I was not sure what to expect as I have over 100 books on playing pool. I must say I was pleased to not only enjoy reading Picture Yourself Shooting Pool but the video was a major plus.

In the Marine Corps the best comment you can get from a D.I. is "Outstanding" and I have to say this book falls into the "outstanding" list of books. In fact, I have an Adult Ed class that I teach in the local high school and I start new classes this fall, I will recommend this book to them without any problem. I have already mentioned it to some of my beginner classes.

Not all pool and billiards instructors are the same when it comes to what is the correct way to teach this material, and I feel Matt Sherman covered it very well. Of course, there are some things that I teach a little differently, but it still comes out the same way. If I had to make any comment about this book to anyone who was interested in learning the basics his book is on the "top" of the list.

From Marisa D'Vari, author "Script Magic" and "Media Magic"
Laptop addicts, listen up! Erik B. Sherman shows us that a Pocket PC can do everything a laptop can do, and potentially save thousands of dollars in chiropractor bills in the process.

If your PC manual is too tech-oriented to understand or doesn't give you the low-down on how you can personally (and easily) program your Pocket PC to work best for your lifestyle, check out this amazing resource!

My Pocket PC was ten days and I was ten days frustrated before I located this book and CD combo that showed me how I can use my Pocket PC instead of a computer to compose documents and send them by both fax and email.

The book comes with a CD with many free applications, and now I use the Pocket PC to perform every laptop function. For writers, business people, and frequent travelers, I can't recommend this resource highly enough!

Everyone involved with the criminal justice system needs to read this book

The book documents the concerns of many that public policy is often based on ideology and not evidence based science. This book may be the most unappreciated books of its genre. My simple suggestion is, if you care about domestic violence and its intersection with the criminal justice system, read this book!

Poems for Peace

Mankind must remember
that peace is not
God's gift to his creatures:
peace is our gift to each other.
~Elli Wiesel

Judith Rafaela and Nancy Fay have selected 140 poems to promote peace. In a similar way to the poems in Written with a Spoon (about food), these poems are about the thoughts we feed our minds in order to gain a new perspective on our present condition. Since the world is in turmoil and change is inevitable, poetry can provide moments of peaceful contemplation. One line of poetry could affect you profoundly. It could bring back memories from your childhood, or even give you hope for the future.

I absolutely loved the poem: Feeling My Way Through The Dark which describes awakening to a nest of stars and how Christine Hemp is convinced the world is not where she will always stay. She feels the pull of the stars and for a moment, she is lost in gazing beyond shadows that change shape. While her poem seems to speak of eternal life or a life beyond this current existence, Penny Harter's poem: The Serengeti Plains focuses on the cycle of life and brought an entirely new perspective to death itself.

When blood runs into the grass
it is not death that seeps
into this soil, but starlight
on its journey through the dark.

While reading D.A. Feinfeld's poem about the Blood of a Poet, the last six lines struck me as rather profound and this was the third poem that impressed me and created a new awareness of life itself. Hans Jorg Stahlschmidt's poem about the Writer shows the power of our words and dreams.

I think the poem that was the most meaningful to me was: At The Kitchen Table.

All your poet wife
can think of
is that you've got to see the
early autumn sunset
a nearly perfect shade of
violet
slipping into gold-tinged apricot

What a beautiful book filled with poems about the appreciation for life itself that can lead to a more peaceful existence. Some of the poets are observing, some are awakening your awareness, many are wishing the world would see life from the perspective of a poet.

The cover (not yet shown) is a navy blue with a swirl of cream paint that appears to resemble the moon appearing from dark clouds or a circle of life. It could also be O for ONE peaceful world.

Midnight in the city of good and evil

This book is an excellent history of the city of Savannah and its citizens during the course of the Civil War. Most people only know of Civil War Savannah as the end point of Sherman's famed "March to the Sea", but Savannah was more than that. At one time it was the chief shipping point for getting cotton to Eurpoean factories, and in return receiving munitions, etc.. The North recognized its importance, because it blockaded the coast there as soon as it was feasible, and sent several "monitors" (iron-clad warships) to sustain the blockade. This book covers Savannah from the beginning of the war until Sherman marches in virtually unopposed in December of 1864, in time to preesnt the city as a Christmas gift to President Lincoln. The book is based upon many diaries, manuscripts, etc., from both sides in the conflict, and the contemporaneousness of the writings add immeasurably to the tale. It seems the women of Savannah were much more rabid secessionists than the men, but that may have been true of other places in the South. This is a mere sideline to the course of the war, but it is well worth reading.

Thorough Review of the Effectiveness of Crime Policies
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2001-01-14
This is one of the most comprehensive reviews of evaluations of policies designed to prevent crime available. Though now somewhat dated, each author in the book takes an area of criminal justice, reviews the evaluations available at that time, and reports those findings. If you want to know which programs work to prevent crime, as well as which programs do not, this is a handy reference to have. All criminal justice practitioners and policy makers should be required to read this work before implementing any new policies or programs designed to prevent crime.

I have used the book in a variety of my educational administration classes including Introduction to Educational Leadership,The Principalship and Educational Administration Internship. The book provides the student with an opportunity to simulate many of the activities a principal typically engages in on the job. In addition, the In Basket Simulations, which are real scenarios, provide the student an opportunity to engage in problem analysis. The book serves to complement more traditional textbooks in educational administration.

An invaulable, informative contribution to Civil War studies
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-04
Quest For A Star is a collection of the Civil War letters and diary entries of Colonel Francis T. Sherman of the 88th Illinois, ably edited and with commentary by Knight Aldrich, Sherman's great-grandson. Thanks to his father's political influence, Sherman won an officers commission and commanded a brigade for much of his early service. He saw action at Perryville, Stones River, Missionary Ridge, and other battlefields. He was captured near Atlanta and endured three months in a Confederate prison before being released in a prisoner exchange. During the last months of the war, he served with General Philip Sheridan in the Appomattox campaign. His letters to his father and his diary entries reveal vivid descriptions of wartime experiences, insights into the volatile politics of the times, criticism of the incompetence of superior officers (especially General Don Carlos Buell), and more. Aldrich's commentaries give Sherman's observations an historical perspective, and draws upon his years as a professor of psychiatry and family medicine to offer fascinating speculation about inner conflicts that may have served to fuel Sherman's ambitions and political beliefs. Quest For A Star is an invaluable and much appreciated contribution to the growing body of Civil War era biographical literature.
