New approaches to Marine Electronics for the boatyard
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.

I just got ABYC instructor Ed Sherman's new book on Advanced Marine Electronics "Advanced Marine Electrics and Electronics Troubleshooting", it's a Marine Electricians guide to new techniques (Like TDR), new tools and methods for the Marine Electrician. It's an adjunct to the powerboaters guide.

BTW: TDR Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) is based in conductor reflection timing (on a return pulse) which used in testing wiring and optical fiber.

Minor Wants: More. I'd have liked a deeper Oscilloscope section and more engine electronics (J1939) stuff and NMEA2000. Pictures are profuse and clear. I started reading the ASE Advanced Performance series in conjunction with this book and would have liked more of the engine electronics integration knowledge brought here. (Picoscope type stuff). Would also like selection criteria for quality electronics (e.g. explain NITS or candela and contrast levels for visibility, a better explanation on pulse width modulation and motor control where the terms are used in the text. Explaining the NMEA 2000 technical architecture deeper would be nice. The author states that it is an additional book for the ABYC electrician and electronics installer, but some basics on electronics would help. 200 pages is too short, but it's a great book.

BTW: Pulse Width modulation (PWM) is a means of controlling a (DC) motor's speed by providing longer or shorter pulses (from a onboard systems microprocessor). More "On" time means faster speed. (Think flicking a fan switch on and off.)

This book is a must get, yet I am only left wanting more. A 2nd edition would be have to get. I loved the ground loop explanation and the need for isolation on network systems on boats.

One of the best parts is the stuff the electronics tech can build.

BTW: When electronics have more than one point of grounding, EMI (electronic noise is propagated through the system. Problems can occur with networks like cheap ethernet (which is why opto isolation is recommended) on boats where ground loop noise is severe. A ground loop is a bad thing, in your network and in your home stereo (causes a hum).

Like any book under a million pages on the subject, there is a lot more you want. His advice focuses on hand held Microprocessor test tools. This is excellent guidance for average marine electronics tech, although I am not likely to give up my old Tek 11801C TDR or my SD-24 sampling head for the stuff I do.

The old technique, new technique section locked in the 5 star rating for me.

The last ice age that took place some twelve thousand years ago helped to create and shape Wisconsin's topography and create the varied landscape that is Wisconsin today. Wisconsin's 'Ice Age national Scenic Trail' is a one thousand mile footpath that traverses across the entire state and a popular outdoor attraction for legions of tourists and residents every year. Along these natural course are to be seen hundreds of beautiful lakes, expansive prairies, fertile farm lands, essential wetlands, Native American effigy mounts, the remains of oak savannas, and a cultural wealth of villages, towns, and cities. Magnificently showcasing the effects of continental glaciation (in some places the flow of glacial ice was as much as two miles deep) created a variety of geologic features including kames, kettles, drumlins, ice-walled-lake plans, eskers, tunnel channels, basalt bluffs, dells, and rock-strewn terminal moraines. Of special note is the ancient landscape of the Driftless Area which is devoid of glacial evidence. "Along Wisconsin's Ice Age Trail" is superbly illustrated study of this ancient causeway and is enhanced with informed and informative essays by Mike Dombeck (former chief of the U.S. Forest Service and a biologist on the campus of the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point); Robert Freckmann (botanist at the UW-Stevens Point); Paul G. Hayes (retired journalist for the 'Milwaukee Journal'; Randy Hoffman (conservation biologist, Wisconsin Department of natural Resources), Ellen Kort (former poet laureate of Wisconsin); David Mickelson (Emeritus Professor, Department of Geology and Geophysics, UW-Madison) and Sarah Mittlefehldt (environmental historian, UW-Madison). "Along Wisconsin's Ice Age Trail" should be a part of every Wisconsin school and community collection, and is enthusiastically recommended for anyone who has every walked any portion of this fantastic ice age trail -- or who would like to!

This is an excellent book with many essays and information regarding the Deaf Culture. Not only is there a lot of information and research, but there are several hilarious chapters by Ben Bahan that made me chuckle out loud (and THAT's a high compliment)! Being Deaf myself, it was refreshing and fun to look into this book and pull from it many wonderful nuggests of information. Highly recommended! :o)

The Analysis of Revelation

Review Date: 2006-01-27
Here, for the reader seeking an interpretation of The Revelation of Saint John, is a detailed interpretation of that most significant book of the New Testament. The analysis, as Alva W. Sherman explains in his preface, represents the product of years of study and of a belief in the promise made by Jesus before He went to heaven and as recorded in John 15:26- "But when the comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father... he shall testify of Me."

The book is organized in such a fashion as to allow the author to present his commentary immediately after the scriptural passage under discussion. Each chapter is devoted to a like-numbered chapter of Revelation. And within each chapter the pattern is the same: several verses of scripture are given, and these are followed by the author's remarks upon the meaning; then a few more verses are given, again followed by commentary, until all the verses in the chapter have been covered.

Drawing directly from the Biblical text and from his knowledge of history, both religious and secular, Mr. Sherman offers his views on how prophecy has been, or is yet to be fufilled. These views may frequently differ from those of other interpreters of Revelation, but they lead ultimately to an abiding truth: all those who would enter the City of God must be willing to pay as great a price as Jesus paid at Calvary to make it possible for men to enter.

Hre is an instructive, soundly scriptural book that throws a brilliant light upon this climatic Word of God. It shows clearly God's plans for the final days, and warns unbelievers of the imminent judgment that is so clearly foretold. Chapter after chapter of The Analysis of Revelation illuminates the tremendous events of our day, so that all who have eyes may now see, all who have ears may now hear, the sure foretelling of the Lord, speaking through that devout early Christian to whom the heavenswere opened and the Lamb appeared on His great throne. For Americans who have for so long been astonished and mystified by the cryptic messages borne in every line of Revelation, this book will serve as as invaluable key. -- from book's dustjacket

This volume is part of the Practical Guides Series developed and published by ISA (formerly "The Instrument Society of America", later "The International Society for Measurement and Control" and now known as "The Instrument, Systems and Automation Society"). The Practical Guides were concived to bridge the gap between theory and actual practice, and the stress is placed on the actual experience of measurement and control practitioners.

This is a relatively short book, but the content gives you a glimpse that you rarely get: photographers talking about specific images and the way they work. There are plenty of "interview" books with excellent lens-based artists, and I have many if not most of them. This one gives you specific commentary. The pictures are nice too. Many of them are not that common, at least to me.

The multitalented Jory Sherman has written a gentle story about a couple torn apart by the years, only to be brought together by tragedy. Here is the work of a keen observer who knows how old men and old women love and hate, and whose grasp of human frailty manifests itself in this bittersweet love story.

What a joy is was to open Architecture and Interior Design from the 19th Century; An Integrated History, Volume 2. Once I looked at the Table of Contents, I knew I was in for serious studies of Design History, from the Industrial Revolution to the Present.
(Volume 1 covers the same material from the earliest cultural precedents to the 18th Century)

What I was not prepared for was the depth of information contained on each page. This is a truly important work and a "must have" for serious professional libraries.

Professors Buie Harwood, Bridget May and Curt Sherman have undertaken an enormous challenge and have outdone themselves, again.

Each Chapter offers a comprehensive review of the subject period, beginning with the Historic and Social climate of the times. Concepts are thoroughly outlined and the Design Characteristics explained and illustrated. Architecture is examined and highlighted with both Public and Private Buildings shown and noted with numerous details. Interiors, Furnishings and Decorative Arts are also examined with the kind of depth and insight that makes me want to visit or re-visit every site and museum listed.

Numerous important quotes are part of each chapter and offer glimpses of the impact of each design period in daily life. There are plenty of fine photographs, and many, many detailed illustrations. The Graphics and use of color are beautiful.

There are also wonderful examples and discussions of art, architecture, interior and exterior elements as well as comparative analysis with current designs. Each section also includes a listing of important Design Practitioners, Treatise, Buildings and Interiors as well as a Design Spotlight that highlights the key elements of each design period. References and Cross-references abound.

Timelines are also included for design periods as well as an interesting chronology of the evolution of the professions of Architecture and Interior Design.

At around a thousand pages (and a bonus CD), the depth of this volume is fabulous. Concurrent design styles are addressed fully with rich examples of signature elements and motifs covering a full page, in many cases. For example there are (12) twelve full pages on De Stijl alone and (22) Twenty-Two pages on the Chicago School with (77) seventy-seven photographs and numerous illustrations and plates. Environmental Modern is distilled to (36) thirty-six pages of wonderful photographs and rich descriptive text.
