CLEARFIELD - A True Episode from the Twilight ZoneReview Date: 2008-07-25
Dr. Sherman Smith unravels a story like a rope made up of 1,001 strings, with shades mirroring Scheherazade's tails of The Arabian Nights. And yet, this true story he coats neither with candy nor castor oil, but with candor. As only one with a pastorate background could do, Dr. Smith weaves into the facts the resulting emotions and spiritual battles anyone in these circumstances would experience. It all starts with an innocent business endeavor as Sonny Glenn, a broker/financial advisor to churches and church groups, does a seminar at a church attended by a pastor from Clearfield, Pennsylvania. This was nothing out of the ordinary, to provide counsel to church leaders and laity through his seminars on prudent Biblical financial principles. But it was Jessie Bell on the phone as he was back in his California office who wanted to invest $20 million that resulted from his seminar. So the story begins.
The deal of a lifetime was not consummated in a reasonable amount of time. Rather, it would twist and turn, unraveling over time and yet more time. Gifts were promised to churches, trusts set up to administer donations to missions - all good things. But along the way of constant air travel and time in Pennsylvania would come the reviving of an old mall with jobs promised to people she had touched as a result of the anticipated windfall. And then there were Corvettes ordered, houses negotiated, leadership positions promised, asserted betrayals among long time corporate friends, a Gulf Stream V, real estate in Florida, security forces and private investigators - how can this continue?! And yet it does, without sleep for the reader. Sonny would even make sure he was not exposed to any kind of inappropriate conduct, or even the perception of it. Oh, and then there was the visit with Roy Rogers himself! Imagine. What a childhood dream for those of us that might remember Roy, Dale, Trigger, and the rest of the crew singing "Happy Trails." Another thread unravels, and Sonny, as would we, feels the presence of evil all around.
Two things Sonny learns. When you're completely down and hopeless, friends - true friends, will never judge and leave you, rather encourage and stand beside you. Second, keep talking with God. A true story as a must read, even though it really does seem like something from The Twilight Zone.

Indispensable for the 78-rpm Collector!Review Date: 2000-08-09
Charts and graphs included provide, as accurately as currently possible, chronological placement of various records according to size, price class, and label type. The book places a large emphasis on the Red Seal (celebrity classical) label type, but the popular categories are not overlooked. The text is clear, concise, and quite readable, especially when one considers the huge amount of numerical information presented.
A most interesting feature is a central section featuring Victor's most "important" classical artists of the period, taking the opportunity to use tenor Enrico Caruso (arguably Victor's greatest-ever recording artist) as an example to show every label variety presented. Since his recordings have been readily available in virtually every recording format since 1902, this is a most appropriate example. A useful annotated bibliography concludes the book.
In conclusion, no serious collector of 78-rpm records should be without this book. It has already reached somewhat of a cult status and deserves it, and your purchase of this book will ensure that Sherman, Moran, and Nauck continue the excellent research they have done in the field of vintage recordings. If you don't buy it here, buy it somewhere!

"This is a sensitive, thoughtful collection from a woman who learned long ago that 'to retain freshness of experience' one must be 'willing to face the strangeness and horror of it.'" --Publishers Weekly
