This is a lovely book with lots of information. However, I bought it to try to decide on a new color scheme for my Cape Cod home, only to find that just one Cape is shown in over 300 pages of this book. There are many beautiful houses presented, but most of them are not what I would consider your average middle-class home. I found nothing appropriate for my house, so it was a disappointment for me and I will probably return it.

This book by Susan Hershman has been invaluable in many ways. Since we live in a Victorian City, the book is a way to show off ours and other similar cities. We use Susan's book for ideas and suggestions for our neighbors when they are improving their homes. Visually, House Colors is so stunning that it is now our number one cocktail table book. We can't imagine anyone undertaking a project involving painting without utilizing House Colors.

This is the best reference I have ever seen for exterior colors. The pictures are of real houses, not staged for photography and the book gives you the paint brands and numbers of the colors used on each house. Very very helpful. I found colors to paint my home I would have never thought to consider and I am a decorator. Thank you Susan!

Great Book!!

This book will be very useful to laymen and professionals for use in selection of exterior colors and materials for new houses, remodelings, and even when the house is getting re-painted.

Laymen, when re-doing their own house to whatever degree, would love the book because Ms. Hershman clearly and simply explains her points by use of examples (in beautiful photography) as well as the written word. For professionals, the book offers a collection of images and ideas that can presented to their clients so that they can understand that color is not a "paint job". Rather, exterior color is really an integrated system of materials and colors--and that system can range for the very simple to the very complex.

This book would be wonderful addition to anyone's library.

The BEST book out there

This book is destined to be a classic for professionals and novices alike. Rather than another "pretty" book to ad to the shelf, it is an extensive resource that can be used for years. If you've ever chosen a paint color only to have to change it several times, this will save your sanity and money. Susan is a professional who does the work for you. The resource section in the back of the book is amazing. If you want your house to be the one other's drive by and admire, buy this book. Bravo!

Unlike the previous reviewer, I gleened a lot of useful info from this book. Susan Smith Alvis nails down the ins and outs of purchasing real estate for first time (or second, or fifth time) home buyers. With detailed instructions on how to get your finances together, what you can afford, and how to look for loans, she makes the complicated world of the real estate transaction seem simple.

The book is sectioned into subjects such as "Looking At Your Finances", "Creative Financing" and "Foreclosures", explaining each step in the process of home ownership. Interspersed with real life examples from realtors, the chapters build on each other, culminating in the sale of the home and its aftermath. Ms. Alvis even gives a list of things to do after purchase, such as changing the locks, keeping a home journal, and advertising rental property.

This is a must read for anyone buying their first home, or anyone who is purchasing property for financial gain (such as rental homes).

Ice Under Fire was a great mystery, but in my opinion had no fire. Even though it was a sweet love story, Ken struck me as a softy, and yes there is a such thing as being to soft, and Nique as a person that did now know exactly what she wanted! But I must say the suspense and mystery was the bomb! The story started out good but quickly slowed! This book did not keep my attetion for a very long and that is why it took me a long while to finish it.

Omunique Philyaw was a figure skater. That, in itself, was amazing since her coaches had told her that she would never make it to Pro. But she did! She triumphed over childhood illness and less than zero encouragement! Skating pro was the only thing Omunique had ever wanted in her life. Now it all hinged on getting the sponsor of the athletic-wear company.

Kenneth Maxwell, Jr., had begun on the wrong foot. He had thought Omunique to be a temporary employee that he had been waiting for. And every second he pushed his foot a bit deeper into his mouth. The family company was all that mattered to him. His whole life was put into the company. But his father dumped the US Olympic Skater contract in his lap only two hours before the figure skater was due to arrive and flew out of town! Hot sparks flew the moment they met! Two hot heads that are attracted to each other, yet unable to let go of their own troubles.

WOW! This book has it all, Readers! Omunique is one classy and sassy lady! Kenneth is no slouch either! This story has a powerful message behind it of reaching for your dreams, yet still comes across with the softness of love. Highly recommended!

This book is like no other. I have a husband and two children and it was hard for me to concentrate on them as long as I was in the middle of this book. I read it in two days (Record for me). The characters were greatly detailed as far as attitude and emotions. Mrs. Hudson-Smith had to feel the characters to write such a great book. I loved the mystery as well as the romance.

Just a great book. She has encouraged me to continue my dream to write.

"Indian Shoe" is the book that shows the light at the end of a dark tunnel. There is life and hope after a disaster! This book is a story of a beautiful relationship between a boy "Ray" and his grandfather. The author of this book, artistically, pictures the current lives of Native Americans in the mind of the readers. Although there are complexities in this book, there is a unique simplicity and a calming tone to it which makes it a "good read". The reader will go through different emotions including sadness and humor while reading this book.
The six tales of this book make it an "easy read" as well. As a teacher and a school librarian, I recommend this book to my student. It also makes a great gift from a grandfather.

Subtle, funny, catch in your throat poignant, this book is one to own.

Ray learns what the biggest thing in life is.

Review Date: 2004-07-12
In this collection of six tales about a boy and his grandfather, Ray Halfmoon goes to live with his Grampa Halfmoon in Chicago after Ray's parents were killed in a tornado. They used to live in Oklahoma, and still visit Uncle Leonard and Aunt Wilhelmina once in a while, but Ray can tell that Grampa Halfmoon is very homesick and would like to go to Oklahoma more often. In the title story of these six tales, their beat-up old pickup truck has finally broken down --- there's no way it will take them to Oklahoma. Ray can't do anything about the truck and he can't afford to buy a bus ticket, so Ray is trying to figure out some way to help ease Grampa's homesickness. Would a new pair of Seminole moccasins help? Does Ray have enough money to buy them?

These short stories are written for younger readers who like rhythms and repetition in what they read. The book is divided into episodes about the lives of Ray and his Grampa Halfmoon. It shows their love for each other, and how they try to do things to help each other. Ray learns the lesson of sticking with things that he starts. And both he and Grampa have to figure out how to help the animals they're taking care of during the Christmas holidays when the electricity goes out. Eventually, Ray learns what the biggest thing in life is --- even bigger than the biggest bass in the lake.

Indian Shoes is an astonishing achievement that captures, in lyrical and sometimes magical language, the spirit and love that bonds Ray and his Grampa Halfmoon. Divided eloquently into episodes that explores their relationship and how they must bond their hearts and souls in order to retain their trust and faith and love in each other, Indian Shoes, in simple, yet powerful language, is a must read for all ages. From easing Grampa's homesickness, to figuring out how how to save the animals during a Christmas power outtage, these characters are complex-driven, fighting to retain the courage and love they have for each other while still maintaining their spiritual Native American connections. Heartfelt, almost poetic in its language, and full of moments of humor and pathos, Indian Shoes is a perfect read!

My daughter (age 6) and I loved this book, which is about the relationship between a young boy and his grandfather. What was nice about it was the unexpectedness of it. It was not the usual school or historical stories written for this age group. Rather, they are just quirky unusual tales. I also think it is great that Ms. Leitich Smith presents Native Americans not only as traditional, ritualistic people who sit around telling allegorical stories, but as a living, breathing group. As such, this book is the perfect antidote to the usual "Squanto, Friend of the Pilgrims" fare. My daughter lost her grandfather a few years ago, but Indian Shoes captures the essence of that relationship and is wonderful! We won't soon forget Ray and Grandpa Halfmoon.

A wonderful book. I initially bought a couple copies as Cristmas gifts for family members (the cover girl compelled me.) As I began to read the essays, I was so taken with the stories of these remarkable individuals that I found myself purchasing additional copies - for myself, friends and my local library. The essays bring the lives of average Americans, captains of industry and celebrities into a cohesive focus that is difficult to put down. I love it.

Perfect Photo and Story Book For Labrador People!
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2003-03-21
For someone like me who has spent countless hours, days and weeks in the company of four or more Labrador Retrievers, this book is a hoot. It takes light-hearted look at Labradors, sharing a bounty of beautiful photographs of man's best friends with us, and looking at the personality traits and character qualities that make them the single most popular breed in America today. Labs are among the most social of canines, yet they are remarkably calm and pacific once they know you. Which isn't to deny the fact that they are very active and energetic, and that anyone who lives with one needs to ensure the dog and he or she spend sopme time outside in vigorous play every day. But as the author tells us, we love labradors because they seem to represent the best and most admirable qualities we happen to admire.

Labradors are amazingly loyal, and are quite keyed into your emotional state and sense of well-being. As a person who sometimes suffers from migraines, I can attest that the dogs seem to reconize my symptoms and key their own behavior from this perception of the way I am feeling, being much more willing to simply take a nap with me than usual, since they seem to understand from past experience that the migraine will dirve me back to bed. They show many endearing and remarkable traits, and we find ourselves amazed by just how intelligent, perceptive, and attractive they are as a species.

Labradors also live almost exclusively in the moment, and are ethusiastic and energetic in their pursuit of fun and frolic. Anyone living in their company can attest to the fact that you are never at a loss for entertainment when your Labrador friend is around, and he or she are happy to just be with you, and are almost oo willing and too anxious to show you just how excited they are to have you around. Coming home after a long day's work means a kidn of instant celebration, with four Labradors jumping, barking, and wall-banging, so glad are they to have me back home with them. Find a human who is that glad to see you, and you have found true love, my friend. Yet it is all here in spades with the Labradors, and this entertaining little book will seerve to amuse you, educate you, and sometimes surprise you with its nuggets of information, parcels of knowledge, and bits of wisdom about just why it is that Labradors rule the roost around my house! Enjoy!

Just Labs is a book of few words an magnificent photography. This is not a book that will tell you how to raise your dog, or what kind of food to feed it, or what dog won best of show 10 years ago. It will amuse you and is guaranteed to sit on your desk at work, your coffee table, or your nightstand as a book that will make you smile. It is very easy to read and quite humorous. One section reads:

"Someone once said that it's possible to train a Lab by treating him like a three-year old child; if so then it's no wonder Labs and kids are so inseparable. Imagine a guardian who never sleeps, one with the eyes and ears to rival the best security system ever devised, one that knows roads are bad things and will steer your youngster away from them. At the same time, they realize that a short little kid with an ice-cream cone is like a gift from God."

If you want a fun book to just make you smile, this book is for you.

I was very much taken by the cover shot when I first saw this book on Amazon, the reviews too, seemed rather encouraging ... when the book arrived, I was expecting the rest of the photographs to be of similar or better quality ... am a little disappointed.

If this is an instructional book on how to raise or train Labradors, quality of photographs would not be so critical ... but its a pictorial book, and for some reason, quite a few of the photographs are missing that little extra ingredient which makes for really good photography ... perhaps if the photos had been more tightly edited, it might have made a difference ... At US$35 the book is not inexpensive, and there are better alternatives around ... just do a quick search, under photography and Labradors.

collection. The book is full of great photos paying equal homage to the "field" vs. "English" labs, and does not disciminate over color. His photography skills capture the personalities of the breed, and the depth of the relationships between dog and handler. The captions are perfect, and some will bring a tear to the eye of even the most stoic of us all.

The book is slanted toward field work, domestic life and hunting activities, rather than conformance or obedience work. My husband loved this as a gift, and he is nearly impossible to buy for. All in all, though, it is a beautiful tribute to this remarkable breed.

Ask any photography instructor, and he will say, "I don't want to see any puppy and kitty pictures!" How wrong they are. Dale does a great job of presenting the working Lab in everyday situations, from the field trial to the duck blind and the upland field, and he does it with a great sense of humor.

This book, however, is not a training manual. If you're wondering how to train Labs to do what Dale shows them doing, check out Mike Gould's "The Labrador Shooting Dog". Another great look at working Labs is Paul and Julie Knutsons' "The Pointing Labrador." Both books have great photographs of Labs in action, by the way, and the training techniques to back them up.

The complex domain of US - Cuban relations is changing every day, with new developments on both sides in terms of policy, which in turn affect the Cuban economy, society in Cuba, perspectives for future change, etc. Nevertheless, this book already back in 1997, managed to set an excellent framework on the theme of US - Cuban relations on the long term. Contrary to what one might expect, the fact that five years have now elapsed, has not made this book outdated. On the contrary, we can see indeed that some of the author's predictions became reality. Altogether, even today this remains a great book as a starting point to approach and study this fascinating and ever-changing topic. For sure, a new edition could add some interesting information to this study. Yet, for the purposes it sets itself, this book is still very very up-to-date and topical, and will likely remain so even after Castro is gone. While being an academic book in the field of political sciences and international relations more specifically, this is also a book about history, and as such will be invaluable for scholars of Cuban history at any time.

In such a short book, with indeed only three chapters besides the introduction and conclusions, the author has managed to put together, in a concise and excellently presented way, the facts and data of which the reader must be made aware, the various possible interpretations of these facts, as well as the author's own interpretations and analysis. The book is an excellent review of existing material on the subject (a great amount of research and critique has obviously gone into it), as well as a wonderful analysis of this material, with the addition of original material from the Cuban media and interviews, and the author's own points of view, which are always presented against any possible counter-arguments. All in all, a great start for anyone who would like to explore the exciting subject of US
- Cuban relations.

Review Date: 2001-10-06
In this brief yet dense academic study, the author manages not only to expose data and propose his views on the issue, but also to capture the reader's analysis in a way that few very academic books can. While it tells of the intricate relation between the US embargo against Cuba and what happens in the island, the book also tells a lot on the repression of Castro's regime over. With crystal clarity and even some razor-sharp sarcasm, the author manages to identify some crucial features which make Cuban society unique, which can in fact be traced back to the horrible effects of US policy on the Cuban people, ensued by Castro's manipulation of this. All in all, Cuban policy can often be regarded as a big farce. While we condemn Castro's dictatorship or / and the US embargo, and in either case we share the suffering of the Cuban people, this book helps us see all this in a thrilling new light, filled with some witty humour and a good deal of sarcasm, making the book wonderful reading altogether.

A perfect balance of comprehensiveness and conciseness

In this book, a variety of issues are approached thoroughfully and rigorously, yet in the most concise possible way. For those approaching this subject for the first time, and for experts alike, this book is an invaluable source of information, insights, and analysis. It is filled with sound arguments and interpretations, always accompanied by counter-arguments and alternative views. The author has done a great job in expressing with such fairness and impartiality his views on the Cuba - US conflict, views which are indeed an 'average' of those held by most foreign academics and world governments. Its third chapter, on the impact of the US embargo on Cuba's relations with third countries, is especially interesting and contains a lot of original material. By all means, this book is necessary reading for all those working on the subject.

I really liked the story Lady Lollipop. The story is about a spoiled princess. Her mother and father gave her whatever she wanted. On her eighth birthday she wanted a pig. Her mother and father did not like pigs; they thought pigs were disgusting animals. Finally, they agreed to give her a pig for her eighth birthday, because she was spoiled and they gave her anything she wanted.

The owner of the pig she chose was an orphan boy. The pig was the only thing he had, and the princess felt pity for him. So, she asked if he wanted to come live with her in the palace and take care of the pig. The boy gladly agreed to go live with the pricess in the palace.

The boy taught the pig to do many things, and he wondered if he could teach the princess to think more about other people. One day the princess did begin to think more about other people.

My favorite part of the story was when the princess picked her pig. It was cool that the boy, who was very nice, told her all about the pig.

I am seven and a half years old, and I read this story myself. The story was just right for me. I read alot and would generally suggest a good reader of seven years or older could read it (a few words were difficult, but I could still understand the story). This would also be good story for a parent to read aloud.

I said this review out loud to my dad, who typed it in for me.

Thanks!

I have a five-year-old who is a voracious reader. It's hard to find chapter books that have content appropriate to her age but are still substantial enough to draw her in...and that she can't polish off in one sitting! Lady Lollipop has a wonderfully playful, fairy-tale feeling that fits the bill perfectly. I loved hearing my daughter burst into laughter as she read the book.

The princess gets a pig for her birthday but the queen doesn't like it. The queen thinks it's dirty. This book is about figuring out ways for the queen to like the pig. I think this is a very, very funny book, because there are three pictures of poo-poo.

I am 9 years old and I found this very easy to read.

What more could you want from a book? Collard's LOVE, LUST AND A WHOLE LOTTA DISTRUST gives you entertainment and teaches you the valuable lesso of loving yourself and walking in that truth. She gives you characters that are no different from the person sitting next to us or looking at us in mirror--and she allows you to see what comes from now being honest with yourself and others. Throw in the social issues of sexuality, abuse and putting others before yourself, and you have a book that will stand the test of time.

Love, Lust and A whole Lotta Distrust by DeiIra Smith Collard. For this novel I think the author and I must have met somewhere down the line. Because I know all the people featured in her novel.

Nicole, NaTina and Kendra and all the encompassing drama associated with these ladies. Cheating spouses, cheating lovers, about the only consistency with the characters is all the cheating going on.

At any rate this was a good book. Definately keeps you involved in the story and the characters.

DeiIra Smith Collard's book "Love Lust & A Whole Lotta Distrust" started off with a band and ended with a bigger bang!!!! She told a tale of four women who work together and some of them even play together. Then comes the betrayal and the decit. It keeps you on your toes and wanting more from the start. Just wonderfully written!

Thanks for sharing DeiIra!

Thank you for calling Synergy Wireless. If it's drama and scandal that you want, it's drama and scandal that you'll get.

Employees Nicole, Kendra, Carmell and Natina all crossed the line of co-workers to friends, but it's a decision they all may come to regret.

Nicole Neatherly wants what she wants and what she wants is call center cutie Jason. Despite the fact that he has bedded practically everyone in their department, Nicole thinks she is the woman for him. The woman that will change his whorish ways. The one woman he will want to settle down with. And Nicole wants him at all cost and is willing to do whatever it takes, no matter what or who it hurts, even a friend.

Kendra Dubois has a secret; a dirty little secret. She has her cake and wants to eat it, too. Trouble is, she won't be the only one affected by her crave for something sweet. Just how far reaching are the effects of Kendra's explosive secret?

Carmell Devereaux is head over heels in love. She has found the man she is going to marry, the man of her dreams. Little does she know that he may not be the man of just her dreams. Will the best woman win?

Natina Mayes doesn't get mad, she gets even. When her advances toward a fellow employee are rejected, all is fair in love and revenge. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.

True to the title, there was plenty of love, lust and distrust. Drama was good and plenty. I hated to see it come to an end. Newcomer DeiIra Smith-Collard has delivered an impressive debut. This very entertaining and emotionally charged novel is a gem. DeiIra is definitely an author to watch.

Thank you for choosing Synergy Wireless. Have a nice day!

Judge Smith's riveting and suspenseful novel is so realistic that it brought back fond memories of my early days as a young prosecutor in L.A. County's criminal justice system. Congratulations to Judge Smith for winning the First Place $1000 prize from www.jadapress.com for Best Fiction Book. Judge Smith is to be commended for writing a superb novel that makes easy reading for lay persons.

Judge Smith calls upon his vast experience as a hands-on Municipal and Superior Court judge to create a vivid, realistic picutre of how the courts actually work at the municipal court level. Very informative and entertaining. I recommend it highly.

I read "The Magistrates" over the Thanksgiving holiday and thoroughly enjoyed each and every page of it. For me it was a real "page turner."

The more I read the more it seemed to become a novel about real flesh and blood human beings-three of whom happened to be judges.

It was also a nice trip down memory lane.

Judge Smith also captured the changing mores of the times vividly.

I truly enjoyed The Magistrates. The three main characters were well done. The ending was terrific. I like the villainous to get theirs in the end and the good to triumph. I never thought you could write sex scenes - but yet another surprise. It took me back to 1974 when I was a run deputy D.A. for L.A. County where I spent 4 weeks in Alhambra trying hpye cases and DUI's.

A very enjoyable read. Judge Smith gives us a glimpse of parallel worlds - public hallways/courtrooms and private corridors/judicial chambers. Lawyers and non-lawyers will have fun reading about Southern California in the late 60s. Highly recommended.
