Fascinating set of therapeutic How-To's for interventions

Basically this is a set of techniques for diagnosing and intervening with families. The 56 techniques include such classics as the genogram, use of dreams, reframing, and paradox. Each technique is presented with enough detail that you can use it immediately. Names of techniques include: "Pretending to have the symptom," "Contaminating the suicidal Fantasy," and "Sculpting." Each procedure is such an easy read that I have made this book part of my bathroom accessories. I wouldn't part with it.

Harps on the Willow is a wonderfully written book of human experience. It is, at the same time, sad and humorous, bitter and sweet. Katie Ruth is much too compelling a character to let die with only one book. I sincerely hope that Ms. Sherman is writing a sequel.

This book is a wonderful compilation of the history of cannabis/marijuana and is superbly illustrated with many drawings and photographs. The authors do a great job of presenting the information about this plant without being biased towards legalization or total criminalization issues. After reading this book in a local library, I decided I needed to have a copy for myself. Thanks, Amazon, for having it in stock at such a great price.

HOW TO BUY A CAR WITHOUT GETTING TAKEN FOR A RIDE

This book provides an "insider's view" of exactly what goes on when auto dealership managers and their salespeople set out to deceive and defraud the public. The author, an attorney who also worked as an auto salesperson and manager for five years, takes the reader step-by-step through the process of victimization from the moment the buyer first enters the dealership until he or she finally walks out--sometimes hours later--"signed, fleeced, and laid away," as the dealers so aptly put it.

These startling revelations will confirm the public's worst fears--from the enticement of false and misleading advertising to the devious machinations of the finance department to the time the buyer goes back for repairs. The reader learns that the confusion, distortion, intimidation, and in many instances actual fraud, are practices condoned and encouraged by management. Mr. Rothman pulls no punches in exposing the secret business policies--many of which are illegal--in order to educate the public to the tricks they will inevitably encounter.

Most importantly, the author hopes (as will the reader) that the information provided will not only help the prospective buyer find his or her way through the mine field of auto dealerships, but will prove to be an impetus for legislative reform that is long overdue.

One of the best anthologies of the year:

There are some terrific stories in this collection, not least of which are those contributed by the editors themselves. "Audience" by Jack Womack has been chosen for the 1998 volume of "The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror" -- and the volume as a whole will be listed as one of the best of the year. I also heartily recommend Susan Palwick's heart-breaking tale.

Cat Cannons

What I adore most about Rita Sherman's "How To Be Who You Are" is her ability to think like my cat (can we every really know what these mysterious creatures think?).

Rita, however, through basic cannons for daily living (and great cat line drawings) comes as close to cat wisdom as one could imagine - I've been inspired for years by this carefully crafted volume.

Inside its high art and unnumbered pages are simple words to live by that we should all consider. Without giving too much away (this is a must for any self-help book collection) some of my very favorite ways to be who I am include:

Accepting my gifts
Learning not fritter away time
To have courage sooner, rather than later
and of course my most favorite:
Read widely!

I'm sure after getting a hold of Rita's stunning book, you will find the words of wisdom that speak to you, too! (And if you like this book you'll love the companion model "How To Be Yourself."

I am quite impressed with Harold Sherman's approach and candor. He actually teaches one how to improve & control their ESP abilities. He is frank and honest about his failures as well as successes. He doesn't pretend to know how it works, but has theories that he puts forth for consideration. I would definitely recommend this book to those interested in working with ESP. Don't think, however, that you'll absorb all of it in the first reading. Not if you are a truly serious student.

Learn how to use the power of your mind. And there's no other person to learn it from other than Harold Sherman. He was the first (along with Sir Hubert Wilkins the artic explorer) to experiment with telepathy in the 1930s, with 80% of SHerman's 'guesses' being correct 'hits' of WIlkins' activities in the north pole (Sherman was in the US while WIlkins was travelling in the north pole). So how did Sherman use his mind to keep track of Wilkins? No radios, no telegraphs, only his mind. In later years, he's learned more and more about the power of the mind. He used it to safe his very life, when he caught a throat infection, and he 'prayed' for a cure (eventhough his doctors said all of past 40 cases died in the past). So by a series of 'coincidences' he finally met the only person in the US who had the antidote. He is the man who knows how to make coincidences happen. I have learned much from Sherman and experimented his method, now I can create coincidences to work for me. You will learn that man is not left alone helpless in this universe, but a greater power serves us and gives us life. The more you connect to this power, the better results you get in your prayers. In this book, Sherman explains clearly what you need to make prayers work. What's important, and what's irrelevant. He gives examples from his own life and incredible examples of others.

Huecool book!

In this book John Sherman has produced the quintessential guidebook for climbers wanting to go to the pinnacle of climbing - Hueco Tanks.

The descriptions and topos make it possible to find even the most remote climbs. The only problem might be when one area is referenced in its relationship to a previous area of which the reader might not be familiar.
But with a little patience and understanding of how the book is laid out I can't think of a better way to get around Hueco and make the most of your climbing experience.

Maneuvering through the book brings me to the introduction. While most people might skip the introduction to a book, this one is a must read to understanding Mr. Sherman's approach to the content of the book. Playing especially close attention to pages 16-20 will make navigating through the book much easier, saving the reader a lot of time and frustration.

The index or indexes are another plus. There are three - one is a typical alphabet type where one can find a climb by its name. But there are two others, one just for rope climbs and the other for bouldering problems. They are indexed according to difficulty, so if you're a 5.10 climbers can look up all the 5.10 climbs, or 5.9 or . . . .

Not every climb in the park is in the book, but then that would have taken an encyclopedia that no one would have been able to afford. With more than 300 roped climbs and nearly 700 bouldering problems there is enough in this book to keep a climber busy for a lifetime. There is also enough room within the pages (what we call white space in the publishing business) that will allow a climber to write in new climbs as they develop over time.

In the editorial department Mr. Sherman moves from railing at those who would ruin the climbing experience or ethic, to a funny (but useful) rating of plants (cactus) according to their texture: Heinous, Jingus or Casual.

This is how I would rate the following areas of the book:
Topos - Outstanding
Maps - Outstanding
Indexes - Outstanding
Photos - Excellent
Descriptions - Excellent
Editorial Writing - Excellent

In short, Mr. Sherman did an extraordinary job of opening this climbing mecca to those of us who do our hiking in the vertical mode. He has brought order to what were previously hand-me-down, word-of-mouth descriptions that, in the world of climbing, could prove dangerous to ones health.

This book is a riot. There are 9 authors from all over the world who write 5 pieces each. I don't think I have ever laughed so much in my entire life. It's wacky, witty, smutty, weird but most of all funny. I highly recommend this publication.
