In this compact book the stories of British lives in Palestine is told through their diaries and life experiences. This is not the story of war or occupation or colonialism or polemic we are used to but a poignant fair account of individual people trapped in a hard situation, living their everyday lives. We learn of the early mandate, of Zionism and anti-Semitism among the English officers and their wives. We learn about the riots, the various governors, the Palestinian revolt, the Jewish terrorism, the war years when Rommel seemed on the border of victory, all these things and more. An immensely fair account given the nature of the story and the subsequent controversy, this book, more than most, perhaps captures the truth behind `colonialism' it wasn't a racist terrible thing made up of brutal unfeeling people, rather the colonialists were everyday people concerned with themselves and the events around them and usually working to improve the lots of the country to which they had entrusted their lives. The mandate period is fascinating and this is a fair and just picture of it.

Takes away the sour taste left by Margot Peters's biography.

Sarton was a master of the art of letter-writing. The notes are useful, the editing is superb, and Sarton shines through as a rare, passionate, and exacting friend and lover. My only complaint is that this volume is "selected," not "complete." I'm looking forward to Susan Sherman's next presentation of the gentle art to which Sarton stayed dedicated throughout her life.

The series is well-researched and well-documented. It has an index which allows researchers to locate their family and gives the original source; it is best used in conjunction with "Vital Records of (town), Massachusetts to 1850."

Passion , Heartbreak and Sex
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2000-02-24
I just love this book by regional poet Judyth Hill. She's a dynamic, fabulous performer of her own work. This review by Jessica English appeared in Weekly Alibi when the book fist came out in 1997. Men Need Space is now in its second printing. I say "get it while it's hot".

"This newest book from Judyth Hill-a Santa Fe performance poet-happens to be a collection of love poems. Nothing sappy. Hill's love poetry is hard-edged and real. She mocks marriage. She chronicles the aftermath of divorce. She writes about passion, heartbreak and sex with diverse imagery. Hill compares love to baseball; sex to paintings by Renoir; marriage to having diet Sprite and pork rinds in bed. Lengthy and straightforward titles seem to give her away before you even begin the first stanza, but Hill's poems are far more complex, often plunging into some sorrowful or bitter twist by the last stanza. And much of her poems are about poetry itself: the most passionate and torrid lover that any poet has. I ache still since finishing Men Need Space. I return to each stanza, each line that reminds me of myself. And that is the only measure I have for good poetry: the kind that invades your own heart."

Coordination is All!

Hurray for a cookbook writer who goes for big results with just three menu items -- soup, bread and salad. I've found this method easy to shop for and quickier to cook. Julia Older with Steve Sherman have produced satisfying meals out of just three things and they tell which soup to pair with which bread and salad. Tres simple. Some examples I liked:

Soups (Baja Gazpacho, Portugese Kale, Red Pepper, Black-Eyed Pea, Miso, Stracciatelle, Lobster Bisque)

Breads (Poppadums, Chili & Cheese, Golden Saffron, baguettes, Apricot Rum, Cha Sui Bao)

Salads (Chicken Cranberry, Broccoli with Tanini, Paprikesh Beef)

I've been mixing up soups and breads on Sunday evening and freezing them.

By the way, some good salad dressings are included.

Excellent Technical Writing Textbook
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2003-09-19
This book, by Theodore A. Sherman & Simon S. Johnson is a masterpiece! I studied Technical Writing this summer and checked about 6 books out of the Library. This was by far the best one I used.

Reasons I recommend this book:

* This book is very easy to understand.
* It follows all its own advice when it comes to being clear, logically organized, and succinct.
* The book makes effective use of headings, numbered lists, graphs, and tables to make it easy to read.
* The authors really knew the subject, and they have a very effective style of teaching.
* There are Exercises and Assignments at the end of each chapter, which would be useful in applying what you've learned (though I did not take advantage of them).
* The text is interspersed with many excellent examples of good Technical Writing, so you don't just read about it in theory, you see it in practice
* You learn the reasons WHY something is done, so that you understand it and can apply it to othersituations, instead of learning that "that's just the way they do it."
Example: Footnotes and references always seemed to me to be the most arbitrary, complicated things. I thought it was impossible to ever be able to remember the correct form, even after studying lists over and over again. However, now, after reading the following portion from this book, it has suddenly become easy! "A footnote usually answers the following four questions, so far as possible, in the order indicated: (1) Who said it? (2) What was the title of the piece of writing in which it was said? (3) Where or by whom was this writing made available? (4) On what page or pages may the material cited be found?" The whole book is like this. It makes Technical Writing understandable.

The subject of the human costs associated with the use of military force

Review Date: 2006-11-06
Ably translated into English by Betty Jean Craige, "Mother, Speak To Us Of War/Madre, hablanose de la guerra" showcases the bi-lingual poetry of Jewish-Latin-American author Marjorie Agosin as she takes on the subject of the human costs associated with the use of military force from the dirty little wars in third world countries to the global conflicts of the industrialized nations. `In Whispers': When one began/to speak in whispers/Ever so quietly/To shut the windows in summertime/So as not to heart the cries/Or the body being tortured/When one found it easy/To inform on a young neighbor/For subversive activities/And to turn away/Upon seeing him depart/In the boxcar of certain death//When the river filled with bodies/And people described them as thirsty animals/When the language of newspapers obfuscated/And people did not demand the truth/Then/And only Then/We became cowards

A must-have for ANY woman

I recently purchased this book for my mother, after purchasing and LOVING sherman-wolin's book "Smart Girls Do Dumbbells". I flipped through the pages before giving this gift and was amazed by the wealth of information and the upbeat, positive message. Needless to say, my mom loved it. Sherman-Wolin has again managed to make exercising both fun, and informative. With so many "workout" books on the market, her unique feminine spin is refreshing and needed. Women ARE different than men, and they must exersize differently as well. Sherman-Wolin shows you how. I'd recommend this book to ANY woman, regardless of age (or biological clock ;) ). Menopausal women will (OBVIOUSLY) find this book especially helpful.
