A day by day look at Thoreau

"Oct. 22nd, 1837. 'What are you doing now?' he asked, 'Do you keep a journal?'-- So I make my first entry today."
Thus begins Thoreau's Journal, made up of more then two million words and covering about twenty-five years of his life. No
other work of Thoreau's better exhibits his discipline as a writer and his devotion to the natural world. In the Journal
can be found the fragmented foundations of masterpieces such as Walden, A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers, The Maine
Woods, and Cape Cod. But what is perhaps more interesting to a reader of Thoreau's Journal are his thoughts and insights
on topics such as friendship, love, religion, nature, bravery, heroism, war, slavery, the art of writing, and, most important
to Thoreau, the art of living. Anyone with any interest in Thoreau will find his Journal to be an invaluable aid in understanding
and following the life of one of America's most profound prose writers

I have read all the books in this series and ordered two sets for school. It is so positive to find a strong, female literary
character! Even though the main character is a young woman, there is plenty of action for boys and girls alike. I would
recommend this series to anyone who wants their children to get a great lesson in morals and upbringing, as well as a great
reading expereince!

I purchased this book originally to help me pass the time on a business trip in my hotel room - my mother grew up on a farm
in Kansas traversed by trail and I had heard stories all of my life - mostly a lot of legends - I had occasion to visit northeast
New Mexico several times over the past twenty years and now having read this book I have a deep respect and reverence for
those persons whose dreams and visions made possible the taming of the American frontier - I became personally involved in
the life story of Marian Russell and came away at the conclusion of the book feeling as if I had heard the story of a close
family member - it was as if I were there with her living the story as well - wished there were more

Walking, Talking, Lying is a full-color gallery of most unusual photographic works by Laurie Simmons. Nearly all the photographs
are of dolls or mannequins juxtaposed with objects and artifacts - from a doll-sized hourglass with very feminine lower torso
and legs to a ventriloquist's dummy seated and posed as if for an expensive formal portrait. The text commentary by Kate Linker
points out the binding themes of Simmons' work such as the confusion of individuals with their possessions, to the extent
that they identify with inanimate objects. Simmons' photographs form an unforgettable impression in their fusion of human
nonhuman simulacra in this singularly distinctive treasury.

Product Description
Philip Simmons was just thirty-five years old in 1993 when he learned that he had ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease, and was told he had less than five years to live. As a young husband and father, and at the start of a promising literary career, he suddenly had to learn the art of dying. Nine years later, he has succeeded, against the odds, in learning the art of living.
Now, in this surprisingly joyous and spirit-renewing book, he chronicles his search for peace and his deepening relationship with the mystery of everyday life.
Set amid the rugged New Hampshire mountains he once climbed, and filled with the bustle of family life against the quiet progression of illness, Learning to Fall illuminates the journey we all must take - "the work of learning to live richly in the face of loss." From our first faltering steps, Simmons says, we may fall into disappointment or grief, fall into or out of love, fall from youth or health. And though we have little choice as to the timing or means of our descent, we may, as he affirms, "fall with grace, to grace."
With humor, hard-earned wisdom and a keen eye for life's lessons - whether drawn from great poetry or visits to the town dump - Simmons shares his discovery that even at times of great sorrow we may find profound freedom. And by sharing the wonder of his daily life, he offers us the gift of connecting more deeply and joyously with our own.

This book had me glued. I own a foundation bred stallion and did not know his dam's bloodlines. With each Legends book I read,
I learn more of why my stud is the way he is! I have also learned how important research is in breeding quality animals and
how they did it then and how it has effected now! An excellent series of books for anyone interested in their horses ancestry.

This booklet is a collection of articles by Augusta E. Stetson that appeared in the press, or in pamphlet form, after Mary
Baker Eddy, the Discover, Founder, and the forever Leader of Christian Science, rose above mortal vision in 1910. These
articles are among Mrs. Stetson's first published efforts to counter attempts to reverse and materialize absolute Christian
Science as found in the Christian Science Textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. Published by Augusta
Stetson in 1911. Booklet; 44 pages; reprint of the 1911 edition.

The logo design process book we've been waiting for...

"Logo Lab," the new HOW Design Books release from designer/author Christopher C.H. Simmons, is the identity design book many
in the profession have been waiting for to help actually explain the process of creating logos. The book lives up to its subhead
by really demonstrating "identity creation from concept to completion" in a clean and beautifully designed format. Simmons,
in a conversational style of writing, introduces us to the creative geniuses behind 18 individual identity projects and then
takes us through the client meetings, concepting, sketching, scheduling, presentations and execution of the final design for
the businesses, organizations and products featured. Along the way the reader is visually stimulated by initial logo scribbles,
presentation boards and the end applications for the identities of Converse, the New York City Olympic bid, an NFL team, the
Georgia Music Hall of fame and more. From the one-person firm efforts of sports identity specialist Mark Verlander to the
teamwork of Ogilvy & Mather's Brand Integration Group, the author takes the viewer to a position of peering over the shoulder
of the designers hard at work through his text and vibrant illustrative elements. A favorite chapter is the presentation of
Simmon's fascinating interview with the perennially cranky and brilliant Art Chantry, as he explains his working relationship
with client Estrus Records - illustrated with 60 logos produced for the company. It is also thrilling to have Simmons include
the story and process of his own design for Paradox Media in this volume. His chicken and egg (or is it egg and chicken) design
is destined to be a classic - as is this book. From now on, whenever a designer asks for an explanation of the logo design
process the easy answer is: "Go buy a copy of "Logo Lab." I do have one gripe about the book. At 144 pages, and with only
18 excellent case studies, the book is far too short. We can only hope that "Logo Lab, Vol. 2" is a future possibility. -
