Carole Simmons Oles gives voice, in this collection, to Harriet Hosmer, American sculptor (1830-1908). She also gives voice to Hosmer's sculptures themselves. There is a flowing dialogue between Ms. Oles and Harriet and her work and critics. In a time of much self-reflection and confession by contemporary poets, this book is a breath of fresh air. The subject is not just the poet herself, but something other, someone other. We travel to Rome with Hosmer, stepping into her studio and her mind as she creates "her children" and fights off critics who focus too much attention on her rather masculine appearance. Hosmer is spirited and daring, and Oles has fun with this, as do readers, but above all Hosmer is presented as focused and determined to remain true to her vision. Oles, herself, is as gifted with a pen as Hosmer was with a chisel. Her poems are elegant and shapely in form, yet solid and weighty. And Oles brings in just enough of her own life, past and present, that readers, by book's end, feel they know her as well as Harriet---and are the better for it. I highly recommend this book to artists, in particular, whether male or female, poet or sculptor. I guarantee the many voices within its pages will continue to speak to you long after it takes its place on your shelf.

This book blew me away. The writing is outstanding, the characters are well-developed, and the sense of place is spot-on. Tony Simmons really captures the isolated northwest corner of Florida, and the kind of people who live there.

This book is very informative about a whole range of social issues. Although it specifically deals with the American social scene it has an universal appeal. It dissects problems and situations like poverty, income inequality, lack of a fair electoral system, prevailing taxation policies, basic needs and "rights" of people, educational opportunities, homelessness, etc., and proposes possible solutions for them. This book dispels many myths associated with the poor and the needy. This book was a very agreeable experience for me and I will be promoting it among my friends. This detailed and thoroughly researched book will delight you if you are for Justice, Fairness and Equality. The book has a Reference section that is a treasure for progressive thinkers. Enjoy this book.

Fast-paced once you get out of the second chapter. The passion
scenes warm up more than I expected for a story of this age. Great stuff.

I was the technical editor for Curt on this book and have had the opportunity to work with him on other books. His writing style is excellent and he never spends more time than necessary on any one topic.

For those wishing to learn more about the hardware requirements for Win2000, this is the book. You won't find vague chapters covering numerous other Win2000 topics lightly-- that's for other books. This one focuses on what it takes to manage the physical server that is running Win2000.

If you like this one, I can tell you that Curt has other books on other Win2000 subjects that I've read. His stuff is easy to read and won't bog you down.

One of the few romance novel gems...

Honestly, I'd rather be immersed in Anne Rice than a romance novel... at least that's what I thought until I picked up this book years ago. I've probably read it ten times, and I love it each and every time. Caroline, the novel's heroine, is strong willed, intelligent, and courageous- not something seen very often in any sort of novel. Her husband, Joshua, is easy to hate... and who cannot help but be seduced by Captain Domino and the time spent on the tropical island?

I was hooked. If you love historical novels, and like romance, this is the book for you. Unlike some romance novels where the sex is focused on, this hints at it without there being an abundance. It's a perfect mix. Loved it a million times over.

Collaboratively edited by Cynthia Simmons (Associate Professor of Slavic Studies, Boston College) and Nina Perlina (Professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures, Indiana University - and herself a child survivor of the Siege of Leningrad), Writing The Siege Of Leningrad: Women's Diaries, Memoirs, And Documentary Prose is an impressive compilation of writings by Russian women who struggled and suffered during Siege of Leningrad by German and Finnish troops during World War II. Focusing on the civilian experience from the women's perspective, experiences which ranged from replacing the men who died in industrial labor, to somehow keeping families together, and weathering immense casualties due to bloodshed, starvation and a bitter winter, Writing The Siege Of Leningrad is an profoundly important, deeply moving, insightful collection of human experience and a strongly recommended addition to Russian History, European Studies, and Women's Studies supplemental reading lists and academic reference collections.

If You Have a Reading/Writing Challenged Child - Read This!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-15
I read this book with the greatest interest because my child is one of the case studies used by Jay Simmons. I found the book very interesting not only because I was eager to read about my child but also because I found the entire book to be of interest as the parent of two learning disabled children. As the parent of two children with reading/writing weaknesses, I am always searching for information to assit them and also to assit me in being better prepared for working with my school district. I am going to request that my school board and current principal read Jay's book in the hopes that they can see areas where they can improve on meeting the needs of our district's children. I would recommend that anyone with a child who has reading and writing problems read this book before your next I.E.P. meeting. It will give you some very helpful knowledge.

For [money] a year, you get:

- access to all the zagat cities
- listings of new restaurants that obviously don't make the book until the following year
- ability to search using different criteria. I've used this feature in Chicago quite extensively (i.e. show me all of the Italian restaurants less than [money] with at least 15 rating, etc.)

This book is extremely useful but in a different way - we leave the book in the car so when we are out and get the urge to eat out, we can easily look up restaurants.
