Talking to one's child is a dying art that parents need to rediscover. "Start Talking: A Girl's Guide for You and Your Mom about Health, Sex, or Whatever" is a book to help mothers and daughters reform that bond that has so often been lost. Focusing on teenagers and the smorgasbord of changes that come with that age, it tackles everything from the first period to virginity to yoga to most importantly, how to deal with boys and everything that comes with them. "Start Talking" is highly recommended as reading for both mother and daughter, sure to forge quite the bond between them.

A helpful resource for our mostly Gentile elementary school
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2001-12-19
I've read this picture book many times over the years to predominantly Gentile elementary students in our school library to help explain the historical events behind the Jewish celebration of Hanukkah. The quasi-biblical language used in the text makes this book more effective for older students, from about 4th to 6th grades.

Students familiar with the Bible and the Temple in Jerusalem seem to get a bit more out of the narrative, but it's still necessary to stop and explain terms like Sabbath, idols, pigs, and the month of Kislev.

Ori Sherman's bold colorful paintings are obviously not meant to depict a literal representation of the story line, and the students readily accept them as an artistic interpretation.

In our rural, mostly Gentile, environment, this version of the Story of Hanukkah has been a helpful resource.

It is so easy for us to become complacent in our comfortable everyday lives, but we never know what tomorrow might bring.
The true story of Bob Sherman's time spent in a Mexican jail reveals that Jesus can be present even in the harshest situations for those who love Him.
The Streets of Durango is an easy enjoyable read that will keep you ready to turn the next page to see what happens next.
Highly recommended for anyone serious about following Jesus especially those who don't want to be only a fair weather christian. For those who love Jesus, may you too be able to endure to the end... Matthew 24:13

This is sure to be the best book in your reference collection. As a former student of John Beaumont's, I have learned a tremendous amount about the plastics industry from that book.

Jory Sherman has told another tale of western adventure in SUNSET RIDER. Johnny Staggs rides out of the town of Sibley on a vengence trail. Seeking justice on the man called Cutter who killed his father. Along the way Johnny meets up with a group of mountain men who take Johnny in as he travils to Bent's Fort in search of Cutter. Upon leaving Bent's Fort, Johnny is ambushed by Cutter and the hard cases riding with him but he survives and in the end finds that there are other ways to extract vengence besides killing. SUNSET RIDER is a book that won't disappoint and will have you waiting for the next Sherman book.

I really enjoy Sherman's Lagoon and all the characters. I sent lots of funny books to my brother when he was stationed in Baghdad, and he said one of his sergeants was addicted to Sherman's Lagoon: he was more excited about getting another book than about getting home-made cookies! Now THAT's something!!

Paul Hirt has pulled together some of the best western historians to focus on the Pacific Northwest; from Spanish attempts to settle the coast, to Hanford, irrigation, and post-war race relations. Very readable, comprehensive, and well-done. Anyone looking to understand the Pacific Northwest will enjoy this book.

Poetic Memoir
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-03-28
Catholic Library World reviews in March 2001:

This moving collection of memoirs, told in thirteen stories, each a dance in time and space, recounts the author's turbulent journey from Costa Rica to Los Angeles and the painful challenges facing an immigrant youngster in the 30s and 40s, a period that still retained some innocence. Cardona-Hine's coming-of-age story reveals a boy's first experiences with English, his infatuations with American girls, and the pain of high school bullying and otherness. After Pearl Harbor, the family flees to Mexico, seeking a home, wanting to belong somewhere. Feeling more alone there than in California, they return to the United States where they rent an apartment in their home to a series of pathetic individuals: Jews escaping from Europe, a young couple in love who fall out of love, a Frenchman who dies upon learning of the taking of Paris. Surrounded by people experiencing human tragedies, but living in the warmth and fruitfulness of California, they manage to survive.

Beautifully written poetry in prose form, Cardona-Hine's delightful reminiscences make the reader pause to admire unexpected combinations of words and images. This is a book to read slowly and to savor. Belonging to the genre of memoir and bildungsroman, this series of stream-of-consciousness meanderings through a time gone by, creates a mood that only approximates reality.
