General Simmons has written a great general history of the Marine Corps. This classic account is very readable. I understand
the Naval Institute Press has just published an updated and revised 3rd edition of this book. General Simmons was also the
senior editor of the just released pictorial history entitled The Marines.

A well researched history of the Ute Indians and the areas they lived in. Virginia Simmons discusses various stereotypes made
by those who first encountered the Utes and sets the record straight. The Utes were an important element in the regional history
of Colorado, Utah and New Mexico. I found her descriptions of the adjustments the Utes had to make in various environments
most interesting. If you wish to learn about nomadic Indian ways and culture this is an excellent book to read. Well written
tribute to a tribe that struggled to survive the onslaught of the whiteman's culture.

VANDAL is the story of Will Brenner, a sixteen-year-old boy who has a pretty good life. He`s a decent student, has reasonable
parents and great kid sister named Olivia. He also plays lead guitar in a rock band called KISS FOREVER. The various members
dress up and imitate the rock band KISS. Will is the youngest person in the group. The other guys are in their thirties and
were big fans of KISS when they were teenagers.
The only thorn in Will's side is his older brother Jason who is a bully and a jerk. He's attractive and athletic, but is constantly in some kind of trouble. As a young kid, he was difficult at home, then in school, and as he gets older his bad behavior becomes more serious. His teenage years lead to petty theft and police involvement. The family is in turmoil because of Jason's conduct. They have even sought family counseling and professional help for Jason, but nothing has helped. Will is the over achiever to the difficult big brother. Perhaps Will's good-boy behavior is a shield and defense against Jason and the problems that he causes. This story brings up serious family issues when Jason's thoughtless actions cause a disastrous situation. It also gives an interesting look at how a difficult child can effect the lives of his siblings. As a parent myself, it made me think how I might have handled Jason.
Michael Simmons has a unique talent for delving through the minds of his teenage characters and giving us some insights about how they think.

This is a very cute story about a duck who wanders away from her mother without realizing it, then misses her when she realizes
she is all alone. A simple story with lovely illustrations, capable of sustaining the attention of a very active 1-1/2 year
old. (In Spanish)

An encyclopedic treatment of Victorian railroads

Review Date: 2008-01-21
Jack Simmons book is nothing less than an encyclopedia of Victorian railroad history presented as a narrative. Using a thematic
rather than chronological format, he addresses practically every aspect of the topic, from the machinery and use of railways
to their representation in literature and their management of public relations. Within them he provides a clear overview
of the people, places, and technologies that created and directed the development of Britain's railroad network.
The author of over a half-dozen more specialized books on railroad history, Simmons brings an impressive breadth of knowledge to his topic. Much of this is clear from his writing, which with his confident and comfortable tone conveys an easy familiarity with his subject. Yet like an encyclopedia entry his coverage is often brief as he passes from subject to subject, leaving the reader wanting to learn more. This is especially true in terms of his illustrations, which while numerous are nowhere near sufficiently so for his text, leaving readers to track down pictures of the images and places he mentions for themselves.
None of this, however, detracts from the overall utility of this book. Well written and deeply researched, Simmons's book is an excellent guide to understanding Victorian railroads and the role they played in the history of their time. Readers will find it an enlightening resource, one that they can enjoy from cover to cover or by selecting the chapters that sate specific needs. Either way, it is one that people interested in the subject will want to keep on their shelves for many years to come.

As an attorney specializing in employment law, I use this book to answer questions about wage and hour law. It is written
in easy-to-understand language, accessible to any employer. Although it says it is for California employers, it also is
a comprehensive analysis of federal law. I recommend it for employers in any state. I recently cleaned out my library
of all the books I haven't used in years. Only four books were left -- three of them by Richard Simmons. This book is on
top.
