The middle book is always darker

Wm. Mark Simmons has a winner with When Dreams Collide, the second novel in his trilogy of In the Net of Dreams, When Dreams Collide, and The Woman of His Dreams. In the first novel, Simmons sets up a fantasy within a science fiction framework and fills a medieval landscape with a cast of fascinating characters. In the second novel, When Dreams Collide, Simmons begins to delve into the hearts of his characters, revealing both the saint and the sinner that resides in us all. His main character, Ripley, is trying to understand the Anamoly and fix it. If he doesn't, anyone whose avatar dies in the Dreamworld dies in the suspension tank back at Cephtronics, as well. It makes the game a bit more serious. The problem is, Ripley has been copied by the computer that runs the Dreamworld, and so he gets to die several times. Those Ripleys who are stil alive get to worry if the real Ripley got killed--which means that Ripley back at Cephtronics is dead and the Ripley who is doing the wondering is just a back-up copy, or is he...? And then Ripley also has problems with women (too many)and enemies (way too many)and not quite knowing whether he's real or Memorex. Finally, the novel is a bit darker than In the Net of Dreams, because it's a middle novel, and it's supposed to be darker. His third novel in the series, The Woman of His Dreams, will be published sometime this year (according to his website--check it out. It's hilarious) and will wrap the series up, answer all the questions, and, if the first two novels are any indication--be filled with obscure literary references, outrageous jokes, horrid puns, and more fun per page than most writers manage to pack in an entire novel.

An fan of VR would love to include this book in their library. The dangers of an unstable computer world seem uncannily real in this novel that takes rpg to the extreme. The main character, Ripley, is so deep you can truly feel his joys and sorrows. If you like cyberpunk, you'll really like When Dreams Collide!

The nice thing about this series is that it's fantasy with a big touch of realism. It is computer rpg to the extreme. But what really sets it apart is the humor, the witty and fast storytelling, twists in the story, all with a well dosed pace. Reading the first book "In the net of dreams" is not necessary, but would let you better enjoy this story more.

Good Fun.

It would be better to read "In the net of dreams" first. If you have ever played RPG/MUDS and have enjoyed them, this would be one of your dreams.

I bought this book because I wanted to learn how to make those mouth watering roasted dishes one sees on TV. The book has tons of recipes sorted in different categories like starters, fish, poultry, meats, vegetables, etc. The book starts by explaining the basics of roasting and the utensils you'll need. The recipes are easy to follow and explicit enough to know how wide to cut the ingredients for example. All this without extending more than necessary. I particularly like the BIG, colorful and sharp pictures that come with every recipe. It has helped me get an idea on how the dish should look like. Not all steps have a picture, only those that are prone to confusion do.

I have made several recipes from the book and the feedback has been very positive, and I'm not an expert or anything. Based on this I'm thinking of buying more books from this author and/or publisher.

This is the best book to have during the winter season. It gives good homely recipes for making chicken, fish and vegetables...I especially LOVED the brine method it gave for the chicken. I combined that recipe with another one in it which used roast garlic to stuff the skin with. The chicken came out so moist and delicious! I have a bunch of recipes bookmarked from it...do try the flash roast tomatoes, easy to put together and wonderful in salads and pasta!

If you are brand new to this topic, like I was, this is the book for you. It's easy to read and you will be left with a great overall understanding of the process. You can use the capitalization rate method to ballpark a value for your business in minutes. I've since gone on to order several other books that will hopefully expand on the topics covered. However, I'm 100% confident that this book should be the starting point for everyone new to this topic. And, I could now entertain offers for my business confidently, without getting out gunned, overwhelmed, or low balled by experienced business buyers, including individuals investors or brokers. On top of that, I know precisely how to expand my business value by hundreds of thousands this year 2008!

After ten years as a bank underwiriter for small businesses, I am very impressed at how this book distills a great deal of information down and puts it all in one place. If you are planning on buying or selling a business, are a beginning or experienced entrepreneur, or are just interested in what makes a business valuable or not, this surprising book is for you.

I tried the Microsoft Press, returned it. Tried the Sybex, returned it. Finally found this gem written by Curt Simmons from a publisher (Prentice Hall) not known for their Certification books. This book has all that you need to pass the exam and none of the junk that waste your time. This author has done what Sybex and Microsoft couldn't, write an easy to understand book with the material you need to help you achieve a great passing score in minimal time. I'd give this book a 6 stars if it was possible.

Like to book claims, 'Pass Microsoft's Active directory exam with flying colors!'. This book is well-organized, containing only relevant information that you need. The book is only 300 pages and the content is written in a easy to understand format(short chapters). Curt Simmons knows his exams, he stresses design considerations rather than 'how-to configure the OS' stuff which is not on the exam and justs wastes your time. The 5 case studies included (although not as complex as the real thing) gets you familiar with the format and helps you identify the info that is important for answering the question(s). Also comes with a Training CBT and companion website. I highly recommend this book for preparing for 70-219, if you can find it as availability is scarce.

In a class by itself

There seems to be no shortage of books about covered bridges these days. This one distinguishes itself by the quality of the descriptions of the bridges and Bill Miller's outstanding photography. It is in a class by itself! Judged by the photography alone it would appear to be at home on the "coffee table". However, to classify it as such would do the book a disservice. The quality of the text makes it much more worthy.

Ohio bridges are the centerpieces based on their numbers, although the other two states are done justice as well. Miriam Wood is the matriarch of Ohio covered bridges and has published an earlier more historically detailed book on this subject. David Simmons is author of several scholarly publications on historic bridges and is editor of Timeline, the spectacular color publication of the Ohio Historical Society. If you have just one book on the covered bridges of this region (or perhaps any region), this should be the one.

This book is a must. It got me going on silkscarves. The pictures are excellent and the author explains everything in detail, very easy to follow. I ended up teaching marbling and making trays for marbling for my students, being a teacher in Acrylic and Oil painting beforehand.
Unfortunately we are a bit handicapped in getting certain products here in Australia, which are easy to buy in the USA, but through trial and error I found some shortcuts and thanks to this book and 2 others, which I bought from Amazon, my scarves are in great demand.

This is a wonderful how-to book for the novice or advanced fabric "marbler." Easy to read, step-by -step instructions will help the beginner get set up, order supplies, prepare fabrics, mix colors and have a very successful time with this great fabric decorating technique. The advanced reader will see 15 beautiful color plates of marbling examples, and diagrams to reproduce them. In addition, I especially enjoyed reading the brief history of marbling. The Appendix and Resources section are very helpful. I plan to introduce this project to my students and this book will be an invaluable resource!

She walks you thru marbling step by step. And then provides some inspiration for project and a great resourse list on where to find supplies.

Centuries of research and medical insights have contributed to the fundamental principles of today's medical and research practices: Doctors & Discoveries is dedicated to the pioneers who made these initial medical discoveries. Key figures in medicine from past to present are detailed in a collective biography of medical history chronicling their lives and achievements. Solid links are drawn between discoveries, discoverers, and how today's health practitioners work.

A splendid book for writers, doctors, scientists, reference librarians and any educated reader who wants to understand the history of medicine through the biographies of its chief proponents. From Paracelsus and Harvey to Koch and Gallo, this is a highly readable history.

Many unfamiliar names lie behind numerous major discoveries and the reader is in for a real education discovering the pioneers of molecular biology, enzyme chemistry, viral theories of cancer, medical education, electrocardiography, cellular immunity and much more. A pefect gift for the young daughter or son who is looking forward to a medical career.

Great book on physicians as explorers/inventors!
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2002-06-26
I am always on the look out for decent books that can be used to teach students about phenomenal lives and mentors. This book accurately fills that need. Most of the physicians in this book were also researchers before scientific research was even a field. Many of these men (they are mostly men) came from backgrounds that were not particularly conducive to doing medicine, let alone the research that they ended up doing. Their families were not aristrocratic or learned, many had fathers who were tradesmen...yet for some reason, they chose to enter fields of medicine. Medicine was not always the prestigious field or career that it is now. Often, it was looked down upon, especially prior to its consolidation as a science. The work that these men did helped to raise the prestige of medicine, anatomy, physiology, and neuroscience.

Medicine, like most sciences, is a long ongoing process of learning. Not just about the body, but about what chemicals and what therapies are going to work for individuals. One of the things that this book makes clear is that those who succeeded in furthering medical knowledge all possessed great curiosity as well as often possessing great courage. So many times, these guys had to buck the current establishment, whether it was clergy, current medical knowledge (often dating back to Greece even in the Middle Ages and during the Renaissance), and even governmental authority.

This book is well-written, and provides a lot of diverse stories about medical achievement mainly in European countries. There are a few chapters dedicated to women and only a couple involving men from the Middle East, none from the Orient. The author does bring up alternative medicine, but since I can think of several other medical discoveries and physician/inventors from parts of the non-European world that could and should be mentioned, I think this book should be followed by another including the inspiring stories from the rest of the world. All children and all adolescents, need to see mentors, scientists, and physicians that are like them; that it is possible to achieve in this area no matter where you are from, what gender or race or ability you have. This book is a critical and good start, but it is essential to take it farther...

It's important for kids to have diverse meanings for the word 'hero'. With so many in the sports world, in the world of entertainment, and now in the business world providing bad examples, it is paramount that teachers and parents provide alternatives to these people as to what actually constitutes a 'hero'. So many in the media and in government lambast how poorly our students are doing in science and math education, yet part of the problem lies in the fact that adults are not providing good examples of what is important and what is not. This book helps to place this critical emphasis back on the importance of intelligence, of creativity, and of compassion for fellow human beings. A truly vital book to have for educators and those who would be mentors.

In this story, Ebb becomes the whipping boy (or dog) when she is falsely accused of eating the picnic before the others could have any. Ebb goes off to sulk in the rowing boat that unfortunately starts drifting out to sea. Eventually the truth is discovered (it's the gulls all along!!) and Ebb, now safely back on terra firma, is forgiven.

What a delightful story.

Ebb is a dog and Flo, a girl of 6-9 years old is her owner. They picnic at the beach, and seagulls steal their lunch. Flo blames Ebb, and Ebb, who is innocent, goes to sulk in their boat. A storm drives the boat out to sea and it crashes on some rocks. When Flo recovers Ebb, she apologizes for falsely accusing her dog. Pastel illustrations capture the mood and delight the eye with textures that will make one feel he or she is at the beach. Young readers will identify with Ebb, if they have been falsely accused, and it will spark memories of joyful trips to the shore.

So what do you do after you've begged all of your friends to come over and take bags of figs home, made fig-strawberry jam, eaten figs with cheese until you can't any more, and still have piles on the tree and higher piles on the ground? You run out and buy the Fig Heaven cookbook of course! With 70 excellent recipes, you will surely find many an excellent idea, from fig pinenut pasta to fig, green tomato, purple onion salad. Of course, you will still have enough figs so that your friends can take home all they want, but you will also fill your summer table with delectable dishes!

An absolutely incredible book on figs - from the mythical and biblical history to the botany and cultivation to the recipes, Fig Heaven is the definitive fig cookbook. For those of us without access to fresh figs on a regular (if ever) basis, Simmons supplies recipes that utilize a number of dried figs that are available year round in most larger grocery and specialty stores. Recipes are easy to follow and very good! From simple salads, desserts and even preserves to my favorite dinner (chicken, couscous, and dried fig salad with toasted almonds)Simmons covers a range of tastes and styles.

A fabulous gift book, especially if you can give it along with a young fig tree! Perfect for a new home owner or newlywed!
