Document Examiners and Attorneys need this book

Albert S. Osborn's book,Questioned Documents, is the bible for questioned documents. His second edition published in 1929 with 1,042 pages has excellent illustrations and explains more details of presenting a questioned document case in court than most other books. Photographic methods of presenting a questioned document case in court is dated but his illustrations are excellent and well explained. If you can find a copy it will be a welcome addition to your library. It is a starting point for Forensic Questioned Document Examiners and may be an ending point for attorneys who need just an overview of the science. What do they need? And how do they present it in court?

I really wish that Ballantine (Del Rey) would re-publish both of JHS's novels with original cover art. These two books are the work of a talented author who immersed himself in the great science-fiction masters and then continued their tradition. If you're more than a trifle fed up with dungeons, demons, and dragons, look no further than JHS for an example of the grand style. Joel, we miss you.

Humorous look at the realities of Life

I first received a paperback copy of this book as a free gift along with some other books I had ordered. I don't remember the other books anymore, But over 30 years later, I still remember this book. It was Hilarious and truthful at the same time. Allan Sherman, who is better known as the writer/singer of "Hello Mother, Hello Father", here I am at Camp Granda..., does a great job of explaining the little things in life that we are very hypocritical about (especially sex). His approach is one of examining history and it's institutions through one imaginary character and his family and their adventures. He questions authority and the institutions of what many call "Civilization" and how they have a direct effect on our lives, and how in the sixties much of the ignorance was swept away (and is unfortunately returning again)by the young people in a Sexual revolution. Very Funny! I went back and bought a hardback copy of this book, after my dog-earred paperback got loaned out one time too many and was not returned. If you can only buy one book this year, ignore all that sacrimonious crap and buy a GOOD book.

Evolution of the Left

Review Date: 2001-05-13
The title says it all as this cogent work opens with a declaration of independence from sociobiology, and proceeds to a reexamination of social evolutionary thinking, the idea of 'evolution' in free fall. Ay there's the rub, what does the free floating concept of (social) evolution really mean, and what is its true relation with organismic evolution? This question has never found an answer, because even the theory of organismic evolution is incomplete. To escape the clutches of E.O. Wilson is not to escape those of S. J. Gould, and the assumptions of basic Darwinism still bedevil analysis even as the banishment of all ideas of progress simply compounds the confusion. For the idea of progress in the docket of ideology, in addition to its excision from all discussion of random evolution, leaves all in confusion. We should a more complex theory to explain progression in one form, as macroevolution, and the individual's actions, as freedom,in another, as a sort of microevolution. In any case, we are still 'looking for the answer',without the gimmicks of sociobiological reductionism and this book explores a host of interesting avenues in a liberating, though eclectic mix of themes from Veblen to Marx. Very stimulating work, and some real nose-thumbing at the Social Darwinist plot thickener from the right wing Darwin gang. Still, one is left with the question, where is the theory? A more universal history might give us the clue to an answer.

I have not had a chance to read this book just yet but I do have some basis for a review. Dr. Sherman was one of my seminary professors and I have to say that he was one of the most informative and articulate teachers I have ever come in contact with. I highly recommend any book that he has written! I look forward to picking this up and diving in!

I got a early copy of this from a friend of mine, and decided to buy it to support the author. One thing that I liked is that the stories focus on real things that happen like family members on drugs, and family arguments, without being too preachy. I thought the last story ended too fast I'd like to know more. I look forward to reading more by this new author.

This is an execellent book filled with wonderful photos of Santa Fe's history. I especially enjoyed looking at it with my 86 year old father, who lived much of the 20th century history.
