Not a big fan of poetry but I liked this book

A friend told me to take a look at the poetry, and I really was impressed by the honesty and the unique way it was written. She didn't use any titles, but I understood the theme, and it really flowed well together. I am interested in seeing what Ms.Simmons comes out with next.

I didn't really know what to expect, but Contra/Diction was definitely worth the money. It held my attention the whole time, and each time I read it, it was some other way to take it. It's not your ordinary collection of poetry. Highly recommended!

These books are a pleasure to read and to look at !

This series of books are the favourite with my 9 month old daughter and me ! We have been enjoying these books for about four months now. I even recite them to my little girl when we are out walking to squeals of delight.

I have borrowed a lot of books from the library, so you could say I have done a lot of "road testing". I find the Daisy series to be in a different league to everything else. The illustrations in the Daisy series are delightful and the words are like poetry.

My 11-month-old loves this book!

This is one of my son's favorite books. It is usually the first book he pulls off the shelf. The oversized pages allow more room for the wonderful watercolor illustrations. The text is very simple, but the pictures allow you to embellish the story as desired. I wouldn't have predicted how much he enjoys this book--but I've bought all the Daisy books now and he clearly prefers them to many other books. He also loves seeing "Daisy" on the pond by our house.

Hal Simmons knows how to keep a reader short on sleep. This tale of betrayal, murder and courage overcoming all is clearly based on serious research. I used to work in the mining industry, and my husband and I now explore old mine as a hobby, so I ought to know! The end was so great I cried with happiness.

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark

Review Date: 2002-08-21
Simple but lively text tells the story of big sister Lucy (a natural born story teller herself) and the way that she helps her little brother, Jamie, overcome his fear of the dark. Charming, big bright illustrations, many of them full double page spreads show the journey that Lucy, Jamie and their bedtime friends Bear and Floppy Rabbit take to find the land of the Dreamtime Fairies. Lucy thinks the Dreamtime Fairies will know how Jamie can fall asleep without being scared. They meet lots of charming characters in the process and all have suggestions to help Jamie but nothing works quite right until they finally do meet the dreamtime fairies. This book is so lovely and filled with tender loving images that it is sure to help soothe and comfort any little one who gets spooked by nighttime shadows on the walls. It offers a whimsical and positive solution for a youngster whose imagination gets stuck in the dark places at nighty-night time and gives them their own built-in nightlight to switch on at will. Sweet.

Cute Pup, helps Cute Seal...what's not to like?

This is a cute book. If you know and like Jane Simmons' work (ie: Come along daisy) I think you will enjoy her cute tale of a fun little dog that is bored, finds a friend in a lost seal, and helps re-unite it with its mommy. The illustrations are so pretty, and bring you right in to the beach setting. Ebb and Flo is a fun little book that my 3 year old daughter enjoys reading with me. She likes to say the seal sounds "Wah, Wah" along as I read. There is something endearing about a baby seal, and helping it find its mommy, that just interests my little girl. She also really likes "Come along Daisy" another Jane Simmons book. Jane Simmons is good at keeping the story simple, yet interesting enough not to bore the reader, and of course her artwork is just so great.

A thoughtful story about compassion and helping others.

Ebb & Flo And The Baby Seal by Jane Simmons is happy picturebook story by award-winning author about Jane Simmons. Set on the beach, where a dog named Ebb and a young girl named Flo find a baby seal far away from home, Ebb & Flow And The Baby Seal is a thoughtful story about compassion and helping others. A delightful story filled with Jane Simmons' soft-toned, full-color illustrations in a distinctively minimalist style.

Conflict: Not to be avoided, but to be dealt with
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2002-07-17
Rev. Simmons' message here is not at all of avoidance of conflict, but of dealing effectively with it by being truly centered. There are lessons, so he states, for us to learn in conflict situations. And such situations indeed are part of life. But if we don't deal realistically and effectively with conflict, we bring even more disharmony into our lives.

And so we are to embrace the tiger, that is the conflict situation, and return to the mountain, that is to our center. This takes a bit of spiritual training, a sharpening of our ability to center, to deal with situations in ways that are nonviolent, and nondestructive to ourselves or others.

This two hour program presents us with a regime and a way of thinking to accomplish this. It is done with compassion and understanding, also with clarity.

I very much recommend this to people at all levels.

I reviewed many tapes this year, and "Embrace Tiger, Return to Mountain" was the best audio tape teaching the essence of restoring harmony and balance to your inner life, as well as in your relationships with others. This tape is also very valuable for those wishing to discover a more positive outlook, conflict resolution and inner peace. I recommend it highly.

A fabulous holiday investigative tale

Review Date: 2004-11-01
In Six Gun, Texas, author Alice Carpenter has worked out the rules of sharing her home with ghosts. However, her cousin Katy Gueydon is not doing quite as well dealing with spirits and begs Alice to help her with Sir Gary Gavin. Katy's plea changes when she finds a corpse in her swimming pool at Esprit d'Chene estate. Alice calls her former spouse Detective Jack Carpenter, who works near her cousin's home, while she drives the two hours to help Katy.

Alice quickly learns that the victim is Bucky Wilson-Jones, son of a state senator. Though Bucky was a reprobate, Alice realizes that the prime suspect is her cousin, a steal magnolia who has lost her metallic backbone. As Alice investigates the current killing, tries to solve Gary's two century old "undeliberate" murder, and works with settling down a bewildered and angry Bucky, she needs help. Jack don't believe in ghosts so she turns to her mentor Twila Brown and their neighbor Granny to form the ghosthunter amateur sleuth team trying to resolve the three related scenarios.

This is a fabulous holiday investigative tale that hooks the audience the moment that readers learn of The Alice and the Howard Ghost Agreement of co-living rules. The women especially Alice and the ghosts own the plot, but readers will commiserate more with Jack the non-believer; he copes with ghost hunting females, a real murder with political implications, and some paranormal phenomena that makes him wonder what to accept as truth. Even without the Ghostbusters, readers will believe in ghosts as Alice and company act like it is a normal phenomenon, all this supernatural phenomena resides inside a delightful who-done-it.
