hand anyways.

If you are into pictures for your cookbooks, though, you might be a tad disappointed as it has none. The recipes are easy to follow, though, so it really should not pose any problem for you. I'm the type of cook who can take or leave pictures in my guides; it really depends on how well I know the ingredients. Also, another great feature about this book is that the ingreidents themselves are not rare, exotic or hard to find. You need not know a German butcher or importer to make the recipes contained herein.

Overall, for under $7, this is one of the best bargains and best finds you will ever encounter for German cookery, or any other regional cookbook for that matter! I highly recommend this product for anyone either looking to expand their horizons in European cooking or just looking for something unique and delicious from time to time!

When you read this book you will realize why there is so much controversy about Human origins. The fossil record is so sparse, it makes you wonder how scientists have been able to deduce as much as they already have. This book was probably written as a reference for college level courses in paleoanthroplogy, but it is also a good reference for armchair amateurs such as myself. Concise, well written and superbly illustrated, the book is an invaluable resource.

Okay, Australopithecus afarensis. I've heard of Lucy; I know she was found at Hadar in Ethiopia, but what is her accession number? How much of her was actually recovered? Good thing I have my copy of Larsen et al. "Human Origins: The Fossil Record" on hand.

Superbly illustrated with line drawings and maps of the different fossil localities, this encyclopedic text traces human evolution from the Dawn Apes through modern Homo sapiens in the best way possible-- with the fossils. Each specimen is well drawn, most in multiple views, so that the student or amateur who can't make it to Addis Adaba to see the real thing can have a chance to compare fossil homonids from around the world. In addition, for comparative purposes, the authors have also supplied illustrations of the modern great apes. A fun and informative text either for study or just as an escape into our origins. I must emphasize, however, that the emphasis of this book is on illustrations for pictorial comparisons, not on descriptions. The text concerning each fossil, therefore, is fairly short.

Awesome illustrations and coverage of the specimens

Covers a ton of prominent homind specimens with detailed black and white illustrations (drawings not photos) that accent the morphological features of each specimen. Includes detailed descriptions of the specimens and also a nice description at the beginning of each section. As a bonus also includes a section with non-hominid primate specimens. This book is great for anthropology students needing a quick reference to numerous specimens. It also contains numerous references to the literature about each specimen so makes a great starting point for research.

This book is an excellent source for students and teachers of human evolution. It is the first compilation that I have seen that puts drawings of all the major fossil finds together in one place. It is very helpful as a supplementary text in an intro human origins class since most books lack adequate pictures of the major fossil players.

Gina and I spent the better part of 2 years together back in the 70's. The stories about her pets are very true as I can attest to. Her love of finding new experiences was always there. When we lived in New Mexico I was involved in working with the IBEW to organise the electronics company I was working for at the time. Gina helped me with this and this was probably Gina's first experience with the unions. After our move back to Chicago I could see there was no stopping her and I would just be slowing her down so we parted ways. One of our trips through the deep south was a real wake up call to her and how Women were being treated in those days.
After reading the book I now can see very clearly that she had made the right decisions in her life and how to live it.

Here's a readable, professionally written and published story about a real woman named Regina Polk who was born poor in Arizona, went to California in the 1970s and wound up in Chicago, of all places, working as an organizer for the biggest, toughest Teamster local in the country. This book brings her to life, complete with pictures. Filled with energy, beautiful in an unconventional way, gifted in her ability to build relationships, committed to honest representation, she broke some serious glass ceilings. Then, at age 33, she gets killed in a small plane crash. This book does not penetrate all the mysteries around her life and death, but it probably does the best that can be done. Women around Chicago today benefit from funds raised in her memory by the stewards council at her local, IBT 743,to pay for labor education and labor leadership development.

What a full and passionate life Regina lived. As another reviewer pondered, one can't help but wonder - what if she'd lived beyond her 33 years? Where would she be now? The story told in the book is colorful, touching, inspiring, sad and yet filled with hope. That she touched so many lives in such a short time, and that both her life and her death impacted so many people is somewhat amazing.

The book takes the reader on a fast paced journey through the very short but amazingly full life of this young labor leader. Would make a great "Norma Rae" style movie!

This book is an excellent source that covers system, component and architectures of memory systems and how the total computer memory system is put together into a working system. The coverage of the material is up to date and addresses the critical issues that are facing the present and next generation memory systems being implemented and designed today. The book was well written and is a great source for engineering students and even to a degree non-engineering people. For me, a seasoned engineer, that is relatively new to memory systems, is has been a great source in helping me understand the overall system and how it all works. It also addresses some of the major engineering issues facing todays design that I am presently working on and covers the details of the components to give a good overall understanding of how it all fits together. An excellent overall source to have on hand for any engineer working on memory systems

Anyone who has built a computer or measured its performance recently knows that all but the slowest CPUs spend roughly 90% of their time twiddling their thumbs, checking their wristwatches, waiting on the memory system. The memory system today defines computer-system performance, yet very little is written about it (how does it work? what are the parameters? how to optimize it? etc.). So we wrote this book to address that -- it covers all facets of memory-systems design. Paraphrasing Richard Sites, one of the lead architects of the DEC Alpha processor over a decade ago, memory systems design is the only thing worth focusing on right now ... all else is a waste of time. Hopefully this will help you to build something that rocks; that was our goal.

Minor correction: the book is hardcover, not paperback.

To steal a line from Studs Terkel, I couldn't put the damned thing down. The Old Detective's Daughter is that kind of book. Spencer has written a good work of fiction that held me in its grasp until the last page. While the book is only 99 pages, it is a multi-textured story about forgiveness and chance. Set in Chicago and Youngstown, Ohio, the main character T.J. Montegomery, a woman detective, is hired to help an older man at the end of his life find his estranged daughter. In the process of working on the case for the old man, her own father is dying of cancer. While she has to accept that her father is about to die, she can't quite make peace with the bad state of medical care he receives. The story winds up being less of a mystery and more about the relationship between father and daughter. The parallel plots of father and daughter draw you in as they move to wrap themselves up at the end. I like particularly liked TJ's close friend Karen. Spencer creates an intriquing character in Karen who helps TJ see her plight from a different perspective. This is a good little story that has me looking for more from this writer.

The characters and places are very vivid in this book. The story strikes a balance between standard detective story and the nature of family relationships. A.V. Spencer's description of the title character's encounter with the health care industry is particularly chilling.

Review Date: 2001-08-10
The mystery novel has long been a genre that authors have used to deliver a compelling story while also including a serious theme. This book interested me from the start because it used the genre so well, which is why I agreed to write the foreword. The story is certainly compelling--centered around an aging man's search for his long-estranged daughter. This is one of those stories where the detective herself (yes, a woman detective, as the title implies) is emotionally drawn into the case as discovering the whereabouts of her client's daughter also uncovers the detective's grievances with her own father. A.V. Spencer gracefully weaves these parallel stories together, in a tale that will take every baby boomer through the conflicts and victories that characterized their own generation. Do the fathers and daughters heal their old wounds and get back together? It would be unfair to both reader and author if I revealed that, but I can say there are intriguing and touching moments along the way.

"The Oz Factors" pulls back the curtain of misinformation and deceit carefully concealing the vested interests of the "great and powerful" of western civilization. What you have been taught about western history, science, archaeology and spirituality have been twisted, distorted and concealed from view to serve the self-serving lies and fears of wizards and witches.
Learn how to think for yourself. You don't have to be the victim of the "oz factors" any longer. Read this book.

This is an incredible book that will open your eyes to the real history of mankind, the current precarious conditions of our world's ecology, economy, and social structures under the influence of the powerful and oppresive vested interests, and the propaganda machines they control and use so well.

I could not put this book down as Lawrence Spencer gave me a history lesson unlike any I ever had before. And even as I was being amazed by this tapestry of the history and development of the educational, medical, pharmaceutical, banking, government and military organizations of our world, it was the combined impact of their effects on our planetary environment, the health, sanity, and freedom of all beings that changed my viewpoint forever. I was so shocked that it took this book to draw back the curtains of illusion and make the truth so evident that I had to admit to an old, nagging apprehension that things were not quite as they appeared or were being "officially" presented to be.

The author's humor and wit kept me glued to this story, and the analogy of "The Wizard of Oz" to these frightening mysteries of life made the vast scope of this work magically comprehensible. He even exposes the simplicity of how to handle our information overload so that we can actually see and determine for ourselves just what is actaully going on "in the merry old land of Oz" so we can act to help create a meaningful future on this planet. I foresee this book as a major motivation for increased global awareness and social responsibility that will rejuvenate our hopes for the future generations with positive and effective actions taken now.

Ever since I was in the 5th grade, I've been into Japanese comics. I've read bunches of manga books but out of all of them I think the entire PEACH GIRL series are the most interesting books. The whole series has a awesome plot. Miwa Ueda is a genuis! 100% worth buying!!!

Just wanted to update what chibi-love said. Right now, there is an anime for the series and it's wrapped up with 25 episodes. Pretty good in itself, especially if you don't read the manga. It still conjures up the basic feelings of sympathy, anger (Sae!!grr~~) and stuff... But I should say that it's quite toned down seeing as the time slot in Japan they aired it was Saturday, 7am! But still good to watch if you're a fan no? I myself prefer the manga but I still really enjoy the anime. Can't have too much of Peach Girl~!;D Plus it was nice to see the characters animated, talking, moving! All our fave scenes in nice, animated action! ;D

OOOO! Sae is up to no good!

Wow! This was a shocking volume. I can't believe what happened. I don't want to spoil it for you but you should read on if your a Peach Girl Fan! Things that happened here is stuff that you might not have imagined and well, it's really good and I wish Momo gets what she wants in the end.

Shoujo At Its Finest!

The first time I read Peach Girl, it was a featured manga in the monthly magazine, 'Smile'. I intentionally bought it to read Sailor Moon Stars, but it didnt take me long to become captivated by the simple yet wonderful story of Momo, the love-strucken and misunderstood girl, just trying to get through high-school.
Manga(Japanese comic)stories which focus around the toils and troubles of young girls are common (known as shoujo)in Japan. Any manga fans might say, 'What's so good about Peach Girl, how is it better from other shoujo stories?'
The difference is, the characters in Peach Girl are very believable. Everyone has a fave, whether it be the naive yet headstrong Momo, Sae the scheming 'friend' who wants to destroy Momo, Kiley- the lovable bishonen (pretty boy) who cares deeply for Momo while providing comic relief, or, Toji- Momo's crush since Junior High who is shy and gullable but willing to protect Momo at all costs.
The Peach Girl manga has the ability to make you laugh and cry (not ashamed to say on several occassions!). The situations, characters and settings are so realistic, and easy to relate to it is impossible not to become addicted. Once you pick it up, you'll be begging for more by the end of the chapter.

Another suggestion I would make to any Peach readers is, once you have read the manga, try to obtain the Live Action Taiwanese TV show (Mi Tao Nu Hai). There is no anime of Peach Girl, but the Live Action provides just as much satisfaction, if not more. It has been commented that Peach Girl relies on realism so much, to turn it into a cartoon would be an injustice, live action works better therefore.

Peach Girl won the 1998 Kodansha Manga award (highly prestigious in Japan). The storyline, characters and outstanding artwork all contend to the reason why.
Read this manga, and discover a whole new obsession!
Props to Miwa Ueda! ^_^
