This book is definitely the most comprehensive guidebook to the Minneapolis/St. Paul area, containing over 800 listings of local parks, attractions, accommodations and restaurants (both with price scales included). The kids'section is especially great, with much attention focused on how to get the most bang for your buck when taking the family out to play or dine. Also interesting are the interviews with local personalities featured in the book, including a television horror show host, the former mayor of St. Paul, the owner of Minnesota's Baseball Museum, and the director of St. Paul's Como Zoo.

As a longtime resident of the Twin Cities, I appreciate guidebooks such as these that take into consideration things that I personally have considered local "secret" treasures, such as the beautiful Swedish Museum, Minneapolis' Stone Arch Bridge and the adjacent parklands, the fossil beds in St. Paul's Lilydale Park, and just a ton of other things that there just isn't room to mention. The book makes for a fun read, too, with a great chapter on the history of the Twin Cities and information on the geological makeup of the region in general.

Absolutely the Best Twin Cities Guide

Last summer, I traveled to the Twin Cities to see my Twins play at the Metrodome for the first time (having only caught road games in the past). Taking a three day weekend from work, I wanted to take advatntage of being in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area for more than just a couple of baseball games, and boy did this guide help!

I browsed over a couple of guides in the local bookstore before settling on the Insider's Guide. The information inside was as up to date as could be expected, and using it and a few web sites, I was able to work in two baseball games, the obligatory trip to the Mall of America, a Twins autograph session, trips to the Science Museum of Minnesota (to see the Questionable Medical Devices exhibit), a trip down the part of town featured in the Mary Tyler Moore show, and a quick tour of the Wabasha Street Caves, formerly the hideout of gangsters and the scene of a shootout featured on a History Channel program--all in less than 72 hours!

I even located restaurants near the attractions I wanted to see that served the kinds of food I was interested in--Japanese and Italian at the time--without any difficulty.

Take it from the Insiders when you make your trip to these wonderful cities in the upper Midwest. Minnesota is a hidden treasure that few in the US make it their goal to see--I went for baseball, and came back quite impressed, largely thanks to the Insider's Guide's information.

What I find most fascinating is how we can change during the course of our lives. The section "Personal Growth as Individuation" particulary intrigued me, especially the following: "[Individuation is a developmental process] that requires you to start dealing with your less-preferred functions (or what you might call your less conscious side) by midlife...in order to become more integrated and whole...As you go through life you find it is more functional to be able to use all aspects of the self to maximize your ability to handle a variety of situations and people." As we nudge our less-preferred functions out of the shadows and into the light, we may discover that we have blossomed into fuller selves.

An absolute must have for any and all couples!

My wife and I recently ventured into marriage counseling after a separation. Our counselor gave us this book to borrow after about the fourth session and after we had completed a myers briggs test. It has been by far the best resource we've seen. Lightbulbs are going off with every turn of the page. You have to read this book.

Finest Historical Israeli Tank Book Ever Published.

Review Date: 2007-12-22
The "Israeli Sherman", by Thomas Gannon, is a can't miss book for students and historians of armored warefare. With the exception of R.P. Hunnicutt's classic "Sherman A History Of the American medium Tank", this book rates as as possibly one of the best pictorial histories ever published about the Sherman tank. After dedicated service in WW-2, the Sherman tank continued in active military service for over 30 plus years. The chief beneficiary of this remarkable tank was the state of Israel. The Sherman tank was Israels main battle tank in it's war of independence in 1948. The Sherman continued to serve in all different variations up until 1974 for the IDF. The IDF mounted a 105mm main gun on the Sherman during the six day war in 1966. It became known as the M50 super Sherman. During the six day war the Modified Sherman tanks of the israeli defense forces, held their own against Arab made Russian tanks scoring victory after victory. The real test for the aging legendary tank came during the 1973 Yom Kippur war. As israel was fighting for it's survival after a dual front assault by Egypt and Syria, the Israeli's were mobilizing every available military weapon and vehicle. The IDF needed more tank support for their main battle battle tank the centurion. They need not look any father than their IDF warehouses. Over 350 thirty year old Sherman Tanks were called to duty once more in the sinai and the Golan Heights. They proved once again to be a formidable tank, as they destroyed much newer Russian T-54/55 Arab tanks. The IDF tank commanders performed the impossible with vintage WW-2 Sherman tanks, which helped send Egypt and Syria to defeat. Never in history has a tank performed so well for so long in multiple variations. It's dependability is undeniable and its place in military history secured not just for America, but many nations around the world. This lavishly illustrated 235 page book which is printed on high quality glossy paper, tells the story of a tank that helped save a nation, after it helped save the world during a prior life in WW-2. The Sherman tank as documented in this book, continued to serve in the Chile armed forces until 2002. That is some sixty years after the M4 sherman made its debut in WW-2. Although out of print, this book is worth searching out on Amazons used dealer network or try [...], who has the book in stock. I give this book my highest recommendation.

Tis is an extermely detailed and accurate book about the israeli Sherman tank. The author shows a first class familiarity with the Sherman in general, and with the Israeli Sherman in particular. He draws on many relyable sources, and many of his detailed illustrations come firsthand from Israeli sources and from Israeli museums (mainly the tank museum in Latroun). No technical detail is too trivial, no nut and bolt too small to mention. Nor is the Historical aspect neglected! Try as I might, and being myself quite familiar with the subject, I could find no inaccuracies in this outstanding book.

Every John Waters fan must own this! I feel like I'm peeping through the windows of his house spying on him. How cool is that? Fake plastic food, kitschy collectibles, and a library that puts mine to shame. Highly recommended from a huge Waters fan!

I am so pleased with this item!!! I am an avid fan of Mr John Waters, and all of his works. My collection would not be complete, without this magazine.

It is soooo righteous! All of these photos of HIS HOME, his crazy crazy collection of weird vintage stuff. His porn, his literature, his knicknacks (his house is full of glass food!). It's just fabulous. Get it now.

If you DON'T know who John Waters is... but you like interesting voyeuristic ventures into a complete strangers interesting, flamboyant, original, awesome private home... then you too will dig this excellent bit of media. ;>

Poetry that is full of surprises

The first astonishing thing about this book is the title page in Braille. Unexpected and very effective --- the reader crosses into the tactile and stunningly sensuous world of the poet. Throw out your tired old sterotypes about disability and blindness because this powerful poet is completely in control of her art. You'll notice it in her startling language---full of tastes and smells and little sensory shivers--- and the way the body is utterly present in each poem. And did I mention erotic? All that exercise of the other senses (however many of them we've got) has led to arrestingly erotic poems.

Get this book. Read it aloud to a friend if you're that brave. You won't be the same.

Excellent, vivid, poetry.

At the recent Sacred Dance Guild Lakeshore Chapter conference, Dancing the Light, I attended Deena's workshop based on Chapter 5 of her book, "Getting Started." It was excellent and so is the book. Deena shares her eighteen years of dancing in churches with us so that we might benefit from her experience. I particularly liked the idea of a mission statement for a liturgical dance group.
The book is a wonderful combination of personal testimony, historical and scriptural context, and practical tips and choreography. Especially noteworthy is the brief history of liturgical dance summed up in two columns spanning the centuries: one for those who "favor dance" and one for those who "oppose dance." This is a continuing debate . . .
If you're interested in starting a liturgical dance group or need tips for your current group, you'll find this book, written from Deena's perspective as a seminary-trained Lutheran and a ballet-trained dancer, a useful and inspiring read.

This work itself dances beyond the expected. The book is a heartfelt tribute to the power of dance in our sacred lives. It is not only a practical guide for the physical expression of spirituality within many traditions - conventional and new age - but is also a rich offering of historical perspective to further our appreciation and understanding of sacred dance.

Murals Made in the Land of Enchantment

"I gather the clay for my work, one mural at a time." ~Prinscilla Hoback

While traveling across America as a teenager, I remember borrowing money from my brother in order to buy a set of clay dishes in New Mexico. I was fascinated by the colorful glazes and simplicity of the design. Prinscilla takes clay to new levels of creativity. I love her "Earth Dancers, 1998 Mural" that shows horses dancing like spirit horses across clay backgrounds. She finds horses visually exciting and loves the image of horses silhouetted against the sky.

Prinscilla Hoback started to make bowl forms, pitchers and plates and platters. She fell in love with clay and while working at her mother's restaurant, The Pink Adobe, she learned to make pots. Soon, she was selling sugar bowls, cream pitchers and coffee mugs. As she states, it was a "earn as you learn" situation.

Now she spends her time quarrying her own clay, developing glazes and building high-fire kilns. Her murals depict herds of horses, antelope, buffalo, white deer and migratory wild birds. Her work is a passionate expression of all she loves. Her new passion is writing and she loves gardening and cooking.

What I mostly remember about New Mexico is how warm the earth felt on my feet and then there are those hail storms! It seemed very much like Africa to me. There are people who love the scent of the earth where they live and I recognize this love of the earth in Prinscilla. I was amused at how she mixed dirt from her driveway with commercially prepared clay and then started to use native clays.

This is truly a fascinating book with creative writing and pictures of the artist's life and loves. There are pictures of her home in Galisteo and she takes the reader on a small tour of the Galisteo basin. If you love pottery, the creative story of the kiln will fascinate you and you might be amused by Prinscilla's humor.

The cover is quite beautiful with a burnt orange background of clay and horses dancing playfully on a mural.

Singular Beauty

In the November 2000 issue of The Bloomsbury Review, in the "Gifts for Booklovers" section Lori D. Kranz wrote:

Her medium is clay, her inspiration the Galisteo Basin where she lives and works. Native New Mexican Priscilla Hoback makes what she calls "clay murals" or fired clay paintings. Hoback started out as a self -taught potter in Santa Fe, where she was born, and for many years created and sold functional pieces for the kitchen in her studio/shop on Canyon Road and at local craft fairs. In 1977, with her children gone to college, she yearned for a change, for a more peaceful life in the country, and so she bought a small, run-down ranch near Galisteo village, which she turned into a studio, a house, a garden, and a home for her horses, dogs, ducks, and chickens. In her meanderings through the basin valley, she became fascinated with its geology, wildlife, ancient petroglyphs, and abandoned mines-particularly clay mines. Her work grew in both size and inventiveness as she began to incorporate these influences, gathering raw materials from the land, experimenting with her own recipes, and firing them in a large kiln of her own making.

For her murals, Hoback uses the wet clay as her canvas, drawing images on it with her fingers, a pen, or a trowel. Then she brushes on pigments and creates texture by scraping away or building up layers of clay. Her imagery is of animals :horses, buffalo, deer, antelope, birds, and her favorite, bears. Before it has dried, she cuts the clay slab into smaller pieces and punches holes in them, which allows them to be screw-mounted on plywood for later hanging. Then comes what she considers the best part: the firing. Hoback sees kilns as "combinations of dragon, slave, and ancient god." The result of her efforts is a unique blend of ceramic art, painting, and installation art.

Living Clay is Hoback's story : her life, her process, her creations, her beautiful desert surroundings, all illustrated in full color. From an accomplisher potter she has become a singuar artist. "Hands ask, clay responds." she says. Her book is a testament to the beauty of what hands are capable of.

This book is a gem from the first page to the last, blending the past with the present in an unforgettable way. The use of quotes from Civil War diaries of soldiers on the March to the Sea and the contemporary stories from the people of Georgia make for a great heart-warming adventure. The author's own love story suggest the movie Cold Mountain. His first book, Walking the Trail, One Man's Journey Along the Cherokee Trail of Tears, nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, is an even better read. He does what most of us can only dream about: hitting the road with a backpack and sleeping in a tent whenever the road spirit moves him. If you need a break from the daily world and a journey into the soul, laughter included, read this author's books.

This is a wondrous book filled with detailed Civil War history and the author's personal encounters with fascinating people as he walks across Georgia, following in the footsteps of Sherman. I felt like I was right there with the "bummers" who plundered Southern homes and burned them to the ground. At times terribly sad, this book is also enriched with heart-lifting humor. Highly recommended.

Having spent some time on a farm outside Muncie, Indiana myself, I was drawn into his stories immediately. I could taste that same well water in the rusted cup; I could see that old cottonwood tree and John would have eaten my mother's pie crusts! His life experiences on the farm are both funny and heart wrenching.....at times I didn't know whether to laugh or cry or both. The feelings of not ever measuring up to the people who lived in the town were the most poignant for me.....that he felt that made me sad because I never felt that way. John's poems are a true slice of life for those of us who grew up in the rural midwest.....something I'll treasure and pass along to my children.
