A prominent name in Romano-British archaeology describes Corinium, the Roman city that is now Cirencester in Gloucestershire. This informative booklet includes area and local maps, along with a plan of the Roman remains superimposed on a map of modern Cirencester. Notable artifacts and their provenance are described. A good introduction to a topic for which literature is hard to find. Includes a bibliography.

An overlooked Classic

Read this when I was in my 20s and again when I was in my 30s. ThaT was obviously a long time ago. But at the time I felt it was one of the best books that I had ever read. And looking back, all these years later, I still agree with that assessment.
Main Character was Jake Adams, a Heroin Dealer, who also is a Gang Leader and a College Student. I would think that Jake would still be "cool" today. Also aiding characters are Spider, Scar, Armenta and Maxine. Spider is a Hustler who ends up crippled as a result of a Jake Adams hot headed response. Scar is a Heroin addict. Armenta is a High Yellow college student who is madly in love with Jake. We also hear of Jazz Musicians such as Pres, Bird, Cage and Tree. I learned later that the book apparently set in the St. Louis area. An absolutely fascinating read.

The author helped launch the first credit card in the 1950's. He describes in detail the many bad things that have happened from Americans becoming too reliant on plastic, living beyond their means. Should be required reading for all high school students!!!!

Excellent treatment of the Christian Sayers
Helpful Votes: 17 out of 17 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-03
Most people, when they hear of Dorothy Sayers, immediately think of her delightful detective novels based around Lord Peter Wimsey. But she was much more than another Agatha Christie. She was also a superb thinker and committed Christian. A contemporary of C.S. Lewis and T. S. Eliot, Sayers was a first-rate thinker who had a passionate belief in the importance of Christian doctrine and theology.

Unfortunately she has tended to be overshadowed by the likes of other famous Christian laypeople from England: Lewis, Eliot, Tolkien, Muggeridge and Chesterton. But she was in many ways their equal, and she can rightly be described as one of our most important Christian intellects and authors of recent times.

Sayers was appalled at the general lack of doctrinal knowledge amongst most believers, and she wrote extensively on the need to develop a Christian mind. And she strived to make theological truths accessible to the common man. It is her theological interests that make up the theme of this important book.

Laura Simmons is well versed in the writings of Sayers. Indeed, she spent one summer reading through the 30,000 pages of letters written by and to Sayers. This book demonstrates that Simmons has a very good grasp indeed of the mind and writings of Sayers.

The title of Simmons' book refers of course to the 1940 essay by Sayers, Creed or Chaos? In that important tract Sayers demonstrates her clear grasp of the importance of right belief as the basis of right living. Orthodoxy, in other words, precedes orthopraxis. We cannot rightly live the Christian life if we do not have a right understanding of basic Christian doctrines and teaching.

Simmons examines a number of theological concerns that Sayers addressed over her important career. Sayers wrote on many theological issues, on the nature of words and language, on women's issues, and creativity and art. Simmons explores all these vital topics in depth.

The very extensive bibliography of both primary and secondary sources shows that Simmons' has deeply mined the works of Sayers, and those written about her. Hers is a first-rate treatment of a first-rate Christian thinker and writer.

Simmons deserves praise for bringing the theological side of Sayers back into the public spotlight.

These books are a pleasure to read and to look at !

This series of books are the favourite with my 9 month old daughter and me ! We have been enjoying these books for about four months now. I even recite them to my little girl when we are out walking to squeals of delight.

I have borrowed a lot of books from the library, so you could say I have done a lot of "road testing". I find the Daisy series to be in a different league to everything else. The illustrations in the Daisy series are delightful and the words are like poetry.

I received these books (Daisy: The Little Duck with the Big Feet! - Box Set of 4) as a shower gift when I was expecting my first child five years ago. Since then, the books (especially "Go to Sleep, Daisy") have been the first favorites of both of my children, a girl and a boy. The simple stories and repetition have captivated them as babies and our books have gotten much wear and tear! Plus, the colorful illustrations are darling and attracted my kids' attention from the start. This cute set makes a great shower or baby gift!

A STUNNING LIFE OF CONTRASTS
Helpful Votes: 15 out of 17 total.
Review Date: 1998-08-01
Dawn Langley Simmons life story in this incredible autobiography is one full of contrasts. Born and identified as a boy and named Gordon in Britain, she eventually was able to have the necessary surgery in America to become the woman she was intended to be. As a writer Gordon emigrated to America and mixed with the rich and famous and the upper echeleons of society. He became very wealthy in his own right and from a legacy left to him. He was able to buy an historic house in Charleston and have the surgery required to become a woman. Dawn then met and married a poor black man,and faced a future of racism and abuse from the community, eventually having to leave Charleston and after many shifts becoming very poor herself and joining the black community of her husband. She gives birth to a daughter and is now a grandmother. But her husband can be described as a scoundrel, having had affairs, almost killing Dawn with his abuse and then being diagnosed with schitzophrenia. The ! fact that Dawn could be so forgiving is a testament to her strength and character. I first read about Dawn in a magazine in 1997 and spent a very long time tracking down this book, eventually getting it from Amazon.com. Reading of Dawn's British roots in Heathfield and Tunbridge Wells was so neat as all of my relatives come from that part of the world too,so the places she mentioned I was able to picture in my mind. This book is a very good story of an incredible life of unbelievable contrasts. How many people could cope with what Dawn has been through and come out such a lovely person.
