A lovely romance

I really enjoyed this book. The hero, Justin, was just gorgeous, and the heroine, Clare, though not quite as great, was ultimately likeable and sweet. It is a childhood sweethearts becoming lovers kind of story: Justin is a young libertine when Clare, young and innocent, captures his heart with fairy tales and dreams. Unwilling to spoil her innocence, though, he refuses to marry her when her father wants him to propose. Four years later, they meet again and do get married. They are made for each other, and seeing them fall in love all over again was beautiful. The sexual tension is incredible! The last section, in which a murder mystery is solved, was somewhat weaker, but didn't mar my enjoyment. THE SQUIRE'S DAUGHTER really is a wonderful little book by a talented author.

Worst Heroine Ever

Clare Cummings is one of the worst "heroine's" I have ever read. She was such a poor excuse of a bride I hoped Justin would leave her! Sure, romances need plot. And I have to admit I find the bride who won't sleep with her husband really boring. But Clare said she wanted to have a real marriage but she sure went about it in a crazy way.

bad, bad, bad

I have enjoyed previous books by Deborah Simmons, but this one was truly awful. Our heroine, Clare Cummings met Justin St. John when she was 14 and fell in love with him, an established rake. For 2 years, she sneaks into his castle when he is in town and they have a friendly relationship, but she thinks he is her prince and loves him. Her dad finds out, threatens Justin and tells him he needs to marry her and he refuses. Clare finds out and runs to talk to him but finds him in bed with one of her maids. Flash forward 2 years and she is in London for the season. She meets him again but thinks she hates him. He, however, finds out she is to marry an evil man and to protect her, steals her away to Scotland to marry. She does so but spends a 100 pages or so refusing his marital rights because she can not get the picture of him in bed with her maid out of her mind. Then why marry him? Before they married, he told her she could live anywhere and he would always take care of her but she said that she wanted a real marriage and he agreed. She demanded he give up drinking, gambling, other women and they would have to live in the falling down castle. One day she comes upon him without his shirt and she nearly kills him. It was hard to read, how foolish she was. It was so immature and illogical that I wish Ms. Simmons had perhaps made her older, or something in which a reader could relate to. He tells her he loves her but does not matter for too many pages. Painful read...

Review Date: 2007-01-09
The solutions manual is fine, with a clear analysis of the problems discussed in the text. I thought that more problems should have been
looked into, but many math books don't provide solutions to all of the problems they offer. Answers help those trying to fully understand the text material. We shouldn't be working in the dark when we try to solve the problems.

This text is expensive and pointless. While it is obviously designed for upper division courses, it lacks concrete examples and a clear thought pattern. Sections do not seem to connect in a comfortable way and they should be much longer. The odd-numbered solutions pages at the end are a joke; most say "proof not shown." Do not buy.

If you are only going to read one book on this subject, I'd suggest Nothing Like It In the World : The Men Who Built the Transcontinental Railroad 1863-1869 or Empire Express: Building the First Transcontinental Railroad. Galloway died in 1943, and his work has often been used as a source for the more recent books in the field, like those just mentioned. However, for anyone with a deeper interest in the subject, this is a treasure-trove of detail. Galloway was a prominent civil engineer with much railroad experience, and he brings a unique perspective to the subject.

As DecemberGirl notes in passing (above), the author of this book is NOT the Gene Simmons who founded Kiss. If you were to click on "show all reviews," you would see an author's biography that states, "Gene Simmons' life experiences began (a long time ago) on a farm in the fertile Platte River valley of south central Nebraska..." So, if you are looking for advice from "The Demon," this isn't it. Caveat emptor, K?

i might note that i am not yet done reading this, as i have its companion books also. i'd like to add, that before you buy this, if you're a fan of Gene Simmons (KISS front man and author), he is NOT the one who wrote these books. it is ANOTHER person. that having been said, i still am enjoying these books nonetheless.

the information in these books is nothing particularly earth shattering, but the book is nice because it's not very long and i like the way Mr. Simmons relates to the reader in a very personal fashion. it's like you were sitting and having a conversation, one on one, with a good friend.

I normally swear by the Exam Cram series. I used the CCNP series (all four books) and passed all four tests the first time. So when I went to order a book for my next test - Network Design, I got the Exam Cram one. Errors abound, half the questions don't make sense, some of the explanations are flat out wrong - The author states that a test-taking guideline is to not include anything not specified as a requirement in the case studies, then proceeds to break it in the answer to the next test case study with no explanation. This was going to be a key study, because with the Microsoft tests you have to learn the Microsoft way of viewing the topic. How MS designs networks is alien to any other network design, so what they believe is the key to passing their tests. This book failed to be clear on what MS wants their network design to be. The book covers all the topics, but it needs more explanations as to which design rules MS follows and less errors and inane questions.

I passed the exam 70-221 on the first try by using this book among others, it gives a fairly good preparation it covers all the topics of the exam, but I found the exam very difficult and need a lot of experience and of course this book is not enough to pass, I frequently buy exam cram for my preparation for certification exams but I found this book below average, not enough in depth in some areas, have errors and I didn't like the wording of the questions (not enough details to make a choice between 2 right answers) . I gave 3 stars for the material but this book could be done better.

I have to review this poorly even though I am one of the contributing authors. "Vivisections" was sold to contributing authors as a seemingly good small-press idea. Royalty payments without payment up-front, but at least a chance to see more fresh work from many good authors.

Instead, Monica O'Rourke as head of Gauntlet Press ran everything into the ground, mis-spent the funds she got, didn't pay the print company promptly, has been suspected of a number of dubious money handlings, and ultimately just lied and cheated and then cried for clemency on the part of the rest of us who were really robbed. Then William Simmons, the editor and supposed advocate for the authors, ran and hid behind his friends rather than take any real responsibility either.

Ultimately, this collection as a literary effort was good and should be applauded for the attempt on the part of the writers. But the works in it should hopefully appear in other legitimate publications, and you shouldn't spend any money on this collection as nothing ever went to those who were really responsible for making it exist. The publisher and editor of this collection committed a lousy act of literary larceny and nobody should continue to validate or support it by buying even used and over-priced copies of it.

The Horror Inside

Review Date: 2003-05-04
There is a thing these days when it comes to anthologies that gets on my nerves. It seems that they always have to have some sort of theme to link the stories together. That's why I was so pleased with William P. Simmons's Vivisections; this is one anthology that isn't about theme. It isn't about trying to link the stories together in a coherent way. It's about presenting great horror stories that touch the entire spectrum.

Here, you will find horror's top new voices (and some old ones) doing what they do best: scare us. The best stories in this one come from Scott Nicholson (Doomsday's Diary), Gary A. Braunbeck (Duty), Tim Lebbon (Unto Us) and Michael Laimo (The Rash). These are four of the best authors in the field right now, and their stories are not to be missed. See the pros at their very best.

But an anthology is also a great way to discover new talents, a thing Vivisections did quite well. Simon Wood's Warning Signs is a fun, holds-no-barrels story that delivers the goods. Ron J. Horsley's The Theater At The End Of The World is a nostalgic piece that is both dream and haunting. And Dean H. Wild's The Kid is a very affecting little story that is powerful on a psychological level.

It's rare to find an anthology where you can call all the stories good or great. There isn't a single bad story in this one; just a few stories that are a little less good compared to the amazing ones to be found in these pages.

Vivisection is the first of what will probably become one of horror's most celebrated anthologies. Don't let the first installment pass you by. There is a piece for every taste in this great anthology.

The International Terrorists Game.

Review Date: 2005-05-17
This series of POWER PLAYS created by Tom Clancy and Martin Greenburg include Ruthless. com, Politika, Wild Card, Cutting Edge, Zero Hour, and Cold War. SHADOW WATCH is based on an interactive computer game by Red Storm, woned by Tom Clancy, Virtus Corp. and Pearson plc. The cover of this one has the "all-seeing eye" blown from the top of the pyramid used in the movie 'National Treasure' as a space shuttle.

Orion, an international space station had been developed, and on April 15, 2001 (this novel was printed in 1999),a spacecraft from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, was sabotaged a few seconds before lift-off. The disaster was the death of the mission commander, Jim, as it exploded and burned. This had been achieved by terrorists who wanted to install an electromagnetic pulse generator which was capable of destroying major American cities from space.

Mr. Clancy has written man other books including RED STORM RISING, WITHOUT REMORSE, THE TEETH OF THE TIGER, THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER, CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER, PATRIOT GAMES and series called OP-CENTER AND one featuring Jack Ryan. His non-fiction books include SUBMARINE, MARINE, CARRIER, AIRBORNE, FIGHTER WING, and ARMORED CALVARY.

As this is the first Tom Clancy read, although I have several movies based on his books, suck as The Hunt for the Red October, Patriot Games, and Clear and Present Danger.

Although I thought his writing was good and was a cliff-hanger like feeling throughout the book, as I read other reviews I guess his other books must have been alot better.

Anyways some of the sub-plots were well written and were interesting (urchin diving with Tom Ricci), they only showed he was tough and the man for the job, but took to many pages to show it. Also the train wreck took to long to explain with insignificant people who just died in the end. It was important to the fact that the Terroists weapon was ready for use, but the extant to the wreck was explained was un-necessary.

The whole part in Russia where the guerrilas buy the HMD or whatever is still kind of hazy as to what actually happened.

This was a 3 hour book on tape and after being regaled for more than half an hour with all of the details of a battle in which I neither knew who was fighting or why they were fighting I decided that I'd had enough.

These Clancy rip-off story lines only go to show that Clancy has a special talent for developing characters when he actually writes the books. It also shows that he has a special talent for soaking up the cash wherever he can. What a con - let Clancy creates the characters and let hacks write the books for him!

Please, don't waste your time!

I bought the Abridged CD version. There were no tracks on the CD. Therefore, if you stopped listening, you would have to search the entire CD to determine where you left off. A 70 minute disk needs several breaks.

The story was abridged. Whoever did the production should look for another job. The first third of the novel was almost impossible to comprehend. I read/listen to approximately 5 books per week. This one was one of the worst editing jobs I have come across.

The story itself was a major reach. There was little or no character development.

I will not waste my time on any more series inspired books by Clancy.

Somewhat disappointing

Review Date: 2003-02-15
Well, this book wasn't terrible, but it could have been much better. Definately doesn't live up to Politika or Ruthless.com, let alone the plethera of other Clancy novels. The biggest problem I had with this book was the fact that the characters never seemed to get their act together. They spent all but the last 60 or so pages of the book doing almost nothing. It seemed like for the first 250-300 pages, maybe two hours had passed in the world. To make matters worse, the ending wasn't even very glorious, for lack of a better word. It was like the good guys foil the plot, and a low monotonous "yay" murmers from the audience. An entire chapter was also spent describing a train wreck that should have been summed up in about 3 paragraphs tops. He basically described a couple hundred innocent people dying, and it had no real impact on the story WHAT-SO-EVER.

I don't really know much about how Clancy is doing buisness, but I see people saying he fathered the series and sold it out to other authors. All I have to say is that it doesn't speak very highly of Clancy as an author to let authors nobody has heard of write books in his name and not even check to see if they're on par with his original works. I found it disappointing overall.

However, if you've never read any Clancy novels, the Powerplay series might be a good one to start out on. You may expierence disappointment from Politika and Ruthless to Shadow Watch and other books in the series, but you definately won't be disappointed when you start reading other Clancy novels like Without Remorse and Clear and Present Danger.

The description of this book should have said something about what size rice cooker all the recipes are for. Once I started reading the book, I discovered all the recipes are made for an 8-10 cup cooker. I would not have purchased the book if I had known this. I bought a 3-cup cooker when I bought this book, and I can't figure out how to scale down the recipes to fit in my cooker. So, the book is basically useless to me.

This book is nothing compared to Beth Hensperger and Julie Kaufmann book. This one leans more towards convenience but most of the recipes in here you can find in other variations online. There is nothing inventive about it. Beware, this book is a barely updated version of Simmon's other book "Versatile Rice Cooker". I bought both thinking they were different, but they are almost exactly the same.

The answer is, of course not! But, if I hadn't gotten this book, I would not have known. There's a recipe for rice cooker apple juice oatmeal, which my family just loves. Tastes like dessert. There's all kinds of steamed vegetables, with times and how to cook. Other grains recipes. Delicious rice recipes. If you're getting a rice cooker, I'd suggest you get this book.

Tepid Romance with annoying characters

Review Date: 2007-11-12
From the back cover-

To save the family manor, Viscount Leighton Somerset was forced to snare a wealthy wife, and the lovely Melissa Hampton was his target. Her coolness toward fortune hunters had earned her the title "Lady Disdain," but Leighton wasted no time in warming the girl up to the idea of wedlock.

Though hard experience had trained Melissa to evade charmers like Leighton, the clever man had soon maneuvered her straight into matrimony. Accepting her fate, Melissa was now tempted to relax the careful guard around her heart. But someone was still stalking her -in deadly earnest- and it appeared to be her husband.....

I have read several of Simmons books and have really loved them, but not this one! BLECH! The writing here is wonderful as usual but the characters are down right irritating. I don't think that I liked a SINGLE character in this book. SERIOUSLY!

First of all the Melissa is too icy, giving everyone the "look" with her chin jutting up in the air. She is constantly ranting and raving like a shrew too. I understand that in the beginning she must keep up the facade in order to weed out the fortune hunters but after she falls in love and is married -what's the point? Can't she melt a little bit more? Acting like that just exasperates her image.

Secondly the Leighton is just blah. He's a bona fide mister average and definitely boring. I don't know about anyone else who reads romance but I want my hero's to be passionate -about something at least! Supposedly he a fine art connoisseur. Then why didn't he, after the marriage, try to buy back all the paintings that were sold to pay off his father's debts? And he's none too intelligent either! I won't even tell you how many attempts were made on the Melissa's life before Leighton figured out that they were not just "accidents". And he didn't seem that panicked that his wife almost died -several times! I understand that that its Simmons way of trying to make us believe that maybe Leighton is the villain. But really! In what ROMANCE does the hero try to kill the heroine? They don't call it a happily-ever-after-ending for nothing. SHEESH!

His father is an idiot too. A gambler and a drunk who is portrayed by the author as some harmless cuddly old man. Hello! Leighton is, in fact, in this situation BECAUSE of his fathers lack of restraint. And does ANYBODY do anything about it? NO. The father is simply patted on the head and allowed to drown himself in spirits, women and gambling. WHAT?!?

The only hope I had was for the villains. There is one particular lady that just oozes the jealous ex personality. She is just nasty! But her ending is just flat and completely disappointing.

The absolute worst was the ending. A secondary romance is revealed thats really just laughable. And also a twist that left me quite annoyed. Not at all satisfying.

Skip this and read The Vicar's Daughter, The Devil Earl, or Tempting Kate instead.
