I named my daughter, her middle name, after Nicholas' sister, Aisley. That is how much I enjoy this novel. I have read and re-read this book more times than I can count.

Sometimes revenge can go too farReview Date: 2008-01-03
This is probably the best medieval revenge book that I've ever read. The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five is because of the absolutely ridiculous reason for the revenge. Why would Nicholas punish a completely innocent woman? A woman whom he knows never knew her own uncle. I know he gave the reason of her having 'tainted blood' and all that, but I just don't buy it. So I tried to ignore that aspect of the book and enjoy the wonderful characterizations and increasing sexual tension.
Recommended. If you like this type of medieval I suggest you read other Simmons books such as the De Burgh series.
A sweet, desperate-in-love, bullying lout and his maiden bride...Review Date: 2008-09-23
Nicholas de Laci has a single minded need for vengeance that is a little annoying. He's either brooding or yelling and it gets old sometimes. I liked him, but geez, shut up. Gillian tries to make the best of her situation but I think she was a little too much of a doormat. True, there's not much she can do when her lord of the castle husband lays down his feudal law, but still, there was always that nightshade option. Just a little sprinkle and then all her problems would be over.
Gillian calls Nicholas a selfish ba*t*rd several times over in this book and it's true. He is. He has this childish need to keep her only for himself that overrides all common sense. He refuses to let her out of the bedroom, refuses to let her take over her duties of chatelaine, refuses to let her help the sick. She is to live only for him and no one else is to come between them. It's almost as if he wants to stick her in his pocket and cart her around wherever he goes. The more onerous of his plans he does not carry out against her but just reading about his inner musings was enough for me to want to break out the poison. He is a little one dimensional with his constant drivel about vengeance but it's okay because it just lets Gillian shine more in this revenge tale. She is a brave, proud and hardworking woman who is doing the best she can, saddled with her lout of a husband. She's courageous yet vulnerable and when she stands up to Nicholas, it's priceless. Their ranting and raving at each other is also priceless. Since I'm a ranter and raver myself, I enjoyed reading about their fights.
Even though it probably sounds like I didn't like this book, I did. It was an amusing read with plenty of laugh out loud moments, most of them at Nicholas' expense. Even though he comes across as this domineering, hateful man, half of the book is spent with him trying to please his wife in his own bumbling, misguided way. So he's redeemed in my eyes. He may be a bullying lout, but he was a sweet, desperate in love, bullying lout, so I forgive him. :)

I wonder if Simmons will ever write about the last two brothers, Reynold and Nicholas? I'd really love to read their stories, especially Reynold's.

The sad part is that without a current publisher Simmons will never be able to publish Reynold & Nicolas' stories.
I hold out hope that someday the right person will want these published and will have the power to do something about it.

Marriage is a Curse?Review Date: 2002-07-12
This is a delightful tale, very humourous dialog and a bit of a mystery to solve. It's great to see Robin the young man, with some childlike notions - finally come into his own and grow up to be a real man!
Again, this novel stands on it's own - but is terrific when read along with the series.

Fascinating Stories of Human Endurance and SurvivalReview Date: 2006-12-06
I think that people probably gave it 4 stars because they expect it to be about living in paradise - or expect modern stories (as a previous reader wrote). Actually, the book is about people stranded and the struggle against nature to survive.
It is well-written and provides a captivating look at people and survival.
For example, one of the stories is about the a ship captain who rescued 33 British men, women and children near the Falkland Islands in 1812 when their ship ran aground. Although the US and Brits were newly at war, the Brits to signed a document agreeing to "be at peace" while the captain rescued them. However, while he and a few shipmates were hunting for food for the Brits, the "castaways" stole the ship and abandoned the captain and his 4 shipmates, virtually leaving him with no supplies.
They spent the next 18 months stranded on an inhospitable island and struggled for survival. Through it all, the captain shows leadership, kindness and great human spirit and the author explains, sometimes in the captain's words, how they survived and what harsh conditions they faced.
This is just a typical example of the stories in the book. If you like nonfiction survivor books - this is one of the best.
I often tell my son and nieces stories and some of the stories I have told them are out of Castaways in Paradise - they are equally fascinated.

The Ancient and Outer Gods Are ComingReview Date: 2008-09-03
Chris recovered his body, but it had been enhanced with nanobots. He returned to New York City within his body, but then bloodwalked among the master vampires of the New York City demesne. After terrifying them out of their traditions, he gave them specific orders. Returning into his physical body, Chris departed NYC and went back to Louisiana.
In this novel, Chris finds himself in a strait jacket within a padded cell. The very blond and voluptuous Doctor Fand was trying to talk him into facing reality. She also wants him to sign a paper releasing his unborn son to foster care.
Despite the drugs, Chris begins to think coherently. He decides that the self-described psychiatrist isn't really a medical doctor. He also notices that the blonde has pointy ears, a violet glow and a nasty disposition.
Chris jams the blonde through the door and escapes his cell. Fleeing through the halls -- that turn into stone tunnels -- Chris confronts the oversized orderly and extends claws from his fingers capable of chipping the stone walls. The man says something about Chris's eyes, then turns and runs away.
In this story, Chris returns to his houseboat to find that he has been gone for three weeks. It seemed like three months, but time passes more quickly in a fairy mound. He manages to stay awake long enough to get a quick briefing on the current situation.
Two enforcers from the New Orleans demesne are on his boat preparing to take Mama Samm to the Big Easy. Marie Laveau has been minding Lupe as she carries his unborn son. Doctors Mooncloud and Barton have been tending to Lupe's needs while she is nearing the end of her pregnancy.
Chris is talking to Zotz the bat god on the rear deck of the houseboat when something pulls the demon into the water. Three fish men come up from the depths and attack him. After they fall into the river, Chris again grows claws as well as metal blades on his forearms. Cutting up the fishmen, he returns to the houseboat.
Apparently the nanobots within his body have activated beyond the basic tissue repair level. They are not only generating personal weapons, but also breathing apparatus to keep him alive under the water. Still, the energy has to come from somewhere and he starts craving even more blood.
This tale introduces Chris to the ancient and outer gods a la H.P. Lovecraft. They infest his dreams and even cause hallucinations while he is awake. Apparently the bad gods are returning to Earth and the not-so-bad gods are trying to prevent their return.
Chris is living in deep doo-doo in these final days. The world is coming to an end and his son, daughter and former wife will be born any time now. The Werewolves are revolting and the vampires are not so friendly. Enjoy!
Recommended for Simmons fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of preternatural creatures, ancient gods, and desperate love.

Chris takes on the End-Of-The-WorldReview Date: 2007-07-01
I have to say that this book is probably my least favourite in this series so far. All the strengths that have been accumulated in previous books seem to have been mostly expended in this novel as Chris is left isolated and feared by most people around him. The end of the book brings Chris either to a new starting point or a rather sad end. Either way this series needs another book as this would not be a good way to end the series. If I could, I'd probably give this book 3.5 stars as I don't think it lives up to previous instalments in the series, but it's not bad enough to stop me reading any new books which might be published.
AmazingReview Date: 2007-06-04
One word of caution: you need to start with the previous book in the series (Habeas Corpses) in order to keep up with the score card. Especially when you get to the end. Ideally you should read from the beginning (One Foot in the Grave).

Not a lot of bang for the buckReview Date: 2007-10-06
It was a lot of common sense stuff like "dogs may become reluctant if you pull them through the weave poles with the leash". Well, gee, that I could have figured out on my own. :) No clicker use either, which surprised me.
There *was* lots of mention of entering the obstacles from different angles and making sure you're in different places when the dog enters and exits, which was a good thing to point out. There was also a brief comparison of different techniques for teaching weave poles which I found interesting (still no clicker techniques though). So it's not that it was completely content free, but there was so much repetition and filler that I felt like the useful information could have been condensed into a one-page handout for each obstacle. It hardly seems worth buying the book for that.

Great Stories, Mildly InspiringReview Date: 2005-05-31
This is one of those books that I am not sure how to describe. The book is a series of 40 weight loss stories. The book reminds me a lot of a daytime talk show. Each one of the people in this book had a story to tell. Most of the stories were quite touching. It was great to read real life people actually being able to go from obese to a healthy, attractive weight. However, the book did read like an infomercial for Deal-A-Meal.
Most of all, I was touched by the type of person Richard Simmons himself is. After reading the book, I was of the opinion that Mr. Simmons is one of the few people in this world who will sacrifice his time, money, and travel to almost anywhere to help a complete stranger. While I am sure Mr. Simmons has made millions from his fitness empire, I truly believe he is in it to help him and others with their weight.
This is not a book I would recommend running out and buying unless you get a deal on it. I did find the stories somewhat inspiring, but not overly inspirational (In all due fairness. I'm not sure if this is because my weight problems in life have been what I would call terrible). After finishing the book, I did not have the urge to exercise and throw out any junk food in the house. Rather, the book made me shrug my shoulders and say "that was interesting".

I originally dubbed the audio version of this book on tape from the library over 10 years ago. I still listen to it. I decided that I would like to own the actual book version because I enjoyed the tapes so much.
This book is filled with short, easy-to-read-in-a-couple-of-minutes stories of inspiration, and practical tips for changing one's lifestyle.
I don't have a weight problem but I am inspired to make healthy choices in my life because of this book. I highly recommend it.

Absolutely Delightful!Review Date: 2007-11-03
A wonderful book worth hunting down. I loved to read about the rather stiff hero become unraveled and discomposed. He is known as an extremely punctual man whose lives his life by his timepiece. Then he meets an extraordinary woman who turns his whole world topsy turvy. Watching him struggle to maintain some semblance of control is quite humorous. I especially loved the 'champagne' fight the H/H had -getting drenched has never been so fun! Lots of really cute secondary characters too. I loved the heroine's entire family down to her little toddler sister that would snuggle into the Earl's lap and call him MY lord -too cute. There is a little bit with a villain at the end that really was unnecessary and frankly boring. But the rest of the book was VERY entertaining. Plenty of good love scenes too.
A really nice bit of romantic fluff.
SUCH A FUN STORY!!!!....(4 1/2 stars)Review Date: 2003-06-03
A good read but some weak spotsReview Date: 2002-10-25
Briefly, this is the story of a young, tom-boyish girl who is the daughter of an impoverished country vicar. Charlotte Trowbridge is meant to be a madcap but unfortunately, the author has a struggle to keep Charlotte's behaviour realistically planted in regency soil.
The hero is Maximillian, the Earl of Wycliffe - a young man so pokered up that you just want to shake him. A little too full of himself, he is somewhat stiff and unapproachable when we meet him but, of course, Charlotte and the Trowbridge progeny are designed to melt him and make him come to life.
There is a villain of the piece, a kidnapping on the day of Charlotte and Max's wedding and even some rather nice sex scenes although they anticipate their vows - something I can't imagine a vicar's daughter of the times would have done with such relish! Unfortunately, herein lies my criticism. The actions that drive the plot and the behaviour of the characters is just a little too out of synch for me. This means that sometimes the story is a little too much modernity dressed in empire line dreses and I find this sort of thing irritating.
However, it is a sweet enough story and I have a few other books by the author in the queue so I shall be interested to see how her opus develops.

lHero Nicholas de Laci was left to die in the Eastern deserts by his neighbor Lord Hexham,. Hatred has fueled his soul and he is angry that his brother in law killed Lord Hexham, robbing him of his vengeance.
Nicholas is pleased when the king decrees that he marry Gillian, Lord Hexham's niece to unite their lands. Gillian, Nicholas believes, will be the perfect object of his revenge; after all she is tainted with Hexham's blood.
Gillian is living in a convent and has never met her uncle, so she is unaware of Nicholas's hatred. She is wary of marriage and when she meets her soon to be husband, she is startled by his intense hatred. This anger continues well on their journey to his castle. Nicholas has no desire to consummate the marriage, he yells at Gillian constantly and tells her she is to wait solely on him. Nicholas is incredibly selfish and spoiled.
Gillian to her credit does not cower before her irate husband. She is resigned to the marriage and at first is ecstatic that he does not desire to bed her. This changes though when she desires a child and now she must find a way to seduce her husband without surrendering her pride.
These two fight a lot and I mean a lot in the first half of the novel. Mostly it is Nicholas doing the bellowing but a few times Gillian jumps to conclusions and shouts her displeasure with her husband. This was wearisome and I was pleased when these two finally got around to at least being honest with their desires. They take their passion for life and fighting right into the bedroom.
Nicholas does come around to seeing his wife as more than just an object of revenge but when this happens, unexpected illness and a visitor from the past must be dealt with by the duo. This is a good read and I really liked the heroine who was unafraid to face her bitter husband and find a way to reach past his anger to his heart.
