A "Benefit" Collection that Rises AboveReview Date: 2007-02-01
The breadth of poets collected together inside "In the Arms of Words" subtly communicates a great truth expressed more explicitly in the poems gathered here. From our safe remove, the story can too easily be reduced to "A bunch of foreigners suffer a tragedy..." and on we go with our lives.
The poets in "In the Arms of Words" particularize the victims of the tsunami. They connect the very real, very individual people affected by the tsunami to us, using their knowledge of the world that the victims lived in, and their estimable skills as poets, as communicators. They deal with the myriad cultural, religious, economic and military/industrial aspects of the disaster which contributed in making the situation even worse than it should've been, all the while zooming in with an unblinking eye on individuals, never turning away from the horror there, though in so many of these poems, you can feel, tangibly, the poets fighting the natural human desire to do just that.
But they stay. In the lovely, heart-breaking "After the Wave, Another: Nam Jai" Laurie Klein writes:
No, don't look
away from this.
And in poem after poem we are pulled out of comfort, asked to consider, to look, to reflect, to engage. It's surely more than most people can bear, and the great task of this book is to keep the reader going through it, wanting to go through it. After all, it pales in comparison to the events these moving poems cover.

Highly Readable If Not Terribly Insightful...Review Date: 2003-08-19
As a result, I found it a nice touch that "Japan Diaries" is essentially a transcribed daily journal of two month-and-a-half to two-month trips taken to Japan across a ten-year stretch (1987 and 1997). Without being condescending or offering "the key" to understanding Japan (as far too many Japan travelogues try to do), this book offers a very readable, very day-to-day view of visiting and living in Japan - especially when you come to the country with minimal first-hand experience with Japan itself.
However, if it doesn't offer an arrogant viewpoint it's also not the most insightful book on Japan, either. Not that the author doesn't work hard to give a good background on the various things she talks about - and to be very clear to lay out her own biases in everything she talks about - but she also occasionally fails to understand what's going on around her, such as the background reasons for why foreigners find it so hard to rent an apartment in Japan.
On the whole, though, this is definitely light, interesting reading, perfect for a couple of days on the beach or a long airplane flight. Sherman does as good a job as anyone else I've read of making you feel like you were taking the trip with her. And when it comes down to it, isn't that what travel writing's really all about anyway?

Excellent Tool for Learning About Planned GivingReview Date: 2000-11-18
Legacies for Libraries: A Practical Guide to Planned Giving is the Bible for establishing an effective and successful program. Although the book was written for libraries the principles and concepts can be used for any industry. So don't let the title scare you away from buying it. This is a must read book.
The authors, Amy Smith and Matthew Lehrer, are experienced in the fund development process. However, they write the book in easy to understand language. You don't have to be a lawyer or scholar to understand what you are reading. In simple terms they explain the value of establishing a Planned Giving Program and then lay out the necessary steps for implementing such a program.
The book discusses the different types of Planned Giving gifts and give examples for each one. The authors have also put together an excellent appendix chocked full of valuable information. There is a list of Planned Giving resources, a glossary and bibliography.
When you finish reading Legacies for Libraries: A Practical Guide to Planned Giving you will be ready and willing to tap the $43 trillion in assets that demographers say that the World War II generation will be transferring to the next generation.
Don't lose out on this critical source of funding for your organization.

Trust God for the outcomes in various projects, they advise. Similarly, they make the point that one should learn God's assignments in life. God made each individual the way He did for certain reasons. Assignments are related to an individual's makeup and composition. Another pertinent point they make is that God is the Lord of all of life, not a separate "top priority," but to be part of life in its entirety.
